1 More than a year ago, DennisPlaydon was preparing to teachan introduction to architecturalpreservation course at TempleUniversity when he stumbledupon the perfect project for hisstudents: saving Joe Frazier’sGym in North Philadelphia.
Playdon, an adjunct profes-sor at Temple’s Tyler School ofArt, came up with the idea afterseeing a “for sale” sign on thelandmark three-story buildingon North Broad Street nearGlenwood Avenue where Fra-zier’s name still can be seenetched overhead.
“I was astounded to see a‘for sale’ sign on it because I al-ways assumed since he was ahuge champion in the world hewas well-off,” Playdon said.“The alarming thing to me was,how could such a famous gymmaybe be on the verge of beingdemolished or sold? It seemedto be unbelievable that thesports world hadn’t jumpedin.”
Playdon said he sent a letterto Frazier, but because of theboxing legend’s illness at thetime there was no response. Hetried sending pictures of thegym, which houses a furniturestore on the ground floor, tosports magazines, but that did-n’t work. Playdon then hadsome of his students nominatethe building to the Preserva-tion Alliance of GreaterPhiladelphia’s EndangeredProperties List, which acceptedit. That designation helped tocatch the eye of the NationalTrust for Historic Preservation, which listed the building on itsEndangered Properties list inJune.
Some of Playdon’s studentsare in the process of submit-ting an application for thePhiladelphia Register for His-toric Places, which would pro-tect the building from demoli-tion or major changes to theexterior by any future owner.

belts Now they are battling to protect it forever from demolition or future exterior overhauls
Ann Dinh and Michael Baker are among the Temple students submitting an application to haveJoe Frazier’s Gym designated to the Philadelphia Register for Historic Places.

Germany has opened a warcrimes investigation into an 87-year-old Czechoslovakian-bornman who currently lives inNortheast Philadelphia. Thecountry is saying he served asan SS guard at the Auschwitzdeath camp during World WarII, according to a report fromthe Associated Press.
The German office in chargeof handling Nazi war crimeshas reportedly recommendedto prosecutors that retired tool-maker Johann “Hans” Breyerbe extradited to Germany andtried as an accessory to themurder of at least 344,000 Jewsat the Auschwitz II-Birkenaucamp in occupied Poland.
A source told the AP that of-ficials in the Bavarian town ofWeiden, who have jurisdictionover the case, are deciding nowwhether the evidence againstBreyer is sufficient for prosecu-tion. Breyer admitted to the APthat he was a guard atAuschwitz during World War II,but claimed that he workedoutside the facility. He also tes-tified at a previous court hear-ing that he served at AuschwitzI, which was largely used forslave labor, not at Auschwitz II,where much of the wholesaleslaughter occurred. The hear-
ing was a part of the U.S. JusticeDepartment’s decade-long-plusbattle to have Breyer deported, the AP also reported.
The Justice Department lostthat fight when a judge in 2003ruled that Breyer had joinedthe SS as a minor, was recruitedat the age of 17 and was notlegally responsible for his par-ticipation in the army. Support-ing that finding was Breyer’sclaim that he deserted his postat Auschwitz in August 1944.
But per a U.S. Army intelli-gence file obtained by the AP, a1951 background check ofBreyer conducted when he firstapplied for a U.S. visa listed himas a member of an SS battalionin Auschwitz as late as fourmonths after he said he desert-ed. Breyer could, under U.S.law, face extradition to Ger-many if prosecutors chargehim.

Founded in 2007, theEnvision Peace Museumwent through an extendedvisioning phase, solicitingadvice from professionalsacross many fields whilegenerating buzz through atraveling exhibitions and, most recently, a film viewing

Themuseum is currently in theprocess of forming anacademic advisory board toestablish even more of whatGagne calls “curatorialcredibility.” It will on Nov. 3hold an implementationconference to discuss its nextstep: a physical location. Here’s a rundown of some ofthe space’s plannedcomponents:
A prototyping space, or“peace lab,” where the publiccan come try out an exhibitbefore it’s launched and offerfeedback, making themuseum’s content acollaborative effort betweencurators and the community.
A gallery and event space formultimedia art, performances anddiscussions — special guests

