sChool nICkname“Bronchos” was the nickname selected for Central Oklahoma

in 1922 by Mrs. C.W. Wantland, wife of long-time UCO football coach C.W. Wantland. The name was chosen from a number of suggestions for the name of UCO’s football team and became the nickname for all athletic teams at the school.

Mrs. Wantland was made an honorary member of the Letterman’s Club as a result of selecting the nickname, becoming the first woman admitted to that organization. sChool Colors

Bronze and blue were chosen as Central Oklahoma’s school colors early in the fall of 1895 by school president Edmund Dandridge Murdaugh. The first public display of the bronze and blue was in Guthrie when a student represented UCO in the first oratorical contest ever held in Oklahoma. on The Cover

Guy hardakerIn his eighth year as Central Okla-

homa’s head coach is Guy Hardaker, who has turned the Bronchos into a perennial NCAA Division II national tournament contender.

A member of the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame, Hardaker took over the helm in 2006 after a highly-successful stint as boys high school basketball coach and is 135-72 in seven years with the Bronchos.

He’s led UCO to its first four Division II national tournament appearances -- including a pair of Sweet 16 berths -- and the Bronchos won 20-plus games a school-record four consecutive seasons from 2007-11.

Guy guided Central to two titles and three runner-up finishes in the Lone Star Conference North Division the last five years the Bronchos were in the league and he’s had 10 players earn first- or second-team all-conference honors, including two Player of the Year selections.

UCO finished a surprising 15-13 and was LSC North Division runner-up in Hardaker’s first year in 2006-07 and really took off the next season.

The Bronchos gained a share of their first-ever LSC North Division title in 2007-08 and made it to the LSC Tournament finals for the first time since 1993 while also earning their first-ever Division II national tournament berth.

UCO pulled out a thrilling overtime victory in the first round of the South Central Regional before losing to eventual champion Washburn to finish 24-8, the second-most wins in school history.

The Bronchos did even better in 2008-09, winning the outright LSC North Division crown and making it back to the LSC Tournament finals in again qualifying for the national tournament as Hardaker was named LSC North Coach of the Year.

UCO had two hard-earned wins at the South Central Regional to make the Sweet 16 for the first time ever before falling in the finals to host West Texas A&M and finish-ing a best-ever 27-6.

Hardaker and the Bronchos came back with a 22-8 campaign in 2009-10, finishing runner-up in the LSC North and making a third straight national tournament appearance before losing in the first round.

Guy got UCO back in the na-tional tournament in 2010-11 with a team that lost six players to season-ending injury using a stir-

ring post-season run to advance to the Sweet 16.The Bronchos were once again LSC North Division runners-up,

pulled off an overtime upset in making the LSC Tournament finals before losing a one-point heartbreaker there and then knocked off two higher seeds in advancing to the South Central Regional finals. UCO’s inspired run ended there to finish a 22-10 campaign.

Central competed as a Division II independent in 2012-13 and went 16-10 while playing one of the toughest schedules in school history.

The Bronchos got off to a solid start in the rugged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association last season before being plagued by a couple of key injuries and ended up finishing 9-17.

Guy started his coaching career at Edmond Memorial High School, serving as head girls golf coach and assistant boys basketball coach from 1987-93. He led the Lady Bulldogs to two state championships and one runner-up finish in golf while helping the boys basketball team to three Class 6A state tournament appearances, capped by a state title in 1993.

Hardaker moved over to Edmond Santa Fe High School in 1993 and coached the boys basketball and golf programs there until coming to UCO. He led the basketball squad to four straight regional titles and the Wolves qualified for the state tournament his last three years at the helm, capturing the Class 6A state title in 2004-05. He finished with a 173-148 record at SFHS.

Guy was a three-year basebal l s tar a t UCO from 1982-84, leading the Bronchos to a 101-49 record in that span before leaving following his junior year after getting drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies.

A two-time All-District 9 and NAIA All-Area pick, Hardaker was taken in the 10th round by the Phil-lies in 1983 and spent two years playing in the minor leagues, reaching as high as the Triple A level.

He was inducted into the UCO Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006.

Guy, who received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UCO, is mar-ried (Tammy) and has two children (Chance and Tate).

Bill shaw

In his fifth year as Central Oklahoma’s full-time assistant coach is Bill Shaw. who has helped lead the Bronchos to three NCAA Division II national tournament appearances while with the Bronchos.

Shaw has played a big role the past four years as UCO has gone 96-51. The Bronchos were a school-record 27-6 in Shaw’s first year in 2008-09 and followed with 22-8 and 22-10 seasons the next two years, qualifying for the national tournament all three years and advancing to the Sweet 16 in ‘09 and ‘11.

Bill was an assistant boys basketball coach at Santa Fe High School from 1999-07, serving all but one of those seasons as Guy Hardaker’s top aide. He helped lead the Wolves to four straight regional championships and three Class 6A state tournament appearances, with the 2004-05 team winning the state title.

