A man was found dead on the Ltrain tracks at the First Avenuestation early during yesterdaymorning’s rush-hour commute.

Police were investigatingwhether he was hit by a train.

The incident comes on theheels of the death of Queensman Ki-Suk Han last Monday, who was reportedly pushed in-to the tracks and then hit by aQ train at 49th Street after aplatform altercation.

According to the MTA, thenumber of people hit by trainsincreased 15 percent in 2011. In2010, 128 people had beenstruck by subway trains, and147 were hit in 2011, accordingto the MTA. As of April of thisyear, the most recent data theMTA could provide, 49 peoplehad been struck by trains.

In yesterday’s incident, theNYPD reported a 911 call it re-ceived at 7:10 a.m. detailing aman struck by a train. MTAspokesman Kevin Ortiz said itwas unclear whether the manhad been hit by the train.

The victim was a white malewho was declared dead on ar-rival, the NYPD reported.

At that rush-hour time, the Ltrain runs every four to six min-utes, Ortiz said.

The NYPD is conducting aninvestigation, but at this time itdoes not suspect criminal activ-

ity was involved. The man didnot have any identification onhim, which a law enforcementsource said usually may indi-cate a suicide.

After Han was crushed by atrain last week, Naeem Davis,30, was arraigned two days lat-er and charged with second de-gree murder.

You might think those accumu-lated hours waiting for the sub-way and the stress of elbowingyour way through crowdswould take years off of your life— but you would be wrong.

Mayor Michael Bloombergsaid yesterday that the life ex-pectancy for New Yorkers is at arecord high — locals shouldlive until nearly 81 years.

This is 2.2 years higher thanthe national average of 78.7years, he and Health Commis-sioner Dr. Thomas Farley an-nounced.

Those most benefiting arethe youngest — the babies bornin 2010 are the ones given the

record estimate of 80.9 years. But people at ages 20 and 30

don’t receive an estimate thatstretches into the 80s. Accord-ing to the Health Department, life expectancy at 20 was 61.6years; it was 51.9 years at 30.

The mayor said that his pas-sionately pushed health inter-ventions, like blocking smok-ing and adding HIV testing, contributed to the increase.

“New York City is increas-ingly a healthy place in whichto live, work and raise a family,"Farley said.

Twitter adds photo tools to challenge InstagramTwitter unveiled tools to adjustthe color, size and style of pho-tos uploaded via applicationsfor Apple iPhones and Androidphones, as the social-media siteadds features to compete withFacebook’s Instagram.

The photo filters, developedin partnershipwith software

maker Aviary Inc.,are part of an up-

date to the mobileapps made available yesterday,San Francisco-based Twittersaid in a blog post.

Twitter is letting users addpictures, video and audio totheir postings as it steps upcompetition with Facebook, which bought photo-sharingservice Instagram earlier thisyear. Last week, Instagram dis-abled a feature called TwitterCards for showcasing photosand other media. The movewas seen as a step that better

prepares Instagram for generat-ing revenue from its own serv-ices by driving traffic to its web-site.

Twitter’s updated photo-en-hancing apps will probably

bring more exposure to Aviary,a New York-based startup withbacking from Amazon.com Inc.founder Jeff Bezos and LinkedInCorp. co-founder Reid Hoff-man. BLOOMBERG

Zuckerberg sawthe importanceFacebook CEO MarkZuckerberg similarly ar-gued for the importance

of photo-sharingwhen heshockedSiliconValley ear-lier thisyear by

making an offer to Insta-gram valued at the timeat $1 billion.

Twitter’s new photoeffects will be incorporat-ed as part of an update tothe Twitter’s iPhone andAndroid apps, availablebeginning Monday, thecompany said. REUTERS

Rich-case scenario:The $300,000iPhone case The price of the world’smost expensive iPhone 5case is $300,000. That’s forthe unique “Lotus” (phonenot included) unveiled inNovember by Mischa Barton.

Sublime or ridiculous, the “Lotus” — crafted fromrose gold, pink and white di-amonds and the finest Ital-ian leather — sits majestical-ly at the top of an industry.Mike Morgan, senior analystfor mobile devices at ABI re-search, believes that “it’splausible to say that $600million worth of iPhone cas-

es for Q4 will be sold global-ly because they’re attachedto the biggest device magneton the planet.”

The reason behind thismarket’s growth is obvious:“Smartphones are takingover from feature phonesand have a higher attachrate,” says Morgan.

