It’s rare these days to see aPhiladelphia music act teeter-ing on the brink of superstar-dom; rarer still that they are aDrexel-educated hip-hop duowho sample songs by SufjanStevens and Kate Nash.

Rapper Chidera “Chiddy”Anamege — who with produc-er Noah “Xaphoon” Jonescomprises Chiddy Bang —says only in Philly would sucha phenomenon be possible.

“Philly definitely was agreat starting point for us be-cause there’s a lot of musicalinfluences around,” Anamegesaid on the phone Mondayfrom the dressing room at Co-nan O’Brien. “That’s whatPhiladelphia is — a melting potof a lot of different sounds.”

Chiddy Bang was borne outof Drexel University, whereprolific freestyler Anamegemet Jones, a former intern at

the Clef Club and student ofthe school’s much-lauded mu-sic industry program. “I hadnever heard of MGMT or any ofthose bands, I just come from astraight hip-hop background,”Anamege said. “Noah takes thethings we sample and putsthem in a different context.”

The group’s signature com-bination of streetwise rap overindustry-savvy samples caughton quickly in the college

scene. “All the schools in thecity of Philadelphia, that defi-nitely helped,” Anamege said.

The group signed withEMI’s U.K.-based Parlophoneimprint in 2010 with plans torelease a 2011 album, but theachievement brought chal-lenges. “Once we signed, webecame aware of a totally dif-ferent worldview where youcan’t put out music for free be-cause you’re trying to makemoney off of it,” Jones said.

Despite the sometimesrocky road, Chiddy Bang re-leased their major label debut,“Breakfast,” last Tuesday, andit skyrocketed to No. 4 oniTunes’ top 10 chart. A year af-ter their first show at Swarth-more College, they sold outSouth Street’s Theater of theLiving Arts.

‘Frat rap’?‘Hipster hop’?PHILADELPHIA. With all of themusical baggage each mem-ber totes, Chiddy Bang’ssound is hard to define.Drawing a wide audience, from indie-loving hipsters tohard-core hip-hop fans, the

genre has been described as“alternative hip-hop,” “fratrap,” and “hipster hop.”

“I’d say we definitelyhave one foot in hip-hopworld and one foot in thepop world,” Jones said. “Andone in the alternative elec-tronic world.”

“We call it space rap fromthe future,” Anamege said.

“We’re the type of dudeswho spontaneously makemusic and we can sampleanything from any genre —we don’t really care. I thinkthat’s why you can’t reallyput your finger on what wedo because we doeverything.”

“That’s the Philadelphiainfluence.” METRO

Long live Philly

Their time in Philly was in-strumental in their develop-ment and at least onemember plans to one day re-turn for good. Here’s quicklooks at their present, pastand future related to the city:

Though they currently live anomadic lifestyle, embarkingon a whirlwind tour in thestates and abroad, both mu-sicians say Philadelphia is es-pecially significant.“To me, Philly is dope. I feellike when we came into thissituation when we first wentto Drexel the timing was per-

fect,” Anamege said. “Thetime that we started choppingup those samples, nobodywas doing that stuff. We fig-ured out a lane for ourselvesand just had to carve it.”Jones, who recently gave uphis South Philadelphia lease, hopes to one day retire inthe city.

Confused about taxes?Philly taxpayers not sure

Large majority doesn’t like how much in local taxes they pay Nearlyhalf polled would pay more for better services Not sugar tax, howeverSeven out of 10 Philadelphiaresidents are concerned aboutthe overall tax burden, butmany would not mind payingmore for increased services, according to a poll releasedyesterday.

The study from the PewCharitable Trusts’ PhiladelphiaResearch Initiative reveals that70 percent of city residents callhigh taxes a “somewhat seri-ous” or “very serious” problemin their neighborhoods, upfrom 62 percent last year and55 percent in 2010.

Fifty-four percent say theypay too much for the level ofservice they receive, while 39percent claim they get their“money’s worth” or a “gooddeal” for their tax dollars.

At the same time, 49 per-cent of respondents said theywould prefer more govern-ment services and higher tax-es, with 42 percent opting forlower taxes and fewer services.

“It’s a mixed message, andit suggests if you can persuadepeople they’re actually goingto get more they might bewilling to pay more,” said Lar-ry Eichel, PRI project director.“But that’s a high bar to provethat you’re going to be able toprovide more.”

Comcast says it has met — andin many cases exceeded — theconditions set as part of its$13.8 billion merger with NBCUniversal in January 2011, thecompany said in a one-year an-niversary compliance reportfiled yesterday with the FederalCommunication Commission.

