About the Wrangler National Finals RodeoThe Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is the season-ending championship event for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and is widely acknowledged to be the world’s premier rodeo. Held every Decem-ber at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, the Wrangler NFR is ProRodeo’s richest and most presti-gious rodeo, and it showcases the very best cowboys, barrel racers and livestock in the world.
The top 15 contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping (headers and heelers), saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding – based on money won during the regular season, the Justin Boots Playoffs and Championships, and for many bull riders, Xtreme Bulls Tour earn-ings – qualify to compete at the Wrangler NFR. At the conclusion of the Wrangler NFR, the sport’s world champions are determined based on total season earnings – what they win during the Wrangler NFR added to what they won before the Wrangler NFR.
The Wrangler NFR consists of 10 rounds on 10 consecutive days. Cowboys and barrel racers earn money by placing first through sixth in any round, and pick up more money by placing first through eighth in the average (cumulative times or points earned during the 10 rounds). At the end of each Wrangler NFR, there are two champions in each event (four for team roping): the average winner, who won the Wran-gler NFR by having the best cumulative time or score in his or her event over the 10 rounds, and the world champion, who finished the year with the most money (including what he or she earned at the Wrangler NFR). For each event, the average winner and world champion may be the same person or different people.
The 2011 Wrangler NFR was highlighted by a number of remarkable achievements and developments, including these:
• Multi-event superstar Trevor Brazile extended his record number of world all-around cham-pionships to nine and tied Ty Murray for the most Wrangler NFR all-around championships (six); he also broke a long-standing Larry Mahan record by qualifying for the world champion-ship in three events in the same year for the eighth time; seven months before the NFR, he set a new threshold by becoming the first cowboy to cross the $4 million mark for career earnings just three years after becoming first to surpass $3 million
• Bareback rider Kaycee Feild set a few records of his own: he won six rounds, the most ever for any roughstock event, setting a new benchmark cumulative score of 860.5 points on 10 head and breaking the records for NFR earnings in his or any single event with $179,327 and for a bareback riding season with $319,986; Feild also won the second annual Ram Truck Top Gun Award
• Charitable causes continued to benefit from connections to Wrangler NFR-associated events: The ProRodeo League of Women raised $100,000 for the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund; nearly 50 challenged children enjoyed participating in the Exceptional Rodeo with Wrangler NFR personnel and contestants; the World Famous Benny Binion Bucking Horse and Bull Sale did more than $1 million in sales and sent the proceeds to the ProRodeo Hall of Fame
• Feild and tie-down roper Tuf Cooper became the seventh and eighth sons of ProRodeo world champions to win their own gold buckles; Feild is the son of five-time World Champion Lewis Feild, who earned bareback riding titles in 1985-86, and Cooper is the son of eight-time World Champion Roy Cooper, who owns six tie-down roping titles (1976, 1980-84)
The 2011 Wrangler NFR had a record prize purse of $6 million, with an additional $1.8 million paid to participating stock contractors. More than 174,000 people attended the live performances – the 25th consecutive year that all 10 performances have been sold out – and the Wrangler NFR was rated No. 1 in the world as the highest-grossing ticketed event for venues with seating capacity of 14,000-30,000 in the February 2011 issue of Venues Today. Many more saw it on TV – all 10 rounds were telecast live and in re-airs by Great American Country to more than 60 million U.S. households on Dish Network’s channel 167 (165 for 2012), DirecTV’s channel 326 and multiple cable outlets. Coverage for Canada was provided by Rogers SportsNet.

Ram Truck Top Gun Award
Adding to the excitement level of a world championship event involving more than 100 human contestants and hundreds more four-legged athletes is a formidable task. But Ram found a way in 2010 – identifying and rewarding the cowboy or cowgirl who earned the most money at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.
How does this differ from the other titles awarded at or after the Wrangler NFR? Consider this:
• The NFR average title in each event is awarded to the contestant who has the best combined score (in roughstock events) or time (in timed events) across the 10 rounds of the event; this is roughly equivalent to winning any other rodeo – except for the huge payouts and resulting waves of adrenaline through the venue
• The world championship in each event is awarded after the Wrangler NFR to the contestant who earned the most money in that event at qualified rodeos across the PRCA’s year-long season, in-cluding what he or she won at the NFR (which is often the deciding factor)
• The Ram Truck Top Gun Award goes to the one contestant who wins the most money in any single event at the Wrangler NFR; it’s the only title that pits contestants in multiple events against each other.
While it might seem obvious that the contestant who won the most money at the entire Wrangler NFR must have won the average title in his or her event, and perhaps the world championship as well, that’s not always the case; see the list below.
The winner of the Ram Truck Top Gun Award gets a 3500 Ram Heavy Duty Longhorn Laramie truck, a special Montana Silversmiths custom buckle and a Ram Truck Top Gun-branded gun from Commemorative Firearms.
In 2010, 16-time world champion Trevor Brazile won the inaugural Ram Truck Top Gun Award.* He told the ProRodeo Sports News that the Ram Truck Top Gun Award affected his strategy that year: his second Triple Crown was on the line the next night, and so was the truck. “It’s put a whole new perspective on this NFR … There are a lot of times when you’re roping for a championship and you don’t take chances, (but) you’ll take a lot of chances for a Ram truck.”
In 2011, Utah roughstock cowboys Kaycee Feild and Jesse Wright battled it out until the very end; bareback rider Feild placed in nine rounds, winning six, and set an average record, while saddle bronc rider Wright placed in eight rounds, winning four, and broke his older brother Cody’s event records for average score and NFR earnings. Both Feild and Wright broke the single-event earnings record of $158,738 that J.W. Harris set in 2010 – Feild by more than $20,000.
