Mountain View Celebrates

42nd Annual Art & Wine FestivalTurning Up the Heat This Year With “Salsa Sunday”

Festival insiders know the Mountain View Art & Wine Festival is the crème de la crème on the Bay Area

festival scene. Voted “Best Festival in the South Bay” multiple times by readers of Metro and still hitting on all cylinders better than ever, this year’s 42nd annual festival, Sept. 7-8 promises to be a “festi-val like no other”.

An authentic and moveable feast for the senses. The cool, vibrant, multi-cultural Castro Street vibe. Exceptional handcrafted work by 600 of America’s top artists and craftmakers. Stellar live music on stage and street throughout downtown with a new “Salsa Sunday” theme this year. Fabulous food and drink. The Comcast Pigskin Party Lounge with giant screen TV. Artisan specialty food purveyors. Home and garden exhibits. Health and wellness displays. An organic and green products showcase. Tons of fun and games for kids with ultra thrilling bungee jumping and super fun roll-on-water “waterballerz” among the amazing attractions. An affordable, sun-splashed, memorable, leisure-filled weekend.

Widely considered one of America’s top art festivals, huge throngs of art lovers are expected to pour onto Castro Street in Silicon Valley’s epicenter for this “Cul-tural Community Celebration” presented by the Chamber of Commerce Mountain View. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. Admission is free.

THe BeginningMountain View’s longtime signature

event, the Art & Wine Festival was launched in 1971 as the first major fund-

raiser for the Chamber of Commerce. Today, it is considered one of the nation’s top art festivals. Realizing the goal of its founders, the festival provides a consis-tent stream of revenue that helps fund Chamber programs throughout the year. Proceeds are invested in carefully crafted programs that help strengthen and bring together Mountain View’s diverse com-munity. Among the programs sponsored by the Chamber are Yipee (Young Innova-tive Professional Entrepreneurs Etc), SOAR — a mentorship/internship program, Business ConneXions and Leadership Mountain View.

Takin‘ it to the Streets

Two full days of dynamite music for fans of all musical styles transform downtown Mountain View into the

Bay Area’s entertainment mecca during the Art & Wine Festival, September 7-8 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Castro Street. Thirteen big-name bands with all the moves and all the grooves play a wide-ranging musical mix on stage and street.

We’re turning up the heat on “Salsa Sunday” with two of the Bay Area’s top Latin bands – Orquesta Borinquen and Ruckatan Latin Tribe – bringing their own spicy flavor of salsa, Reggae, and Caribbean tunes from 1:30 to 6 p.m. on the main stage in Civic Center Plaza.

Orquesta Borinquen features some of the youngest and most talented musicians in

the Bay Area salsa scene today. Lead by Bill Ortega Sr. and directed by his son Bill Ortega Jr., Borinquen always puts on an electrifying show and then some.

Ruckatan Latin Tribe brings their original world music to the scene that generates positive energy and spirit to their many fans. The seven members have all contributed to the local Latin rock scene in the Bay Area and internationally and hail from three dif-ferent continents.

Tennessee River was formed in January of 2002 with the idea of bringing back and paying tribute to one of the most influential and vocally dynamic country bands of our time – Alabama. Tennessee River combines the essence of Alabama with their own

unique sound and live show to produce both a visual and audible feast.

Pinky Rideau & Blind Resistance offers up a Blues Plate Special array of music that you won’t forget. You can bet on hearing toe-tapping, hip-shaking, earth-quaking blues from all sub genres, including gospel, rock, delta, Chicago, country, R&B, and maybe even a little back porch blues.

The Houserockers are a 10-piece rock & soul band from Los Gatos with a wailing five piece horn section and rock solid rhythm section. Known for their eclectic, high energy set lists, the Houserockers bring the music of the Rolling Stones, Earth Wind and Fire, Tower of Power, and much more to life.

The Pacific Soul Band offers a unique blend of genres, covering music from R&B, old-school, funk, hip-hop, reggae, Ruckatan Latin Tribe

neo-soul, soft rock, and Top 40 dance tunes from the past and present.

Beyond the stage, the Bay Area’s best performers will be taking their music to the streets throughout downtown to entertain festivalgoers throughout the weekend.

Ancient Winds, led by Jose Cabezas, plays the traditional and contemporary folk music of the Andes mountain region.

Headed by brothers Ferris and Torin Mar-tinez, Glitterface has cultivated a devoted

fan base with the exciting and unique blend of acoustic, jazz, and hip-hop they bring to origi-nals and covers.

ing his unique sound. His combination of expression, technique and musical emotion is like nothing heard before.

Hubert Emerson is a natural, self-taught musician and a San Francisco gem. His unique sound comes from exposure to both Caribbean and European music genres, as well as American soul music.

Oscar Reynolds is perhaps best recognized for playing the Bolivian pan flutes and guitar simultaneously, displaying tight control and a

stream of emotions into his complex runs.Since 1994, Aryeh Frankfurter has been

delighting audiences around the globe with his passionate, enduring, and evoca-tive music. His uncommon approach to the Celtic harp and folk harp repertoire.
