Dr. Michael chipps was named the new president

of Northeast Community College. Chipps had been

president of Mid-Plains Community College in North

Platte. He became the eighth president to lead North-

east and its predecessor institutions, succeeding Dr.

Bill Path, who left after 10 years at Northeast to take a

position as president of the Oklahoma State University

The late Max and Edith Puschendorf built the ballroom on 40 acres of riverfront property they purchased in the 1930s. The couple built the bar in 1936 and added the ball-room three years later.

February 11, 2012 norfolk fire and Rescue — including City Admin-istrator Shane Weidner — work on transporting gun-shot victim Edna Gutierrez, also known as Edna Little Elk, out of a home at 706 S. Third St. She was flown by medical helicopter to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where she underwent surgery after being shot in the head. After more than two days on the lam, Carlos Alfredo Arevalo-Martinez was ar-rested and charged with first-degree assault and use of a firearm to commit a felony.

howells wrestler Eric Coufal (photo at right) became one of 19 all-time wrestlers to win four individual titles — and only the third to go unbeaten his entire high school career — at the Nebraska High School State Wrestling Championships in Omaha. After a grueling 4-2 decision over Issac Elge of Nebraska Christian, the Howells senior ended the season 44-0 and finished his career at 168-0.

the new Johnny carson billboard welcomes motorists driving north on Highway

81 into Norfolk and is located on the west side of the highway near Wis-Pak. The bill-

board south of Norfolk once was one of several that welcomed visitors to the city with

Johnny Carson’s likeness. Now, only one remains and it had been numerous years

since it first was erected. Weather and time had taken their toll on the appearance of

the billboard.

Her artwork was among 500 pieces from across the country selected for the honor by the online student art gallery Artsonia.com. Hail formed drifts, then intense rain washed the drifts down streets.

A tornAdo damaged a farm home owned by Bryan and Jenny Herchenbach

about 2½ miles northwest of Cornlea. Here, a day after the tornado hit, Jenny

Herchenbach looks over what was once her kitchen in the home, which was built

3½ years ago. “We’re just so grateful that we’re all safe,” Jenny Herchenbach

said. “The things that can’t be replaced are all OK.”

railroad bridge that was lifted from the river, sold for scrap and re-

placed by this new free-span bridge. The bridge reopened in June.

ConstruCtion was done in six phases in adding a third lane to 25th Street. A turning lane was added to the two lanes between Benjamin Avenue and Highway 275. Other improvements included new sidewalks and bike trail and a new bridge at Skyview Park. And that bump on Norfolk Avenue was smoothed out, too. The road reopened to traffic in mid-December.

the mantle as one of the GOP’s best hopes for picking up a U.S. Sen-

There was no question that those in atten-dance at the Eric Church concert at the Mad-ison County Fair enjoyed themselves. People started lining up 14 hours before the sold-out concert.

Jeremy Scott achieved his Olympic dream, but he

missed out on winning a medal. By the narrowest of

margins, the 1999 Norfolk High graduate came one

spot shy of making the Olympic finals in the pole

vault in London.

Hooper native Jordan Larson was

one of four Olympians with Nebraska

connections to bring home medals

from London. Larson and the U.S.

women’s volleyball team won a silver

medal. Former Husker wrestler Jordan

Burroughs (below) won a gold medal,

and former Husker soccer players

Karina Leblanc and Brittany Timko

won bronze for Canada.

About 30,000 fairgoers paid $3 to ride the Sky Tram, the fair’s big new attraction. The 40-foot-high tram afforded a bird’s-eye view of the 225-acre, $40 million fairgrounds.

Flames shoot from the door and windows of

the laundry room of the Budget Inn, 721 E. Nor-

folk Ave., after a fire broke out there and caused

the hotel’s occupants to be evacuated. Firefight-

ers said flammable materials had been placed

close to a heat source, which caused the fire to

start.

Nebraska CoaCh Bo Pelini and former coach and athlet-ic director Tom Osborne lead the team onto the field prior to the Huskers’ final home game against the Minnesota Golden Gophers in Lincoln. The game was the 500th in which Osborne served in an official capacity of the univer-sity. Osborne is retiring as of Jan. 1 and will be succeeded by Shawn Eichorst. November 17, 2012

a memorial service to the U.S. Bank victims. Colson is the brother

of Lola Elwood, a bank employee who was murdered at the Nor-

folk bank 10 years ago. Also killed in the shootings were Samuel

Sun, Jo Mausbach and Lisa Bryant, all bank employees, as well

as Evonne Tuttle, a customer.

sydNey roeN-Feldt of Norfolk helped lead the Norfolk High girls golf team to a state title by finish-ing second at the Class A girls state golf tournament with rounds of 83 and 84 (167) at the Norfolk Coun-try Club. The state title was the third for the girls golf program at Norfolk High.
