3 IES - Reflections

Hi Everyone,

Victoria’s inaugural daylight award is under way. Thanks to a lot of tireless work behind the scenes from David Poulton and Antony Dimase, Victoria will again be the first chapter in the country to acknowledge and celebrate this increasingly relevant sector of our industry.

This year’s awards gala dinner will be held at Maia at Central Pier Docklands on the October 19th. Bookings strictly close on October the 4th for our brightest night of the year, so get in early to avoid disappointment. Sponsorship packages are also available, so please consider helping us make this a special occasion.

Judging for the 2012 Lighting Awards has begun. Convenors, David Bird and Jan Flook, have gathered an expert panel of judges to work their way through a bumper crop of twenty-nine lighting entries and ten luminaire entries. From what I hear, the standard of entries is exemplary and we look forward to acknowledging them at the dinner in October.

The August meeting was an informative night with Steve Coyne; physicist, industry expert and National IES President illuminating us on the topic of “what makes a GOOD luminaire”. A big thanks to Steve for taking time out of his busy schedule while in Melbourne.

August has also seen us say farewell to some dedicated and long serving members of the Chapter Management Committee. On behalf of all of us, I’d like to express our gratitude for all of your tireless work behind the scenes over the years. Have a read about their experiences and the rest of this month’s happenings on the following pages.

Cheers,

Dave Anderson

VIC/TAS Chapter President.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD LUMINAIRELAST MONTH’S MEETING

Our August meeting saw IES President and Physicist Steve Coyne expound on ‘What Makes a Good Luminaire’.Turns out a good lamp is one of the key ingredients and Steve’s background in the Photometric Lab at QIT, lecturer at QIT, and more recently in private practice puts him in a good position to present impartial aspects of lamps, particularly LEDs.

Some aspects of LED testing have shown:

• ThoseLEDsaretemperaturedependentwitharound30% drop off in relative intensity for an ambient increase from nominal 23 o C to 45oC.

• ManufacturersofLEDunitsoftentestoutputatthree different temperatures so that OEMs should be able to publish parameters relevant to their product

• Beamaxisoftendoesnotcoincidewiththelampsoptical axis leading to significant non-symmetrical distribution

• PuttingdifferentLEDarraysintoaluminairecancompletely change the luminairies’ distribution, thus CIE and IES files can really only be created with absolute intensities

• RetrofittingexistingluminaireswithLEDpackagecan result in completely different illuminance levels on the target surface and may need a redesign of the luminaires positions.

MELBOURNE FESTIVAL 2012: FILM

The ArcelorMittal Orbit has divided opinion and to some eyes cuts a rather ungainly figure on the Olympic Park skyline. But at night it is transformed by a dynamic lighting display that renders its bizarre geometry intelligible and breathes life into its carcass. Jill Entwistle spoke to its design team leader, Arup Lighting’s Florence Lam.

With paint you can smudge, add colours to, and blend if you cross a line - Light as a medium, is less forgiving.Every movement is tracked precisely, and getting any recognisable form is difficult. At the end of a blindly illustrated 5 - 7 minute exposure, you either have an image that works, or a luminous tangle with the disjointed parts of what you’ve intended.

GALLERIES LIGHT THE NIGHT

Six Australian architecture practices that challenge tradition have been selected to exhibit in the Formations: New Practices in Australian Architecture exhibition at the Australian Pavilion during the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale.

The exhibition will showcase Australian architectural practices that challenge conventional perceptions and definitions of what it is to be an architect, as well as the opportunities for the profession to contribute to new areas of work through innovative practice formations.

VENICE BIENNALE 2012: AUSTRALIAN PAVILLION

The opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games saw the main stadium transformed into a huge array of LED video pixels, mapped to the space inhabited by the entire audience. Developed by Tait Technologies, the pixel tablet has become the latest product to emerge from the expanding range of Tait’s available rental systems. Producing over 70,500 pixel tablets for the entire stadium seating grid saw video emerge from its two dimensional world to become 3D; the audience members integrated into the show itself.

Welcome to 2012 IES calendar, kicking off with our traditional BBQ at The Mint to catch up with our colleagues after the holiday break. This month it’s all about networking and having a good time together before the year starts in earnest. We look forward to seeing you there.

It’s easy to forget that lighting is not just about technology and electricity, this month we’ll hear from an expert in daylighting and learn how we can better improve interior spaces through clever application of this often ignored light source. This meeting will begin with a short student presentation.Rachel Burke will be presenting a paper she read at the PLDC, an international lighting design conference in Madrid last year. It is an exploration of contemporary thinking and research in the field of innovative architectural design for the healthcare institution.

The new MYER store provides a wealth of design features for us to explore including daylight, new directions in architecture and retail and clever lighting solutions. Join us with lead designers including Lui Violanti from NH Architecture on the project for this fascinating review.

Taking lead from 2011’s Design Match, this year our special event at the Light in Winter festival will launch the full history, written by Steve Brown. Taking inspiration from Stephen Fry’s TV program QI, and hosted by comedian Rod Quantock, it’s bound to be the best history lesson you’ve ever attended!