That’s why owners aremore willing to invest in ac-cessorizing and personaliz-ing their device, with Mischabeing the latest celebrity tojoin the fashionable tech-cessories fold, whichincludes Versace, Mulberry,Marc by Marc Jacobs andeven the traditional station-ers Smythson, to rattle off afew. “This is the day when Michi-gan freed its workers,” Repre-sentative Lisa PosthumusLyons, an Alto Republican, saidtoday during debate on twobills, one for public employeesand another for private ones.

If Republican Governor RickSnyder signs the so-calledRight-to-Work measures aspromised, Michigan would be-come the 24th state to enact

such legislation, and the sec-ond this year after Indiana. Thechange would be a practicaland symbolic rout in a strong-hold of organized labor in theU.S., and opponents said it pre-saged political warfare.

“There will be blood,” Repre-sentative Douglas Geiss, a De-mocrat from Taylor, said in de-bate.

‘Civil war’Bill Bagwell, a 55-year-old UAWmember from Westland, saidthe measure would create fric-tion at his General Motors plantin Ypsilanti. Members who payunion dues would detest those

who enjoy the benefits of thecontract but don’t contribute,he said.

“It’ll create civil war,” Bagwellsaid.

Officials spent days gearingup for crowds brought out bythe legislature’s sudden action

Boehner standsfirm but hopeful on ‘fiscal cliff’ WASHINGTON. House of Repre-sentatives Speaker JohnBoehner offered no concretesigns of progress yesterday on

the “fiscalcliff” talks butsaid heremainedhopeful thatboth sideswould reach

an agreement by the end-of-year deadline.

Amid signs that the WhiteHouse and Boehner’s officeare making headway in thetalks, Boehner repeated hisnow-familiar call for PresidentBarack Obama to offer a newproposal to avert theautomatic steep tax hikes andspending cuts set for the endof the year unless Congressintervenes.

“I’m an optimist. I’m hope-

ful we can reach anagreement,” Boehner said onthe House floor.

While Boehner demandedmore specific spending cutsfrom Obama, White Housespokesman Jay Carney saidthe administration hadsubmitted extensive propos-als to reduce spending but Re-publicans had not offeredspecifics on increasingrevenues.

“There is a deal out therethat’s possible,” Carney toldreporters. It could include re-duced spending, morerevenues and tax reform aslong as Republicans acceptedhigher tax rates on thewealthiest Americans, he said.

“We do believe the param-eters of a compromise arepretty clear,” Carney said.

The pace of staff-level talkshas quickened since Boehnermet on Sunday with Obama atthe White House in a meetingthat the Republican describedas “nice” and “cordial.”

Yahoo rolled out new versionsof its popular Web e-mail onTuesday, the first major prod-uct makeover since Chief Exec-utive Marissa Mayer took thehelm of the struggling Internetcompany five months ago.

Yahoo released new versionsof its Yahoo Mail product forsmartphones and tablets — inkeeping with Mayer’s focus onmobile devices — and a re-vamped version of its Web-based mail product for PC usersthat cuts out ancillary featuresand that the company said de-livers faster performance.

Yahoo is the No. 1 Web e-mail product in the UnitedStates and No. 3 worldwide, be-hind Google’s Gmail and Mi-crosoft’s Hotmail, according tocomScore.

But the number of uniqueusers of Yahoo e-mail declined16 percent in November from ayear earlier in the United Statesand 7 percent worldwide, ac-cording to comScore.

Analysts say the declineowes partly to a younger gener-ation of Internet users who pre-fer to communicate with textmessages on their phones

rather than e-mail.Mayer, a former Google ex-

ecutive who is widely admiredin Silicon Valley for her Web-product savvy, is moving to re-vitalize Yahoo’s various Webproducts and reverse years ofdeclining revenue.

She has said her top priorityis to create a coherent mobilestrategy for Yahoo and that sheintends for at least half of thecompany’s technical workforceto be working on mobile prod-ucts.

As part of yesterday’s an-nouncement, Yahoo unveiledan update to its mobile emailapp for smartphones based onthe Android operating system,as well as Yahoo’s first stand-alone app for Apple’s iPhone.

Yahoo also released a ver-sion designed for tablets andPCs based on Microsoft’s newWindows 8 operating system.

