As I enter my fourth year as President of Fork Union Military Academy, I realize there is no place like this in the world. Young men throughout the world are struggling these days, and the only way out of this malaise is to maintain high expectations and even higher standards. We must provide the support necessary for boys to learn how to be successful in today’s world.

Some believe the answer is teaching them how to operate modern technology. My three-year-old grandson can navigate today’s electronic gadgets with ease. Some say it is critical thinking, creativity, and cultural competency. While I don’t disagree, learning these skills is not enough.

Fork Union Military Academy provides old-fashioned Christian values like respect, integrity, faith, character, and discipline. We require all cadets to be physically fit, and the academic offerings are challenging. “Body, Mind, Spirit” is more than a motto; it is a lifestyle. It defines us every day.

Today’s challenge is that too many young men are looking for the easy path to success, when there is none. At Fork Union, success must be earned, and it requires personal sacrifice and effort. It requires courage and tenacity. Success here lasts a lifetime.

Your generosity allows us to continue educating, developing, and inspiring young men in this college preparatory, Christian, military environment. Cadets build character and learn leadership, independence, confidence, and responsibility in a setting that encourages them to be their very best.

With your support we will continue to attract the very best to work and study here. We remain debt free, and the campus looks as good as ever, but there is much work to be done. We need to maintain the “margin of excellence” that distinguishes us from other schools. Soon we will publish a Campus Master Plan that illustrates our bright future.

Guy Beatty, who passed away last October and was a long-serving member of our Board of Trustees said, “You cannot know the enjoyment of having money until you learn to give it away.” We want you to find enjoyment by investing in the future of each young man here at Fork Union.

Go FUMA!

A MessAge froM the President

In the winter of 2011, Fork Union trustee David Barrett approached the school about beginning a program to bring Christian leaders to campus. The program would be known as the Christian Leadership Series (CLS). Mr. Barrett’s reasoning was two-fold: first, the speakers would speak to the cadets in chapel, sharing their Christian faith with our community, and second, these leaders would learn more about our school and, hopefully, help to promote the Academy via word-of-mouth. Mr. Barrett met with then-president LTG John E. Jackson and Chaplain Benson, and plans were made to bring our first speakers to campus.

When RADM Burhoe assumed the presidency at Fork Union, the decision was made to continue the CLS program and expand it to include a small lunch at Careby Hall hosted by the Burhoes, to include the CLS speaker, Mr. Barrett, Chaplain Benson, and selected cadet leaders. The speakers are toured around campus by a Fork Union cadet, visiting Jacobson Hall, the Estes Athletic Center, the Beatty Library, the Alumni House and Museum, and various classroom spaces, among other stops on campus. The speakers address both chapel services in the Upper and Middle Schools and have the opportunity for a Q&A session with cadet leaders in both corps.

Our first CLS speaker, Brigade General (Ret.) Patrick Finnegan, visited campus on April 21, 2011. BG Finnegan was the president

of Longwood University and also taught for 11 years at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. As of the end of the 2013-14 school year, we have welcomed nine other speakers in the CLS program. These speakers have represented a wide variety of professions, cultures, and Christian walks. One speaker, RADM (ret.) Frank Rennie, would later join the Fork Union Military Academy Board of Trustees.

We are thankful to Mr. Barrett for helping to organize this event and to RADM Burhoe for his continued support of the program. The CLS program serves to bring wonderful guest speakers to campus and to help promote Fork Union. The young men on campus enjoy the speakers and, in return, our speakers learn about the Academy’s mission and values.

introducing our new

AssociAte director of AluMni relAtions

To say that Fork Union runs deeply in my blood is most likely an understatement. My grandfather, Stewart Percy, attended the Academy and graduated as a post-graduate in 1959. My father, Chad Percy, who now serves on the Academy’s Alumni Board, also attended as a post-graduate and graduated in 1983. As I endured my first two years of high school in Statesville, NC, my family and I had come to the understanding that a better opportunity was necessary to set up my future. That’s where Fork Union came into the picture for me, and it’s been an integral part of my life ever since.

When I arrived at Fork Union Military Academy as a cadet in January 2005, I knew I was preparing to embark on an opportunity unlike

any in my life to that point. I came to the Academy for my junior and senior year of high school and experienced success spiritually, academically, and athletically like I never had before. That success carried into college at Wingate University in Wingate, NC, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management in 2010.