Shaw also coached the boys tennis team from 2002-07, taking SFHS to the state tournament every season and placing as high as third.

A 1982 graduate of Oklahoma State, Shaw was co-owner of a restaurant in Enid until going to Santa Fe as a teacher/coach in 1997 and was in private business for one year before coming to UCO.

Bill is married (Patricia) and has two children (Andy and Hayden).

ebounding is the key word for Central Oklahoma in 2013-14 and in more ways than one.Literally, the Bronchos need to be better on the boards after getting outrebounded by nearly seven

a game last season. And figuratively, UCO is looking to bounce back from a 9-17 campaign that ended a string of six straight winning seasons.

“Our theme is rebound,” eighth-year head coach Guy Hardaker said. “We want to not only be a great rebounding team, but we want to rebound from last season.

“This team will be fun to watch. They play hard and fast and they’re determined to bounce back from last season.”

The Bronchos return nine players from last year, including two full-time starters and two others who started at least seven games. Mix in several newcomers expected to make a huge impact and it’s clear that UCO is ready to make a big jump in the rug-ged Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

“We’ve got a good mix of returning and new players and they have blended well together,” said Hardaker, who is 135-72 and has guided the Bronchos to four Division II national tournament appearances. “We have a lot of in-terchangeable parts and the strength of our team will be our speed and overall size.”

Leading UCO’s quest for success will be senior leaders Jill Bryan and Britney Morgan, who have combined for 125 career starts.

Bryan has been a full-time starter the past two years and is one of the top long-range shooting threats in the league. She’s the leading returning scorer from last season after averaging 10.9 points and 5.1 rebounds a game with a team-high 40 3-pointers.

Morgan has started in every game (77) she’s played at UCO and will be the main quarterback in steering what should be a high-octane offensive attack. Morgan averaged 8.6 points, 2.8 assists and 2.3 rebounds a contest last year and has 114 career 3-pointers to her credit.

Five other letterwinners return from last year in senior Rachel New, junior Chelsea Robinson and sophomores Hayley Bryan, Whitney Dunn and Jordan Ward.

Rseason outlook

New averaged 3.8 points and 1.4 assists a game while making 10 starts a year ago and Dunn started seven times as a rookie, netting 5.5 points and 2.4 rebounds an outing on team-best 48.0 percent shooting from the field.

Bryan battled injury woes that limited her to 14 games in 2012-13, averaging 4.5 points and 2.4 rebounds a game. Ward, the fastest player on the team, added 2.1 points and 1.4 rebounds a contest.

Bryan is expected to battle for a starting berth in the post this winter while the other three returners will all see valuable minutes.

UCO also has back junior Tarrington Oakes and sophomore Haley Weathers.

Oakes has missed the last two years to injury, but is looking to make an impact in her return to the court. Weathers was a part-time starter in 2011-12 at league

rival Missouri Southern before redshirt-ing last year after transferring and the Bronchos are looking for big things from her.

Six newcomers join the roster this year, spearheaded by a pair of Division I transfers who figure to play prominent roles.

Sophomore Julia Mason came to UCO from Central Arkansas and is a multi-talented post player ready to move into the starting lineup, while junior Amber Makeever is a Colorado State transfer who will also push for a spot in the top five.

Also new to the team are freshmen Marley Anderson, Brittany Lancaster and Olivia

Mason and junior college move-in Krystal Fowler.

All four are looking to earn playing time, with Mason capable of taking

over a starting role.Juniors Chelsi Dennis and

Kylie Mayes will both sit out the season.

“Our players need to have a good understanding of their

individual roles,” Hardaker said. “We have to have confi-dence to make plays and learn to win the last two minutes of ball games.”

The Bronchos are also looking to benefit from having gone through a season of MIAA play, which features a host of teams that will vie for national tournament berths.

“We learned we have to be consistent for 40 minutes,” Hardaker said. “It’s a war of attrition and only the strong and healthy will survive in this conference. Our mental approach and toughness will help us win the close games.”

KEARNEY, Neb. (Feb. 1) – A late-game dry spell curtailed Central Okla-homa’s hopes of ending a lengthy losing streak as the Bronchos fell to Nebraska-Kearney 72-60.

The Bronchos trailed the hot-shooting Jennies 51-30 at halftime and were down by 27 (66-39) five minutes into the second half. UCO mounted a furious rally and used a 28-8 run to get within seven at 74-67 with 6:00 left before UCM scored the next five points to finally put the game away.

Coach Guy Hardaker’s squad pulled away in the final four minutes and out-scored the Blue Tigers 36-18 the last 11 minutes of the game to win going away.

Central Oklahoma has made six national tournament appearances, two in the now-defunct AIAW (American Intercollegiate Athletics for Women) and four in NCAA Division II.

The Bronchos have an 10-6 record in national tournament play, including a 5-4 mark in Division II.

UCO first qualified in 1975-76, defeating North Texas, 68-56, in the first round of the AIAW Division II Region IV Tournament before being eliminated by Northwest Louisiana, 89-80.

