The Wisconsin Egyptian Arabian Horse Alliance (WEAHA) was created in the mid-1980's, by a small group of Wisconsin breeders of Egyptian Arabian horses. They were passionately concerned about preserving and perpetuating the vanishing bloodlines of the Egyptian Arabian horse, the world's pre-eminent, living source of classic, desert Arabian blood and devoted to the breeding of Straight Egyptian horses and other horses of Egyptian lines. Today, the Wisconsin Egyptian Arabian Horse Alliance and its regional membership in the Upper Midwest pursue, with renewed dedication, that original mission: the preservation, perpetuation and promotion of the Egyptian Arabian horse. It has become one of the few regional Arabian breeders organizations in North America and its members' steadfast commitment and enthusiastic participation in educational and promotional programs and projects are the envy of breeders' organizations everywhere. Fellowship and camaraderie are signature elements of every WEAHA effort. The group strives to provide relevant and valuable benefits and programs for all members, regardless of their level of participation. The annual Tour of Farms has become the flagship of the WEAHA's unmatched hospitality. Visitors on the Tour find the Egyptian Arabian horses, and the welcome of WEAHA members, truly irresistible. Educational clinics and seminars support the work of seasoned breeders and reach out to newcomers, providing not only much needed knowledge and skills but opportunities to build networks of acquaintance across the region. The Reference Guide of Egyptian Arabian Horses, published every year, features the breeding programs of WEAHA members and is widely circulated at equine events nationally. The Reference Guide is a full-color, spiral-bound edition that offers expanded advertising opportunities for members and for others who provide services to the Arabian horse community. WEAHA looks to the future of the Egyptian Arabian horse and honoring the accomplishments of amateurs in the show ring. WEAHA annually awards a trophy-jacket to the high-point amateur handler at the prestigious Egyptian Event, held each year at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY.

History The sands of time hide the origins of the Arabian horse. Born somewhere in the deserts of inner Arabia, Jordan may claim him.

Iraqis insist the Bedouin tribal families of the Mesopotamian valley and its surrounds gave him a home. Saudi Arabia in its arid

isolation, where only the hardiest and very best of horses remained to pass on their inheritance, lays its claim, as well.

In ancient days, the horses of Egypt's New Kingdom brought fame and honor to the mighty pharaohs who bred them and used

them to conquer vast empires. Equine reliefs are engraved on the walls of palaces in Luxor, and historians speak of horses kept

by the thousands in the stables of the Queen of Sheba in Yemen. Historians even tell that the first Arabian was ridden by Ismail,

the son of Abraham. The Prophet Mohammed honored the horse as a gift from the Creator and required that his followers cher-

ish and protect it as a member of the household. Their beauty, courage, pride, and speed elevated these royally bred creatures

to celebratory and godlike status. So famous did they become that even wise King Solomon was said to have "brought horses out

of Egypt."

Mystique Handed down in tales and poems recited around campfires in the desert night, the romance and admiration for the ethereal but

athletic horse of the windswept desert reach far back into the dawn of history and carry their magic into our lives today.

While any claim that today's Egyptian Arabian horse derives its

magnetic power from the ancient pharaohs of Egypt or from the

awesome presence of the pyramids is purely legendary, The Pyramid Society

preserves and perpetuates the magic and mystery, romance and history of

these splendid steeds and serves as an international catalyst to bring the

Egyptian Arabian horse community together.

Nobility

Some have asked: What is an Egyptian Arabian Horse?

The legendary horses of the desert were well-known in Egypt. These horses

were extremely rare and seldom for sale, and only the noble classes of society

could obtain them. They valued a horse of fine type. They ardently collected

the most beautiful of these, establishing a legacy as a "dry, desert-type horse."

When in 1805 Mohammed Ali became the Pasha of Cairo the stage was set to

build the finest Arabian horse breeding program Egypt had ever experienced. As a result of a series of military campaigns in Ara-

bia many choice horses, drawn from the heart of the desert, came to the royal stables of Egypt. Eventually over 1,100 spectacu-

lar animals were stabled at Shoubra, Mohammed Ali's luxurious country estate, the most ethereal equine collection in the world.