I arrived back at Fork Union only three months following my college graduation as an intern in the Athletic Department, and from there, went on to work in the Admissions Office for over two years.

As I prepare to begin my tenure as Associate Director of Alumni Relations for the Academy, I find myself in a similar emotional state as when I first arrived on campus in 2005. I’m extremely excited for the opportunity to work with our alumni base in efforts to give future cadets the same opportunity we were all once lucky enough to have ourselves. I’m also humbled to be afforded the chance to lead an effort I believe so deeply in. I have an acute nostalgia for my time here as a cadet, and I’ll always firmly believe what this special place stands for.

Fork Union strives to develop young men in body, mind, and spirit, while instilling in them core values of respect, integrity, faith, character, and discipline. I wholeheartedly believe I developed in every single one of the aforementioned areas while attending the Academy. Future generations of young men deserve the same opportunity.

All of you will have various niches of the Academy that meant something special, but the unique overall experience that Fork Union delivers is the bigger picture, and it’s an experience that cannot be replicated elsewhere. With the help of the men that have walked these grounds in years past, we can continue to develop Fork Union Military Academy, carry on with the profound traditions, and pass on the experience for generations to come.

With sincere gratitude for what all of you have contributed already, I say thank you, and look forward to working with you in the near future.

Respectfully,

Spencer Percy ‘06

Google the term “leadership” and you will discover thousands of leadership styles and the significance of personality traits. You can find business and educational leadership models as well as numerous outdoor leadership challenges such as Ropes, Wilderness Camps, and Discovery Schools.

Add “character” and “adolescent male” to your search and there’s not much out there. Very little has been done to integrate moral values and behavior into a practical leadership model that understands the adolescent male (body, mind, and spirit). For an institution whose mission is to educate, develop, and inspire young men in a college preparatory, Christian, military environment, this is a challenge.

Fork Union Military Academy is working to crack this code. We believe we are different from other all-male preparatory institutions in three basic, fundamental ways. First, we acknowledge that leadership and the core values of respect, integrity, faith, character and discipline are not self-referencing, (relative), but are based on unwavering absolutes. Leadership, by definition, is a moral proposition resulting in good. The question “Do objective moral values exist?” is answered each morning as cadets struggle to treat others as they expect to be treated. At Fork Union, these core behaviors have been defined, encouraged, and are continually assessed.

Secondly, we affirm that leadership is learned. Vince Lombardi said, “Leaders are made, not born.” Here at the Academy, we focus continuously on character and leadership by maintaining the “character leadership” dialogue throughout the day… from morning devotionals to the athletic fields. Through leadership projects and one-on-one mentoring, we “immerse cadets in a sea of professionalism.” We understand we must model the behaviors we wish to instill in others. As one author put it, “You cannot impart what you do not possess.”

Finally, Fork Union sets itself apart by recognizing that the adolescent male is a truly unique entity. We understand,

therefore, that instruction, correction, and discipline must accurately correspond to this fact. Both discipline and etiquette, for example, are primarily issues of directing strength. Rigorous research in the last ten years has confirmed what experience has told us for years… that young men differ emotionally, cognitively, and physically from young women. In girls, the area of the brain most related to integrating information from the senses is two years ahead of boys. Girls are more likely to hang out with adults and share adult values, while boys are less inclined to be sympathetic to grownups. Tragically, today many boys who go to college will quit, but girls won’t.

Our Plan of ActionThe Academy’s early work in this area will be centered around three action items. First, as the Director of Character and Leadership, I will work directly and regularly with the Battalion Staff and Platoon officers and NCOs to ensure they understand the importance of

positive behavior, role modeling, and that they continue developing the skills to lead.

The second action item is a “wilderness-based” development program for those who struggle with making the

initial adjustment to Fork Union. The “second chance” remediation will ensure we’ve done everything possible to protect the investment we’ve made in the young man, and that the parents have made in the school.

The third action item is the development of a Fork Union Military Academy Character and Leadership Handbook that describes how we do what we do to build young men of character who can lead.

We believe our leadership model best reflects research in the area of adolescent male development and is demonstrably true in that it is biblically based. The Academy is currently writing the book on character leadership for the modern adolescent male. It is an exciting and fulfilling prospect to know that each new chapter written is another young man transitioning from childhood to a man of character, prepared and challenged to make a difference in this world.