“Our commitments and theconditions, though extensive, have been incorporated intoour business activities and be-come part of the company’s‘DNA,’” wrote Comcast Execu-tive Vice President David Co-hen in a blog post about the re-port on Comcast’s website.

“The substantial public in-terest benefits promised by thetransaction and the competi-tive safeguards sought by theFCC are being realized,” Cohenwrote.

Comcast is required to filecompliance reports every yearfor seven years. The FCC is notrequired to respond or take ac-tion, unless a third partyshould complain to the com-mission that Comcast is not, infact, meeting its requirements.

Many of the FCC conditionssought to maintain fair compe-tition, to ensure the newlyformed company would allowaccess to its vast library of filmsand television from both Uni-versal and NBC. Comcastagreed to forgo its manage-ment slice of the video-sharingsite Hulu, which NBC had man-aged along with Fox and ABC.

It also called upon the newcompany to maintain and ex-pand local news and to aug-ment diverse programmingchoices, as well as and minorityownership opportunities.

The GOP presidential race is still anyone’s game. Probably.

We’ve been gonefor a little whileand boy has awhole lotchanged. Re-

publican presidential candi-date Mitt Romney is consid-ered the front-runner of a raceno one seems particularly ex-cited about finishing. In a clas-sic case of Romneying, thewell-to-do politician explainedto NASCAR afficionados thathe, too, enjoys the popularSouthern pastime — especial-ly considering that several ofhis friends own teams! AndRestore Our Future, the superPAC backing Romney, has un-leashed a torrent of negativeads attacking his current clos-est contender, Rick Santorum, who until rather recently wasactually leading in a series ofnationwide polls.

What a world of differencea week and a half can make!

Well, the whole narrativemay — but most probablywon’t — change today whenwith any luck the winner(s) ofyesterday’s two qualifyingcontests, in Michigan and Ari-zona, are announced. The re-sults are expected to arrive toolate for us to do any substan-

tial analysis today; we’ll savethat for tomorrow, and leavethe guesswork to the experts.

Experts such as poll analystNate Silver, who thinks Michi-gan — Romney’s home state, though one he’s antagonizedby strongly opposing Obama-led auto bailouts that seem tohave led to a strengthened lo-cal industry and the saving ofmillions of jobs — could go ei-ther way. Most polls, mean-while, show Arizona leaningstrongly in Romney’s favor.

Regardless of whowins, though, thecampaign environ-ment isn’t likely toundergo a drastic

change. Will an unrealisticdouble-rout by Santorum com-pel Romney to cede the race tohis rival? Not likely. Nor willthe more plausible doubleRomney win convince Santo-rum et al that they’ve missedtheir chance. Ron Paul is stillplaying the long game, hopingto pick up enough consolationdelegates to buy some moreestablishment support for hislibertarian ideas. And thenthere’s Gingrich: Educatedguessing on the future inten-tions of that guy likely eludeseven experts like Silver.

With Super Tuesday a weekaway, we may yet be on thecusp of some serious politicalmomentum; if, that is, votersagree enough to elevate a sin-gle candidate. If not, a bro-kered convention may be onthe horizon — a looming pos-sibility that could, perhaps, beone GOP mystery more un-fathomable than even Gin-grich himself.

2After showing up to the Acade-my Awards sporting suspiciousrings, it seems that NataliePortman and BenjaminMillepied did, indeed, get mar-ried without telling us. JewelerJamie Wolf confirms that thecouple — who met on the set of“Black Swan” and have a son to-gether — created the weddingbands.

“I designed the rings wornby Benjamin Millepied and Na-talie Portman,” Wolf told Us-Magazine.com. “They weremade with recycled platinumand conflict-free diamonds.”

Their eco-friendly jewelerleaked the news? This, friends,is what we call a rich personproblem.

Jolie’s Oscar legexplainedAfter we had time to processAngelina Jolie’s display of awhole lot of right leg at the Os-cars, we moved on to roundtwo: finding answers. (At leastwe think this is round two —there aren’t a whole lot ofguidelines here.) Naturally, anunnamed source who is “closeto her” was happy to speculate

about the pose toPerezhilton.com. “Angie wasvamping it up, no more, noth-ing less,” says the source. “Shewas having fun, living in themoment, like she always does. She is absolutely oblivious tothe controversy and attentionthe sexy pose has created.”

This is what we were afraidof. There’s no joke, no silly betwith George Clooney and Brad

Pitt, no extra cocktail to blame:She thought this was sexy.

Angelina Jolie, you are An-gelina Jolie, undisputed andsupreme Hollywood sex sym-bol. Sticking your bare leg outon stage is the equivalent ofChris Rock getting up there andtelling recycled “Two and a HalfMen” jokes. You’re better thanthis — or, at least, hotter thanthis.

