“We at Winthrop encourage excellence in all endeavors, both in the classroom and in the playing arena.”

Winthrop President Anthony DiGiorgio and First Lady Gale

Now in his 23rd year as president of Winthrop University, Dr. Anthony J. DiGiorgio believes that attaining excellence requires three things:• caring more than some might think is wise,• risking more than some might think is safe, and• dreaming more than some might think is practical.

That approach has resulted in Dr. DiGiorgio now being the longest- serving president of any public university in South Carolina, while Winthrop University has grown from a regional college with a venerable history to a national-caliber compre-hensive university that helps set the pace for quality higher education. Today, Winthrop University is regularly rated among the top public institutions of its kind in the South by U.S. News and World Report, winning accolades for: academic excellence emphasis on students’ personal character development commitment to diversity award-winning student programming sound fi scal management, and overall institutional excellence.

National publications, including Barron’s Best Buys and The Princeton Review, also rate Winthrop University among the “best buy, best value” institutions in the nation. U.S. News and World Report in 2010 also named Winthrop to its “Keep An Eye On These Schools” list of institutions that have recently made “the most promising and innovative changes in academics, faculty, students, campus or facilities.” Some of the University’s notable accomplishments during Dr. DiGiorgio’s tenure include: the designation change from Winthrop College to Win- throp University in 1992; Winthrop’s fi rst capital campaign, which raised $31.2 mil-

lion for scholarships, academic program enhancements and more faculty development and research opportun- ities; more than $120 million in capital building projects that have adapted the University’s historic campus to contem- porary needs, including a new Life Sciences Building; The Courtyard residence hall; Owens Hall, a general use academic building; the West Center for Health, Physical Education and Wellness; Carroll Hall, an academic facil- ity for the College of Business Administration, the Culp Chiller Plant. and the DiGiorgio Campus Center, named for President DiGiorgio and his wife, Gale. Dr. DiGiorgio began his presidency by articulating a “Vision of Distinction” for Winthrop, then leading the university community in designing a series of annual work plans that advance the goals encompassed by the vision. Each new year’s work plan builds on the foundation of the previous year’s achievements. DiGiorgio likens it to a family’s achievements, with each new generation building on the foundation of its elders — an observation drawn from his own youth. The son of an immigrant bricklayer, Dr. DiGiorgio was born in Sharon, Pa. Like many immigrants to America, the DiGiorgios found that hard work and persistence were the keys to survival – key elements that characterize the DiGiorgio leadership style today. After receiving his undergraduate degree at Gannon Col-lege, Dr. DiGiorgio earned his master’s and doctoral degrees from Purdue University, where he later became an instructor and Assistant to the Dean of Humanities, Social Science and Education. In 1970, he began 19 years of service at The Col-lege of New Jersey, where he served in a number of positions, including Vice President for Academic Affairs. Dr. DiGiorgio has served two terms on the board of direc-tors of the NCAA Board and its executive committee, as well as two terms as president of the Big South Conference, He currently chairs the Membership Committee. In addition, he has served on the board of directors of the Charlotte branch of the Federal Reserve Bank, Richmond District, and in 2009-2010 began a second term on the board of the Charlotte Regional Partnership, a regional economic development organization serving 2.5 million people in both Carolinas.

As part of the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program, the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) was formed to hear the “voice” of student-athletes, help provide feedback to the Coordinator and allow student-athletes a voice in certain policies and events pertaining to them.

Student-Athlete Advisory Council The Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) is a representative body of every varsity sport at Winthrop University. The Council is student-athlete led. Representatives of each athletic team work with the CHAMPS/Life Skills Coordinator to oversee the program and make sure the program is meeting the needs of the Winthrop University student-athletes. Kevin Pendley, a former golf standout at Winthrop, is entering his sixth season as the head men’s golf coach. He replaced former longtime golf coach Eddie Wel-don, who retired following the 2006 season. Pendley, a native of Greenwood, SC, was the Big South's fi rst two-time Men's Golfer of the Year and Indi-vidual Medalist in 1997 and 1998. He also was the con-ference's third-ever four-time All-Conference performer (1995, 1996, 1997, 1998), along with former Eagle Paul Tomlinson, and is now just one of six men's golfers in league history with this distinction. Pendley also earned Big South Rookie of the Year recognition in 1995. He carded a 6-under 210 (69-69-72) in his 1998 Big South Conference Championship victory, which was the fi fth-lowest at the time and remains tied for the ninth-low-est individual score in conference championship history. Pendley helped Winthrop to a runner-up fi nish in the 1997 Big South Championship, which is tied for the squad's best fi nish for the conference championship in program history, and was a member of the 1996 Eagles squad that set a school record for lowest 36-hole score of 571 at Old Dominion’s Seascape Collegiate, a record that stood for seven years. In only his fi fth tournament as Winthrop’s coach, his team broke the 36-hole record by four strokes on the same course where Pendley and his teammates set the record seven years prior. He also has the most tournament victories in Eagle history with fi ve