Abbas Pasha, grandson of Mohammed Ali, also collected his own horses, and through various connections with the house of Al-

Saud and other powerful Bedouin tribes, he obtained more of the finest horses Arabia and its environs had to offer. Housed in

the magnificent white palace, Dar El Beyda, as well as in other palaces, his horses became legendary worldwide. Horses to rival

those of King Solomon! Driven to assure the purity of his desert bred herd, all the horses that he, Mohammed Ali, and Ibrahim

Pasha had acquired were fully authenticated from trustworthy Bedouin sources. Later, when Abbas became viceroy, the collection

of oral Bedouin histories was compiled into a book, which was eventually found and translated by Gulsun Sherif and Judith

Forbis, and published in 1993 as "The Abbas Pasha Manuscript."

Type

Therefore, we have the answer to our question: A purebred Arabian horse, the Egyptian Arabian is literally a "breed within a

breed." Certain bloodlines, as authenticated by Abbas Pasha and further defined by The Pyramid Society, form the nucleus of

this specific group, valued since time immemorial as the archetype of classic refinement. It has for centuries been bred to con-

centrate the breed-distinguishing qualities known throughout the Arabian horse world as ''Arabian type."

Page 5: 2012 WEAHA Reference Guide

2012 Wisconsin Egyptian Arabian Horse Alliance Reference Guide Page 5

Legacy The Bedouin knew the Arabian as the ideal instrument of war: swift, responsive, agile, and enduring, with courage and loyalty, Over time, horsemen around the world recognized the Arabian

horses' value and introduced the blood of fiery desert bred Arabians for thriftiness, speed, endurance, responsiveness, and refined beauty into native stock. Today the Arabian is known as the foundation of all light breeds of horses.

Versatility

Although the Egyptian Arabian represents only a small percentage of the Arabian breed, these much admired and internationally sought-after treasures are exceedingly successful in the show ring, both in North America and worldwide. Echoes of their rich history of triumph over extreme conditions persist today in stellar performances across a variety of disciplines.

The Egyptian Arabian, the most beautiful of all breeds, is endowed with grace, agility, stamina, and intelligence, making it the perfect horse for competition and an ideal companion for a caring owner. Whether you are still entranced by Walter Farley's mythic Black Stallion, or find your spirit soaring at the sight of a colt high-stepping in a sunlit field ... Whether you count yourself among the stewards of a historic tradition ... or want to introduce your children to healthy discipline and responsibility ...

Whether you are a sales professional or accountant, artist, young mother, or a retired executive looking for your first gentle mare ... Whether you are looking for an investment that makes sound business sense and brings personal satisfaction, pride of

ownership, and the joy of new friends and relationships ...

The Egyptian Arabian horse will fulfill every dream. Plan to enter upon the enduring legacy and present adventure of this

magnificent steed -the horse with an unrivaled history.

The Wisconsin Egyptian Arabian Horse Association is dedicated to preserving and perpetuating the Egyptian Arabian bloodlines. WEAHA strives to increase awareness of the value and importance of Egyptian Arabians and to encourage others to share in the benefits and rewards of owning these classic horses. In Memory of Marianne Hacklander

"Who seeks success without toil seeks the impossible" Marianne Hacklander, who with husband John, built Hadaya Egyptian Stud into a model breeding program in the 1980's, understood the truth of Scheherezade's words of long ago. Vision....purpose..design, dedication, patience, perseverance...all these were woven into the fabric of Marianne and the Hadaya tradi-tion. These and one more. At the core of all Marianne did was deep faith that Nature makes no mistakes. She knew, of course, that we do....that she did...but at the heart of the matter, she knew also, was a Divine Rightness. Hadaya horses were among the best of the breed - authentic, classy...even exotic...and rock-solid. Much the same could be said of Marianne. She was a bold champion of her ideals. She was a cau-tious but honest mentor of

newcomers and a friend to those any who loved horses. She was never less than an elegant, thoughtful, and diplomatic emissary for the Straight Egyptian horse. Thanks to Marianne, the Wisconsin Egyptian Horse Alliance grew and flourished. On the foundation of her values and commitment, it continues to serve the Egyptian Arabian horse and the community of its enthusiasts. We remember her with fondness and respect. We honor her accomplishments and her abiding love of the Straight Egyptian horse.