More secret weddingnews: Biel andTimberlakeJessica Biel and Justin Timber-lake are trying to keep their en-gagement quiet, but theirfriends and family aren’t reallyhelping. First, Timberlake’sgrandmother spilled the beansabout the singer’s proposal, and now Biel’s “New Year’s Eve”

director, Garry Marshall, isgushing about their renewedromance. “We talk about it alot. I hope it all works out. Theyare terrific kids,” Marshall tellsUs Weekly. “I love them both.I’m happy for her.”

Young claims she’s innocent“Blade Runner” star Sean Youngwas arrested after trying tosneak into the post-Oscars Gov-ernors Ball, according to TMZ.The actress, who recentlyappeared on “Celebrity Rehab

with Dr. Drew,” made it into theparty initially and hobnobbedwith the likes of Brad Pitt andAngelina Jolie before beingasked to leave, as she didn’thave a ticket for the event.Sources say she then tried to getback into the party, leading toan altercation with security per-sonnel. Young was booked on amisdemeanor battery charge.

Baby on the way for ThurmanUma Thurman is expecting ababy with financier Arpad Bus-

son, her rep confirms to Peoplemagazine. And while theactress wasn’t necessarily readyto talk about her pregnancy, herfriends were more than happyto. “Yes, Uma is pregnant,” aThurman pal tells Life & Style.“She hasn’t announced it yet,but a lot of her friends were ask-ing her because they could tellthe difference when they sawher at New York Fashion Week. She’s usually so skinny, but nowshe has the cutest little bumpand a glow about her.” Thurmanalso has two children with ex-husband Ethan Hawke.

Say hello to thenew ‘Dancingwith the Stars’ castWe don’t really remember halfof these people either, so here’sa helpful little cheat sheet.

1. Melissa Gilbert: The former“Little House on the Prairie”star (and sister to Sara Gilbert,a host on “The Talk”), returnsto ABC after she directed thenetwork’s after school special,“Me and My Hormones.” Yup,that is true. She’ll join tabloidstar/pro dancer MaksimChmerkovskiy.

2. Sherri Shepherd: We’re a lit-tle curious about how Shepherdwill manage her time betweenthis show, rehearsals and hergig as a co-host on “The View,”but hey, the gal must really loveher ABC. She dances with ValChmerkovskiy (and no, that’snot a coincidental last name: Hisbrother is Maksim).

3. Martina Navratilova:Navratilova is the only tennisplayer in the world who haswon Grand Slam titles in fourdifferent decades. The breastcancer survivor has won 59Grand Slam titles, nine Wimble-don singles championships and344 tournaments. She’s pairedwith Tony Dovolani.

4. Maria Menounos: Theactress, author and TV host hasa pretty beefy résumé: At 22,she was the youngest person tohost “Entertainment Tonight,”and she also conducted the onlyinterview with the Obama fami-ly during the presidential cam-paign. She dances alongsideDerek Hough.

5. Gladys Knight: The diva ofsoul needs no introduction:She’s won eightGrammys during herillustrious career andhas recorded morethan 38 albums. Shewas most recentlyseen in the TylerPerry film “I Can

Do Bad All By Myself.” Knight ispaired with Tristan MacManus.6. Jaleel White: Before therewas Zooey Deschanel, the mostadorkable person on TV wasSteve Urkel. White returns tonetwork television after stintson “Boston Legal,” “House” andthe feature film “Dreamgirls.”He’ll be dancing with two-time champ KymJohnson.

7. DonaldDriver: Pack-ers’ fans willknow Driveras a SuperBowl champand theAll-

9. Gavin Degraw: Unfor-tunately, the last we heard

of the “I Don’t Wanna Be”singer, he was getting beat up

by thugs in New York City’s EastVillage. He’s back in the newsfor a better reason now, danc-ing with last season’s winner,Karina Smirnoff.

10. Jack Wagner: You might re-member him from his days on“General Hospital” and

“Melrose Place.” Or you mightrecognize him as HeatherLocklear’s fiance (until Novem-ber 2011, at least). He danceswith Anna Trebunskaya.

Jennifer Aniston’s character in“Wanderlust” runs away fromthe modern life she and herhusband (played by Paul Rudd) share to live in aUtopian, free-love commune inrural Georgia. The actress ad-mits the impulse to disappearisn’t all that unfamiliar. “Everyday, yes,” she says of feelingthat way. “I mean, for me, go-ing to Clarksville [Georgia] andshooting this movie was a ver-sion of that, honestly, becausethere were no paparazzi andthere [were] no secret littletricky cell phone pictures beingtaken. It was just this great

community and these amazingpeople.”