Vivek Sharma, GeneralManager of Yahoo Mail & Mes-senger, said the group of newmobile apps was part of Ya-hoo’s goal of ensuring that itsproducts are available acrossall major mobile platforms.REUTERS

The stretchableelectronics industry is in itsinfancy, but devices that areable to flex withoutbreaking could revolutionizedevices from smartphonesand solar cells to medicalimplants.

Tips for Terrifi c Holiday Light Photography:

Photographing holiday lights can seem intimidating, but all you really need is a quality

point and shoot camera and a bit of insight as to how to ensure the decorations take center

stage:

Timing is Key: Some professionals recommend photographing outdoor decorative

lighting shortly BEFORE the sun sets. Try to be at your location and ready well in advance.

During the dusk period, you’ll fi nd a pleasant balance of diminishing ambient light

contrasting with the holiday lights, which means you’ll be able to include more objects in

the background.

Bring Your Tripod: Using a tripod is especially important when photographing holiday

lights. A tripod provides stability, something that is particularly critical with low-light

photography. It will also keep your image properly framed as the evening light transitions

from dusk to darkness. Long exposure images are vulnerable to camera shake, so avoid

handheld shooting if at all possible. If you don’t have a tripod, fi nd a nearby wall or fence to

provide additional support.

Tungsten Setting: Holiday lights use tungsten lighting so you’ll want to set your white

balance to tungsten as well. Using this setting will provide a nice contrast between the

background sky and the lights. With a point and shoot camera, many of today’s models

have a setting for nighttime shooting. Your fl ash may fi re because it is interpreting that you

have a subject that needs to be lit, but unless the decorations are only a few feet away, it

won’t make much difference. This leads us to our next tip…

Forget the Flash: For holiday lights, it’s best to let the decorations take center stage so

keep your fl ash off. A strong D-SLR fl ash can wash out the image and detract from the fi nal

result.

A Shot a Minute Sequence: Once you have everything set, begin taking a photograph

every minute or so. Your eyes may not register the gradual changes of the setting sun so

track the time with your watch or cell phone. Shoot once per minute or so over a 10-15

minute period. You’ll see the changes in evening lighting as you scroll though your shots.

Photographing holiday lights will not only help you experiment with low-light photography,

it can also be a great way to share your expertise with the younger photographers in your

life. If you have a child or young relative that loves to take pictures, why not bring that

budding photographer along? Think of it as a mini holiday photo safari!

Stewart is cool withgetting naked, OK?Kristen Stewart is sick and tiredof all the attention her nudescenes in “On the Road” aregetting. “I do hate also whenpeople go, ‘Oh wow, greatperformance. So brave,’” shetells the Huffington Post.“Because I’m naked? That’sannoying. But at the same time,if that’s what they’re focusingon, then ‘On the Road’ probablyisn’t for them anyway.” Stewart

“I went through writer’sblock — two months of beinguninspired. It was just weeksand weeks of going back intothe studio and trying to writesomething that means some-thing. ... I was afraid I’d neverbe able to write anything everagain,” says the singer.

Talking inyour sleep? There’s anapp for thatThe average person will spendabout a third of his or her lifeasleep. And while researcherscontinue to look for answers asto just why it is we sleep, a lotof questions still remain unan-swered. Why do we dream? What do dreams actuallymean? And why do we talk inour sleep?

As with most predicamentsthese days, there’s an app for it.

It’s called Sleep TalkRecorder and it records every-thing you say while you snooze. The app launched in Sweden in2010 and has racked up almost2 million downloads to date. The Sleep Talk Recorder hasmade its way to the UnitedStates and now the folks behindthe app are hoping to make adocumentary out of the storiesthat surface from its users.

“I was chatting with a friend... about a weird dream I hadjust had,” says Martin Lindau,co-founder of Mad In Sweden, the company behind the app.“We both thought, ‘Well, theremust be a way to use yourphone to record what you sayin your sleep.’”

The app only records

sounds — usually in short, five-second integrals — so there’sno blank recording. Once youwake up, you can listen to thesnippets you said during thenight and share them to themain feed for other users to see.

The main focus of the docu-mentary, Lindau says, is to cap-ture stories where the app hasinspired or helped someone. Hecites a recent case in New York.

“This man was having sleep-ing problems. Every night, hisdog ... would lick his face andwake him up,” he said.

Lindau says the man triedthe app and discovered thenext morning that he was theproblem. During the night, hemade a series of growl-likesnores — which is likely whatcaused his dog to wake him up.

