(ARA) - Buying a gift forthe college-bound studentcan be a challenge, whetherit's a high-school graduationpresent or a back-to-univer-sity purchase. While mostyoung people would likelywelcome a technology gift, itcan be difficult to know whatthey'll find most useful-espe-cially if they already havenearly every gadget imagina-ble.
If you'll be buying for a col-lege kid this summer, hereare five tech gift ideas thatcan help make their collegecareers easier, more fun andmore memorable:
• Make it a Mac – Chancesare, he already has an iPodhe treasures and she couldn'tget through the day withouther iPhone. And a laptop isan essential tool for everyone
in college these days. TheMacBook Pro's durable hard-ware, appealing design andability to run Windows makeit a great choice for students. It will work seamlessly withother Apple gadgets, and caneven run Windows applica-tions – all on one computer.
• Making a Mac playnicely with Windows pro-grams – Challenges withrunning Windows softwareon Mac machines may havecaused some users to shyaway from Apple products inthe past, but those issues canbe resolved easily. ParallelsDesktop 7 for Mac allowsusers to run both Mac andWindows apps at the sametime on their Mac, withoutthe need to restart the com-puter. The software allowsusers to copy, cut and pastebetween Windows and Mac
apps, and run other systemslike Google Chrome or Win-dows 8 Consumer Preview. Italso works with the ParallelsMobile app for iPad, iPhoneand iPod touch so users canaccess and run everythingon their Mac from anywhere.A free trial is available fordownload atwww.parallels.com/desktop.
• Mainstream and reli-able – Even if they have aMac, your college studentcan still use Microsoft Officefor Home and Student 2010for Windows. This essentialproductivity softwareincludes many of the basicsoftware that most business-es depend upon, includingExcel, Word, PowerPoint andOne Note. It includes fea-tures such as creating a PivotTable Chart in Excel that arenot in the Mac version of
Office, so go for the PC ver-sion and pair it withParallels Desktop for Mac toget all the features studentsneed to succeed at school andwork.
• Storage and backupoptions – College studentscreate, move, use and savevolumes of data every day, whether it's downloadingmusic, uploading video orsubmitting work assign-ments via online portals. Thesheer amount of data theywork with means that stor-age and backup capabilitiesare essential. Hardware likeUSB flash drives or SD cardscan provide plenty of extrastorage for moving data. Most importantly, to back upvaluable data and workassignments, students willbenefit from an externalbackup drive or even a sub-
scription to an online back-up service so they don't loseeverything on their comput-er if it crashes, is lost orstolen.
• Don't forget the funstuff – Higher education isall about schoolwork, and abusy social life is a vital partof the experience for manycollege students. Technologygifts that enhance the funaspects of school will be awelcome addition to any stu-dent's stable of gadgetry. Anew digital camera, satelliteradio or TV service, or evena new MP3 player can allhelp students tap into the funof college life.
Finding just the right giftfor your graduate or risingcollege student can be simpleand satisfying when you mixa bit of creativity with use-fulness.

Why tech careers are in high demandTechnology profes-
sionals continue to bein high demand acrossa wide array of indus-tries. Health care, tech-nical consulting andcomputer system de-sign are just a few ofthe growing career dir-ections grads canchoose with a technolo-gy degree.
The technology in-dustry remains one ofthe fastest growingcareer fields. Employ-ment in computer sys-tems designs and relat-ed services is anticipat-ed to grow by 47 percentthrough 2020, accordingto the U.S. Bureau ofLabor Statistics. Bycontrast, employmentexpectations are de-creasing by 1 percentduring the same time
period in the manufac-turing fields and by 6percent in utilities, mostly due to outsourc-ing of industry formanufacturing and im-provements in technol-ogy for utilities.
Because businesseswill need technical ad-vice on planning andlogistics, as well asadding or using newtechnologies to helpimprove business serv-ices, there is a need fortechnical consultantsto fill these jobs, inmany different indus-tries.
"With the rate ofchange in the IT indus-try where new informa-tion is doubling in 18 to24 month intervals, thedemand for IT person-nel with proven learn-
ing abilities is verydesirable," said Dr. W.Lynn McKinney, com-puter information sci-ence program directorat Everest University inMelbourne, Fla. "Ourpremise is to teach peo-ple how to learn."
In addition, as morecomplex technologiescontinue to develop, companies seek em-ployees who stay up todate with new technolo-
gies. "While some ofour students have justgraduated, we also findthat many students inour computer technolo-gy courses have workedbefore and are comingto us because they wantto stay on top of ad-vances in the field. They realize that a tech-nology degree can givethem the career theyare looking for," saidEric Hodge, academic
program chair of Ever-est University in Pom-pano Beach, Fla., one ofFlorida's computertraining schools.
In addition to goodcomputer technologytraining, businessesare searching for em-ployees with problem-solving abilities.
"Employers are in-creasingly telling usthat they don't wantemployees with justcomputer knowledge, they want employeeswho use computerknow-how to solveproblems," said Hodge.
Cybersecurity is ahigh demand field rightnow, and the growth isnot anticipated to slowdown anytime soon. This is due to business-es in both the public
and private sectorsbecoming more awareof the need for informa-tion security.
"As more companiesand individuals aredoing business on theInternet, companiesare finding they need tobuild and maintain da-tabases to store impor-tant information ontheir customers, prod-ucts and sales," saidHodge. "Companies in-creasingly store sensi-tive information elec-tronically, and as aresult, they need to pro-tect that information."
"Because of thegrowth in the technolo-gy industry, there is ahuge demand for infor-mation technologygraduates right now,"said Hodge.

