When you think about the month of February, do thoughts of
romance and Valentine's Day come to mind? If you're a
football fan, perhaps Super Bowl Sunday comes to mind. There
is a lot more to February than valentines, romantic rendezvous,
and Super Bowl champions. There are other holidays during the
month, many famous people celebrate their birthday in February and many historic events
took place during the second month of the year.
February comes from the Latin word februum which means purification. In the old Roman
calendar the purification ritual called Februa was held on February 15th. February is the
second month of the year in the Gregorian calendar. It is the only month with twenty eight
days. In leap year which occurs every four years, February has twenty nine days.
The birthstone for February is amethyst which is purple quartz.
Amethyst was a symbol of royalty in the Middle Ages. The Amethyst
is associated with stability, peace, balance, courage, inner strength,
sincerity and a calm disposition. The healing properties of the
February birthstone are reputed to be effective for health problems
relating to the withdrawal symptoms of any sort of addiction,
headaches, insomnia, arthritis, pain relief, circulatory system issues
and general healing. The Amethyst is also referred to as the "sobriety
stone" as it was once believed to prevent drunkenness and used to
treat alcoholism and other types of addictions.
The flower for the month of February is the iris which is Greek
for rainbow. An alternate flower for February is the violet. It
represents faithfulness, modesty and virtue.
Aquarius and Pisces are the astrological signs for February.
Birthdays from February 1st through the 18th fall under the sign
of Aquarius. February 19th through the 29th birthdays fall under
the sign of Pisces.
Love life and life will love you
back. Love people and they will
love you back.

February Holidays and Observances
Groundhog Day takes place on February 2nd. If the groundhog sees his
shadow this year, it means we'll have six more weeks of winter. If he
doesn't, spring is just around the corner.
Super Bowl Sunday/also known as Super Sunday, is now played on the
first Sunday in February. For many years, the Super Bowl has had a very
large television audience in the U.S., and it is often the most watched
television program of the year. On average, 80 to 90 million Americans are
tuned into the Super Bowl at any given moment." That explains why it's one
of the largest in-home party days of the year.
Mardi Gras - "Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday" (in ethnic English tradition,
Shrove Tuesday), Shrove Day referring to the practice of the last night of
eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which
started on Ash Wednesday. Popular practices included wearing masks and
costumes, dancing, sports competitions, parades, etc.
The most well known holiday of the month is February 14th,
Valentine's Day. Be sure to get your sweetheart something special
on this romantic holiday!
President's Day is celebrated on the third Monday in February.
Historic Events in February
Many major events happened during the second month of the year. Here are four
historical events that took place in February.
The National Weather Service was established on February 9, 1870.
The Boys Scouts of America were founded on February 8, 1910.
Iwo Jima Day - U.S. Marines raised the flag on Mt. Suribachi (Battle of Iwo Jima)
on February 23, 1945.
The Columbia Space Shuttle tragedy took place on February 1, 2003. The Shuttle
was scheduled to land at the Kennedy Space Center. The crew of seven was lost
when the Columbia Space Shuttle broke up over north-central Texas about 16
minutes before its scheduled landing.

President’s Message
I was pleased to see so many residents attend the Annual Meeting (64 plus 7 proxies).
Your interest and support is appreciated. My thanks to Jerry Butler who served as our
capable parliamentarian.
I welcome our new HOA Board of Directors and extend our thanks to retiring Board
members Tammy Anthis and Jim Fitch.
We are now into the middle of our snowbird season and this time should be filled with
many activities. Please check Gator Tales, the outside bulletin board and the signup
sheets in the clubhouse for your choice of activities. We are continuing to search for a
coordinator (or 2) for the Spring Yard Sale. Please contact me or any Board Member to
let us know of your willingness to help.
Our next Board meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 5 at 7:00 p.m. You are
welcome to come and listen. The next General Meeting is on Tuesday, February 12 at
7:00 p.m. I look forward to seeing you there.
I am always amazed at the many good things that go on in our community and pleased
that there is so little friction. There will always be those small niggling problems that you
and I will have to work through. I leave you with one of my favorite poems to assist your
thoughts in this vital area:
The Right Kind of People
By: Edwin Markham
Gone the city, gone the day
Yet still the story and the meaning stay:
Once where a prophet in the palm shade based,
A traveler chanced at noon to rest his mules.
“What sort of people may they be,” he asked,
“In this proud city on the plains o’erspread?”
“Well, friend what sort of people whence you came?”
“What sort?” the packman scowled; “ why, knaves and fools!”
“You’ll find the people here the same,” the wise man said.
Another stranger in the dusk drew near,
And pausing, cried, “What sort of people here
In your bright city where yon towers arise?”
“Well, friend, what sort of people whence your came?”
“What sort?” the pilgrim smiled, “Good, true and wise.”
“You’ll find the people here the same,” the wise man said.