“Those are the kind of sto-ries we’re curious to find.” Lin-dau says. The documentary isstill in its early phases, thoughLindau is hoping for a Decem-ber 2013 completion date.

Seasonal Affective Disorder: It’s the real dealTo some, it’s a myth; to

others, it’s an annualplight. Seasonal Affec-tive Disorder is not yet

fully understood — but as daysgrow shorter, sufferers reportsymptoms like less energy, sleepiness, increased appetiteand sadness. Metro asked psy-chologist Dr. Janis Anderson, the director of Boston’sBrigham and Women’s Hospi-tal’s Seasonal Affective Disor-ders Clinic, for some insight in-to this peculiar problem.

What is Seasonal Affective Disorder?Seasonal Affective Disorder is aform of major depression. Thetiming is different, but thepresentation is the same. Majordepression is depression lastinglonger than two weeks that in-terferes with normal life.Isn’t S.A.D. just a myth? We’ve seen brain scans andstudies that have shown thatSeasonal Affective Disorder fitsthe major depression profile. There are physiologicalchanges that are the same.

Does our vitamin D productionhave something to do with it?Some studies have looked intothat, and there’s some specula-tion. But there is no specific evi-dence. The evidence points todaylight hitting the retina, which in turn affects parts ofthe brain that respond to light, even in blind people. Mammals[use an] internal calendar.Do we know what causes it?

There were studies done inAlaska and Siberia that com-pared natives who still lived atraditional life with those wholed modern city lives. The ratesof S.A.D. were higher in thepeople who lived modern lives. We don’t know why. It’s one ofthose intriguing mysteries. Is it preventable?Move to Hawaii! Really, it’s sen-sitive to geographical location. The further from the equator, the more incidences we see.How can it be treated? We see improved function withmore light exposure. Walkingin daylight without sunglasses, even if it’s cloudy, for 40 min-utes a day, helps — particularlyin the early morning hours.

Who gets S.A.D.more, men orwomen?“Women. We just don’tknow why. It’s true that ingeneral women have moredepression. But it’s certainlytrue of S.A.D.”

If you have checked one or more of the boxes, please do yourself a favor and call USA Vein Clinics.

Do Not Postpone TreatmentVaricose veins can start out as a seemingly small problem, but left untreated, can become much more serious. Complications of varicose veins may include ulcers. These may form on the skin near the affected veins, particularly near the ankles. They are caused by fluid build-up in the dysfunctional veins, and can be extremely painful.

Dysfunctional veins can also increase the risk of blood clots. Patients may experience a swelling in the

leg, which may indicate a blood clot. Left untreated, these clots can travel through the bloodstream and lodge near the heart or lungs, causing potentially life-threatening health problems.

“ When it comes to holiday eating,

you are in control.

PASS IT ON!”

This public service announcement is brought to you by Healthfirst Healthy Living, a community outreach and health education program designed to help New Yorkers get and stay healthy.

“It’s not easy staying lean-and-mean with all those high-calorie, high-fat foods that are

served during holiday meals.

“The secret is to remember that you are in control. You can eat just about anything as

long as you enjoy small portions and say ‘No’ to seconds. Also, remember that

alcohol is empty calories. Drink water or club soda instead. And when it comes to those

sweet desserts, take a taste, but don’t go crazy.

“Especially during the holiday season, I make it a point to eat healthy, exercise daily, and watch my blood sugar and cholesterol levels, weight and blood pressure. All it takes

is small lifestyle changes to bring a full-court press against diabetes, and help win the fight

What’s colorless, odorless and deadly?I know about fire safety, but howcan I prevent carbon monoxidepoisoning?

Approximately 200 peo-ple in the U.S. die andas many a 40,000 peo-ple seek medical atten-

tion every year for carbonmonoxide (CO) poisoning, alife-threatening condition thatresults from exposure to thecolorless, odorless carbonmonoxide gas. Carbon monox-ide is a product of burning or-ganic fuels (propane gas, kerosene, wood, oil, gasoline, etc.) in fireplaces, stoves, propane heaters, furnaces andautomobile or generator en-gines. The risk increases in win-ter and after power outages, aspeople try to warm their homesand discover (often too late)that they have a faulty furnaceor inadequate exhaust for afireplace, or when they improp-erly use a generator indoors.

