O ur cover features Lake Travis resident Amanda Tatum photographed poolside, at the water-front home of Jeffrey and Monica DeCoux of Lakeway. Amanda grew up in Bellville, outside of Houston, but summered at Lake Travis for years. She and her husband Brad are part of a wave of

professionals and business owners with young families who are gravitating to our area for the beauty, quality of life and opportunities our growing area offers. Amanda is a Realtor® with Capital City Sotheby’s International Realty, specializing in Farm and Ranch, Equestrian and Luxury properties, like the one pictured here.

When it was built in 2001, the pool, built by Hank Thompson of Cascade Custom Pools, was the largest residential pool ever built in the state of Texas. It was also Robert Rodriquez’s pick to shoot the pool scenes in his movie Machete. This pool, also pictured below left, is not your average pool.

And Hank Thompson is not your average pool builder. Hank Thompson’s company, CASCADE CUSTOM POOLS, is cel-

ebrating their 30th anniversary and, to his knowledge, Hank doesn’t know of anyone in this town that has been building pools under the same company name and ownership for as long as he has.

This extraordinary record of success is due to a combination of factors, including exceptional creativity and the ability to offer the complete portfolio of options for the pool and outdoor living space that you would expect from a superior custom pool builder. But perhaps CASCADE CUSTOM POOLS greatest strength comes from being a family-owned business that capitalizes on Hank Thompson’s charismatic and personal touch, Theresa’s finance and business knowledge, as well as, their son T.J.’s design and marketing skills. As Hank puts it, “I’m in your backyard every day. From the time you first talk to me to the time I hand you the keys to the pool, you have one chain of command…and my exclusive attention. I have great people working for me, but I am there through every phase of the project.”

Hank Thompson built all of Sandra Bullock’s pools, and he also built a pool for his hero, Tom Landry. He prides himself on the diver-

sity of his work, from concepts that are lavish and over-the-top, to the very creative or to pools that seam flawlessly with natural settings. He special-izes in “impossible” pools… “cliffhangers” and other pools characterized by difficult construction challenges. He has built pools in backyards where five different pool companies had previously told the owner that putting in a pool would be impos-sible. He once rented a crane to lift a tractor over the roof of a home to an inaccessible backyard. The crane was so enormous that he had to get clearance from the FAA.

About the Cover

Hank Thompson and Tommy Cain have known each other since they were in college and Hank has built a number of pools for Tommy over the years. Pictured left is the pool CASCADE designed for Tommy, a stunning reproduction of a 1959 Gibson Les Paul guitar. In fact, it is the guitar Tommy plays when he performs with his band The Big Johnsons. Hank and Theresa’s son, T.J. Thompson designs all CASCADE’S pools, and the general consensus is that he knocked this design out of the park. The guitar strings are made from glass tiles, the fountain is the guitar’s volume control and the headstock is the spa which flows into the neck of the guitar.

“After interviewing multiple pool builders we decided to hire Hank Thompson with CASCADE CUSTOM POOLS. Cascade’s designs, experience and professionalism were not only noticed by us, but by most of the leading architects in Austin. During the building process Hank stayed on top of all the details, including design enhancements that made dramatic improvements to the overall aesthetics. We have known Hank for over 10 years now and continue to believe Cascade is the superior pool builder in central Texas.” —Jeffrey DeCoux

Triple Threat at The Reserve

T he reserve at Lake Travis, John Eagle European and Sail & Ski combined to launch a triple threat to discretionary income with a tantalizing taste of what it might feel like to own some of their high

dollar toys. On a flawless day at the end of April, guests toured The Reserve’s Cliffside Cottages and took test drives in their choice of luxury autos, including Bentleys, Rolls Royce and Aston Martin. Guest of Sail & Ski were wined and dined al fresco at the Reserve Marina, enjoyed boarding privileges on several models of Meridian yachts and listened to Latin and Caribbean tunes played by Acoustic Jungle. The highlight of the Sail & Ski event was the christening of three gleaming Meridian yachts by their new owners Brad Harwell and Stephen Ovalle, Hank and Robin Von Der Bruegge, and Bob and Kay Pryor. Each shared anecdotes of boating and of the process of selecting a name for their new yacht before the christening ceremony. Friends and family raised their glasses in a toast and asked for safe passage for all who sail in them.

