Minutes from Parish Council meeting December 21, 2011
Council meeting attendees were: Father Bill, Karen Dreitlein, Pat Jackson,
Paul Johnson, Jerry Russo and Valerie Mitreuter
Meeting was called to order by Jerry Russo at 7:30 PM
Opening Prayer - Valerie Mitreuter
Open discussion:
High school youth group has participated in an few service project at St John, and for St
Joseph’s
The current youth group leader celebrated her one year anniversary
Youth group masses have been well attended and will continue.
Church issues:
50/50 - Congratulations to the “Super” 50/50 winner. The Parish share of the prize will be
used for necessary repairs to sidewalks next to the school and entrance to the Parish
Hall. Our thanks to Debbie and Jim Johnson.
Mass attendance – While the number of attendees at mass stayed pretty much the same
our collections down about $30,000 since July.
We have been advised that the church and school are being sued by an individual who
alleges he was molested by the former priest Father Capparelli while he was stationed at
Our Lady of Peace from 1982 to 1986.
Interrogatories have been completed and forwarded to attorneys for the plaintive and the
archdioceses.
Solar Power - The parish was approached by a consortium to allow us to use our
facilities as a solar panel “farm” to generate electricity. Our facility represents an
excellent opportunity for installation of these panels on the roofs on the school, gym and
parish hall.
Since the design of these buildings provide a “parapet” above the roofs the panels will
be hidden.
There will be no cost to the parish and we will benefit by a 50% reduction in our
electricity costs.
Closing prayer Father Bill
Meeting was closed at 9:15 P.M.

The Academy of OLP Robotics Team Wins Again at State Finals
The Academy of Our Lady of Peace Robotics Team won the Second Place Presentation
Award at the First Lego League (“FLL”) Robotics State Finals. FLL Robotics is a global
competition wherein each team must research and solve a current real-world issue. This
year the challenge was related to food safety. Each team must also assemble and
program a robot which completes many designated tasks in the competition.
The Academy Robotics team, “Panther Power,” studied and researched food safety and
contamination issues, ultimately focusing on an American favorite – the apple. They
spent countless hours conducting experiments and discussing the causes of food
contamination as well as possible solutions. They proposed a simple, effective tool to
reduce contamination of apples before they reach the consumer. To further their goal of
helping food distributors remove pesticides and other toxins from apples prior to sale,
they shared their invention with local supermarkets.
At the FLL Regional Competition in Clifton, Panther Power presented its research and
innovative solution to a panel of judges. They were awarded First Place for Core Values,
recognizing their teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills. The Panther
Power Team was among the top competitors and was invited to compete at the State
Finals, as it has every year since The Academy’s Robotics program began four years ago.
On Saturday December 10th
, Panther Power competed against the top 48 teams in New
Jersey at the FLL Robotics State Finals. The team performed well and achieved
impressive scores from the judges. Panther Power won The Second Place Project and
Research Award, recognizing the team’s clear, informative and creative presentation of
its research and innovative solution. Also, Panther Power mentor, Dr. Gail Seelig, was
awarded the Mentor Award, recognizing her commitment and dedication to the students’
exploration of science. The Academy of Our Lady of Peace and the community of New
Providence are very proud of its students and congratulate Panther Power, Coach Mrs.
Alys Tyler and Mentor Dr. Gail Seelig on their impressive performance and well-
deserved awards at the State Finals.
The Academy of Our Lady of Peace is a private Catholic School located in downtown