Maybe getting into the hip-pie spirit of the film helped, but Aniston says she ended uplearning a lot about herself justby the change of environment.“I really realized how walled Iwas, and not consciously so,but just this armor that I kindof have, protective armor from— not my friends or people inmy family — but just being out-side in the world,” she says.“There’s this sigh of relief afterWeek 1 just knowing, ‘Oh thisis like John Travolta in “The Boyin the Bubble.”’ It was like, rid-

ing on a horse, out of the bub-ble!”

The image she’s conjured re-duces her to a fit of laughter, but there was a serious sense ofself-improvement for Anistonto take away from the “Wan-derlust” production. “It wasspecial, it was really special ...to kind of get back in touchwith that part of myself andthat anonymity,” she says. “I re-ally made a conscious effort toknow, ‘Don’t wall up like that.’”

If she did run away from herlife as an actress, what wouldthe “Wanderlust” star do instead?

“Well, there was the periodwhere I wanted to be a thera-pist if the acting thing didn’twork,” she says. “I don’t knowwhy, I just liked talking to peo-ple. I was always the girl thatpeople would come to andtalk about their problems. Still am.”

TV watch listDon’t fear the stylus comebackThere’s a trend in smartphones, and some might call it disturb-ing. Hand-in-hand with the re-cent surge of phones with gi-gantic screens comes a surprisevisitor, poking its way out of thetechnological past to stab at ushere in the present: the stylus.

First there was the SamsungGalaxy Note, a phone with amassive, 5-inch screen and apull-out stylus called the S Pen.Now, straight from the MobileWorld Congress show inBarcelona, LG just debuted itsanswer to the Note, the Opti-mus Vu, another 5-inch phonethat sports a stylus. Tablets aregetting in on the action, too:The Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1rocks an S Pen, and the newPadFone from Asus has a stylusthat also doubles as a Bluetoothheadset!

One phone that includes astylus is an odd throwback. But

four devices — that’s a clearpattern, one that is rubbingmany people the wrong way.Commentators from Comput-erworld to Wired have allchimed in to point out whatan anachronistic addition astylus is to a modern smart-

phone. It’s also the wrong atti-tude. It still has a place intechnology.

So why would anyone wantto go back to the using an ac-cessory when phones haveevolved enough to be instantlysensitive to finger touches?Simple answer: accuracy.

“I like it for its precision,”says technologist AdrianCalderon. “Even working on aniPhone, I can often tap with mystylus much faster than I cantype with my finger.”

The stylus lets Calderondraw with more care in appslike SketchBook; but whenthe hardware is matched tothe stylus, there’s even morepotential to unlock.

Roberto Cavalli

1With the Oscars overlappingits Fashion Week, Milan has

been surprisingly light oncelebrities. But Roberto Cavallimade up for it by closing outItaly’s shows with none otherthan one of fashion’s starriestmodels, Naomi Campbell. It wasan appropriate ending for ashow filled with flamboyantlyopulent clothes for the biggestdivas — fur-trimmed T-shirtsover leggy python bell bottoms, massive fur ball gown skirts withgraphic silk blouses and sweep-ing animal-print, chiffon dressesunder tough leather jackets. Each look was richer and moredramatic than the next.

Jil Sander

2“You can never leave withoutleaving a piece of you,” Billy

Corgan sang as the modelswalked. It’s a testament to howRaf Simons made the label hisown that the overall sadness

about his leaving Jil Sanderseemed to overshadow any buzzor excitement about the founderreturning to her namesakebrand. News that theAutumn/Winter ’12 collectionwould be Simons’ last instantlymade the show the week’shottest ticket. And afterward, people talked about it with an “Iwas there” type of reverence. The sentimentality of it all couldhave easily eclipsed the clothes,if they weren’t so sublime. Forone, Simons worked with color, specifically romantic shades ofred and soft pastels that gavesome much-needed contrast toall the moody black and charcoalwe’ve seen this week. He alsocontinued the outerwear storythat has been dominating Milan, but with an elegant touch — andthankfully not a dip-dyed fursleeve in sight. His coats andcorseted dresses came in volumi-nous shapes that evolved fromthe full skirts and dresses heshowed for spring. The clotheswere a continuation and yet adefinitive end — at least for thehouse of Jil Sander. In the mean-time, we hope the rumors thathe’ll take the reins at ChristianDior are true. KENYA HUNT

While eating disorders arereadily associated with anorex-ic girls supposedly wanting tobe model-thin, the reality is farmore complex than femininevanity.