Anew kind of museum isasking Philadelphia togive peace a chance. The Envision Peace Mu-
seum, slated to open its CenterCity doors in 2014, will featureinteractive exhibits about so-cial justice. And it boasts big-name advisory board memberslike Judy Wicks, Alan Green-berger and Ben and Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen. DirectorMichael Gagne spoke withMetro last week.
What was the inspirationbehind the Envision Peace Museum?A big part of it was the idea ofbuilding a space for people toask better questions about howchange happens in our society, the roots of violence and wherewe’re going. The first chair ofthe board, [architect and muse-um planner] Tony Junker, wentinto a museum bookshop justafter the start of the secondGulf War. ... And he noticed allthese books about our nation’smilitary history, particularlygeared toward children. Hefound himself asking, ‘How canwe break the cycle if these arethe stories we tell ourselvesabout ourselves all the time?’And as someone who camefrom a museum field, he real-ized we have [thousands] ofmilitary museums throughoutthe country, but very few dedi-cated to peace and justice inthe world. What will the “What is Peace”exhibit consist of?I see that exhibit, which is justbeing developed, as kind of askeleton key to unlock the larg-er content of the museum.“What is Peace” will be a touch-stone allowing us explore what
are the fundamental questionsabout peace and violence. ... Interms of what it’ll look like, it’snot just going to be panels onthe wall. We envision really ex-periential exhibits — not justmultimedia, but simulationsand games that invite people todraw their own conclusions outof those experiences, which Ithink is kind of congruent withthe idea of peace-building.What’s your timeline for development?Right now, we’re seeing this asa phased development strategysimilar to the Please Touch Mu-seum, where you open a small-er space and use it as a touch-stone to launch a large space. We plan to open our first spacein 2014.
“We got someamazing feedbackthat has been sohelpful to us. One isthat, ‘Hey, this can’tjust be aboutinternationalissues. It has to berelevant to peoplein Philadelphiawho are strugglingwith gun violence, who are strugglingwith poverty.’”GAGNE ON THE MUSEUM’SEXTENDED VISIONING PROCESS

But geckos have one of the most amaz-ing adaptations in the animalkingdom. The bottom of their feetisn’t sticky, but covered in tiny hairs
like a rug. Each hair has up to 1,000 splitends. A single gecko has around two billionsplit-end tips.
When these creatures walk on a leaf, theatoms in the tip of each hair come close tothe atoms in the leaf. When an atom in oneobject comes close to an atom in another, there’s a tiny attractive force like unimagin-ably small magnets. This is happening nowbetween your body and everything youtouch. Humans don’t notice because therearen’t enough atoms in our rough skin closeto other surfaces.
A gecko’s two billion hairs achieve such ahigh level of contact, there is enough attrac-tion between foot atoms and leaf atoms tosupport the gecko’s weight, even with a sin-
gle toe. They lift their feet by literally peelingthe atoms in their toes away from atoms inother objects.
This atomic adaptation allows these crea-tures to run up the smoothest surfacesknown to man without slipping. Geckosdon’t hold onto objects by friction, but by thetotal attractive force of atoms in close prox-imity.
Scientists can now mimic the fibers onthe bottom of a gecko’s foot artificially.Manipulating the number of hairsincreases or decreases the amount of
atoms in close proximity and strength of thematerial. A single piece of the strongest man-made gecko foot attracts atoms so strongly, asticky-note sized piece can hold a weight of660 pounds.
This means soon you will soon saygoodbye to Velcro or nailing a TV to the wall. These materials will replace many of the ad-hesives in everyday life. This is a consequenceresulting from a study of geckos walking onleaves. That is a true story of gecko feet. Theworld is not what it seems.

