1It’s not just your landlord. Ifrents always seem to be creep-ing up, it's because they are:Last month, Manhattan rentshit their highest price of thepast 10 years, according to anew report out today.

Citi Habitats issued the re-port, revealing that the aver-age Manhattan apartmentrented for $3,418 in March, setting a record since the realestate brokerage firm begantracking rents a decade ago.

This tops the previous toprent of $3,394, set in May2007.

Skyrocketing rents aremaking some New Yorkers re-think what it's worth to liveon the island of Manhattan.

After the rent at RussellLewis’ studio shot up $300this spring, he and his girl-friend started shopping for anew place to live. But all theyfound were a host of otherrental studios priced evensteeper.

“The scariest part was justseeing how high some of therents have gone," Lewis, 29, aninternal consultant at a bank, told Metro.

Like so many before, thehigh rents may push them in-to Brooklyn. They’re nowlooking at one-bedrooms tobuy in Carroll Gardens orWilliamsburg.

Kelly Killian, a broker withBond New York, said her clientsare cringing at Upper East Siderents that she says are 5 per-cent higher than last year.

So far, she said, they “arestill trying to stick it out,”adding, “The renters haven’t

jumped ship, the die-hardManhattanites.”

Others agree that the al-lure of Manhattan — and theability to write expensive rentchecks — has not ebbed, saidYuval Greenblatt, executivevice president at PrudentialDouglas Elliman, which alsoreleased a report today show-ing rising rents.

Who’s renting these apart-ment? New York Universityand Columbia students arefilling some of them, he said.

“The people who are com-ing to Manhattan all are ableto afford it ... If you're studyingat NYU or Columbia, you canafford the rent,” Greenblattsaid. “Most of these peoplehave the income to supportthat kind of rent, otherwisethey wouldn’t come here.”

Killian added that herclients are often tech-industrysuccesses.

“Prices are going up regard-less, because there’s stillenough demand to fill in thoseunits,” Greenblatt said.

Lawyer of teenagercharged in mom’sdeath blames meds

Police say Henry Wachtel killed his mother inside the apartment the two shared at this building on the corner of West 55th Street and Eighth Avenue.

The lawyer for a 19-year-oldman who is accused of beatinghis mother to death is blam-ing the gruesome event on hisclient’s epilepsy medication.

“It’s a very tragic incident,”defense attorney Lloyd Ep-stein said yesterday. “Every-one knows that Henry is anepileptic, and that sometimeswith medications unexpectedthings happen.”

Police announced late Tues-day night that Henry Wachtelwas charged with murderinghis mother, Karyn Kay.

Epstein declined to saywhat type of medication orhow much Wachtel was tak-ing. But a police source told theNew York Daily News Wachtelwas taking Keppra and Lamic-tal, two epilepsy medicationsthat can cause aggression.

Kay, a popular teacher atthe elite LaGuardia High

School, was found beaten todeath at her Midtown apart-ment Tuesday morning.

After getting a 911 call atabout 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, policesaid they raced to the West55th Street apartment to findKay, 63, lying on the groundwith severe head trauma.

Her skull was fractured, aswas one of her eye sockets, andshe had broken ribs, accordingto reports. She was taken toCornell Hospital, but could notbe saved, said police.

Kay and her son lived to-gether, and neighbors said theson suffered from an illness.

It was Kay who made thefrantic 911 call.

She screamed at the opera-tor that her son was beatingher while having a seizure, ac-cording to reports.

“Help, Help! He’s attackingme!” is what Kay reportedly

screamed.Neighbors told the Daily

News they heard shoutingcoming from inside the 10th-floor apartment Tuesdaymorning.

“He was screaming, ‘I’msorry, mommy!’ over and overand over,” a neighbor told theNews.

When police brought himout, he was covered in blood.Wachtel, a martial arts enthu-siast, is accused of beating hismother to death with nothingbut his bare hands.

“He kept apologizing to hismother the whole time — hekept saying, ‘I didn’t meanit,’” another neighbor told theNews. Wachtel was taken for apsych exam yesterday at Belle-vue Hospital.

