Frank CheekHead Coach24th Season

Frank Cheek has been a veritable living legend at Hum-boldt State Uni-versity since his arrival in 1969. His success story is illustrated by a

total of 1,338 victories — 1,077 in softball and 261 more as Humboldt’s wrestling coach.

In December 2009, Cheek received the highest honor a softball coach can achieve. He was inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame, becoming just the 50th coach to be so honored.

In 2008, Cheek and the Lumberjacks brought back to the campus for the second time in his tenure the Holy Grail of all col-legiate trophies — the NCAA National Cham-pionship — and again proved that Cheek’s program is the best in the country.

On that team, he coached three all-Ameri-ca, five all-region and five all-conference play-ers, while his coaching staff was honored as the NFCA coaching staff of the year.

Under his guidance, stand-out pitcher Lizzy Prescott was honored by being nominated for the Honda Division II Athlete of the Year and took home hardware as the California Col-legiate Athletic Association’s Female Athlete of the Year and Daktronic’s All-West Region Pitcher of the Year awards. Natalie Galletly earned Daktronic’s All-West Region Player of the Year, while Nikki Ketteringham was hon-ored by the conference as freshman of the year during 2008. Prescott, Galletly and Ket-teringham’s accomplishments earned them a spot on the 2008 All-American team.

In his 23 seasons as HSU softball coach, he has guided the Lumberjacks to 18 conference championships, 19 west regional playoff ap-pearances and five west region titles, includ-

ing capturing 1999’s “Best of the West” title in dramatic fashion. He has also been named conference Coach of the Year 12 times, in-cluding his final three seasons in the Pacific West. The 2001 coaching staff was named the best in the west region and Cheek was also honored for achieving his 600th win. He was named West Region Coach of the Year in 2001, following an impressive 54-14 sea-son and the team’s third berth to the national tournament. Cheek has directed 33 softball All-Americans.

In 2005, Cheek was named co-Great North-west Athletic Conference coach of the year, guiding the Lumberjacks to a 54-6 overall finish. Humboldt earned it’s fifth straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference crown with a 22-2 league mark.

In 2004, Cheek led the Jacks to a 60-6 overall finish, tying the program’s record for wins in a single season. The Jacks also fin-ished 22-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, earning their fourth straight GNAC crown.

In 2001 he led the Jacks to their second Pacific West Conference title and won the NCAA West Region Champi-onships for the fourth time.

In 1999, Cheek’s Lum-berjacks were ranked as high as No. 1 in the nation during the season. However, after losing the Pacific West Conference championship to Hawaii Pa-cific, HSU avenged the defeat in the regional

Page 6: 2012 Humboldt State Softball Media Guide

2012 Humboldt State Softball Media Guide6

tournament held at UC Davis (where some of the team’s greatest wins have been played) to beat Hawaii Pacific twice and advanced to Salem, Va., for a shot at the national title.

The Lumberjacks swept through the field at the national championship tournament and kept their 1999 post-season record perfect at 8-0 to bring home the top prize. The ‘Jacks finished No. 1 and were the top-ranked team for most of the 2000 season.

Cheek’s Lumberjacks easily handled Nebraska-Kearney in the championship game, 7-2 — and the rest is history in the record books as the HSU softball team gave the university it’s first ever national championship in a female sport.

“It’s a feeling I’ll never forget,” Cheek told the national media after the big victory. “I felt we were destined. In all the years I’ve been coaching, I’ve never had that feeling before.”

In 1998, the Lumberjacks captured the final Northern California Athletic Conference title, posting a 60-7 overall record and advancing to the West Regional Tournament.

Under his leadership in 1994, HSU finished the season No. 2 in the nation, advancing all the way to the NCAA Division II championship game. They returned to the championships in 1995, finishing third after defeating defending champion Merrimack.

Before taking over the Humboldt softball program, Cheek coached the Arcata High softball team for five years in addition to his du-ties as HSU wrestling coach. While at Arcata, his team won four league titles and made five section appearances.

Cheek, who coached wrestling for 22 seasons at Humboldt State, is the winningest coach in school history. His wrestling teams have won more than 250 matches. Cheek’s athletes have won a total of 46 All-America awards from the NCAA, including five individu-al national championships.

Cheek was inducted to the Califor-nia Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2003

Prior to graduating from San Fran-cisco State in 1963, Cheek served four years in the United States Marine Corps. While at SFSU, he participated in baseball and wrestling. He gradu-ated Magna Cum Laude and earned a master’s degree in physical education. In addition, he has a Secondary Ad-ministration Credential and a Second-ary Teaching Credential.

In 1991, Cheek was inducted into the San Francisco State Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduating he taught five years at Ceres High School. He joined the staff at HSU in 1969 as the wrestling coach and has also served as athletic director.

Shelli Maher-Sarchett, a key member of the 1999 Humboldt State national championship team, enters her seventh season as assistant coach.

In 2008, Maher-Sarchett and the rest of the coaching staff was hon-ored as the 2008 NCAA Division II Coaching Staff of the Year, after

coaching the Lumberjacks (57-18 overall, 24-8 CCAA) to their second ever NCAA DII National Championship.