LeadershipDevelopment Program

&by Col Houston EldridgeDirector of Character and Leadership

The mission of Fork Union Military Academy emphasizes the importance of enabling cadets to “build character, and learn leadership,

independence, confidence, responsibility, and discipline in a setting that encourages mental, physical, and spiritual growth.” As the student body at Fork Union Military Academy has become more diverse in recent years, the Academy has recognized the benefit of providing special measures to ensure all of its cadets have equal opportunities to grow in these vital areas.

During the spring of 2014, a special committee of Upper School faculty and administrators was formed to discuss how to implement the Academy’s vision by providing additional support for its new international students. By upholding the core values of respect, faith, character, integrity, and discipline that make the Academy strong, the committee worked to discuss practical ways to establish a diverse yet unified student community. The committee determined two key tools for working with Fork Union’s international population: the creation of an orientation program to assist the new international students upon their initial arrival and the establishment of a student mentorship program to provide ongoing support for the new students throughout the school year.

In March of 2014, the mentorship committee announced a new leadership opportunity for Upper School cadets: serving as a mentor for a new international student. The student response was overwhelming as eager students stepped forward to offer their assistance in advance for the upcoming school year. Dozens of Upper School students of different ages, interests, and ethnic backgrounds applied; they submitted detailed applications, including essays and references, and participated in individual interviews with the mentorship committee. In late spring, the first group of mentors was announced, and students of American, Chinese, Korean, and Russian descent were invited to return to school early to participate in the orientation program for the new international students—the first prong of the two-pronged plan.

The orientation program was designed as an intensive, short-term support measure to assist new international students with their initial transition to life at Fork Union Military Academy. One of the keys to the success of the orientation was the inclusion of the student mentors who served as peers and leaders for each of the new international students. The orientation took place from August 25-27 of this year as the Academy welcomed 17 new international students to the Upper School. Waiting eagerly to help ensure their success were their student mentors. Those cadets were awarded a green mentorship cord and the chance to serve—no rank was awarded other than to the overseeing mentor, Cadet Samuel Johnson, known as the “Diversity Officer”.

Although the program is in its early stages, it shows great promise of assisting new students in acclimating to Academy life by establishing good habits, developing confidence, and through forming cross-cultural friendships and connections.

a Few good Men

Each year the senior class at Fork Union Military Academy achieves 100% college acceptance, and the diversity of the Corps is often reflected in the diversity of these acceptances. Beginning with the Class of 2008, select members of each graduating class have been included on a poster called “A Few Good Men,” which highlights the diversity of acceptances our seniors receive.

Seven editions of the Few Good Men poster now adorn the main lobby of Hatcher Hall, including the most recent one from the Class of 2014. These posters tell the success stories for each of the smiling boys selected for inclusion, and provide visitors with a glimpse of the array of admittances our seniors achieve each year. The most recent iteration includes cadets who were admitted to colleges from Florida to Washington, state schools and private colleges, service academies to technical schools. Behind each smiling face in the picture is a success story that we are always glad to tell.

Bill MartinGoing Outside the Box with

Bill Martin plunges his hand into the large, round, chest-high tank, the water roiling with shiny white fish. He pulls out a large

dinner-plate-sized tilapia, one of his brood stock that helps him produce up to 20,000 pounds of live fish every day for distributors along the east coast from Washington, DC to New York, NY.Martin (FUMA Class of 1967) is the owner of Blue Ridge Aquaculture, the world’s largest sustainable indoor fishery, using an environmentally-friendly recirculating aquaculture system.Southwest Virginia may seem to be a strange place to find the world’s largest indoor producer of tilapia, a fish native to Egypt’s Nile River. In fact, most of the world’s fish farms are found in Asia where the fish are raised outside in rice paddies and densely stocked pens. These crowded conditions spread pollutants and disease into the environment, as farmers use a variety of antibiotics and pesticides banned in the United States to keep their fish alive. But Bill Martin, a Martinsville native, has never been one to do things exactly the way others