Who wasKaryn Kay?Kay is remembered by herstudents as a beloved educa-tor and caring mother. Shetaught English at LaGuardiaHigh School by Lincoln Cen-ter and was also a visitingprofessor at Pratt Institutein Brooklyn.

Kay was a writer and afilmmaker, as well. Shewrote the screenplay for

“Call Me,” a 1988 film thatstarred Steve Buscemi. Sheis also remembered as a de-voted mother who deeplyloved her son.

Wachtel is a student atFordham University, wherehis father is a professor.Neighbors said they oftenheard shouting and fight-ing coming from the apart-ment the two shared, andthat Kay had said her sonwas having anger issueslately. METRO/AB

Bust out the noise-mak-ers, America, becausewe did it! Against allodds, under an inef-fective executive and

a deadlocked legislature, we’vesomehow managed to com-pletely snuff out the trouble-some U.S. deficit. Our long na-tional nightmare is over!

Oh, you didn’t hear this? You may actually have but justdon’t fully realize it. That’spartly because the issue is quite

wonkish and difficult to suc-cinctly explain, and partly be-cause of the pervasive journal-istic problem of false equivalen-cy. We’re going to do our bestto break down these issues.

This Tuesday, a report by Re-publican politician Charles Bla-hous made the rounds, inspir-ing another round of spin. Themedia response was unsurpris-ing; even we ran an article yes-terday asking, “‘Obamacare’could worsen US debt?”

Blahous had rechecked thecosts of health care reform andfound them to be off by some$340 billion. To do this, howev-er, he had to break from thetraditional methods both par-ties use to score all legislation.

It all comes down to trustfunds, and here’s where thingsget hairy. Medicare funds, likethose of other entitlement pro-grams, are distributed via trustfund. This system, generallydisliked by conservatives, ap-plies a sort of guaranteed secu-rity to these programs, making

it difficult for politicians to cutthem.

When these trustfunds run outpoliticians sim-ply refill them, because entitle-

ment programs are very popu-lar with voters. These fundsare, after all, paid by govern-ment bonds. This is why theCongressional Budget Office es-timate of the law’s costs as-sumed that Medicare paymentswould continue even after thefund empties.

Blahous takes issue withthis established method and sopretends it doesn’t exist. But itdoes, of course, and will mostlikely continue to do so.

Turns out an interestingthing happens when you ig-nore our arcane budget reali-ties: The real problems disap-pear. Using the Blahous logic,we needn’t worry about risingentitlement costs at all; theseprograms will, you see, stop

paying out as soon as theirfunds empty. Problem solved!

If only. “If we did things thatway,” says Medicare expert PaulVan de Water, “a lot of stuffwould look different.” But wedon’t, and it doesn’t.

Do you follow? If so, con-gratulations. The finer points ofbudget law are too difficult formost journalists — let alonethe average consumer — to un-derstand. Which brings us tothe problem of equivalency.Since issues like these can betoo nuanced for laymen to fullygrasp (we spent six hours re-searching and still feel out ofdepth), many reporters revertto “he said this, she said that”rather than qualifying the fac-tual accuracy of individualclaims. This allows journaliststo ignore the small matter ofwhether their sources are lying.

In more ways than one, Bla-hous teaches us what we gainfrom ignoring reality.

Reality rescores ‘Obamacare’

Metro does not endorse the opinions of theauthor, or any opinions expressed on its pages.

“Hello, world? Yeah, it’s me, Charles Blahous. Canwe change objective realityas we know it? Cool, thanks.”

Death and taxes collideas fatal crashes mount

Must have been tax day.

Death and taxes aren’t onlycertain, they also seem toshare a same deadline in theU.S., according to a study thatpoints to the role of stress infatal accidents.

Deaths from traffic acci-dents around April 15 — tra-ditionally the last day to fileindividual income taxes inthe U.S. — rose 6 percent onaverage on each of the last 30years of tax filing days com-pared with a day during theweek prior and during theweek later, according to re-search published in the Jour-nal of the American MedicalAssociation.

Even allowing Americansto file their taxes electronical-ly hasn’t negated the crashtrend, lead researcher DonaldRedelmeier said. The findings

suggest stress, lack of sleep, alcohol use and less toleranceto other drivers on tax dead-line day may contribute to anincrease in deaths on theroad, Redelmeier said.