In 2007, she was honored as the 13th member of the Humboldt State softball program to be elected to the HSU Athletics Hall of Fame.

Maher-Sarchett assists in leading the program she helped achieve the NCAA Division II pinnacle as a slugging catcher and

third baseman. The year previous to coming back to HSU she served as head coach at Dominican University in her hometown of

San Rafael, where she previously was an assistant coach for three years.

During her four-year playing career at HSU, Maher-Sarchett posted a .359 career batting average that included a .407 mark achieved during her sophomore season of 1998. After earning All-American honors as the Jack’s third baseman in 1998 and 1999, Maher-Sarchett took over the catching responsibilities her senior year, gaining All-American status in that position.

Humboldt State’s record book lists Maher-Sarchett in every career hitting category, including doubles, where she ranks first all-time

with 52. She is No. 3 in both RBIs (188) and hits (282), and No. 4 all-time in home runs with 18.

During her Humboldt State career, Perrine achieved totals of 25 doubles and 12 homes runs. Also known for her outstanding defensive skills, she hit .288 over the course of 231 games. Perrine ranks No. 9 in the Humboldt State record book for games played in a single season with 71 in 2008.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association has been one of the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in Decem-ber 1938.

The 12-member league is home to some of the nation’s finest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, Cal State Los Angeles, CSU Monterey Bay, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, Humboldt State, San Francisco State, Sonoma State and UC San Diego.

These institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s CCAA-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, softball and baseball comprise spring competition.

CCAA members have won 148 NCAA Championships (100 men, 48 women) all-time, far and away the most of any Division II conference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & field (13), tennis (11) and baseball (10).

CCAA institutions have been very successful in the history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, nine softball, six track & field, five volley-ball and five basketball national championships as well as 13 more in four other sports.

The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form a league in 1938. Over the past 70 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA including Cal State Ba-kersfield, Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacific, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis and Grand Canyon University.

The CCAA Commissioner’s Office relocated from Southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 13th year as Commissioner.

Humboldt State head coach Frank Cheek has built a winning tradition and has be-come a national powerhouse ever since he took over the program in 1989. The Jacks have not had a losing season from the program’s revival, and haven’t lost more than 24 games in a season under Cheek’s reign. During Cheek’s tenure, HSU softball has gone 1077-311-2 (.775 winning percentage). In his 13th season at the helm of the program Cheek was honored for reaching the 600-win plateau. That 2001 squad won the conference and the west region champion-ships and finished third at the national championships. In the decade of 1990, HSU went to the NCAA postseason play in all but one year — bringing home three regional titles and a National Championship in 1999. HSU first got on the national map in its first trip to the National Championships in 1994. In dramatic fashion, the Lumberjacks advanced all the way to the title game before losing to Merrimack College. In 1998, the Lumberjacks set a school record with 60 wins before being eliminated in the regional tournament by Cal State Bakersfield. A determined Humboldt State returned in 1999, after earning its third West Regional crown, and captured its first ever national title—the first national championship for women’s sports in the school’s history—setting a new standard for the years to come. In 2008, after a six-year curse of losing in the west region tournament, HSU finally broke through taking six consecutive games to make it to the national championship. The Jacks won their second national title in record breaking fashion by defeating No. 1 seed Lock Haven twice in 17-inning and 10-inning games. Humboldt State then defeated Emporia State twice in the final to take home the hardware for the second time. The program has suited up 35 All-America’s, including three-time honorees Jessame Kendall, Jamie Peterson, Jennifer Fritz, Natalie Gallety, Lizzy Prescott and current assistant coach Shelli Maher, as well as, seven two-time All-America selections. The winningest coach at HSU, Cheek has a total of 1,338 victories as a head coach for the Lumberjacks (1077 in softball and 261 more in wrestling).

From 1990 to Today: 19 West Region appearances

2009The No. 8 ranked and No. 1 seeded Lum-berjacks hosted the West Regional. In their opener, they dropped a sloppy 3-2 decision to Sonoma State. In its first game in the losers bracket, HSU used a three-run seventh inning rally to defeat Montana State-Billings, but fell and were eliminated by Cal State Stanislaus 8-0.

2008For the fifth consecutive year, HSU held onto it’s No. 1 seed as they hosted the CCAA Champi-onship Tournament. Despite being eliminated by CSU San Bernardino in the CCAA tourna-ment and losing to them in the first round of the regional tournament, the Jacks determination was apparent as they swallowed the rest of their competition to defeat Western Oregon twice to take the regional title. Looking at a tough bracket at nationals, HSU defeated No. 1 seed Lock Haven in a 10-inning game in the first round and a 17-inning game in the semi-final round and shutout Emporia State twice, first in the second round and then in the championship game, to finish its season on a 10-game winning streak and earning the title National Champs.

2007

The Jacks continued it’s No. 1 seed streak for the fourth year in a row entering the West Regionals Championships. HSU opened the tournament falling to Seattle University 0-2. The Jacks then came back to defeat Hawaii Pacific University 3-2 to stay in competition. The Lumberjacks went on to defeat UC San Diego 2-0, but their joy was short lived as they fell 4-2 to Seattle University.