CERTAIN INLIFE: DEBTAND TAXES
CONN CARROLL SENIOR EDITORIAL WRITER FORTHE WASHINGTON EXAMINER
Worse than most off-the-cuff remarks, that quote is a mess of overlapping, but very different, demographics, ideas and statistics. Let’s untanglethem a bit.
First off, Romney seems dead accurate on hisestimation of how many Americans will supportObama this fall. Gallup has Romney and Obamaboth pegged at 47 percent in its latest poll.
But, even though 46 percent of Americans payno federal income tax, not only do many of thosesame Americans pay payroll taxes, but many ofthem, including the working poor and seniorcitizens, are probably going to vote for Romneythis fall. These people are not victims, andRomney should not write them off.
Romney is much more on target when hesuggests that Americans are dependent ongovernment like never before. According to theCensus Bureau, 49 percent of Americans currentlylive in a household where at least one personreceived some type of government benefit.(Medicaid, Social Security, food stamps, PellGrants, etc.)
But again, many of the people in thisgroup — particularly Social Security andMedicare recipients — will be voting forRomney in the fall, too. And again, thesepeople do not necessarily perceive
themselves as victims. The federal governmentpromised them that if they paid payroll taxesthroughout their careers, then Social Security andMedicare would be there for them when theyretired. Protecting these programs is no differentthan honoring a contract signed long ago. There isnothing more conservative than that.
Unfortunately, the federal government can’tafford all the promises it has made. According tothe 2012 Trustees Report, the Social Securitysystem is already paying out $165 billion more inbenefits than it will take in in taxes this year. Thesame is true for the Medicare Parts A, B, and D —programs that were $225 billion in the red.
Instead of fixing this existing entitlement fiscaldisaster, Obama chose to create a brand-new one.Obamacare will cost $1.8 trillion during just thefirst 10 years. Obama has convinced the American
people that all of this deficit spending can be paidfor just by raising taxes on the rich. It isn’t true.
According to Obama’s own budget, his taxhikes will raise only $952 billion over the next 10years. In the meantime, he plans to spend morethan $40 trillion while adding another $6.4 trillionto our existing $16 trillion debt.
These numbers show why Obama’slegislative affairs director, Rob Nabors, admitted to Bob Woodward, “You couldraise all the taxes you want onmillionaires ... and it would never raise
enough.”The kernel of truth behind Romney’s riff on the
47 percent is that our country simply can’t affordObama’s spending plans without massive tax hikeson everyone ... even those who are currentlystruggling to get by while paying no income taxesat all.

Mitt Romney may be tied with President Obama inthe latest Gallup tracking poll, but that has notstopped the liberal media from declaring the raceover ... again. The pundits’ latest excuse for writingoff Romney is a grainy videotape from May in whichRomney can barely be heard saying: “There are 47percent of the people who will vote for the presidentno matter what. All right, there are 47 percent whoare with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe thegovernment has a responsibility to care for them, whobelieve that they are entitled to health care, to food,to housing, to you-name-it. That that’s anentitlement. And the government should give it tothem. And they will vote for this president no matterwhat. ... These are people who pay no income tax.”
Romney trailing behindin support from womenPresident Barack Obama’sstanding with white femaleshas not improved even as hisparty has spent much of 2012attacking Republicans as out oftouch on women’s issues.
But Democrats’ rhetoricabout a “war on women” hascreated doubt in the minds ofwhite women about supportingthe Republican ticket, hurtingpresidential nominee MittRomney with a demographiche must win.
It’s a stark reality for Rom-ney, who needs suburbanwomen in his camp to offsetObama’s lock on black votersand overwhelming supportamong Hispanics.
“It’s possible that by elec-
tion that vote will look verysimilar to 2008,” said KyleKondik, political analyst at theUniversity of Virginia Centerfor Politics. “But getting to 2008numbers doesn’t do it for Rom-ney.”
In swing states, Obama’s at-tempts to rally women aroundsocial issues have receivedmixed results. In Virginia andFlorida, Romney still leads Oba-ma among white women buthas seen a drop-off in support, while in Colorado and Wiscon-sin, he has picked up votes, ac-cording to recent QuinnipiacUniversity surveys and 2008 ex-it polls. In Ohio, the gap is vir-tually unchanged.
Across those five battle-
grounds, Obama has either notseen a change or he has fallenout of favor with many whitewomen. It’s a fact Republicansthink they can build on goinginto the final stretch of thecampaign.
“I like our chances knowingthat, versus the million andone hurdles that the McCain-Palin team faced in 2008,” saidPete Snyder, who is leading theRepublican Party’s coordinatedcampaign efforts in Virginia. “Ifthe challenge here is just upthe ante a little bit more withwhite women and that’s thepath to the presidency, I likethat as an issue for the next sixweeks.” STEVE CONTORNO, WASH-INGTON EXAMINER