The Bronchos went back in 1981-82 and won four games to reach the quarterfinals of the AIAW Division II National Tournament.

UCO captured the Region IV Tournament crown with wins over Texas Christian (86-71), Ouchita Baptist (79-73) and Centenary (79-72) and then defeated Hofstra, 73-66, to make the quarterfinals before being eliminated by eventual champion Francis-Marion, 91-87.

UCO didn’t return to national tournament play again until 2007-08,

when the Bronchos earned their first NCAA Division II playoff bid with an at-large berth into the South Central Regional.

Coach Guy Hardaker’s crew knocked off St. Mary’s 75-73 in over-time in the first round before being eliminated by Washburn, 73-66.

UCO went back to the Division II national tournament in 2008-09, advancing to the Sweet 16 in making the South Central Regional finals.

The Bronchos opened with a 68-66 overtime win over Southeastern Oklahoma and then got past Washburn 72-63 in the semifinals before falling to host West Texas A&M 65-52 in the regional championship.

UCO made it back to the playoffs again in 2009-10, but fell to Northeastern State in the first round, 54-52.

The Bronchos qualified for the fourth straight time in 2010-11 and advanced to the Sweet 16 with back-to-back upsets, knocking off Washburn 65-64 and host Northeastern State 68-60 before falling in the regional finals to Northwest Missouri, 82-70.

Central Oklahoma plays all its home basketball games inside Hamilton Field House, which opened its doors on Jan. 8, 1965 when the UCO men’s team downed intrastate rival Northeastern State 64-52.

UCO’s women started playing in the 3,000-seat facility in 1980 and are 235-163 (59.0 winning percentage) in 32years, including a 57-22 mark (72.2 percent) over the past seven seasons under head coach Guy Hardaer.

Hamilton Field was re-named from Broncho Field House on May 1, 1993 in honor of long-time UCO coach and ath-letic director Dale Hamilton, who helped design the building in the 1960s.

The facility underwent extensive renovation before the 2001-02 season, with new chairback seats installed around the floor level.

Hamilton Field House is also the home facility for the vol-leyball and wrestling teams and numerous other events, including the university’s graduation ceremonies, are also held in the building.

Central Oklahoma is in its second year as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.

The MIAA, a 15-member conference of NCAA Division II insti-tutions in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma, was first or-ganized in 1912 as the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Over the past 100 years, the MIAA has gained the reputation of be-ing one of the top NCAA Division II conferences in the nation. MIAA schools have won 15 NCAA team championships and, since 1964, over 160 individual national titles.

The MIAA currently conducts champi-onships in eight sports for men and nine for women.

For the men, champions are crowned in football, cross country, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, baseball, tennis and golf.

The women compete for titles in vol-leyball, cross country, soccer, basketball, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball, golf and tennis.

The MIAA turned a new page on July 1, 1992, when the NCAA Division II confer-ence changed its name from the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics As-sociation.

The decision to make the change origi-nated in 1989, when Pittsburg State and Washburn became the first schools outside the state of Missouri to gain membership in the MIAA.

The conference was first organized in 1912 with 14 member institu-tions. Of those original members, Central Missouri, Truman State and Northwest Missouri State still remain a part of the MIAA.

The first change in membership came in 1924, when the MIAA reorganized to include only the five regional Missouri state colleges: Central Missouri, Truman (at the time known as Northeast Missouri

State), Northwest Missouri, Southeast Missouri State and Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State).

Over the next 56 years, three schools joined the membership: Missouri School of Mines (later Missouri-Rolla) in 1935, Lincoln in 1970 and the Missouri-St. Louis in 1980.

Ken Jones became the first full-time commissioner of the MIAA in 1981 and would be in the position for 16 years, retiring in 1997. Ralph McFillen succeeded Jones, serving 10 years before his retirement in

2007.Jim Johnson succeeded McFillen in July

of that year and served as commissioner until September of 2010, when Dr. Bob Boerigter took over.

Southwest Baptist brought membership back to eight schools in 1986, before the ma-jor expansion of the conference in 1989. Pitts-burg State, Washburn, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western began competition in the 1989-90 season.

Southeast Missouri State left the MIAA fol-lowing the 1990-91 season and was replaced by Emporia State in the 1991-92 season.

Missouri-St. Louis departed the MIAA in 1996, Missouri-Rolla left in 2005 and Lincoln forfeited its membership in 1999. Fort Hays State joined the MIAA in 2006, Nebraska-Omaha entered the league in 2008 and Lin-

coln re-joined the conference in 2010. On July 29, 2010, the MIAA CEO Council voted to extend invitations

to UCO and Northeastern State to become members of the league and on Sept. 24, 2010 it voted to extend invitations to Nebraska-Kearney and Lindenwood.

Nebraska-Omaha left the league in 2011 and Truman State did the same last year, which left the conference with 14 schools. Truman will remain an MIAA associate member in wrestling, with Newman joining the MIAA in that capacity.