“There are many types ofeating disorders,” says Dr.Gregg Jantz, founder of A Placeof Hope, an eating disordertreatment center, and the au-thor of “Hope, Help, and Heal-ing for Eating Disorders.” “Forexample, there’s binge eatingand food addiction. An eatingdisorder is a chronic faulty rela-tionship with food that con-

trols one’s life.”Behavior includes binging

and purging, starvation, laxa-tive abuse and compulsiveovereating; but Dr. Jantz warnsthat these are all symptoms, not the problem. A complexrange of psychological and/oremotional conditions are be-hind eating disorders, includ-ing feelings of inadequacy, de-pression, anxiety and loneli-ness. Troubled relationshipswith family, friends or workcolleagues may all play a part.According to Dr. Jantz, younggirls and women age 13 to 30

are most at risk, with about 5percent of eating disorders oc-curring in males.

Eating disorders can be trig-gered by a single traumaticevent, such as death, divorce orrape — or a degrading com-ment. They can also take longerto develop, building as traumat-ic experiences mount up. Fo-cusing on food gives relief tounaddressed emotional pain, until it spirals out of control.

“It becomes an addiction be-cause it controls you despitemany attempts to quit,” Dr.Jantz says.

And though sufferers canexhibit considerable shameabout their condition, the stig-ma is being reduced. Public fig-ures like Lady Gaga and EltonJohn have come forward abouttheir bouts bulimia, and theNational Eating DisordersAwareness Week — currentlyunderway now — seeks to edu-cate the public.

“It makes it safer to gethelp,” says Dr. Jantz. “You real-ize you’re not alone.”

Burress talking Birds, says Vick can win it allPlaxico Burress still wants to bea Philadelphia Eagle.

The soon-to-be free agentwide receiver was a guest on97.5 The Fanatic yesterday andmaintained his stance from ayear ago. Remember, Burresswore a Phillies cap as he greetedthe media after being releasedfrom a two-year prison sentence.

“Hey, man, nothing elsewould make me happier,” Bur-ress said of playing here. “Com-

ing to Philadelphia and institut-ing myself to the offense, it justadds a unique dynamic to what’salready in place.”

Burress admitted that the Ea-gles showed a lot of interest lastoffseason, keeping in touch daysbefore he signed with the NewYork Jets for $3 million. Burressgrew up in the same part of Vir-ginia as Mike Vick and talks tothe quarterback a few times aweek.

“I really believe he can bringa championship to Philadelphia, and I’d love to be part of that,”Burress said. “Coming fromwhat we’ve come from, I justthink it would be a special deal,”

The 34-year-old needed a fewgames to get back into footballshape last year, but still finishedwith a respectable 45 catches for612 yards and eight touchdowns— seven of those TDs came inthe red zone. The Eagles ranked

14th in the NFL in the red zonein 2011.

The Jets haven’t ruled outbringing Burress back, but he isscheduled to become a freeagent on March 13. And Burressis sure he can improve on lastseason’s numbers.

“Going into this year, I’m go-ing to be a lot stronger,” Burresssaid. “I think this year comingup, I’m going to be like my oldself.” METRO

+ To entice the environ-mentalists, WeccacoeFlats in Queen Villagewill include a long list of

green features, from hybrid wa-ter heaters to dual flush toilets. For the decadent, the three-sto-ry building will have an eleva-tor that opens directly intoeach full-floor unit.

“Sure, you can say ‘howgreen is an elevator in a three-story structure’? But from asales standpoint, it’s just not asspectacular if you have to walkup the stairs,” says developerScott Seibert.

Seibert and his brother, G.C.Seibert, do have some greencred. Their first multifamilyproject, Bancroft Green in GradHospital, snagged a NAHB’sModular Home Green Building

award and, like Weccacoe Flats, was designed by green archi-tect firm Re:Vision.

Weccacoe (a Lenni Lenapeword pronounced “wheh-ka-ko,” Seibert says) is modular, too: The units will be built in-doors, then transported out tothe site at Fifth and Queenstreets and assembled.

Modular construction is typ-

ically much faster because mul-tiple elements of the buildingcan be created simultaneously— all while the site itself is be-ing prepped. The catch isthere’s no room for last-minutetweaks.

“Once you start building, you can’t really change any-thing without throwing a mon-key wrench into the wholemix,” Seibert says.

That means early Weccacoebuyers will have some say infixtures and finishes; if you buylater, you’ll have to take it as is.Of course, with 2,000 squarefeet, Bosch appliances andbamboo floors, “as is” isn’tlooking so bad.

The luxurious Weccacoe Flats in Queen Village will have plenty

of environment-friendly amenities But they’re not skimping on plush extras — or the elevators