“An increase of risk in thismagnitude is about the sameas what we observe on SuperBowl Sunday, a time notori-ous in the U.S. for drinkingand driving,” said Re-

delmeier, a professor of med-icine at the University ofToronto in Canada, in anApril 6 telephone interview.

The research showed thatthere were 226 fatal crashesfor each of the 30 tax days and213 fatal accidents for each ofthe 60 control days.

The study, which appearsas a research letter in themedical journal, looked at taxdeadline data from the Inter-nal Revenue Service and fataltraffic accident data from theNational Highway Traffic Safe-ty Administration from 1980to 2009. The researchers thenused a database to identifycrashes that led to deaths. Forevery tax day, they also identi-fied a day one week beforeand one week after as a com-parison. BLOOMBERG

2 THEWORDMetro’s Dorothy Robinson shares her take on the world of gossip @dorothyatmetro [email protected]

For Tuesday’s Word, I wroteabout Jennifer Lopez, 42, “gift-ing” beau/backup dancerCasper Smart, 25, with a cus-tom white Dodge pickup truckfor his birthday. Apparently,Lopez “knew that Casper reallywanted a truck, and Casperwas very excited about the gen-erous gift,” a source told Peoplemagazine. “Casper was so excit-ed about his new truck that hedecided to drive it to dinner.”

In the column, I made acrack about how 1. That“source” sounded like a quote-giving robot and 2. How I wassurprised that Lopez didn’t buyhim a Fiat considering all theshilling she does for them. Thiswas not the joke to make!Check out my reader mail:

“You may need to do somemore digging. Chrysler/Dodge/Ram are owned in part by Fiat, which helped bailout Chrysler! That is why he got a Ram Truckfrom J. Lo and not a Ford F-150!”

“Did you really not know that

Fiat and Dodge are both ownedby Chrysler LLC, when you wrotethat J.Lo dreck?”

“I feel obligated to point outthat Fiat holds a considerable fi-nancial and developmental stakein Chrysler (who makes Dodgeand Jeep vehicles). It wouldn’t betoo much of a stretch to assumeshe used an “employee discount”(if any money was spent at all) onthat Dodge truck.”

In my defense, I am only arecycler of celebrity gossip, nota hard-hitting journalist whoknows the ins and outs of thecar industry. However, thanksto my eagle-eyed readers, whodo know such things, we allnow know that this “newsitem” and “gift” was a totalplant by Fiat and that truck wasfree in exchange for press.Duped!

So, really, do celebrities everpay for anything? Or do theyjust have to save their cash forwhen they will inevitably needa high-priced divorce lawyer?

Lindsay Lohanstrikes backLindsay Lohan isn’t taking herlatest legal attack lying down.A woman has accused thetroubled actress of attackingher in a nightclub last week, and now Lohan wants policeto investigate the accuser andarrest her for filing a false po-lice report, according to TMZ.“If it’s true that someonemade false accusations againstMs. Lohan and reported thosefalse claims to police, we willtake appropriate action, which includes seeking theprosecution of thatindividual,” Lohan’s attorney

tells the website.

Cruz lovesmotherhoodWith a 1-year-old son at home,Penelope Cruz is starting toconsider cutting back on hercareer for the sake of mother-hood. “Maybe I’ll make onemovie a year, maybe two, butit’s not going to be more thanthat because I have other pri-orities now,” Cruz tells Harp-er’s Bazaar. “I talk about himall day long, even to strangersin the street. It is my favoritesubject! But, you know, this ismy job.” Cruz and husbandJaviar Bardem welcomed sonLeonardo last year.

Is the Seal/Klumdivorce getting ugly?

Seal is striking back at HeidiKlum, reportedly disputingher divorce petition, accord-ing to TMZ. The main issueshe takes with her filing? Sealinsists there are “communityand quasi-community assets”that need to be divided up,while Klum claims a postnup-tial agreement addresses that.In addition, Klum cites Jan. 19as the official start of their sep-aration, while Seal says thedate hasn’t been determined.Seal is also asking for jointphysical custody of their chil-dren instead of Klum’sproposed full physical custody.“Given that he’s away a lot ontour, giving her primary physi-cal custody is pretty much sta-tus quo,” the source says. Andboth parties are reportedlyasking to deny spousalsupport to the other.