Carbon monoxide blocksthe transport of oxygen in thebloodstream, leading to oxygen

deprivation for vital organs.Symptoms may include:headache, fatigue, lightheaded-ness, nausea, confusion, a rapidheartbeat and breathlessness.Symptoms can often be mistak-en for a flu-like illness, so recog-nizing carbon monoxide poi-soning is sometimes challeng-ing. Prolonged exposure athigh concentrations can resultin death if not detected andtreated promptly.

Prevention of carbonmonoxide poisoning is easy, and it’s the most importantmeans of avoiding the conse-quences. All levels of yourhome should have a plug-in COdetector/alarm with batterybackup. Detectors are availableat almost any hardware orhome supply store. A good wayto remember to change yourbatteries is to do so when youset your clocks for daylight sav-ings (this is when you should al-so change your smoke detectorbatteries). Every year, have anyheating systems — your fur-nace, hot water heater and

gas/oil/coal-burning appliances— as well as chimneys inspect-ed by a trained technician toensure adequate venting andexhaust. Don’t use any fuel-burning devices — propane orkerosene heaters, gasoline gen-erators or gas stoves — as asource of heat indoors, ever. Fi-nally, it may be tempting towarm up you car while it’s inthe garage on cold mornings, but even with the garage dooropen, CO from the exhaust canseep into your home.

If you suspect that you or afamily member may have beenexposed or have symptomsfrom CO poisoning, go to yournearest hospital emergency de-partment for evaluation andtreatment with oxygen therapyas soon as possible.

Organic labels don’talways impressStudy subjects: 215 students inpart one of the study and 156students in part twoLocation of study: U.S.Results: Researchers at CornellUniversity and the University ofMichigan did a two-part studyon the “halo effect” of organicfoods — the idea that an organ-ic food label makes a consumerthink the food is healthier thana food with a conventionallabel. They found that many par-ticipants deemed the food withthe organic label healthier, butalso expressed low expectationson whether it would taste good. The low taste expectations wereespecially prevalent among par-ticipants who didn’t have muchconcern about the environment. The second part of the studylooked at why people who didcare about the environmentmight view organic labels nega-tively.Significance: “The halo effecthinges on the values of the per-ceiver,” says Cornell researcherJonathon Schuldt. “It’s not the

case that you can label a foodorganic and expect that every-one will perceive it more posi-tively. Under certaincircumstances, ethical labelscould have an unintended back-fire effect.”

The rate ofmental health problems in cou-ples who adopted children wasalso half the rate of such prob-lems in couples without anykids.Significance: Interestingly, therates of mental illness were sim-ilar for couples who hadchildren of their own and thosewho did not have any children.

Sleeping pills havetie to pneumoniaStudy subjects: 5,000 primarycare patients diagnosed withpneumoniaLocation of study: U.K.Results: New researchpublished online in the journalThorax found thatBenzodiazepines, commonlyused as sleeping pills and seda-tives, could increase the risk ofcatching pneumonia and dyingfrom it, possibly from its effectson the immune system. Thedrug is also linked to a height-ened risk of infections anddeath from blood poisoning(sepsis). Significance: About 2 percentof the population in the U.K.and the U.S. have taken benzo-diazepines for 12 months ormore. Among the elderly, therate is 10 percent.

Significance: The degree ofone’s social support — alongwith older age, underlyingmedical conditions, genes, im-paired cognition anddepression — could be anothertool in predict the developmentof dementia in later life.

It has been my own per-sonal observation that whenthe central government isconfronted with a major na-tional security issue, it spas-modically reacts by increas-ing the size of the military— both head count and ma-terial. During thesespasmodic periods, person-nel are recruited who aremore susceptible to disabili-ties than the norm.

Jerusalem before the Israelis. This is according to Jewishscriptures. The Romans builtgreat cities out of Londonand Paris, and the Americaswere populated by nativepeople. The Palestinianshave been in the so-calledpromised land for about2,000 years. The Romans de-stroyed and sacked the sec-ond temple and built theColosseum with the templeloot. Emperor Titus exiledthe Israelis from Palestine inthe first century. The worldis what it is today, and theIsraelis cannot use a bookwritten by their ancestors tojustify removing the long-term residents of Palestinebecause their God promisedthem a territory occupied byCanaanites, which they hadto ethnic cleanse. Braylon Edwards probablydoesn’t think Jets manage-ment are “idiots” now.

The Jets yesterday broughtback the wide receiver, whoperhaps never should haveleft. Edwards signed a con-tract with his old team afterhe was claimed on waivers.

