CRITIC: Renee ChowSITE: Tianjin, China

Some of the most successful urban spaces in Tianjin are those which were never explicitly set aside for their present use; excess sidewalk becomes walk-up retail, a partitioned segment of a courtyard becomes a dwelling. Lot 6 is a proposed redevelopment that hopes to accomodate such urban ‘happenings’ while offering a new, smarter and more ecologically sensitive overall building massing.

Lot 6 is a field condition generated by an algorithm. The rules of this algorithm guide self-organization of housing units for distributed density and southern sun exposure.

Lot 6 is one of 12 segments of a 5 block section of Wudadao studied by our studio. Wudadao, literally ‘five big roads’, is a district of Tianjin that is located in what was once the heart of the British concession: a segment of the city ceded to the British in 1860. During their posession of this part of the city, parts of Wudadao were rebuilt in the image of Great Britain.

Today, Wudadao is caught between rapid high-rise development from without and aggressive historic preservation from within. The 5 blocks studied by our studio are on this contested territory. One block north, massive tower blocks rise. Two blocks south, the streets are lined with buildings under historic protection.

Our studio sought to create a smooth transition from the comparative low density of Wudadao to the ever increasing density of the nearby CBD.

SKY INSTITUTECRITIC: William TilsonSITE: Calhoun County, Florida

The Sky Institute is a proposed renewable energy research institute in Florida. The building works as a formal and programmatic bridge between woods and field.

The building is comprised of a long, low slung laboratory building and a series of modular residences for visiting researchers and educators.

The project forms a gateway to an extensive prairie and wetland. It straddles the line between a patch of conserved old growth woods and replanted scrub pine, meticulously depicted in the model.

[13]

The approach to the project is aligned to skirt the perimeter of the old-growth woods and insert the occupant directly into the heart of the project.

The landscape strategy is anchored by three gardens which collectively perform as a sort of outdoor classroom/case study: An ordnamental garden, an individual productive garden, and a massive agricultural garden for self sufficient food production. These are fed by a grey water collection ditch that ultimately drains to the wetlands at the low end of the site.

CRITIC: William TilsonSITE: Calhoun County, Florida

The Wetlands House is comprised of two interdependent structures: a low space for entertaining and a narrow tower for privacy and sleep. It occupies a sloping site facing a stretch of wetlands in Calhoun County, Fl.

The house works with Florida’s hot/humid climate with a series of passive strategies. The house minimizes enclosed, conditioned space to 800 sq. feet. Living areas are kept low and thoroughly shaded, but open to cross-ventilation. The direction and control of water and on-site runoff retention are fundamental drivers of the design.

An exploration of digital fabrication techniques in collaboration with Christopher DeHenzel, Ileana Acevedo, Bryan Allen, and Roxanne Levy [Team BAMF], the ‘thunderdome’ is a shaded space to watch matches of Kubb, a nordic lawn game played by occupants of Wurster hall.

The folded plate structural diagram is reinterpreted as a structural skin. Parametric form-finding in Grasshopper, in conjunction with stress/strain analysis using Autodesk ALGOR, enabled us to adequately estimate the structural behavior of the structure prior to assembly.

DIGITAL CEMENTCOLLABORATION: Rael-San Fratello ArchitectsSITE: 2010 Biennial of the Americas, Denver, Colorado

Research in 3D printing with cement, Digital Cement is the culmination of work completed while at Rael-San Fratello Architects. This project was later presented at the Biennial of the Americas, 2010.

We envisioned the exhibition as a landscape of various formal/material explorations, ambiguously scaled and occupied. Intersperesed across this table are the implements of the research, the exhibit tells the story of the objects’ making.

H ILL HOUSINGCRITIC: Francisco Pardo & Zac RockettSITE: Scribe Winery, Sonoma, California

This proposal for visitor and worker housing at a winery in Sonoma County, CA implements an algorithm to select a site and aggregate a series of subtly varied dwelling units.

The algorithm begins by parcelizing the landscape and evaluating aspect and cardinal orientation. South facing, steeply sloped parcels are converted public plazas for their excellent solar exposure, an innovative stepped typology is used to take advantage of this condition moving down the slope.

COLLABORATION: Fox + BearSITE: Chicago, Illinois

A proposed visitor’s center and sauna for Ping Tom Park in Chicago, Dam[n] the Chicago River seeks to sensationalize the polluted waters of the river while simultaneously cleaning them and providing an urban spa and swimming hole.

Diversion of the river from its present, channelized course recreates the historic flow of the river in this section. Along this historic flow, a wetland provides filtration and remediation for the water that passes through.

Once the water reaches Ping Tom Park, an architectural insertion provides a public viewing area of the river along with a spa and swimming area fed from the wetland.

COLLABORATION: BIOMSSITE: Tianjin, China

Proposed for the city of Tianjin, this speculative reinvention of the skyscraper was a Finalist in the Evolo 2010 skyscraper competition.

Envisioned as an urban lung, the Detoxification Tower is driven by a formal logic that attempts to scale air-pollution scrubbing building technology to densities of particulate matter at different atmospheric strata. Through interconneection with existing infrastructure and the creation of interlinkages with other Detoxification Towers, this project imagines a vast network working in concert to purify the air of some of the world’s most polluted cities.

CRITIC: Alfonso PerezSITE: San Martin de las Cañas, Jalsico, Mexico

This design for a dance studio is programmatically targeted to encourage more young people to remain in San Martin de las Cañas, a small town which has encouraged a rapid exodus of young people to nearby, cosmpolitan Gudalajara.

The design was developed through a series of urban analytical mappings of water. The Dance Studio is equal parts practice and performance space, raised high above the muddy and steep topography of a nearby bull fighting ring and reservoir.

Below the Dance Studio, an elevated exterior boardwalk gives citizens of San Martin a dry and protected route to and from the reservoir.