A llyn Johnson took a simple boat detail company he started fourteen years ago and transformed it into a flourishing yacht management company providing three levels of service: annual boat management, yacht management and an elite level of

concierge services for the discriminating boat owner. Today, Boatworks Yacht Management employs an experienced staff at 13 local marinas and Yacht clubs. We service a variety of boats that range in size from 18’ runabouts to 100 foot yachts and everything in between! Our clien-tele includes those local to Austin and those from the Dallas, Houston and San Antonio areas. Additionally, we have gained many clients from outside Texas representing those who leave their boat permanently on Lake Travis or Lake Austin, as part of their second home. Boating provides Allyn’s customers with the ultimate escape, an unparalleled sanctuary for relaxation. “What they desire is a trouble-free transition to the pleasures of the lake. And that’s precisely what Boatworks Yacht Management delivers to them,” explains Allyn. Our proactive approach based on exceeding our customers’ needs has served us well during the recent downturn in the economy. Our customers deserve value, and we continue to deliver a high level of personalized service that maintains a very valuable asset and assures that our customers continue to enjoy the level of lifestyle that remains very important to them.

Boatworks Yacht Management starts with the basics: washing and detailing the boat, checking levels of fluids and dock lines, and making sure the boat is charged and ready to be enjoyed by the owners. Beyond the basics, yachts today are routinely equipped with a series of very complex systems, from audio-visual equipment, navigational systems, to sensitive secu-rity systems and climate control units, along with power plants. Allyn and his team assume responsibility for making sure that these systems operate flawlessly and, when they don’t, he arranges for all necessary service requirements.

In addition, Boatworks offers a variety of concierge services, including stocking the boat with wine, beer, sodas and snacks. Allyn occasionally will serve as captain, driving the boat if the owner wants to be completely free to entertain guests!

Boatworks Yacht Management also has relationships with several boat dealerships, includ-ing Sail & Ski and Eriksen Marine. Boatworks Yacht Management is charged with cleaning and checking systems in conjunction with dealership technicians and often provides a seamless transition for the owners and their new boats.

Allyn raced sailboats competitively throughout the five-state area, including off-shore rac-ing for the last 20 years, so his business builds on his own love of boating as well as that of his sons, AJ and Robert. We are proud of our unparalleled service as the longest operating Yacht Management company in the state of Texas. “I am fortunate to work in a business that allows me to share my passion for the water and boats with my customers each and every day.”

A n article by Jordan Rau in the April 14th edition of the Washington Post took note of preliminary efforts by the govern-ment to enact a complex, little-known provision of the 2010 health

care law that involves rewarding doctors who provide quality care at a lower cost to Medicare by paying them more while cutting payments to physicians who cost Medicare more without achieving better results. The correlation between cost and quality is critical to the effort to curtail spending and to keep Medicare solvent. According to Rau, “Efforts have begun to change the way Medicare pays hospitals, doctors and other providers who agree to work together in new alliances known as ‘accountable care organizations.’ This fall the federal health program for 47 million seniors and disabled people also is adjusting hospital payments based on quality of care, and it plans to take cost into account as early as next year.”

The interrelationship between quality and cost of care is incredibly com-plicated. According to Dr. Donald Berwick, former administrator of the fed-eral centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, implementation could lead to “levels of gaming and misunderstanding and incorrect signals to physi-cians that might not be best for everyone.” No patient presents for treatment without a complicated history of previous care from other providers. A physi-cian or a hospital may be victimized if previous providers of care did not take the right preventive steps to avoid more expensive treatments down the road. And there is the potential hazard that paying bonuses to those who use fewer medical resources may lead to decisions to avoid patients with expensive-to-treat medical conditions.

As the nation’s biggest insurer, Medicare wields extraordinary clout, and any effort to shift money from “high-cost” physicians to “low-cost” physicians would be a “game-changer,” according to Anders Gilberg, senior vice-presi-dent of the Medical Group Management Association that represents doctors’ groups. Getting physician and public support for this sort of cost manage-ment contained in the 2010 health care law may be challenging. And the fate of the health care law itself is still uncertain and awaits the decision of the Supreme Court. The complexities of health care in America are daunting. One

thing we know. We are beneficiaries or victims of our medical neigh-borhood. And the medi-cal neighborhood in the greater Lakeway/Lake Travis area just received a first class upgrade with the opening of the Lakeway Regional Medical Center.