Labor force statsindicate many arejust discouragedEconomists, analyzing govern-ment data, estimate about 4million fewer people are in thelabor force than in December2007, primarily due to a lack ofjobs rather than the normal ag-ing of America’s population.
If all those so-called discour-aged jobseekers had remainedin the labor force, August’s job-less rate of 8.1 percent wouldhave been 10.5 percent. Thejobs crisis spurred the FederalReserve last week to launch anew bond-buying program andpromise to keep it running un-til the labor market improves. The labor force participationrate, or the proportion of work-ing-age Americans who have ajob or are looking for one, hasfallen by an unprecedented 2.5percentage points sinceDecember 2007, slumping to a31-year low of 63.5 percent.REUTERS

It’s all gum all the time for Kel-lan Lutz — with a few starringroles thrown in.
Last Wednesday, the “Twi-light” star popped up at HelenMills, a theater and event spacein New York, to launch his lat-est endeavor: Being the enthu-siastic spokesperson for iDGum, a new brand of thechewy stuff which is geared to

The collaboration betweeniD and Lutz isn’t just for profit, mind you. “I only want to staytrue to my brand and do greatquality products, which this is.I’m a huge fan of the gum. Ilove gum,” he told reportersabout his decision to lend hisname to iD.
Dude loves gum, amiright? So much so that even when wewere able to get him off mes-sage to talk about what’s nextfor his career, we couldn’t helpbut read in between the lines(quotes in bold belong to TheWord).
“It’s bittersweet,” he saysabout the end of “Twilight”[and possibly a new flavor ofgum]. He continued: “It feelslike closing a chapter but in away it’s like your last days ofhigh school — you’re reallylooking forward to college andI’m really looking forward tothat [like I’m looking forward tothis piece of iD Gum]. It’s beengreat having my own projectnow, to [chew delicious gumand] be the lead in ‘Tarzan’ [acharacter who wasn’t fortunateenough to be alive when gumwas so accessible, but I think hechewed on pine bark of somesort]. Hopefully we can fran-chise that. It’s going to be great[just like this piece of iD Gum I’mwaiting to chomp on].”

Jimmy Kimmel gave the show some much-needed life.
ABC/TODD WAWRYCHUK
Good times for great TVWith a wink and a nod towardeverything the Primetime Em-mys usually is — slow, boringand self-congratulatory — hostJimmy Kimmel injected life in-to the 64th edition of theawards show broadcast livefrom Los Angeles last night.
In the pre-taped opener, anover-botoxed Kimmel receiveda morale boost from an all-starcast of nominated funny ladiesand presenters — including anaked Lena Dunham eating abirthday cake on a toilet —primping backstage for TV’sbiggest night. It was a smart, quirky and unexpected com-mentary on the evening, whichKimmel later summed up in hismonologue: Ten hours of get-ting ready, heatstroke on thered carpet, no carbs in months, and it’s all worth it to see if “SoYou Think You Could Dance”star Cat Deeley would win for
best reality TV host (Tom Berg-eron of “Dancing with theStars” beat her for the statue).
It was all worth it for thecast and creators of “ModernFamily” and “Homeland.” TheABC sitcom, named best come-dy, dominated the category, with additional statues going tostars Eric Stonestreet and JulieBowen for best supporting ac-tor and actress, and creatorSteve Levitan taking the awardfor best direction.
Freshman Showtime series“Homeland” was named topdrama, with its headlining duoalso taking high honors: ClaireDanes won for best lead actress, while Damian Lewis wasawarded best lead actor. The se-ries also took the statue for bestdrama writing.
OtherstandoutmomentsHost Jimmy Kimmel satbetween “Breaking Bad”stars Bryan Cranston andAaron Paul — who won forbest supporting actor in adrama — and asked if theyhad ever pondered whattheir AMC show would havebeen like before cable.
Cut to a black-and-whitespoof on the openingcredits to “The Andy GriffithShow,” with Cranston andPaul’s characters wearingtheir trademark hazmatsuits — and carrying fishingrods to the ‘ole swimminghole. Subversive andgenius!

The LAPD,‘real as possible’
Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena star as two young LAPD officers who are marked for death after crossing a notorious cartel.

