Welcome to the Twin Cities Trading Group. Our next meeting is Thursday, Mar 14th, from 6:30-9:30pm at the Oak Grove Middle School, 1350 W. 106th St., Bloomington, MN (see page 3 for directions). There is a $5.00 entry fee.

Recap of February Meeting

The previous meeting of the TCTG was held on Feb 14th , with 15 attendees (low turnout due to Val-Day?). We were in Room 610, and Valentine candy was at the check-in desk.

While we were still setting up, John shared multicolored rubber-tipped styluses with those who bravely attempted to use smart phones outside in winter, while wearing gloves.

Dennis gave a quick introduction, greeted the new members, and we heard a little about each’s new

member’s trading background. This month, a wireless mic was made available to the presenters.

Linda H. presented

Lambert’s Stock Pick of the Month:

Hercules Technology Growth Capital (NYSE:HTGY), the senior unsecured debt of Hercules Technology Growth Capital (Nasdaq: HTGC), a business development company (BDC) that invests in small private technology firms.

Total investments expanded 19% during the first nine months of 2012 to a record $774.5 million.

Hercules is expected to continue on a growth path. Consensus estimates see revenues increasing 20% in 2012 and another 25% in 2013. Net investment income is also forecast to grow about 6% in fiscal 2012 and another 14% in 2013.

Stock picks such as these can help us create portfolios that deliver a steady stream of income in the years ahead.

John attempted to show how to sign up for a free TDA PaperMoney account, but those

links were removed in a recent TDA/ToS website redesign.

Next shown were the locations of: - pre-recorded SwimLesson

webinars (Support/Chat button, Seminars, Archived Seminars, Watch button from the ToS ThinkDesktop platform),

- stock & options training videos (see link tinyurl.com/tctg-learn to ThinkorSwim Learning Center), and

- more training videos from the main TD Ameritrade website: Education tab, Webcasts, Active Trader / View Schedule link, then from the Archived Live Events - View Anytime section. Note that the new/live webinars display under Upcoming Live Events - Select events to begin Registration.

The 65-minute Active Trader webinar, Step into thinkorswim technology was played.

John then demonstrated a spreadsheet (Mac/Numbers) he uses to create his long or short stock setups. This helps him determine whether this setup fits the criteria he learned at Online Trading Academy (e.g. max risk per loss, acceptable reward:risk ratios, multiple

target percentages, among others) to generate a profitable trade. He mentioned he was creating a database that would do all this and more...stay tuned for details.

On the ThinkDesktop Active Trader window, using the relative-to-entry price offsets calculated for the stop and two targets, John made a single order with two OCO* brackets, each with target & stop, and then started to select the long entry point from the Active Trader “price ladder.”

That’s where the school’s wired and wireless network dropped its Internet connection. After determining (it wasn’t my fault!) the problem, John re-submitted the order, and showed where the multiple pieces of the order displayed on the chart.

Note on the ToS platform, Active Trade window: when you are using an OTO* entry order to trigger several orders, you may enter the target/stop prices as Relative to the entry +1.23, -0.65, a tick offset, or a % offset.

*Terminology: OTO=One Triggers Other, (a.k.a. OSO: One Sends Other) lets you send off, or trigger, several orders once the first (usually an entry) is filled.

The OCO (One Cancels Other) bracket allows you to

either hit your target price or get out at your stop price--whichever price is reached first. Especially nice is an OCO with a trailing stop, so as the price moves in your favor, you gain more ground, and even if you are stopped out (don’t hit your target), your loss is smaller, perhaps even a small profit.

Linda H. showed five chart studies from John Carter that we applied to

various stocks that attendees called out.

From the chart, select the test tube icon (Edit Studies), type in “john carter” in the Studies search window to find them. The five studies are named “TTM_” followed by LRC, ScalperAlert, Squeeze, Trend, or Wave.

Dennis showed how to place several different types of options trades using the ThinkDesktop platform also.

Next came the raffle for two books and a ThinkorSwim mousepad, then the meeting concluded at 9:30pm, but several discussions continued.