I f the crowd of physicians and investors were all smiles, they had good reason to be. Momentum had been building all spring for the landmark opening of the Lakeway Regional Medical Center, which officially opened its door on April 16, 2012. Shortly before that, on March

31, physicians, staff and investors celebrated with local Lakeway officials and dignitaries. Only two short years ago, on March 17, 2010, Sam DeMaio, a key member of the founding team,

got a call from HUD, approving the application for the HUD financing package, the 242 Program, that secured the federal government as guarantor of the note. Less than three months before that, HUD, paralyzed by the uncertainties of health care reform, then winding its way through Congress, had initially rejected the application to guarantee the loan. Now, a little more than two years and one month after the 2010 St. Patrick’s day approval call to Sam DeMaio, the Lakeway Regional Medical Center is open to care for patients.

In remarks he made to the crowd, CEO David Kreye said, “We are honored to be here and to be able to provide care for this community.” LRMC has 220

full-time employees, and Kreye has been impressed by the caliber of staff that has been hired. Additionally, the numbers of physicians who have applied for hospital privileges have greatly exceeded expectations.

During the three-month lifetime of this issue, from May until mid-August, we may very well see the first child born at the LRMC, and we may hear of the first life saved by the interventions of its physicians and staff.

T he home furnishings market is diverse and highly fragmented and exhibits trends that vary widely between retail-ers with different profiles. There is nothing monolithic about

the market or its customers. While one of the largest furniture chains in Texas, The RoomStore, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December and will close 14 stores across the Lone Star State, including two in Austin, Lakeway’s family-owned EMBELLISH experienced steady growth in 2011 and will expand its showroom, adding 1,100 sq. ft. of show floor and space for a design center. Local, family-owned stores have been key players in the industry, and Embellish has used its strengths strategically to capture customers and market share.

Owners Mike and Sherri Vikesland understand that their decision to offer atypical concierge services that include merchandise trials in the home and free deliveries and installations contributes a great deal to their suc-cess. Mike spends hours hanging artwork and mirrors, positioning heavy furniture and installing hard window treatments. As he explains, “We love doing this for our customers. It gives us a lot of pleasure seeing our mer-chandise well-presented and accessorized in the home, and these are ser-vices our customers depend on.” “People are surprised to learn that we offer a large selection of cellular shades, motorized solar shades, woven woods

and shutters, very competitively priced,” Mike continues. “We are a premier Graber dealer and can offer extremely quick turnarounds and great pricing.”

Traditionally, designers charge for their services per hour, but retail income from hundreds of lines of furniture and acces-sories allows EMBELLISH to offer Sherri’s design services on a complimentary basis. Knowing that there is no tab running is an enormous benefit for a customer who wants a change but who might not even know where to begin. With the pressure off, customers can relax and let Sherri guide them expertly through the library of choices currently available in home design.

Versatility, diversity and value define the design profile at EMBELLISH. “We go to four markets a year, and we have the lines we need to satisfy any purpose, so we can create interiors across a broad spectrum, from casual contemporary to hill country contemporary to rustic Tuscan or transitional combinations,” Mike confides. “We don’t have one look,” Sherri agrees, “and that’s because our work reflects the preferences of the family. It’s not about us…it’s about listening carefully to figure out exactly what would best reflect their lifestyle and their tastes. I want people to say, ‘Oh, your house is beautiful and it looks like you! It fits you!’”

“Value is a paramount goal as we evaluate our ordering and our pric-ing,” explains Mike. “Our merchandise has got to have great value, or we stay away from it, and we pride ourselves on the fact that we offer the most design for the dollar.” This extraordinary focus on customer satisfaction has resulted in a healthy level of repeat business and referrals. “This com-munity has been extremely loyal to us, and we appreciate the fact that our customers tend to shop locally and they always check us first,” Sherri says.

The Vikeslands are excited for the future of the area and for the future of EMBELLISH.

