Letter Carrier Food Drive A Success

Submitted Photo

Aiden Gaither and Kailee Gaither pose in front of bags of food donated during the NALC Food Drive.

This was a great year for the National Asso-ciation of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive in Canton. The local let-ter carriers would like to thank their customers for giving so generously to the May 12 drive.

Support of the nation’s oldest one-day food drive helps individuals and fam-ilies who depend on alter-nate food sources, espe-cially during the summer months when donations are low and school lunch programs are suspended.

Donations of nonper-ishable food items sup-port local community food banks, pantries, and shelters. This year, Can-ton letter and rural carriers collected 1650 pounds of food to supplement the nu-tritional needs of residents in our area.

Postmaster Mary Houchins and letter carri-ers David Gaither, Terry Moon, Jackie Hooper, Marilyn Campen, David Schlotter and Nikki Bow-en extend their deepest thanks for supporting this worthy cause.

The drive this year marked the 20th anniver-sary for the event.

The drive, the largest one-day food-collection event in the nation, has been a success every year but the needs are particu-larly sad, even staggering,

in 2012.Sixteen percent of all

Americans are at risk of hunger—uncertain where their next meal may be

coming from. That in-cludes 1 in 5 children un-der the age of 18.

Re-New-All, the name says it all, Re- recycle, New- new stuff, All- all kinds of things. The business located at 515 Lewis Street in Canton, is a unique place that is quickly becoming well-known through out the tri-state area.

Owners Kirby and Dianna Clark opened the business on Nov. 1 and the business has grown to employ six peo-ple, eight permanent vendors and over 96 people consigning items. The Clark’s encourage the community to stop in and visit, enjoy a cup of coffee or a soda, and browse the wide selection of merchan-dise. They also encourage their custom-ers to visit the other shops in Canton and enjoy the great restaurants Canton offers. They want their business to be a commu-nity gathering place, where people can enjoy the friendly hometown atmosphere.

Merchandise includes furniture, col-lectibles, household items, quality, name brand offi ce furniture, nuts and bolts, art work, clothing, and numerous other items. Collectors often fi nd a another piece to add to their collections. Many customers see items that bring back pre-cious memories of their childhoods. Re-New-All encourages recycling. Things that may have found their way to a land-fi ll, can be reused in a different manner or remade to keep functional. They offer many parts and supplies and the rotating inventory changes everyday. They also keep a “want” list for their customers. Many people are looking for a certain item and they will try to fi nd it at a cost that the customer wants to pay.

The Gun Shop, will open this summer in the store. The shop will buy and sell

guns, ammo and accessories. On the third Saturday of each month

from April to November, a fl ea market is held in the parking lot. At the fi rst fl ea market in April, over 400 custom-ers viewed the offerings. Vendors are charged three dollars for a space. New also is a Farmers Market, that is free to vendors. This features anything home-made or homegrown which includes veg-etables, fruit and plants, fl owers, arts and crafts.

The store also offers how-to classes. Basket weaving, making stepping stones and upholstery classes are becoming popular. They are installing a kitchen for employees and once the kitchen is in-stalled, they will offer classes on canning vegetables and fruits and maybe a Home Ec class. Anyone can contact Dianna

Clark and request a class they would like to see offered and she will try to accom-modate any ideas.

The Clark’s combined family includes fi ve children. They enjoy attending auc-tions together and Dianna previously op-erated Yesteryear’s Antiques in Quincy. They keep up to date on customers wants and trends and keep their prices afford-able for their customers.

The Clark’s and their staff and ven-dors at Re-New-All invite everyone to come in and visit their business. They look forward to visiting with the many friendly people in the area and meeting new customers. For more information or questions, contact Re-New-All at (573) 288-3505.

Where Caring Makes A DifferenceWhere Our Family is Your Family

Congratulations...to Mariah Rose

& Jacob Morgan Taff!

We are so very proud of you!

Doesn’t it seem like there was a time everyone generally cared for each other? Doesn’t it seem like people used to be respect-ful and didn’t walk on the neighbor’s fl ower garden without a huge apology and maybe a peace offer-ing of an apple pie if we did?

Wasn’t there a time people really had our backs, regardless of politi-cal persuasion, religious affi liation, or perceived character fl aws? Have we always interrupted others who are speaking?

When did it become okay for people to be-rate each other publicly and anonymously on so-cial media? When did it become okay to blow cigarette smoke at an-other, even accidentally, because, of the rights of the smoker to breathe out, even if there are nearby people trying to breathe in?

When did it become humorously - or not so - acceptable to tell an over-weight person what they already know - that they are overweight, because we know of nothing else to discuss? When did it become vogue to toss empty beer cans and soda bottles at random, because someone will surely pick this up?

Who was it that de-cided because they enjoy a song with heavy bass in a car stereo that every-one else in the world must hear it playing at concert hall pitch?

When does someone’s

personal property no lon-ger belong to him or her? Why is it now seemingly okay to butt in line, when the others in the line also have appointments and schedules?

If it seems like rude behaviors and actions are just now fl ourishing, we need to think again. They have been around for a long time. Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be.

It isn’t a new behavior to which we are awaken-ing. Kids were bullied when we were kids, and if we weren’t the helpless wimp, then we were likely the big bad bully.

Perhaps any awaken-ing is that it’s more preva-lent than it once may have been. That is a RUDE-imentary (get it?) fact.

The awakening that still seems to be needed is that each one of us do and say hurtful things to people and respect others less all the time. People are asleep to this fact. Rude behavior is everywhere, and if there is any new fl ourishing, it’s because we each contrib-ute to this and don’t stand against it.