‘End of Watch’ stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena did their research before putting
on their badges What makes a police film work
‘‘Training Day” screenwriterDavid Ayers is making his direc-torial debut with the policethriller “End of Watch,” but hesays he was unfazed by theenormous task of capturing theLos Angeles Police Department— thanks mostly to his famil-iarity with the landscape. “It’sthe city I came of age in. I knowit like the back of my hand,” Ay-ers says. “I wanted to go at thislike it was a documentary. It’sas real as possible. It ended up alabor of love.”
He apparently knows theLAPD like the back of his handas well. Between writing “Train-ing Day” and “SWAT” andhelming “End of Watch,” Ayershas a clear affinity for Los Ange-les’ finest. “I think the LAPD is afascinating institution with in-credible history,” he says. “Theyset the benchmark for the restof the country.”
Taking on the role of one ofthe two officers at the center ofthe film, Jake Gyllenhaal felt heowed it to the real LAPD offi-cers he met to live as they do inorder to capture their essence.“We did five months of ride-alongs, two to three nights aweek,” Gyllenhaal says of histime spent with real LAPD offi-cers. “What’s behind the badge
is a real human being and therelationships they have.”
Playing the other side ofthat bond is Michael Pena, whosays he knows what makes agood police film: “partners whoclick.”
“In ‘Training Day,’ if EthanHawke and Denzel Washingtondon’t have that connection, itdoesn’t work,” Pena says, though he admits it took awhile for him and Gyllenhaalto find that connection them-selves. “We did not get alongthat well in the beginning. Weknew that there was that broth-erhood that we needed in orderto make this work. It was writ-ten right in the script. Damn! They’re not just partners —they’re brothers.”

my 15#1 DAILY NEWSPAPER IN CENTER CITY MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2012
This past weekend I at-tended the Women andPower conference at theOmega Institute in
Rhinebeck, N.Y. I was blessed tohear from leaders like SallyField, Eve Ensler, Majora Carterand many more. Whetheryou’re a woman or a man, Ithink you’ll benefit from thediscussions held there.
In the invocation speech,Omega’s founder, ElizabethLesser, raved about the lineupof speakers and all of the em-powering voices she’s encoun-tered throughout her career, in-cluding Nobel Peace Prize win-ners, spiritual leaders andworld-renowned activists. Look-
ing into the crowd, she said,“These leaders are no differentthan you are. We all have inse-curities about speaking ourtruth and we’re all just makingit up as we go along.”
This message resonatedwith me deeply. As a speakerand author I am out in theworld sharing my voice and ex-pressing it fully. Though I’ve
created a platform for speakingmy truth, I still have momentswhen I question my right tospeak up. This weekend atOmega I realized I’m not alone.Field spoke of her fear of great-ness, Carter admitted her fearof speaking about leadershipand Ensler spoke of her need tobe accepted. As I listened tosome of the world’s greatestleaders share their deep-rootedfears, I realized we’re all in it to-gether. In some way or another,we all question our right toclaim our voice and share ourbeliefs with the world. Lessercalls this “imposter syndrome,”the feeling of, “How dare Ispeak up? How dare I claim my
power?” Our inner voice offear, the imposter voice, holdsus back and blocks us fromowning our opinion, our voiceand our power.
Our power cannot comefrom an outside creden-tial — it must comefrom an internal condi-
tion. Carter said it best: “Listento the voices that are tellingyou that you are powerful. It’syour duty to share that.”
Rather than see ourselves asseparate from the world’s greatleaders, we must accept thatwe’re all in this together. AsLesser said, “No one is sure, noone has the answer, but we
need leaders who are willing todo something that has neverbeen done before.” If you denythe power of your inner voice, you deny the world of revolu-tionary change. If these womenhadn’t used their voices, wewouldn’t have Ensler’s V-Dayglobal movement to end vio-lence against women and girls
or Carter’s Sustainable SouthBronx revolution or organiza-tions like UNICEF and PlannedParenthood. What will happenwithout your voice?

Don’t be ajerk: Are you a mean boss? Yelling, insults, unprofessionale-mails: It’s not hard to spotthe mean boss. But what if youare the boss? There’s a differ-ence between being a hard-to-please supervisor and short-fused tyrant. If you’re losingyour cool, maybe it’s time tore-evaluate your techniques.
Get to the sourceIt’s time to figure out what’s really eating away at you.“Mean bosses need to under-stand at a very deep level whatthe triggers are that promptyelling, insulting and otherforms of torture,” explainsNancy A. Shenker, career advi-sor and co-author of “Don’tHook Up With the Dude in theNext Cube.” Additionally, sheadvises evaluating youremployees and accepting thatyou could be part of the prob-lem: Do you have them in theright positions? Could you
have trained them better?
Understand theconsequences of yourshort temperYou can’t expect to be agrumpy boss and not burn afew bridges. “There is never areason to be a nasty boss,” saysLeslie Austin, an executivecoach at Austin Consulting.“It’s bad business, creates badblood and is alwayscounterproductive to real pro-ductivity. And it’s the fastestway to kill off any sense of co-operation or teamwork in anoffice group.”
Take responsibility If you want to fix your reputa-tion as a mean boss, start byaddressing the problem.“Meet with unhappy employ-ees,” suggests Amy Lieberman, author of “Mediation Success.”“Acknowledge you could havehandled a situation better, andapologize. When we are askedto forgive, we are more likelyto consider bending.”