750. The Foundation will use the $178,000 raised for scholarships for deserving high school seniors and grants to educators for instructional materials and programs that expand learning opportunities. Because the Foundation is a private nonprofit, the funds it donates to the students, staff and faculty of the district are exempt from the current system of recapture by the state. According to the Texas Education Code, property-wealthy districts are required to give up a substantial portion of their local revenue to the state for distribution to less wealthy districts.

Claiming the current school funding system violates provisions of the Texas Constitution, the school board for Lake Travis Independent School District (LTISD) has joined more than 80 other property-wealthy districts in a legal effort to overturn the current financing system. The unanimous vote occurred during a regular meeting of the Board held February 23 at the District’s Educational Development Center.

The Board’s action authorizes LTISD staff to engage the services of Haynes and Boone, LLP, who on behalf of the Calhoun County Independent School District filed suit against the state on December 9, 2011 (Calhoun County ISD et al vs. Robert Scott). The firm represents one of five current law-suits on school finance filed against the state. According to Texas Lone Star magazine, a publication of the Texas Association of School Boards, more than 540 school districts repre-senting about two-thirds of Texas schoolchil-dren have filed suit seeking to overturn the current system.

The Calhoun County plaintiffs are asso-ciated with the Texas School Coalition, an organization of revenue-contributing school districts which include Eanes, Highland Park, Alamo Heights and others. The plaintiffs con-tend the state’s current finance model fails to provide schools with sufficient funding to meet state educational standards and that the system has become a statewide property tax.

“As a result of the most recent Legislative session and based on current state funding formulas, LTISD will lose approximately $8 million over the next biennium (2011-2012 and 2012-13 school years),” said Dr. Brad Lancaster, LTISD Superintendent of Schools. “Consequently, we have grave concerns regarding our ability to protect the interests of our students and the Lake Travis community in the coming years.”

According to the Texas Education Code, property-wealthy districts must contribute a portion of their local revenue to the state for distribution to less wealthy districts. The current system of wealth equalization is often referred to as ‘recap-ture,’ or Robin Hood. Since 1994-1995, LTISD has sent the state over $257 million in recapture payments. Plaintiffs in the Texas School Coalition lawsuit hope to secure a perma-nent injunction that would prohibit the state from distribut-ing money under the current financing system.

“Even with the cuts in funding we’ve already absorbed, it is important to know that through frugal planning and cost-saving measures, we did not eliminate a single staff member or teacher position—and perhaps more importantly—no student programs were eliminated,” added Dr. Lancaster. “However, if the system goes unfixed, it will only be a matter of time before school districts like ours no longer have the funds or the discretion to provide the current level of pro-grams and services that our students deserve.”

Earlier this year, the Travis County District Court assigned the four lawsuits to Judge John K. Dietz of the 250th District Court. LTISD’s is expected to incur $15,000 for expenses associated with the lawsuit.

Rodney and Debbie Gamble were inspired to establish Hospice of the Hills in Bee Cave because of the impact of their own personal experience with hospice care for their own family. The hospice group that cared for Debbie’s mother provided outstanding service, quality care and compassion not only for Debbie’s mother but also for the rest of the family. The comfort they offered filled those final days with a sense of serenity, and Rodney

and Debbie were grateful for the exceptional care they received. Four years later, Rodney’s mother became gravely ill and needed hospice care as well. Unfortunately, the experience the Gambles confronted with this agency was nightmarish. The group was disorganized and some-

times didn’t show up for appointments. Worse yet, some staff members were disrespectful and insensitive to Rodney’s mother and to the family. Stress levels skyrocketed, complicating the already difficult grieving pro-cess, and Debbie and Rodney ultimately changed agencies. Fortunately, the new agency provided the same sort of exceptional care as the group that cared for Debbie’s mother, helping the family move beyond the negative experience they faced with the first agency.

After considerable soul-searching and reflection about their hospice experiences, Debbie and Rodney decided to open their own hospice agency in Bee Cave. “We believe no one should have to endure the unnecessary stress we once did, especially during such a critical and emotional time,” says Debbie. “We have put together a wonderful team with a wealth of ability and experience. Our commitment is to provide the highest level of hospice care with compassion, dignity and grace. The end-of-life journey our loved ones take should be one of peace and comfort, and you should have the peace of mind that your loved one received the very best care. We are committed to providing this comfort and care with the highest level of ethical standards and impeccable integrity using a comprehensive and competent team approach,” adds Rodney.