think they should be done. In the early 1990s, when he saw how catfish were being raised in outdoor ponds and pens in Kentucky, he knew there must be a better way. And he set out to figure it out. He went on to pioneer brand new techniques, processes, and systems that have revolutionized the way fish farms can be operated. This independent spirit and constant drive to “think outside the box” should come as no surprise to classmates and teachers who knew him at Fork Union Military Academy.“I’d gotten thrown out of five schools before I got to Fork Union,” Martin says with a chuckle. “I obviously had an ‘authority issue,’” he says, smiling. But COL “Red” Pulliam and other faculty at Fork Union refused to let Martin fail. The core values of the Academy—Respect, Integrity, Faith, Character, Discipline—began to work on Bill Martin. “In my particular case, the discipline came in and then the respect, all of those things followed in line,” Martin says. “It wasn’t about waxing the floor. That dawned on me much later in life,” Martin says with a laugh. “It’s amazing, you’ll be sitting around and all of a sudden you’ll realize ‘gosh, that’s why they did that to me!’ It didn’t have anything to do with the waxing of the floor. It was about learning discipline.” “I learned about authority, and how to be authority, and how to treat people,” Martin explains. “I’ve got fifty families back here that depend on every decision I make. That weighs on you. If you are after the money and that’s all, then those fifty families don’t weigh on you much. I use the lessons of Fork Union every day. Every day.”“I never met such dedicated guys as the faculty at Fork Union. And many of them are still there. Their children are there. This is amazing to me that this legacy has gone on, and it’s gone on because it’s a good thing, a really, really good thing. This is a dedication that’s really something. You don’t see that in other places. You don’t see it in public schools. You don’t see that even in universities, you don’t feel the roots there. Fork Union has some serious roots. I hope it lasts forever.”

Bill Martin, a member of FUMA’s Class of 1967, examines one of his tilapia, grown in the world’s largest sustainable indoor fishery using a recirculating aquaculture system.

Greetings alumni, parents, grandparents, and special friends:

For the past three years, your Trustees and Admiral Burhoe have been working extremely hard developing detailed Strategic and Master Plans needed to move the Academy toward a bright and financially secure future. Collectively, these two important documents will chart the course for the Academy, allowing it to secure its place as America’s premier Christian military academy for boys.

Among the goals set forth in the Strategic Plan are objectives to expand our ability to connect, communicate, and network with our

alumni and parents on a higher level than in the past. To help us expand our interactions with our alumni, Spencer Percy, ‘06 will lead our Alumni Relations program. Spencer will work with each of the alumni classes to create a bona fide Class Agents program structured to help grow and maintain our alumni networks, organize regional special events for alumni, and improve the quality of the reunion experience for our alumni and their families.

Laura Luniewski has assumed the role of Associate Director of Parent Relations and is the point of contact for the Fork Union Parents Association. David and Lola Ilori, who have had sons and nephews matriculating at the Academy for most of the last decade, have volunteered to provide leadership for the revamped Parents Association. Joining David and Lola are representatives from each class, including: 12th Grade Representative-Diane Cavazos, 11th Grade Representative-Tatiana Haag, 10th Grade Representative-Katie Smith, 9th Grade Representative-Laura Elsey, and representing the Middle School and Day Student parents, Cathy Chiovaro. The Fork Union Parents Association is a resource to help us connect and communicate with parents.

We will also be looking for new opportunities to partner with foundations and companies who have an interest in seeing the Academy succeed in its educational mission. One such partnership we recently formed is with Lifetime Financial Growth, LLC (story on page 16), which helps the Academy with scholarship support and extends our ability to provide more planned giving options to our alumni and friends.

We believe these changes in how the Fork Union Development program interrelates with our alumni, families, and special friends enriches the experience for our amazing cadets.

Please contact me if you have any questions or thoughts about any of these new or expanded programs.

Sincerely,

Tim ReddenVice President for Development

A MessAge froM the Choosing Fork UnionHow we decided, and the impact it has had on our family

From David & Lola Ilori

Our names are David and Lola Ilori, and we are this school year’s Parents Association Chairpersons. We are the proud parents of two wonderful Fork Union cadets, who both started their careers in the 6th grade at Fork

Union Middle School. Our oldest is Captain Nathaniel Ilori, a senior and the Company Commander of Alpha Company, and our youngest, Jonathan Ilori, is a freshman. Jonathan was the Executive Officer of the Middle School for the 2013-2014 school year. We also have two nephews, Michael Bamisile, class of 2012, and Daniel Bamisile, who is a senior. We are proud of the FUMA men that they are, and are still becoming.