Lake Hammock Village rang in the New Year, New York’s
Times Square style. On December 31st, the Clubhouse
was filled with residents to celebrate Auld Lang Syne
(meaning “as time goes by”). The evening was packed
with many door prize drawings and games, which
included the following: Remember That… trivia, won by
Karen Patelunas, Musical Chairs Scavenger Hunt won by
June Evans, Peanuts in the Jar guessing game won by
Jane Lallier, 2012 Year in Review/New Year’s Knowledge
Trivia won by Doug Simpson, and Non-Family/Family
Feud won by the team of Jan Baczkiewicz, Joyce
Ladyman, Betty Pall and Sharon Bowden. For their win,
each team member received a box of Smarties, flown in from Canada for this special event. The team then
played an individual round and after a tie breaker, Sharon came in first place, Jan in 2nd, Joyce in 3rd and Betty
in 4th. At 10 pm, we had our first countdown to 2013 and the dance floor was filled with 100 balloons from
the balloon drop. After that, party goers enjoyed the buffet provided by the HOA. While enjoying their meal,
residents were graced with a psychic show by Lake Hammock’s own, “The Great Swami” (a/k/a Pete Evans)
and his lovely assistant, Jerry Butler. Great job
gentlemen!! At 11 pm it was time to sound the bell and
inform everyone that there was one hour left before the
New Year. During the evening many residents showed
off their talents by singing Karaoke to the music provided
by our Park DJ’s, Clark and Joice Smith. Thank you Clark
and Joice for providing us, once again, with such
wonderful entertainment. Many residents hung out
until the final countdown and watched Lake Hammock’s
“Waterford Crystal” Ball fall from the flag pole by the
pool. It was a beautiful evening and the fireworks in the background made the event even more spectacular.
I would like to send a Special Thanks to my New Year’s Eve Party Committee, David and Phyllis Lennox and my
wonderful husband Carl for all your help in organizing, planning and carrying out the event. In addition, I
would also like to extend special thanks to the following: Phyllis Lennox and Nanci Emery for all the food
preparation, Gary and Tammy Saunders for their help in decorating and to all those residents, (too many to
name), who assisted in the cleanup. Lastly, I want to send a heartfelt apology to the Clubhouse decorating
committee for any inconvenience we caused by removing the Christmas decorations prior to January 2nd. We
were unaware of the required time to leave up the Christmas décor and apologize for removing them for the
New Year’s Eve party decorations. I wish each and everyone one of you a Happy, Healthy, Safe and
Prosperous 2013. Happy New Year!!

A young woman was taking an afternoon nap. After she woke up, she told her husband, “I just dreamed
that you gave me a pearl necklace for Valentine’s Day. What do you think it means? “You’ll know
tonight” he said. That evening, the man came home with a small package and gave to to his wife.
Delighted, she opened it--only to find a book entitled “The meaning of dreams.”

SPECIAL POEM FOR SENION CITIZENS!!!
A row of bottles on my shelf
caused me to analyze myself.
One yellow pill I have to pop
goes to my heart so it won’t stop.
A little white one that I take
goes to my hands so they won’t shake.
The blue ones that I use a lot
tell me I’m happy when I’m not.
The purple pill goes to my brain
and tells me that I have no pain.
The capsules tell me not to wheeze
or cough or choke or even sneeze.
The red ones, smallest of them all
go to my blood so I won’t fall.
The orange ones, very big and bright
prevent my leg cramps in the night.
Such an array of brilliant pills
helping to cure all kinds of ills.
But what I’d really like to know……
is what tells each one where to go!
There’s always a lot to be ‘thankful’ for if you
take time to look for it.
Matter of fact, I am sitting here thinking
how nice it is that wrinkles don’t hurt.

A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband
stalking around with a fly swatter. “What are you doing?”
she asked. “Hunting flies” he responded. “Oh!, killed any?”
she asked. “Yep, 3 males, 2 females”, he replied. Intrigued,
she asked. “How can you tell?” He responded, “3 were on a
beer can, 2 were on the phone.”

LAKE HAMMOCK VILLAGE ANTIQUE ROADSHOW
Thanks to everyone who helped make the Antique Roadshow a great success. Our
knowledgeable appraisers, Herb Hunt, Carol
and Ernie Kowalchuk were kept busy as 26
residents brought a variety of “treasures” to
be examined. The displays were varied and
most interesting. Folks enjoyed chatting with
friends and neighbors while partaking of the