Edwards, a former first-round pick of the Browns, wastraded to the Jets in 2009 andplayed 28 regular-seasongames with the team. Edwardshad his second-best profes-sional season, with 53 catchesfor 904 yards and seven touch-downs with the Jets in 2010.But his contract was not re-newed and he has had injury-riddled seasons in San Francis-co and Seattle since. He wasreleased by the Seahawks onMonday.

“It feels great to be goinghome,” Edwards tweeted yes-terday after the news. “I’mback and it’s go time.”

The deal comes just a weekafter Edwards took to Twitterto rip apart the team. Edwardstweeted a message of supportfor Mark Sanchez after the Jetsbenched him in the secondhalf of their win over the Car-dinals.

“Don’t blame Sanchez. I

played there,” Edwards tweet-ed. “Blame the idiots callingshots. Mark is a beast and willprove it when given a properchance.”

Edwards later apologized tothe Jets’ front office for thecomments.

Head coach Rex Ryanpraised Edwards on Monday, but didn’t say the team was

looking to sign him.“You guys know what I’ve

always said about Braylon inthe past, so you know how Ifeel about him,” Ryan said.“But right now, I think we’lljust focus on the guys wehave.”

Playing with the enemyFormer Red Sox infielder Youkilis signs deal with Yankees, according to

reports Struggled last season, traded to Chicago Contract worth $12MKevin Youkilis has become thelastest to join a club that in-cludes Wade Boggs, JohnnyDamon and Roger Clemens.

Multiple reports last nightindicate Youkilis will sign aone-year deal with the Yan-kees, pending a physical. Thedeal will be worth $12 million.

The Yankees were left in alurch at third base when AlexRodriguez announced hewould need surgery on hiship, putting him out for fourto six months. Yankees gener-al manager Brian Cashmanpublicly stated at the winter

meetings in Nashville lastweek that he would not moveEduardo Nunez to third base,

meaning the team would lookat the free-agent market.

But after Eric Chavez, Ro-

driguez’s backup for the pasttwo seasons, signed with Ari-zona and Mark Reynolds andJeff Keppinger took their tal-ents elsewhere, the Yankeeshad few options.

Youkilis, 33, was a star forthe Red Sox from 2004 to2012, when his numbersslumped and he was traded tothe White Sox. He has a life-time average of .284 with a.384 on-base percentage, butbatted just .235 last season.

NYC’s #1 FREE DAILY30

Forget spending a ton ofmoney on fancy wrap-ping paper, ribbons andboxes. “It’s the silliest

thing in the world; you knowsomeone’s just going to tear itup and throw it away,” saysgreen lifestyle expert andcrafter Danny Seo. But don’t gethim wrong — Seo believes ingorgeous presentation. “I justthink there are so many thingsthat you can use that you al-ready have to wrap presentsand make them look reallypretty.” In his new book, “Upcy-cling Celebrations,” the “To-day” show contributor createsmore than 100 ingenious holi-day-themed projects out ofstuff that’s lying around (think:cheery garlands from packingpeanuts). We got him to teachus a few projects from his book.Start raiding your cabinetsnow.

Why are homemadedecorations more special? When someone asks, “Oh,where did you get these trim-mers?” the last thing you wantto say is Pottery Barn. You wantto have a story, like, “Oh, whenI was 8 years old I made thesewith my mother; we’ve had

them generation to genera-tion.” So what I was trying to dowith this book was to take theidea of making things by handand make it easy for peoplewho truly don’t have a lot ofskill. What’s a good starter project?During the holidays, everybodygives out gift cards; it’s an easygift, but it’s hard to wrap. WhatI do is I save Altoids tins andcover it in a really pretty paper.[see directions to the left]. Onceit’s done, throw some pepper-mint candies inside, place thegift card on top, tie it with a rib-bon and you’re done. Howdo you plan to decorateyour home for the holidays?I’m making a big newspaperwreath this year. You cut six orseven squares of newspaper outand then you put the squaresonto a wreath frame — whichare like $2 at a craft store. Thenyou zip-tie that bunch of news-paper onto the frame and takeyour hands and scrunch it; theybecome these newspaperrosettes. Once you do thewhole thing, you can create agiant wreath using newspapersyou already have, and the onlytools you need are a wreathframe, zip ties and scissors.

