heaD cOach Rex WalTeRS A new era began April 7, 2008, when the Universi-ty of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball pro-gram. The former Kansas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running, and entering his fourth season on the Hilltop, excitement continues to build for what promises to be a memorable season. The Dons look prepared to follow Walters’ challenge: Play hard. Play smart. Play together. After a rocky 4-9 start to the 2010-11 season, USF righted the ship in dramatic fashion and ripped off 11 victories in its last 15 games to close out the regular sea-son. The Dons posted a 10-4 slate in the challenging West Coast Conference – the program’s best league mark since 1982 – and were in contention for the team’s first WCC Regular Season Championship in nearly three decades on the final day. Highlights of the regular season included thrilling overtime triumphs against Colorado (83-81) and eventual WCC Champion Gonzaga (96-91). San Fran-cisco qualified for its first postseason tour-nament since 2004 and marched to the quarterfinals of the 2011 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Wil-liams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player. Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas, and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game. KU com-bined to go 56-12 overall and won back-to-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. Walters and his wife, Deanna, have five children: Addison (15), Drew (13), Riley (10), Gunner (8) and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008.

Game #23 - Santa Clara Recap DONS DOWN BRONCOS 90-77 IN SOUTH BAY: San Francisco wrapped up a three-game West Coast Conference road trip with a 90-77 victory at ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara Thursday night at the Leavey Event Center. The Dons (14-9, 4-5 WCC) have won four of their last five games overall and defeat the Broncos (8-12, 0-7 WCC) for the fourth time in five attempts.
Four Dons reached double-digit scoring, led by 20 from senior forward Angelo Caloiaro. The South Bay product was clutch at the free throw line, converting on 12-of-14 at the stripe and added a team-high five assists in his final South Bay appearance. Junior forward Perris Blackwell added 19 points on 8-of-11 from the field with five rebounds in 27 minutes.
Junior guard Rashad Green chipped in 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting and pulled down a game-high nine boards. Sophomore guard Cody Doolin turned in a solid night with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists.
It was a historic victory for the Dons as they collected program win No. 100 against Santa Clara in the 209th all-time meeting between the ancient Bay Area rivals.
USF was the first team to shake off a sloppy start and used an 8-0 burst midway through the first half, including six unanswered points from Williams, to take a 21-15 lead with 7:38 remaining on a lay-up by sophomore forward Cole Dickerson.
San Francisco extended its lead in the second and led by as many as 16 with 13:57 remaining on a Doolin 3-pointer. Santa Clara made things interesting late, cutting the lead to five, 79-74 with 1:37 to go. The Dons closed the game on a 11-3 run.
USF shot .444 (30-56) from the field for the contest and shot .417 (5-12) from 3-point land. The Broncos shot .485 (33-68) from the floor, but sizzled in the second, converting on .606 (20-33) after the intermission. The Dons held a 38-33 rebound edge.
QUOTING WALTERS: “Games are never going to be easy for us and I wasn’t crazy about our focus (at the start). You have to give Santa Clara credit. They’re tough to guard and spread you out. It was a constant battle for me to tell our guys to guard. We just kept attacking on the offensive end.”

THE KEYS TO USF’S SURGE: USF’s 2010-11 men’s basketball team will never be accused of using a fast start. In fact, the Dons carried a 4-9 record into its Hilltop Challenge game against Hampton December 30. From there, it was a significantly different story. These charts at right and below show the tale of the tape, measuring key statistical categories during the Dons 4-9 start compared to its 15-6 finish; USF’s non-conference slate against the 2011 West Coast Conference campaign; and finally, compares the 2009-10 season with 2010-11 regular season.