It all started in the spring of 2008 when we began a vigorous search for a new school for our sons. At the time, they were attending a local private Christian school in South Chesterfield/Chester, Virginia, but there was

a major need for change so we started the application process for one of the well-known private schools in Richmond, Virginia. However, our son was not selected to attend the middle school there. Like any parent would do, we attempted to meet with the middle school principal just to understand what we as parents could do better to improve our son’s chances. The principle was very cold and unwelcoming as we requested a meeting with him. His exact words were, “There is really nothing to discuss! Your son didn’t get in.” We adamantly requested a meeting with him anyway. He gave us about five minutes of his time to tell us the same thing.

Through several phone calls to the school, we were able to ascertain that our son was not prepared for the upcoming school year, so we spent time and money for tutoring to catch him up over the summer. We were absolutely disappointed when we realized that the school

Page 9: 2013-2014 Annual Report

14 15

in Chester was not preparing our son for the future. The school was understaffed with only a handful of licensed teachers and had a high turnover rate. We later found out that many of the high school students were babysitting the middle school and kindergarten students for hours at a time during the school day.

Lola and I started praying that God would direct us to the right school for our sons. We knew that our sons were called to lead, so we wanted to make sure that with a good education they would learn how to be leaders. As we started praying, almost every day for about two weeks, I would hear a radio advertisement for Fork Union Military Academy. Finally, we started the research online for “boys’ military schools.” Several schools came up, and we started calling to speak to the admissions department of each school to get more information. A few weeks after receiving the admissions packet from Fork Union, we learned that there was an open house for Military Schools in Richmond. We attended the open house on a Sunday where we met COL Steve Macek, who was the Admissions Director at the time.

Our initial impressions of Steve Macek and Fork Union as compared to the other military schools were these: First, Fork Union was about the total boy with the motto, Body, Mind, and Spirit. Second, Fork Union was not really about fixing bad kids, but making good kids great. We also learned at the open house that the cadets get to come home based on the merit system, that they can earn the privilege to come home on leaves. That was huge for us because our impression of boarding school was based on our experience in Nigeria, where you dropped your kids off at the boarding school, and then you picked them up for Christmas and summer break. You can visit as often as you’d like, but your son only gets to come home for those two major breaks. The other thing that we learned was that the Academy is a Christian school started by a Baptist minister—again, that was huge for both of us in making

the decision to send Nathaniel to the Academy.Lola and I continued to pray for guidance as we scheduled an appointment to visit the school. We were impressed by the grounds and peaceful environment we drove into. We had the opportunity to meet the President of the Academy at that time, General John E. Jackson (Air Force Retired), who made us laugh and welcomed us. We took a tour of the school and had a chance to eat lunch with COL Rob Feathers, the Headmaster of the Middle School. The more we interacted with the staff, the more welcomed we felt. It certainly was a different feeling as compared to the private school in Richmond, where the atmosphere was tense and unfriendly.

We left the Academy with God’s peace in our hearts. On the drive home, we talked about the opportunity that it could afford Nathaniel. We talked through the pros and cons of sending our son to an all-boys Christian military boarding school, and this is what we came up with:

Pros: 1. The school has been around for 109 years (at that

time).2. It is a Christian school started by a Baptist minister.3. It is an all-boys school (no girl distractions).4. The staff is very friendly.5. Many of the staff has been around for decades

and attended the school themselves (low staff turnover).

6. Our son will have the opportunity to find himself with the different opportunities that will be available to him (sports, music, drama, art/crafts, leadership opportunities, study of God’s word, and a diverse student body, to name a few).

7. Structure and military training for character and leadership development.

8. The campus is clean, beautiful, peaceful, and safe.9. One Subject Plan in the Upper School10. College Preparatory curriculum

Cons:1. Our son will be away from home.2. The cost

As we continued to pray, we felt we needed to move forward with the admissions process. We scheduled a time to bring Nathaniel to Fork Union for a visit and an interview. The second tour was student led. That was important for us because we were able to ask the cadet questions about his experience in the Academy’s Middle School. He shared what he liked and didn’t like. We got to see the school through the eyes of a middle school student. On the way home, we asked our ten-year-old what he thought of Fork Union and if he would like to attend middle school there. We explained to him that it’s a boarding school, which meant he would live at the school for most of the school year but that he would get to come home on leaves. He said yes, he would like to attend Fork Union.

