The Travers Stakes was first run in 1864 in Saratoga. Itsinaugural winner, Kentucky, was owned by one of SaratogaRace Course’s founders and its first president, William R.Travers,forwhomtheracewasnamed.Themostprestigiousraceofthemeet,theTraversStakeshasrunallbutfiveyearssince its inception, andhasbeen runall but threeyearsatSaratoga,whenitwasmovedtoBelmontParkbecauseofwar-timerestrictionsontravel.
Today, the Travers Stakes attracts the nation’s best three-year-olds – many of whom have emerged from the TripleCrown series for the start of racing’s second season - in amile and a quarter competition that promises unparalleledexcitement,thrillingdramaandisakeyfactorindeterminingthesport’sthree-year-oldchampion.