PechaKucha is a worldwide phenomenon – presenters are limited to 20 slides and just 20 seconds per slide, ensuring a fascinating series of presentations. This year the IES will be organising its own PechaKucha – looking for Lighting Designers, Consultants and Engineers to prepare their own 6minutes promoting themselves, their businesses and lighting design.

This month we will be delving into the details of luminaires – what is important and what is not when choosing the best fitting for your project? The focus will be on the technologies inherent in luminaires – reflectors, body size, materials, lamps, control gear etc.

This meeting will begin with a short student presentation.Docklands may be windy most of the time, but the redevelopment of this area of Melbourne has led to many fascinating urban lighting solutions. Join us for this tour of the area, reviewing the installations and their effects on the public space.

Our Annual celebration of Lighting via the VLiDA, VLuDA & VLiTRA award programs – this event it outside of the corporate sponsorship package, specific event sponsorship opportunities will be presented mid 2012.

Meritorious Award winners of the VLiDA and VLuDA for 2012 will present their projects and luminaires to members in detail, giving us an opportunity to learn the details involved with the projects and to celebrate another year of lighting excellence. This meeting will also be our end of year celebration.

PREVIOUS COMMITTEE MEMBERSA BRIEF SUMMARY

BERDG PAPAZIAN

I had the least onerous duties of all the CMC members as I did a fair bit of travelling while I was on the CMC, twice going to Singapore to work for 6 months a time on their inaugural night F1 race in 2008 followed by another season in 2009.My involvement with the CMC was mainly helping out with the technical meetings, and also I helped out on the dinner committee for a couple of years as well as organizing the nibbles and drinks for the CMC meetings. I had a great time doing what I did, and this gave me an opportunity to further interact with other members of the Society, which was very enjoyable. I wish the current members of the CMC all the very best in the future

JACQUELINE UNWIN

It has been an absolute pleasure working with the Victorian Chapter Management Committee as the Award Dinner Co-Ordinator over the last few years. With a team of great people we have seen the Annual Award dinners go from strength to strength. Through my involvement with the CMC, it has increased the exposure of our business to the wider lighting community and I hope that in some way it has highlighted how important it is to support and continue to manufacture within Australia. I wish the CMC all the best for the future and thank you for being a great bunch of people to work with.

JOSEPH NORSTER

Over the last two years I have been fortunate to serve as Victorian Chapter Secretary . The role has allowed me to play my small part in the health and growth of a chapter that provides for its members the most comprehensive, well articulated, and informed meetings program.A monthly lighting publication that is an important resource for designers and suppliers alike, and an Awards Dinner that has gone from strength to strength. It has been a honour to be part of a CMC that is so dedicated to the improvement of its member services and advocacy on their behalf.I would like to extend my thanks and welcome to Jane Gilchrist as the new Victorian Chapter Secretary and wish her well in what I know to be a rewarding and fruitful role.

DAVID POULTON

Ohhh what to say when asked to reflect upon our contributions? Perhaps the opportunity to present three Technical Meetings; ‘The impact of ESD and the BCA’, ‘Embodied Energy and Life Cycle Assessment’ and ‘Daylight in all its beauty’. Fabulous speakers in Kaye Crowley, Dermot Small, Brett Munckton, Kay Abel. Malcolm Munro, Dr Robert Crawford and Simon Lockrey, Raynor Pierce, Dr Phillip Greenup and Kevin Poulton. All made possible by the incredible assistance from Ampelite, Ark Resources, Fryda Dorne and Associates, Simpson Kotzman and studio dp.Or…….the amazing CMC under the guidance of Adele Locke. No, actually I think it is you dear reader; our members. For all our differences, focus and skills, the very basic desire to see our world in a better light is why we do it and why I wanted to be involved. Thank you to all – it was an insightful time.

AMELIA CASTLEDINE

One year into my career as a lighting designer I was offered the roll of Reflection’s editor back in 2010. I eagerly took on the roll excited that it would fast track my education and open doors in the close knit world of lighting, and it sure did! Introducing a highly graphic, yet traditional layout to the magazine allowed for consistency across issues, as well as a fresh look aimed to engage all demographics. Quantity and variety of content improved due to monthly contributions from each of our committee members, and input from the membership. The focus on improved communication and content lead to the update of The Lighting Society’s website, the introduction of our very own flicker page to share event photos with the membership and a LinkedIn page where members could take advantage of online social networking. Now in the creative hands of Catriona Simmons, the magazine continues to improve; in reader interest, involvement and quality of content proving to be a valuable asset to our ever growing and diverse membership.

20 IES - Reflections

Dear Members of the IES You are invited to become a valued sponsor of the Society. Traditionally a small fee has been levied to cover costs of meetings, with the sponsors thanked at the meeting. As the Chapter has grown, so has the audience; we now provide events which interest a broader audience, bringing new participants into the industry with each passing month. The rewards to sponsors must therefore grow to match expectations. Logos will be included on invitations, advertising space will be provided in Reflections for several months running, and a complimentary entry fee to the Awards program will be provided as part of premium packages. As we develop stronger relationships with external partners such as Federation Square, State of Design and AIA, sponsorship benefits will gather further lustre. We have developed a broad range of event opportunities in 2012, and sponsorship is available to all organisations wishing to align with the IES and the lighting industry.