Hospice of the Hills is fully licensed and adheres to all state and federal regulations. The initial site survey has just been completed, and Hospice of the Hills is now accredited with the Joint Commission for Home Care Accreditation. This accreditation sets Hospice of the Hills apart from other providers of hospice care as it establishes Hospice of the Hills as a provider at a higher level of required standard of care.

gLeAM WhiTening

Four years ago, Kyle Leinart signed up for a teeth whitening service from a company in Dallas that claimed to offer a treatment that was quick, easy, safe, affordable and very effective. He was so impressed by the results that he immediately decided to investigate the business model for this service. Today, he and Alexandria Oliver are co-owners of GLEAM WHITENING in the BODHI YOGA WELLNESS CENTER at the Shops at the Galleria.

Porcelain veneers remain the “Cadillac” treatment in teeth whitening. This treatment, performed by cosmetic dentists, involves the bonding of a wafer thin shell of porcelain to the front of the tooth surface. The treatment preference of the stars, the procedure is expensive, costing many thousands of dollars. At the other end of the spectrum are a number of whitening materials such as toothpastes, rinses and strips that can be purchased over the counter and applied at home. These are inexpensive but not especially effective. In between these two extremes is ZOOM whitening, a treatment created by Philips that involves the application by a dentist of a very strong hydrogen peroxide to the surface of the teeth that is then light-accelerated to whiten teeth. ZOOM whitening usually costs between $400 - $600.

GLEAM WHITENING, like ZOOM, also uses a very concentrated, spe-cially formulated peroxide gel but the application, which is performed by the customer under the instruction and supervision of certified GLEAM associates, is considered a cosmetic procedure and does not require the services of a dentist. Thus GLEAM WHITENING offers substantial savings over ZOOM whitening. Once the gel is applied, a powerful LED blue light activates the whitening process for sessions that last 15 minutes each. When the session is over, the customer rinses and can then reapply for another 15

minute session. !5, 30, and 45 minute sessions are available, depending on which service the customer selects. Repeated treatments increase the whit-ening achieved. “Typically, teeth will be from two to eight shades whiter after the 30 minute session and from four to eight shades whiter after the 45 minute sessions,” according to Kyle. Staining and discolor-

ations vary, depending on the habits of the individual and how much coffee, tea and wine they drink and whether or not they are smokers. The pro-cedure actually lifts stains from the teeth. Because the hydrogen peroxide penetrates the enamel, it leaves the teeth very porous for 24 hours after the procedure. During this period, customers should avoid exposing the teeth to any staining agents. Again, depending on individual habits, results will last between six months to two years. There is even a take home “pen” that allows customers to touch up minor discolorations between treatments.

“Due the ease of the procedure and the dramatic results, the level of customer satisfaction with the service has been huge,” notes Alexandria.

reALTy AuSTinCompany owners Jonathan and Yvette Boatwright are excited to expand their presence in the Lake Travis market by opening an office in the heart of Lakeway at the corner of 620 and Lohmans Crossing. The new location, set to open it’s doors in June, will be Realty Austin’s third location.

Jonathan and Yvette Boatwright

Jonathan’s background in technology and Yvette’s background in real estate and education combined to create the perfect formula for building a successful real estate company. Since opening in 2004, Realty Austin has rapidly grown to become the #3 real estate brokerage in Austin and the #2 real estate brokerage in the south Lake Travis market.

Yvette Boatwright, Broker/Owner of Realty Austin said it best, “With such a strong presence in the Lake South market, we wanted to open an office that would be convenient for our agents and their clients. We believe it is important for our company and our agents to get involved in the Lakeway community, so we are focused on hiring agents who want to roll up their sleeves and make a difference.”

Lakeway resident and longtime Realtor Jolene Weinstein was hand-picked and recruited to serve as Realty Austin’s Lake Travis Office Manager. “I was thrilled when I got invited to work for Realty Austin. Their reputa-tion for excellence precedes itself since they only hire the best in our indus-try. This is only one of many reasons they are the fastest growing real estate company in Austin.”