Once a fringe field, animal law is now an established practice Lawyer, animal advocate and author Yolanda Eisenstein on her new career guide
Around 2007, YolandaEisenstein startinglooking for a way to puther law degree to work
for a humanitarian cause. “I wanted to start my own
practice. I discovered an emerg-ing area of the law, animal law, that really interested me, be-cause I had always been an ani-mal advocate,” she explains. “Ireally had no idea that I coulduse my law degree in thatarea.”
Today Eisenstein has herown animal law practice in Dal-las, Tex., where she specializesin pet trusts, nonprofit law foradvocacy groups and wrongfuldeath litigation.
Recently, Eisenstein au-thored “Careers in Animal Law:Welfare, Protection, and Advo-cacy,” the first guidebook of itskind released by the AmericanBar Association. “Careers in An-
imal Law” provides outside-the-box ideas on finding work inthe field, from government po-sitions and public policy analy-sis, to nonprofits and privatepractice. The book also in-
cludes 13 extended profiles oflawyers who specialize in ani-mal law.
Eisenstein readily admitsthat animal advocacy is notcurrently the most profitablearea of the law, but she sees itas one of the fastest-growingfields in the profession.
“I see a lot of comparisonsto environmental law. Whenit started, most in the profes-sion thought these lawyerswere just a bunch of ‘tree-hug-gers,’ and no one saw it as a lu-crative area of the law,” shesays. “But look at it now: It’sbecome a very established, recognized area of the law. Un-less you’re my age, you don’teven remember a time whenenvironmental law wasn’t tak-en seriously.”
At the moment, animal law isn’t a very profitable area of the law, but it’s one that’s growing quickly. BRUCE WALSH

The best laid plainsof mice and DemsRE: “LOOK BETWEEN (PARTY)LINES” (METRO, SEPT. 20) Letterwriter Mike Treacy begins hisletter with an appeal to rea-son and facts, but quickly de-generates to Karl Rove/FoxNews partisan rant. Sorry, butthe eight years of the Bush ad-ministration left this countyin a shambles. That is whyObama was elected. It was nosurprise! And he did have aplan, but when acongressman of the opposingparty yells “Liar!” during thevery first State of the Unionaddress and the leader of theopposing party in the Senatestates, “The single mostimportant thing we want toachieve is for President Oba-ma to be a one-termpresident,” what chance dohis plans have? No one didthat to Bush — even though
he was elected by theSupreme Court.KATHY KOURIAN, VIA E-MAIL
Saturday’s childrenare the real victimsin today’s societyRE: “ROMNEY VS. THE REST OF US”(METRO, SEPT. 20) Columnwriter Michael Frosch focuseson honesty as being the pre-scription for the health of ademocracy,
What he misses is that hishero, Barack Obama, has notbeen honest. Did he not seethe video from 1998 in whichObama confesses that he is a“redistributionist”? This isprogressive-speak for takingmy money and giving it tosomeone who has not earnedit. My husband and I aremembers of the upper-middle
class. Our tax bracket is com-prised of 5 percent of allAmericans. Yet we pay 40 per-cent of the nation’s tab. Weboth come from single parenthouseholds and started withnothing. I have the privilegeof keeping 40 cents out ofevery dollar I earn as a psychi-atric nurse. On of the thingsthat I have learned in my jobis that while some are unableto work due to chronic men-tal illness, many others areproducts of Lyndon Johnson’sGreat Society and haveneither the grit or motivationto better themselves.
Yes, democracy dependson honesty. It also depends oneconomic freedom and fair-ness. Why is it fair for me topay so much and be vilified, along with Mitt Romney, be-cause we are successful? DONNA S. COHEN, VIA E-MAIL
Romney’s record issimply risky (andgood) businessRE: “ELEPHANTS AREN’T THE ON-LY ONES WITH A GOOD MEMORY”(METRO, SEPT. 21-23) Letterwriter Brian Grau is accusingMike Treacy and Republicansof lying, but he is immediate-ly falling into the the sametrap by stating that, “everycompany [Romney] boughthas gone bankrupt.”
Nothing could be fartherfrom the truth.
Some of Romney’sventures were successes (can’tname all due to space limita-tions — Staples, SportsAuthority and Domino’s cer-tainly come to mind), andsome were failures, but this isnatural for any business thattakes a risk.
Romney used his ownfunds for his investments, while Obama dumped taxpay-ers’ money into Solyndra andsimilar failures, without a co-herent business plan and ac-countability of theemployees.GAROLD MINKIN, VIA E-MAIL

Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald goesoff on Eagles defense Philly now 2-1 heading into Giants gameThere was no miracle finishthis time. The Eagles came outflat against an aggressive, hun-gry, attacking Cardinals de-fense and saw their two-gamewinning streak end, 27-6, in thedesert. Kevin Kolb (17-of-24, 222yards, 2 TDs) outdueled MikeVick (17-of-37, 217 yards, 0 TDs)as the Eagles look to get backon track next Sunday.
What went wrong …
The game planAfter calling one of the mostbalanced games of his coach-ing career a week ago, AndyReid dialed up the pass heavyand hard in Arizona. The Ea-gles called 26 passes and fiveruns in the first half as Ari-zona jumped out to a 24-0lead. When the Birds finallygot down to the 1-yard lineright before halftime, theywent pass, pass, pass beforeMike Vick was popped andfumbled. Reid fixed the run-pass ratio in the second half,
but it was way too little, waytoo late.
No answer for FitzNot many teams can stop Lar-ry Fitzgerald, but the Eagleshave two of the best corners inthe game and had a full weekto prepare. Nothing. Fizgeraldlined up all over the place —left, right, slot — and rackedup 105 yards in the first halfalone, or almost as much asthe entire Eagles’ offense(139). Nnamdi Asomugha andKurt Coleman were arguingover who should have guardedhim on his first TD.
Turnovers, turnovers, turnoversIt’s been written about, talkedabout, asked about ad nause-am, but they are still doing it.The Eagles turned the ballover three more times, givingthem 12 in three games.

Revis bangedup in Jets win Jets star cornerback DarrelleRevis suffered a potentiallyserious knee injury yester-day in the third quarter ofNew York’s 23-20 overtimevictory over the Dolphins inMiami. Nick Folk’s 33-yardfield goal with just over sixminutes left in the overtimeperiod gave the Jets theroad win. Dolphins kickerDan Carpenter missed a 48-yarder just minutes before, which would have given theDolphins the win.
Everyone in the building knewMike Vick was dropping backto pass. So the quarterbackcouldn’t have been that sur-prised when Cardinals safetyKerry Rhodes plowed into himoff the left edge, causing a dis-astrous fumble that was re-turned 93 yards for a touch-down.
“It was a situation where Ishould have been looking to getthe ball out of my hands ifthings weren’t there,” Vick said.“I tried to hold onto it and makea play, and I just took a hit.”
The Eagles were looking toscore and cut into Arizona’slead. Seconds later, the air hadbeen slashed from their tires. The Eagles walked into thelocker room down 24-0 at half-time.
“That definitely took a lot of
momentum from us,” DeSeanJackson said. “It was 17-0 andwe had a chance to go in andscore a touchdown to make it17-7. That definitely hurt.”
The Eagles looked all out ofsorts in their 27-6 loss to theCardinals yesterday in thedesert. They committed threemore turnovers, putting theirthree-game season total at 12.On the Vick fumble, the Cardi-nals brought an extra rusher. No one picked him up.
“They brought one morethan we had blockers,” left
guard Evan Mathis said.LeSean McCoy was the one
that should have pickedRhodes up. However, the run-ning back admitted he wasfooled by the defense, whichfaked the blitz with two differ-ent players before the snap. Mc-Coy said the key to improvingdoesn’t mean making majoradjustments. It’s about makingsmarter decisions on the field.
“Adjustments? It’s as simpleas being disciplined,” McCoysaid. “Small things, blockingthe right guy, holding onto theball … I feel like a team canstop an offense but we’re givingthem possession of the ball, that’s something totally differ-ent.”
The Cardinals defense frustrated Mike Vick for much of the afternoon.

