2012 Season Outlook

2012 Norwich Women’s Lacrosse5

A 24-3 conference record since2008 which includes 17 consecutive vic-tories, back-to-back NCAA Division IIItournament berths and Great NortheastAthletic Conference tournament titles anda 27-18 overall mark since 2008 is an im-pressive resume.

Norwich University’s Class of2012 and the Cadets’ coach aren’t satisfiedthough.

“We’ve been able to play very

strong (in the league),” Elizabeth Van-Parys, NU’s third-year head coach said.“However, the team wants to do more …take it to the next level. It’d be great to wina third straight GNAC title and get an-other NCAA tourney chance. Those aretwo of the goals this team has set.”

VanParys and the Maroon andGold have the pieces in place to make another run this spring. With senior

defender Lori Baldassara (Manchester,N.H.) and senior midfielder Kacey Abbri-ano (Hicksville, N.Y.) earning another yearof captains’ duties and sophomore mid-fielder Grace Fitzpatrick (Falmouth, Me.)returning off New England Intercolle-giate Lacrosse Association Rookie of theYear honors from 2011, Norwich has astrong nucleus to lead the way.

“The leadership that Kacey andLori can provide is critical for us,” Van-Parys said. “We have a relatively youngteam coming in (with half being sopho-mores and freshmen), and it will be greatto have them on the field to show thoseplayers what we want to do.

“We’re going to need (theyounger players) contribute if we want toreach the goals we’ve been talking about,”she added.

The Cadets’ offense looks to beone of the strengths early. They returnfive of the top six scorers from 2011 including Abbriano and Fitzpatrick whocombined for 83 of the team’s 197 goals.Senior attackers Suzanne Whitaker(Chelmsford, Mass.) and Danielle DelDotto (Andover, Mass.) were also above20 goals a year ago, while senior midfielder Mollie Fitzpatrick (Falmouth,Me.) added 11 goals.

Defensively, the Maroon andGold need to replace graduate goalkeeperKellie Pickel. VanParys pointed to a battlebetween senior Meghan Kennedy (Lowell, Mass.) and freshman Rebecca

Horgan (Topsfield, Mass.) for the startingspot in net. The new face will have theluxury of having Baldassara in front ofthem at a defender slot.

“There are a lot of good optionsfor us on offense,” VanParys said. “How-ever, we do need to develop the defense. The potential exists for several newcomers to be a part of that area.

“If we can get the defense going,we have a possibility of having anothersuccessful campaign,” she added.

The Cadets open the season byputting their consecutive league matchwin streak to the test. In the span of threedays, Norwich travels to Emmanuel College in Boston, Mass., March 20, hostsSt. Joseph’s College of Connecticut thefollowing day and is at Mount Ida March23.