Realty Austin is already home to several well established Lakeway agents; Todd Grossman, Tommy Cokins, Sherry Ellenbogen, Charla Housson and Michelle Jones. Todd Grossman was recognized by the Austin Business Journal as the #2 Residential REALTOR® in the Austin area in 2011, and is a member of 2012 Austin Elite 25. Tommy Cokins, is a 30 year Lake Travis resident, and has been a top producer in the area since 1993. Realty Austin is thoughtfully assembling a high caliber team powered by some of the best and brightest agents in the Lakeway area.

revivALWhat do quirky plants, linen-tufted sofas and century-old French doors have in common? Aside from filling up the boards on your Pinterest page, all of these can be found at ReVivAL, Lake Travis’s Home marketplace.

ReViVAL, the home decor extravaganza, “curated” by David and Tara Camp, showcases their passion for uncommon goods. “We love to be on the hunt for the unusual and to invent new and exciting ways to use com-mon objects” says Tara. Those who are discriminating about the things they surround themselves with will appreciate what David and Tara call “The ReVivAL Experience.”

Located just west of the Galleria Mall on Highway 71, Revival is housed within two main buildings and spills onto the Camp’s 2.4 acre plot of land. Inside is a mix of eclectic home furnishings, upholstery, statement furniture pieces and fun vintage finds that add instant character to any home. “We have these amazing lamps crafted from century-old architectural pieces that are one-of-a-kind” says David. “Taking something of quality and resur-recting it into something relevant for today’s modern home is true Revival.”

A recently added succulent garden grows just outside the main build-ing. “Succulents are drought tolerant and easy care plants” shares Tara, “…perfect for our area. They are curious plants as well, truly beautiful with interesting shapes and growth patterns. Every home must find a way to incorporate these into their design!” Beyond the succulent garden is the unique Revival collection of architectural doors, iron, barn-wood from the mid-west and salvaged pieces from the past. “The diversity of our selection allows us to help homeowners find the perfect architectural piece, whether it’s a centuries-old, reclaimed French door that makes a statement in the home’s entry or a vintage, hand-forged iron gate to be used in the garden.” David continues, “This is something we are helping homeowners do more and more…we love to brainstorm about creative ways to add something with age and quality to a home’s architecture, thereby increasing interest.”

Yet another building (which is really an old barn from a feed store from yesteryear), houses an ever-changing abundance of interesting finds unearthed by local pickers (the term used to describe those who rummage properties and old barns for rusty treasure)!

David and Tara offer upholstery services and have a great selection of home lighting and furniture pieces, with the ability to locate just the right piece for customers through their extensive catalogue ordering options. “Revival is a cradle-to-grave home marketplace,” David shares. “It’s a great place to check out before you even begin the building process.”

A t the 6th annual fundraiser for the Bob Mayberry Foundation, held at the La Paloma Event Center in early April, friends showed up with “boots

on the ground,” ready to do what needs to be done to raise funds for lung cancer research at the MD Anderson Cancer Center and, specifically, to support the pioneering work of Dr. Edward Kim and his associates on tumor biomarker analysis. These analy-ses, based on the specific characteristics of the tissue biomarker profiles for each patient, determine which clinical trials will offer the best benefit. After Bob Mayberry, a non-smoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer, Diane Judah Mayberry watched helplessly as the initial treatments prescribed for him were not only ineffective but made his condition worse. Her own exhaus-tive research on the disease led her to Dr. Edward Kim at MD Anderson who provided a series of treatments that gave Bob and Diane five more years together.

On behalf of the Bob Mayberry Foundation, Pam Mayberry Solly awarded the 2nd annual college scholarship to Stacey Arnold, a senior at Lake Travis High School. Applicants are judged on an essay they submit about the experience of living with a family member who has lung cancer or who has died from lung cancer. Stacey spoke eloquently about her grandfather who lost his struggle with lung cancer.

Diane continues her fight against lung cancer not only in Bob’s memory but also to reach out on behalf of others who suffer. She is indebted to a group of passionate volun-teers who have worked tirelessly to support the work of the Bob Mayberry Foundation. of Beau Theriot, well-known interior designer, restaurateur and developer.Sponsorships, donations, tickets and a silent auction generated gross proceeds of

$43,359, with $35,290 in net proceeds after expenses. Funds raised will benefit spe-cial projects and equipment at Seton Shoal Creek Hospital. Seton Shoal Creek is the only hospital in the region that helps children, teens and adults on the road to mental health recovery. For more than 30 years, the 80-bed facility has provided much needed care through in- and out-patient programs using physical, occupational and artistic activities during individual and group therapy sessions.

