2012 Suicide Related Demand on Police Services Completed on October 11, 2013 2012 Update: Suicide/Attempt Suicide Related Occurrences Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) This report is a brief update of the number of suicide-related occurrences that the WRPS responded to from 2009 to the end of September 2013. The data source for this report is different from previous reports provided to the Suicide Prevention Council. Data is from WRPS Niche Records Management System (RMS). Once occurrences are closed in our CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch) system, they are rolled into our RMS system. Any new or updated information on the occurrence is updated in RMS only. The final occurrence type is more accurate from our RMS source (although unit service time is only available from CAD). The number of WRPS occurrences is counted by each unique event generated in CAD. CAD events may be generated from calls coming into the Communications Centre from a non-emergency line, from a 9-1-1 phone line, or initiated by an officer. Occurrences may be closed with an RTF disposition (which means a “Report To Follow”), or No Report “NR”, or duplicate events may be generated and/or cancelled. Data in this report includes all these occurrences with the exception that cancelled occurrences from 2011 on have been removed. WRPS uses two types of internal call/occurrence types that capture service involving suicides. The first is an “Attempted Suicide” call type (9030) that is broken down into six subtypes. The second is a “Suicide” (9025), which is a subtype of a “Sudden Death” call type (9020). Please note that a Sudden Death occurrence that has been closed with as a subtype “Suicide” (9025) is not an official cause of death. This subtype is selected by the reporting officer, based on information available to them, as the most accurate call type at the time the police occurrence is closed. Several tables and graphs of data are included below to provide a quick summary of the number of attempt suicide and suicide occurrences handled by WRPS from January 1, 2009 to September 30, 2013. For your information, this data is also listed by day of week and month of year. The frequency of attempt suicide and suicide occurrences and the related service time spent by Waterloo Regional Police Service officers provides some insight into the issue of suicide in Waterloo Region. The number of suicides and attempt suicides in this report is by no means a complete picture of suicide within Waterloo Region. Other attempt suicide or suicide related incidents may have been categorized under other occurrence types, (such as mentally ill call type calls) within the police data and therefore would not have been captured in this analysis.