Princess Di in a‘Bodyguard’ remake?Kevin Costner reveals therewere plans for a sequel to“The Bodyguard” — withPrincess Diana interested instarring as herself. “Dianaand I had been talking aboutdoing ‘Bodyguard 2,’”Costner tells Anderson Cooper in an interview set toair next month. “I told her Iwould take care of her justthe same way that I took careof Whitney [Houston].” Cost-ner was eager to work withher. “She wanted me to writeit for her. I said ‘I’ll tailor itfor you if you’re interested.’She goes, ‘I am interested,’”Costner remembers, reveal-ing that he received a draft ofthe script the day before Di-ana died.

As Effie Trinket, the escort whopreps the kids for “The HungerGames,” Elizabeth Banks is un-recognizable behind thickmakeup and some ridiculoushair and hats. The plucky vil-lainess talks to Metro about thefilm’s similarities to reality TV,and her thoughts on “TheJersey Shore.”

There’s more to Effie than justbeing a pink-haired villain. As acareer woman, she doesn’t havethe best gig.No, District 12 is terrible. Tome, Effie drank the Kool-Aid.She’s onboard because she’s in

the 1 percent and she doesn’twant to give that up. I think shethinks, “Revolution would bebad. People will die and I mightlose my cupcakes.” She’s notone for change. She likes thestatus quo. I think she showsup in District 12 disgusted, thinks that it’s dirty, wants togo home as fast as possible. Ithink of PR people and stylistsI’ve worked with who go,“Well, I’ll make the best of abad situation,” you know? AndI think that’s Effie. The mainthing about Effie is she’s super-selfish. It’s all about her. But she’s also thrilled to show

off the finer things in life to thekids.I think Effie’s main thing isshe’s ultimately a very opti-mistic and effervescent, theatri-cal person. That’s why she hasthe job that she has, becauseshe’s spinning the job she haspositively all the time. They’remost likely going to die, andshe’s seen a lot of kids die. So inher mind it’s like, “You won alottery ticket. We’re all going todie, but you’re going to go outfamous, with a big bang!”That’s Effie’s attitude aboutthese kids. They’re almost defi-nitely going to die, she’s pretty

sure of it. But they just won aticket to a great reality show. The book and the movie do agreat job of satirizing thataspect of our culture — realityTV. I don’t know how muchreality TV you watch ...I don’t mind the competitionshows where people actuallyhave a talent that they bring tobear on something, like

“Project Runway,” the chefones, “Idol,” “Voice,” “The XFactor.” But the message thatwe reward bad behavior — Ipersonally don’t believe thatthe 15 minutes of fame isworth your dignity. And I thinkthere are a few people thatcome to them with somethingto offer the world, and that’s alittle bit more interesting. But I

don’t watch “Jersey Shore.” Iknow people go, “I watch it be-cause it’s so crazy. I would nev-er do that.” But you’rewatching it and you’re givingthem ratings. You’re rewardingthem by watching it.

When we read aboutJennifer Lopez andher boyfriendCasper Smart, we

can sense some disapproval. Heis often referred to as her boytoy. The implication is that theyare not on the same level. Ifthis is the way the tabloids arehandling their coupling, youhave to wonder what herfriends might be saying to her.Are they concerned this is a re-bound relationship followingher divorce from Marc Antho-ny? Whether you are in a rela-tionship or just starting one, everyone is going to have anopinion — and typically it’sthat you are with the wrongperson. So who do you trust:you or the people who thinkthey know what’s best for you? What should you say to thosenaysayers?

In JLo’s case, there is noquestion that Casper hasn’tachieved the professional suc-cess she has. But does it matter? The answer is: only if it bothersher. It is important to knowwhen to go with what feelsright for you. This might be atime in her life when she wantsto lighten the mood a little, ormaybe she likes the age differ-ence. Or maybe he is muchmore her equal than any of usknow from where we stand.