Alan Isaacson, VP and Chief Operating Officer of Seton Shoal Creek Hospital, expressed appre-ciation on behalf of the staff, the patients and their families for the long-term support offered by the Lakeway community to Seton Shoal Creek Hospital. A well-heeled group of distinguished Austinites won applause from friends and fam-ily as they showcased fashions by a variety of designers featured at Saks Fifth Avenue in the 5th annual Fashion for Compassion, presented by Mercedes-Benz of Austin. Funding from

the event benefits the Austin Children’s Shelter and supports programs and services for children and youth who have experienced abuse and neglect or are at extreme risk. The closed-door event included tastings from select restaurants and catering companies, great music, a live auction and private shop-ping. But the catwalk appearances of Austin’s select provided the highlight of the evening.

“We are so pleased with our fifth annual Fashion for Compassion results and the incredible sup-port we had this year!,” said Carmine Salvucci, chief development officer for the Austin Children’s Shelter. “We celebrated with a record-breaking 400 people, including 62 prominent local family mod-els! And thanks to the generous support of Mercedes-Benz of Austin, Saks Fifth Avenue, the Cain Foundation and so many others, we more than doubled our sponsorships and ticket sales this year! This will provide critical support for the physical, mental health and other needs of the abused and neglected children in our care.”

B oat candy Owner Kenda Beall and Kendra Lee worked closely with the Piazza family to organize and sponsor a fashion show at Rocco’s Grill to benefit local charity, LTlov, The Lake Travis Labor of Love. The runway should certainly have erupted in

flames from exposure to Boat Candy’s sizzling hot models in bikinis designed to enflame, and firefighters from LTFR and C-Bar, modeling swimwear by Rip Curl, did their bit to stoke the fire. No complaints about the heat were heard from the enthusiastic audience, however. Models from Susie D’s, The PJ Shop and Cristiani’s also walked down the runway showing off their latest looks.

The South Shore of Lake Travis is generally seen as a community of considerable affluence. While this is true, there are also serious pockets of poverty that exist within its boundaries. It was the hope of assisting Lake Travis families struggling with daunt-ing socio-economic disadvantages that inspired Michelle Zogas, along with other founding members, to establish LTlov in October 2007.

LTlov is a proud supporter of Green Santa Lake Travis, Lake Travis Crisis Ministries, Helping Hand Crisis Ministries of Spicewood, Peaceful Dreams, Lake Travis Fire Rescue, Partners in Hope, Austin School for the Visual and Performing Arts, Dream a Dream Therapeutic Horsemanship, the Lake Travis Lunch Truck, the Lake Travis Independent School District and other worthy causes.

Sponsors Boat Candy and Rocco’s Grill presented LTlov with a check for $5,000. Additional personal donations from guests brought the total to $5,130. The donation from this dedicated fundraiser will be used to establish a scholarship fund for young women in the Teen Parenting and Pregnancy Program at Lake Travis High School. The primary goal is to empower these young mothers to graduate from high school. Additionally, the fund will set aside a certain percentage that will be used exclusively to enable them to pursue secondary education opportunities.

I f the cast of characters on this page looks suspiciously familiar, it may be because you read about the infamous, women-only, Lakeway Mardi Gras party in our Summer 2011 issue. Glenda Foreman and Pat Doucet, graduates of Thomas Jefferson High School in Port Arthur, Texas, intro-

duced this special Mardi Gras celebration in 2003. 10 hostesses sponsored this year’s party for over 150 guests who drank toasts to Fat Tuesday, danced to the tunes of Jean-Pierre and The Zydeco Angels, ate étoufée and pecan pie, danced some more, and demanded to hear the annual collection of ribald South Louisiana jokes, flawlessly delivered by someone who shall not be named here!

A t its annual Spring Luncheon at the Hyatt Regency, the Ballet Austin Guild honored this year’s selection of outstanding volunteers for their work with the nonprofit organizations they serve. The Guild chose the theme

Passion, Fashion and Philanthropy for this year’s event, and the passions that inspire such remarkable service to others were clearly evident in the filmed introductions of the honorees.