Pendley later played professionally for seven years, including the NGA Hooters Tour in 1998, 1999 and 2002, and the Buy.com Tour in 2000 and 2001. He ranked third on the NGA Hooters Tour money list in 2002. After playing on the Hooters Tour and Buy.com Tour, Pendley played on the Nationwide Tour in 2003 and 2004, with his best career fi nish on the Nationwide Tour came at the 2001 Mark Christopher Charity Classic in Rancho Cucamonga, CA where he tied for fourth. Pendley had fi ve career top 10 fi nishes on the Nationwide Tour. His lone professional victory Pendley came on the NGA Hooters Tour in 2002 at the Louisiana Classic in Monroe, LA. Pendley concluded his professional career with fi ve Top 10 fi nishes. He left the professional tour in 2005 to work for Cherokee National Life Insurance as a South Carolina service representative. During his six-year tenure as head coach of the men’s golf team, Pendley has coached four All-Confer-ence performers in Brent Martin (2007) and Kamito Hirai (2010, 2011) and Brandon Truesdale (2011). He has also had one Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year in Pete

Alminas, who received the award in 2008, and his 2010 squad received the Big South Team Sportsmanship Award. He was inducted into the 2008 Win-throp Athletics Hall of Fame and the Big South Conference Hall of Fame in 2010. Pendley and his wife, Krista, are the parents of one son, Landon, 4.

Season OutlookSeason Outlook

Eagles’ Season Goals Attainable Entering Eagles’ Season Goals Attainable Entering 2011-12 Campaign2011-12 Campaign

Winthrop head coach Kevin Pendley enters his sixth season with the men’s golf program, and is very excited about his 2011-12 squad after a solid fall sea-son on the golf course. “I am looking forward to seeing our guys compete this year,” he said. “We had some very good moments and some not so good moments, and we need to be more consistent but have the guys to get the job done.” Pendley is looking forward to the spring season and seeing which of his players will step up, and help the Eagles capture a Big South Conference Cham-pionship. He also feels the spring will be an exiciting time for Winthrop since the goals the team has set out for itself are within reach. “Our focus this season is to get better every day and focus on the things we can control…our effort level, focus, preparation, etc,” he stated. “When we do that, we play well. The weeks we struggled we did not prepare well or had distractions on and off the course. I am looking forward to seeing who steps up and who goes the extra mile. All of our goals are in front of us and attainable, and that is exciting. It should be a fun season.” The Eagles started the 2011 fall season on a positive note picking up its fi rst team victory at The Maryland Intercollegiate while also having two of their players, sophomore Damon Postal (Blythewood, SC/Blythewood H.S.) and

freshman Taylor Dickson (Gastonia, NC/Forestview H.S.), tie for fi rst place at the tournament. The fi rst place fi nish by Winthrop was the team’s fi rst win since the 2007-08 season, and the fi rst place fi nishes by Postal and Dickson were also the fi rst by an individual player since Kelly Manders in 2007-08. Postal also set a school record at The Maryland Interco-legiate with a low round of 63, breaking the previous mark of 64 set by Manders in 64. Postal completed the fall with a 79.11 stroke average and competed in nine rounds. Junior Kamito Hirai (Summerville, SC/Pinewood Prep), a two-time All-Conference performer, enjoyed a suc-cessful fall season as he led the Eagles with a 72.25 stroke average and two top 10 fi nishes, including a sixth place fi nish at the Amelia Island Intercollegiate. He was one of three players on the roster to play in all 12 rounds during the fall, and fi nished eighth in the Big South in scoring average. Dickson compiled the second-best mark for Winthrop in the fall with a 74.50 stroke average and one top 10 fi nish, and his best round of 65 is tied for third-lowest in program history. He also joined Hirai in playing a team-best 12 rounds. Seniors Brandon Truesdale (Winnsboro, SC/Richard Winn Acade-my) and Jordan Sease (Lexington, SC/Lexington H.S.) each posted solid fall campaigns by fi nishing third and fourth in stroke average at 75.44 and 75.67,

respectively. Truesdale played in nine rounds during the fall and had a best fi n-ish of tied for 36th place at The Maryland Intercollegiate, where he also had a best round of 72. Sease had two top 10 fi n-ishes, with a best of tied for eighth place at The Maryland Intercollegiate. He was the other Eagle to play in all 12 rounds during the fall, and posted a best round of 68 on three different occasions. Redshirt-junior Cameron Bell (Charlotte, NC/N. Mecklenburg H.S.) participated in six rounds back in the fall and recorded a stroke average of 75.83. The Big South Conference has enjoyed unprecedented achievements and unparal-leled success in league history over the past few years. Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the fi eld of play and in the classroom. The league’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charles-ton Southern (then Baptist College) athletic director Howard Bagwell and Augusta president George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, re-ceiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the league’s fi rst commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an offi cial conference. The Big South’s fi rst year of competition was the Fall of 1984, and in September, 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fl edged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. The league received its fi rst automatic bid in 1990 to the NCAA Baseball Championship. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as commissioner. Under Sasser’s leadership, the conference implemented its fi rst public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its fi rst-ever men’s basketball televi-sion package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the fi nest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kalland-er replaced Sasser as the league’s third commissioner, and in is 12 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the conference to new levels. The conference’s on-fi eld accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of the conference’s student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the league has had almost 100 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence. The conference is made up of 11 full-time members which include Campbell, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Liberty, UNC Asheville, Presbyterian College, Radford, VMI and Winthrop.