If you can be clear aboutwhy you are with someone, itwill be much easier to dealwith the negative remarks thatmight otherwise ignite yourdoubts. Once you have thatclarity, you are equipped tohandle people’s criticismsabout your choice of partner.

Voter fraud: Real,or just a fraud?RE: “ACTUALLY, VOTER FRAUDALIVE AND WELL”: I agree verymuch with Mary Stone:Every voter should have ID.In fact, today every personthat’s legal should carry ID. Idon’t know what it is thatpeople have to fear, if youare not doing anythingwrong. On another note, ifwomen would stop dressinglike ladies, men would stopgroping them. That’s notsexy, and I know fashion.BLANCA HERNANDEZ, NEW YORK CITY

Mary Stone forgot to tell usthat there is no universallyaccepted definition of voterfraud. She forgot to tell usthat voter fraud is widely be-lieved to occur when an im-poster physically shows upat the polls and attempts to

vote, but this is extremelyrare. Ms. Stone also forgot totell us how difficult it is toget an ID card when youdon’t have a birth certificate. What else did she forget?HERB WHREN, VIA E-MAIL

In wake of voter ID suits, howhard is it to get an ID? Is it toomuch to ask that you shouldfeel the pain of dealing with agovernment you are votingfor? DAN HUBER, VIA E-MAIL

Mary Stone is a perfect exam-ple of someone who believeseverything she reads on theInternet. Half of the cases shementions have beencompletely debunked. Voterfraud is no more a factor inour elections than it has everbeen. As a percentage, prose-cutable cases of voter fraudexist 0.0007 percent of thetime. This is well within the

margin of error in every elec-tion. Voter ID laws remainwhat they have always been— a means to deny legalAmericans the right to vote. JD DUCAS, VIA E-MAIL

Must Mention

This Sunday marks Greek East-er, Greece’s most important re-ligious holiday. The holidaycomes after a 40-day fast, inwhich Greeks mainly give upmeat and oil — both major sta-ples of their cuisine.

So when they do break theirfast, it’s an all-day affair, withthe main meal of the day beingmeat — usually lamb — slow-roasted on a spit.

Luckily, you can partake ofthis tradition here in NewYork. “You appreciate it,” Niesesaid after watching Johan San-tana and Stephen Strasburgengage in a pitching duel yes-terday afternoon.

Santana took the loss inwhat would eventually be a 4-0win for the Nationals at CitiField. Strasburg earned hisfirst win of the season.

“They’re two great pitchersand it’s fun to watch themboth,” Niese said. “You defi-nitely learn from them. Youlearn how they attack hitters.”

Attack is the appropriateverb as Santana and Strasburgtook turns in an unspokengame of “Can you top this?”Santana struck out eight infive innings. His counterpartfinished with nine punchoutsin six innings.

“I like a lot what I see,”Mets manager Terry Collinssaid of Santana. “I’ve been veryhappy with Johan. I like whatwe see.”

The Mets searched forwords to adequately describethe 23-year-old Strasburg, whose upper-90s heat andmid-80s changeup causedthem to flail away.

“He commands three pitch-es. He throws everything forstrikes. He challenges [hit-

ters],” Santana said of Stras-burg. “He’s going to have [a lot]of games ahead of him and I’mpretty sure he’ll get better.”

“He’s good,” added JasonBay.

For Rangers Brian Boyle andBrandon Dubinsky, an earlyweek practice provided a mo-ment of glee in a season thathas been marked by frustrationfor both.

Dubinsky controlled thepuck on the wing as Boyle boredown on Henrik Lundqvist. Aquick, accurate pass connecteda split second before Boyle’ssnap shot beat Lundqvist high, popping the goaltender’s waterbottle from its perch atop thegoal. Dubinsky’s excited shriekfilled the rink as he envelopedhis centerman in a celebratoryembrace.

When asked if he and hislinemate enjoy scoring onLundqvist, Boyle responded“Yeah, always.”

Individually, the playoffs of-fer Boyle and Dubinsky the op-portunity to redeem them-selves from regular seasons

that were not what either envi-sioned.

“Towards the end [of the sea-son] if you look at where wescored, it was really close, around the net,” Boyle said.

“That’s kind of the way we’regoing to have to go in, especial-ly for the playoffs.”