With the economy stillrecovering from the GreatRecession and increasedglobal competition, manydisillusioned workers havebeen left wondering: “Howcan I set myself apart withina shrinking job market?”Beyond degree attainmentand experience, achievingspecialized certification inyour chosen field may beyour best bet.
Earning certification is asignal to current or prospec-tive employers of your dedi-cation to your craft, and ademonstration of yourexpertise and experience. Itis a validation of your skillsand knowledge and it cansimultaneously enhanceyour professional reputationwhile providing an opportu-nity for continuing educa-
tion and professional devel-opment.
For service or product-based industries, certifica-tion helps demonstrate toconsumers the quality ofyour work.
Another significant benefit– and one most often citedanecdotally – is salary. Whileearning a certificate in yourchosen field is by no means aguarantee of a pay raise, itmay raise your salary ceilingand strengthen your negoti-ating power.
To be true, achieving certi-fication is a process, and onenot to be taken lightly. De-pending on your industry, itcould mean passing chal-lenging field assessments orcertification exams. In somefields, candidates may needto undergo a rigorous appli-
cation process through anindustry-specific certifica-tion agency or may have towin over a panel of theirpeers with a presentation oftheir work portfolio. Eachindustry has unique proce-dures and practices.
And the market for certifi-cation is larger than ever, with employers placing con-tinued emphasis on ad-vanced skills in global busi-ness management, projectmanagement, informationtechnology, skilled tradesand other traditional fieldsto more modern credentialsin sustainable and greenenergy or next generationdesign.
National and local profes-sional organizations are avaluable resource for learn-ing more about certification.
Many provide trainingcourses, workshops or prepmaterials for those contem-plating pursuing a creden-tial. You’ll also be able tolearn from peers who havealready gone through theprocess. In addition to pro-fessional organizations, many colleges and universi-ties offer professional devel-opment and continuing edu-cation programs. The Centerfor Professional Develop-ment at Excelsior Collegeoffers more than 100 online,non-credit courses and car-eer training programs, frombusiness marketing andentrepreneurship to projectmanagement, human re-sources and even investiga-tive science.
The important point toremember is that you are
your greatest asset. By con-tinually investing in yourskills and capabilities, youopen doors of opportunityand further your potential. You signal to your col-leagues, employer and futureemployers that you have themotivation and drive toremain on the forefront ofadvancements in businesspractice, technology andindustry standards. Thechallenges employers faceand the dynamic, constantlyevolving marketplace inwhich they operate require ahighly skilled and flexibleworkforce. Certification pro-grams can be an effectivemeans to ensure your knowl-edge base is well alignedwith valued and sought aftercompetencies and capabili-ties.
Certification can improve job prospects

Other than buying ahome and automobile, acollege education is oneof the biggest invest-ments Americans typi-cally make. On average,in-state tuition and feesat a four-year publiccollege increased bymore than 8 percent to$8,244 for the 2011-2012academic year, androom and board nowaverages more than$17,000 per year.
Fortunately, you maybe able to cut your col-lege costs at income taxtime with a variety ofcredits, deductions andsavings plans.
The American Oppor-tunity and LifetimeLearning Credits arelikely to result in thebiggest tax rewards on
your federal return. The following basic re-quirements apply toboth credits:
• Filing status on thereturn cannot be “mar-ried filing separately.”
• The student must beyou, your spouse or adependent for whomyou claim an exemp-tion.
• A dependent cannotclaim the credits ifclaimed on another per-son’s (e.g. parents’)return.
• If you do not claimthe dependent exemp-tion (even if entitled tothe exemption), youcannot claim a creditbased on that depen-dent’s expenses.
• Claim credits onForm 8863 and file with
your Federal 1040.In addition, both cred-
its cannot be claimedfor the same student,Jessi Dolmage, spokes-woman for TaxACT, ex-plained. “If multiplestudents are claimed ona return, the taxpayershould choose the cred-it that yields the biggestbenefit for each stu-dent.”
The American Oppor-tunity Credit is a modi-fied version of the HopeCredit. It’s worth up to$2,500 for tuition, feesand course materialsper student for the firstfour years of postsec-ondary education. Evenif you have zero tax lia-bility, you can get up to40 percent as a refund. It phases out at higher
incomes.The Lifetime Learn-
ing Credit is worth upto 20 percent of the first$10,000 in higher educa-tion expenses per fami-ly for an unlimitednumber of years. Likethe American Oppor-tunity Credit, it phasesout at higher incomes.
Several other collegeand higher educationtax breaks can also beclaimed on this year’sfederal tax returns.
Up to $2,500 in studentloan interest paid eachyear for qualified high-er education expensescan be deducted, even ifyou don’t itemize. The
deduction phases out athigher incomes and isreduced by nontaxabledistributions from aCoverdell EducationSavings Account, sav-ings bond interest usedfor education expensesand scholarships or vet-eran’s education bene-fits. Married taxpayersfiling separately andpeople claimed as adependent on anotherreturn don’t qualify.
Additional exceptionsmay apply to the afore-mentioned tax breaks, and other educationaltax benefits exist forQualified Tuition Pro-grams, student loan
cancellations and re-payment assistance,Coverdell EducationSavings Accounts, edu-cation savings bonds,employer-provided edu-cational assistance andwork-related education.Learn more about alleducation tax benefitsin Publication 970 atwww.irs.gov.