Same old story for Lee “Boom” is the word scrawledon the T-shirt Cliff Lee sportsunder his jersey. Perhaps Leeshould consider donning a“hard luck loser” shirt.
It’s been like the film“Groundhog Day” wheneverLee pitches in 2012. Lee typical-ly tosses a gem with no marginfor error and then loses, partic-ularly at Citizens Bank Park, where he has won only a pairof games this season.
The frustration mounts forLee and the desperate Phillies, who need a miracle to makethe playoffs after losing to theBraves 2-1 Sunday afternoonwhile the Cardinals beat theCubs.
Lee, who struck out elevenin eight innings, was very good.He gave up a home run toDavid Ross and escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the thirdby giving up just one run.
“I felt really fortunate to getout of that,” Lee said. “I wasable get through eight and Ithink I gave the team a chanceto win.”
Lee pitched well enough fora victory, but the Phillies didn’tsupply enough offense for awin. Lee gave up two runs onnine hits, but the Phillies couldonly manage a paltry pair ofsingles by John Mayberry Jr.and Kevin Frandsen.
“We just didn’t get it donetoday,” Juan Pierre said. “Youhave to give Tim Hudson cred-it.”
Hudson was dominant. Hepounded the plate and mixedspeeds throughout the game.
Lee, meanwhile, is now 6-8despite an ERA of 3.18, which isthe eleventh best in the NL.
Phillies offense can’t get anything going as Lee falls to 6-8 on seasonTeam five games back in wild card standings Minor miracle needed

Halladay unlikelyto start Thursday
May be in Phillies’ best interests to shut down DocAce coming off one of worst starts of his career
Apparently it’s not a done dealthat Roy Halladay will startThursday night’s home finaleagainst the Washington Na-tionals. According to the pressnotes, Kyle Kendrick wasmoved up to pitch Wednesdaynight. Thursday night is listedas TBA (to be announced). Withthe Phillies’ playoff chances di-minishing, it wouldn’t be sur-prising to see Tyler Cloyd starton fan appreciation night. Therookie would be starting on ex-tra rest.
Halladay was rocked Satur-day afternoon by the Braves. Hegave up seven runs in an inningand two-thirds, the secondshortest of his enviable career.
The baseball world waswondering what was up withHalladay, who was on the dis-abled list for eight weeks with aright lat strain. Well, the 2010Cy Young Award winner shedsome light on what might haveaffected his dismal perform-ance after Saturday’s game.
He admitted that he has hadsome spasms behind his rightshoulder blade over the lastfew days. That prompted Doc
to see a doc the day before hisstart.
“I had some stuff going onand was checked out,” Halla-day said. “The doctors said itwas nothing they were con-cerned about.”
But the Phillies have to beconcerned about Halladay’scondition. The club is on thehook for $20 million to Halla-day for 2013. So perhaps it
would be in the club’s and Hal-laday’s best interest to shutdown the one-time stopper forthe remainder of the lost sea-son.
It would be another story ifthe Phillies were headed to theplayoffs, but their post-seasonprospects are bleak.
Chiefs stun Saints in OT In a huge upset, the Chiefsknocked the Saints to 0-3 onthe season with a three-pointovertime win, 27-24, whichwas their first win of theyoung season. The Chiefscame all the way back frombeing down 24-6 midwaythrough the third quarter.Chiefs running back JamaalCharles ran for 233 yards and
a touchdown on 33 carries inthe win.
Cowboys dumpBuccaneers The Cowboys bounced backfrom a loss in Seattle lastweek with a 16-10 win intheir home opener. Tony Ro-mo and the Cowboys offensedidn’t have a particularlygood day, but their defenseheld the Bucs to only 166yards of total offense, leadingthem to the win.
Titans win wild affair In arguably the wildestgame of the young season, the Titans earned their firstwin of the year, beating theLions in overtime, 44-41.The two teams combined foran astonishing 46 fourthquarter points before Titanskicker Rob Bironas won itwith a 26-yard field goal inovertime. Jake Locker threwfor 378 yards and two TDs.