Make your ownholiday magic

Lifestyle expert Danny Seo shows us how to create cost-effective, eco-friendly and supercute decorations out of everyday items You don’t need art skills to make any of these good-for-the-Earth projects

‘Happy Holidays’bannerMake your own quirkyholiday banner to greet yourguests and spruce up a blankspace.

HOW-TO: Cut thick office-supply paper (like cardstock)into circles. With a hot-gluegun, attach dried-out pens, markers and broken pencilsto the front of each circle tospell out a letter. Repeat untilyour phrase is completed.Use a hole punch to maketwo holes at the top of eachcircle, and run yarn or stringthrough it to make thegarland.

Put your old lightbulbs to useand make these adorablehot-air balloon ornaments.

HOW-TO: Cut tissue paperinto small strips that willcover the outside of the bulb, from the base of the socketto the top of the bulb. Coverthe whole bulb in ModPodge glue and attach thetissue paper on top. Wait forit to dry slightly (about 10minutes; do other bulbs asyou wait) and then apply athin layer of more ModPodge on top to seal it in. Toget the striped appearance, use strips of identical tissuepaper and attach them oneat a time, alternating colors.Allow to dry completely. Tietwo pieces of string aroundthe socket tightly, and bringthem up along the sides ofthe bulb and knot at the top.Leave excess so you haveenough string to looparound the tree to hang it.Twist a champagne metalcage around the bottom tomake the “basket” for theballoon.

Altoids tin gift card casesForget envelopes: Savesome trees and useyour empty Altoids tinswhen giving gift cardsto your loved ones.

HOW-TO: You don’thave to cover the out-side of the tin with dec-orative paper, but ifyou don’t, you are sim-ply reusing an Altoidstin and not upcyclingit. If aesthetics matterto you, it’s easy to do:Spread craft glue onthe top of the Altoidstin and lay it flat on apiece of pretty paper.Press it firmly in placeand then use an X-Actoknife to trim off the ex-cess along the edgesfor a clean finish. Dothe same along theedges of the tin. Painta thin layer of gluearound the edges andsprinkle with glitter, place a gift card insideand tie it all up with aribbon.

Got $33 million?

Buying a place heretakes $189,000.

We all want that perfect center-piece to set the scene whenwe’re entertaining during theholidays, but how can you wowguests without dropping majorcash at the fancy florist? Floraldesigner and founder of Ameri-can Schools of Flower Design,Michael Gaffney, gives us acrash course.

Get inspired“Page through magazines look-ing for a style you like. ‘Copy, copy, copy’ is my motto.Arrangements in magazinesare by designers who know thelooks; those are the looks thateverybody admires. Sometimesif you just pick it apart, you’llfigure it out.”

The vessel is key“Avoid wicker baskets — inother words, choose the rightcontainer. Go out on a limb anduse something modern, such asconcrete or metal.”

Think beyond poinsettia“Use flowers that you normallydon’t see. It doesn’t have to bepoinsettias and white mums, itcan be hydrangeas, kale orwhite stock — which is actuallya spring flower, but with pineand cedar it looks beautiful.Use lots of branches — not on-ly the pines and cedars, butdark woods and curly willows

can be incorporated into reallymodern arrangements.”

Easy tricks“Take lots of one type of flowerand collar it with different ma-terials. Take four bunches ofwhite stock and collar withmagnolia leaves, then collar itwith another material like pine— very chic, very high-endlooking. I also like ornamentswhere you stick a [branch] in itand you use them as flowers inyour design.”

Preserving your work“Designers put bleach in thewater. A couple of drops ofbleach in an average size vasestops the bacteria from destroy-ing the drinking mechanisms.

Also, submerge your flowersunderwater for a half hour to45 minutes — they’ll hydratethrough the surface. Use aproduct called Crowning Glory, which is a wax sealant thatkeeps them from dehydrating. If you don’t have that, justspray them with water daily.Flowers are all about water.”

Source the best blooms “Start knowing your source, whether it’s your grocerystore, florist or wholesale mar-ket. When you feel flowers, they should feel almost plastic— which means they’re justplump with water.”

All eyes on the tableDon’t even think about reaching for those poinsettiasHow to deck your tablescapes this holiday season

Use nontraditional flowers like hydrangeas in your holiday centerpiece this year.

Floral designer Michael Gaffney says it’s all about practice when it comes to creating your own centerpieces at home.

Stay clear of traditional flowers

like poinsettias this holiday season.