Within the following week, we received a letter from the Admissions Department that our ten-year-old would be joining Fork Union’s 6th grade class. We were all excited and scared at the same time (that included Nathaniel), yet we found God’s peace in that decision. We quickly started shopping for supplies and preparing him for the first day of school. Check-in day for new cadets was emotional for us. We loved the fact that the middle school cadets were paired up with an officer or upper school advisor to help through the check-in process. The parents’ orientation answered a lot of our questions and further put us at ease with the decision to send our son to Fork Union. As we took the step of faith, God helped us overcome the concern of our son being away from home and provided a way to help pay the tuition.

We had a wonderful first year experience at Fork Union, so we encouraged my sister and brother-in-law to send

my nephew, Michael. At that time, they were in the process of making a decision on a high school for him. He graduated from the Academy in 2012 as the Executive Officer of the Upper School Battalion, and is currently attending Christopher Newport University. My sister also enrolled Daniel, Michael’s younger brother, who is currently a senior and the Religion Officer of the Battalion Staff. Our younger son, Jonathan, had to wait three long years to start middle school at Fork Union, but he has since graduated middle school and is adapting well to the upper school life.

What has Fork Union done for our family? We can truly say that it has been a blessing to us. Fork Union has helped develop our boys into FUMA men. Not just men, but FUMA MEN. They have grown in body, mind, and spirit. These are kids that we towered over and now are eye-to-eye with and even look up at. They are men of respect, integrity, faith, character, and discipline. Fork Union has been a part of our team to help instill the values that we believe will make them productive members of society. They have learned how to put others first and to serve those in need. They have learned to lead by serving. They don’t take advantage of the authority they have, but use it to help make others better. They have learned to walk their own paths in faith, as Fork Union has reinforced the faith they have learned at home. We believe the Academy is preparing our sons not just to excel when they go to college, but to excel in every facet of life. What I love about Fork Union is that it doesn’t just enroll academically, athletically, or socio-economically superior boys like some schools. Fork Union believes that every boy has potential and can be developed; they play fair across the board giving everyone a level playing field. Every boy has the same opportunity here to become a FUMA MAN.

n a historic agreement signed this past summer, Fork Union Military Academy established a partnership with Richard

Bland College of William & Mary to offer dual enrollment courses for cadets. This unique agreement will enable cadets to graduate from Fork Union with both a high school diploma and an Associate of Science degree at the same time. The partnership commenced on March 1, 2014 and will be renewed annually.

The first course offered under this partnership was a three-credit Computer Modeling, Simulation, and Gaming class during Fork Union Military Academy’s 2014 Summer Session. Implementation of the full Associate’s Degree curriculum will be rolled out in Septembe 2015.

While dual enrollment courses have been offered at Fork Union for a number of years through a relationship with Piedmont Virginia Community College, this new partnership will offer cadets in the Upper School more than 60 college credits. A student could potentially graduate as a senior from Fork Union and enter William & Mary as a junior, with his Associate’s Degree already in hand. Some of the courses (32-34 credits) will be taught by Fork Union faculty, and the remaining 26-28 credits will be taught by college professors from Richard Bland in a distance learning format. The schools will use a synchronous, live format for most of these distance learning classes, with a live college professor interacting with students through technology that allows the professor to be essentially “face to face” with students in the classroom.

“We are thrilled to enter into this innovative partnership with Fork Union Military Academy,” said Richard Bland College President Debbie L. Sydow, PhD. “Richard Bland College is on a quest to further the Commonwealth’s degree attainment goals, and this partnership with FUMA represents a significant step forward.”

This new relationship will help Richard Bland College pursue the Commonwealth of Virginia’s established goal of 100,000 additional college degrees earned by Virginians by the year 2025. It will also give Fork Union cadets a tremendous head start on their college education. College credits earned by cadets will be transferable to other colleges, and Richard Bland has established formal transfer agreements with a number of Virginia colleges, such as William & Mary and Virginia Commonwealth University, guaranteeing a student’s automatic acceptance.