Ballet Austin’s Executive Director Cookie Ruiz spoke eloquently about the nine year involvement in human rights work led by Artistic Director Stephen Mills through Light/The Holocaust & Humanity Project. “In fact,” she said, “we are currently engaged

in public dialogue across our city through a powerful collaboration with 48 Community Partners from arts, education and human rights organizations…all focused on the respon-sibility and the opportunity each of us has to ensure the protection of individual human rights for all of our citizens against bigotry and hate. In the course of this work we have had the great honor of meeting Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel in 2005 and seeing him again just two weeks ago. Professor Wiesel reminded us that the opposite of love is not hate. It is indifference…Indifference is the Enemy. So let’s check ourselves on this for a moment. We are aware of issues of hunger, homelessness, growing poverty among the youngest and old-est in our community, the need for access to health care for all, challenges facing education, the need for affordable housing, the protection of our water supply and environment. So many issues face us.”

“The concept of refusing to accept the indifference around us continues to motivate the work we do at Ballet Austin. Perhaps it is a city without passion that slips most easily into a climate of indifference. So as we continue the process of building a collaborative nonprofit community of professionals and volunteers, work-ing passionately together across platforms of focus…social service, education, the arts…we celebrate that passion today. Today we are filled with powerful examples of these amazing Honorees…volunteers who refuse each day to slip into the dan-gers of indifference.”

The audience was cleared moved by the individual stories of the hon-orees and the by inspired remarks of Ballet Austin’s Executive Director. What better way to add to the mood than with a presentation of inspired fashions by Estilo?

S tudents from Westlake High School, the University of Texas and Baylor University continued efforts to raise awareness about the serious issue of teen dating violence and digital abuse, like sexting

and constant text messaging, by holding two fundraisers for the National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline, loveisrespect, based in Austin.

The Four Seasons Austin hosted a day of events, including an afternoon dessert and fashion show and a dinner fashion show with celebrity models and a live auction, as part of the 5th Annual Fashion Show and Gala benefiting the National Dating Abuse Helpline. Travis County Sheriff Greg

Hamilton, Edith Royal (wife of beloved Longhorn football coach Darrell Royal), Linda McCaul (wife of Congressman Michael McCaul) and Rachel McCoy (wife of former UT quarterback and current Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy) were among the celebrity models and were joined by many teen models on the runway.

Rachel McCoy attended Baylor University where she ran track and earned a degree in Public Relations. The McCoys now spend most of their year in Cleveland but still call Austin home. Rachel, who leads the Cleveland Brown’s Women’s Organization, delivered a special mes-sage. David Coleman, known as the Dating Doctor, was also a featured speaker.

Austin lobbyist Buddy Jones and his wife Ginny were honored by the National Dating Abuse Helpline with the 2nd Annual LifeStyle Award for their outstanding service to the community. The award exemplifies an individual or couple who, through an outward reflection of their heart and soul, demonstrates a commitment to inspiring healthy and positive relationships through strength of character, inspirational leadership and service to others.

“A n evening in Paris” was the theme for this year’s spring dance, held by the Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway in the Vistas Glass Ballroom at the Lakeway

Resort and Spa. Cocktails near “La Tour Eiffel” set the stage for a memorable evening that included dinner and dancing to “Oldies but Goodies” by The Fabs. Social Chairs Sharon Gilmore and Linda Kephart and their committee of volunteers need to take a bow for their efforts. As they say in Paris, “C’était SUPER!”

Rogers and Hammerstein!

I f the sing alongs get much better, they’ll have to move their productions to the Long Center! The show was pure delight! In terms of material, it just doesn’t get much better than Rogers and Hammerstein. It is so true that a tune can transport

you back in time…decades later… to the period in your past when you first fell in love with it. 25 years ago, my kids watched the video of The Sound of Music at least once every two weeks. (It alternated with Annie.) I haven’t heard that music since. So the Sing Alongs took me back to those joyful days when my house was full of the sound of music, á la Rogers and Hammerstein. The Sing Alongs have entirely too much fun doing what they do. Makes me wish I could sing!