“Richard Bland and Fork Union share similar goals that are rooted in the growth and success of our students,” said Academy President, RADM J. Scott Burhoe. “It’s an honor to partner with a like-minded institution and be able to offer Fork Union students a unique advantage.”

Fork Union partners with

Lifetime Financial Growth, LLC

Fork Union Military Academy is pleased to announce that Pittsburg-based Lifetime Financial Growth, LLC has committed a major gift consisting of six full scholarships. The Academy will receive one scholarship in each of the next six years from Lifetime Financial Growth, which will be given to a cadet who will personify the Academy’s core values of respect, integrity, faith, character, and discipline.

According to Chad Warner, Director of Business Development for Lifetime Financial Growth, “We as a company and Fork Union Military Academy share the same values to manage and grow our businesses. We see an opportunity in this partnership to help change the lives of young men through this scholarship program who we believe will go on to be leaders in their communities and professional careers.”

There are so many young men who wish to attend the Academy, yet their families cannot cover the cost of tuition. With the support provided by Lifetime Financial Growth, six young men will receive a unique opportunity to achieve their goals. In the past several years, Fork Union has increased the amount of money given out in financial aid and

scholarship aid, and these six full paid scholarships will be an additional boost to bring the best and brightest to the Academy, regardless of their ability to pay.

RADM Burhoe, Fork Union’s tenth President, commented that “One of the reasons I chose to remain in education after retiring as a superintendent of the United States Coast Guard Academy is that I am passionate about equal access to quality education. This scholarship is an exciting step forward for our school because it allows us to select bright, fit, and faithful young men who can add value to our Corps of Cadets, regardless of their parents’ ability to pay. This scholarship will certainly change lives and in turn strengthen our country.”

Lifetime Financial Growth has also graciously allowed Fork Union to name each of the scholarships in honor of important figures in Academy history, which will honor their legacies and the Academy’s. Scholarships are a critical aspect of Fork Union Military Academy’s fundraising effort, and the help and support of Lifetime Financial Growth will provide even more opportunities for young men.

The first scholarship recipient will be announced in April 2015.

endowed sChoLarshipsOver the years, many generous supporters have contributed to create over 50 endowed scholarships. These invaluable scholarships allow us to recognize young men’s achievements at Fork Union, while also providing them with needed financial support. These special gifts are a commentary on a young man’s dedication and hard work. This year, Fork Union was able to distribute more than $80,000 to over 60 deserving cadets. Listed are each of the scholarships awarded and the names of the cadets who earned them for the 2014-2015 academic year.

The Academy would also like to recognize those individuals who provide yearly scholarship support to the Academy’s young men: Ms. Marion Moon, Dr. & Mrs. Emerson D. Farley, and Fluvanna’s Ruritan Club.

“Fork Union has a way of finding gifted and aspiring boys and helping them to get their education-those of them at least which need help. This constitutes one feature of the school in which my heart is most deeply interested”

In the last weeks of his life, his health declining, Dr. Hatcher worried whether the Academy would even continue to exist after his death. As he considered this, he said to his wife, “Well, even though it should die, it has at least given me the opportunity of helping many a poor boy get an education.”

Dr. Hatcher’s school did not die with him, though his vision of this Academy as a place that tries to “make it easier for those who have nothing and nobody to help them in starting” is becoming more of a challenge in these economic times with rising costs.

It is through our generous donors that we are able to keep Dr. Hatcher’s vision of “access” to the Academy alive and strong. Thank you for your contribution and

investment in the young men that attend Fork Union Military Academy.

“It has come to pass that Fork Union is known to be a place where bright and clever boys love to come because it is known that we try to make it easier for those who have nothing and nobody to help them in starting.”

giFts in honor or MeMory

This distinct giving level represents individuals who have generously prepared planned gifts for Fork Union Military Academy. Planned gifts take many forms, all of which will help secure the Academy’s future. We are extremely grateful to those individuals who have committed these special and critical gifts to the Academy and its future.

It is a special thing to provide a gift to the Academy in memory or in honor of someone. Many of these individuals contributed personally throughout the year, yet this level is a recognition of them by others who gave monetarily to distinguish them in this extraordinary way.

It all adds up to thank you.You provide the opportunity. They provide the passion and hard work.

Your gifts can be seen in the lives of every Fork Union cadet.

Success stories begin here.