2006Earning the No. 1 seed, the Lumberjacks opened play with a 3-2 win over No. 8 seed Hawaii Pacific followed by a 6-5 win against No. 4 seed CS Dominguez Hills. HSU fell 3-1 to No. 2 CSU Bakersfield and were forced to play the Toros again for a chance to meet CSU Bakersfield for the championship. The Jacks lost the rematch with CSUDH, 3-2, eliminating them from the tournament.

2005A record-setting season came to an abrupt close at the West Regional in 2005. Humboldt State, the No. 1 seed, fell 1-0 to San Francisco State and 3-1 to Montana State Billings to finish the season 60-6 overall.

2004Humboldt State hosted the West Regional in 2004. The Jacks earned wins over San Fran-cisco State, 4-0, and Seattle, 5-1, but fell twice to eventual West Region champion Western New Mexico, 3-0 and 2-0.

2003The Lumberjacks started out strong in game one, defeating the No. 5 seed CSU Dominguez Hills and then lost a one-run ball game in the bottom of the seventh to top seed CSU Bakersfield. On day two, the Jacks held on with wins over Western Washington and Western New Mexico, but finished third as they were eliminated by another loss to host CSU Bakersfield.

2002The Lumberjacks were defeated in two games at the 2002 West Regionals hosted by UC Da-vis. The Jacks fell 1-0 to host UC Davis in their first outing and then fell 5-4 to eventual West Region champions, Chico State, immediately following.

2001The Lumberjacks knocked off Cal State Stan-islaus 3-1 in the first day of the tournament before they turned to host UC Davis and won 3-2. The Jacks took on UC Davis one more time, winning 2-1 to pick up the West Region Championship and advance to the NCAA Na-tional Championships.

2000The Lumberjacks suffered heartbreaking defeats to UC Davis and Cal State Stanislaus on their

home turf in Arcata ending hopes of a champi-onship repeat.

1999With one swing of her aluminum bat, Taiisha Pleasant ended five years of waiting for the Humboldt State softball program. Pleasant’s 10th inning home run with Megan Keesling aboard lifted the Lumberjacks to a 2-1 victory over Hawaii Pacific and the NCAA West Region championship.

1998Humboldt State made its fifth consecutive ap-pearance in the West Region tournament, trav-eling to Bakersfield for the event after the NCAA denied the No. 1 seeded Jacks’ bid to host the event. Humboldt opened the tournament with a 3-0 victory over UC Riverside, avenging two regular season losses to the Highlanders. The Jacks then fell to CSU Bakersfield, 1-0, drop-ping them into the loser’s bracket in the double elimination format. The Jacks rallied to knock off UC Riverside, 8-5 and then defeated Bakers-field, 2-0 behind Jessame Kendall’s three-hitter to set up the championship game. Humboldt’s offense sputtered in the finale, however, as CSU Bakersfield claimed a 4-0 decision that ended the Lumberjacks’ 1998 campaign.

1997The Lumberjack’s season ended quickly after losing the first two games of the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament. HSU committed a total of five errors in the two losses to Cal State Bakersfield and UC Davis. The Roadrunners scored five times in the top of the seventh to blow the game open. They won the game 10-5. In the second game, Gena Webber—NCAC Pitcher of the Year and the nation’s leader in ERA— completely shut down the Jacks as she fanned eight batters. Erin Raethke took the loss in game two, as the Aggies, the eventual region champion, cruised to a 6-0 victory.

1996Seldom the Lumberjacks lose two games in one day, both shutouts. This was the case in the West Regional at Davis as the HSU was shutdown by UC Davis and Portland State. UC Davis’ Gena Webber held the Jacks to four hits in the 3-0 victory. Facing elimination from the tournament, the Lumberjacks battled Portland State to a scoreless tie through six innings before surrendering the winning run

in the bottom of the seventh. HSU was again held to four hits.

1995The Lumberjacks came home again for the West Region event, and this time rewarded their fans with the defense of their title. Jennifer Fritz helped Humboldt win three games in the regional tournament with her seven hits and .636 batting average, and Diana Stallard drove in six runs. The Jacks took the final by a 4-1 score over UC Davis.

1994Stacie Lonquist was back to lead the Lum-berjacks into the postseason at Davis, and the NCAC Player of the Year’s .443 batting average kept the Jacks on track at the West Region Tournament. Humboldt did it the hard way - emerging from the loser’s bracket to take a pair of wins Saturday and claim their first-ever region title.

1993After a one-year absence from the big event, the Jacks returned and got the opportunity to

perform on their home field. They defeated the Portland State Vikings 3-2 in the opener, but dropped games to Cal State Bakersfield and UC Davis and had to watch those two battle for the title in Arcata.

1991As the No. 3 seed in the four-team regional at Portland, Humboldt State surprised everyone by upsetting No. 2 Chapman College 1-0 before defeating No. 1 Portland State by the same score. Humboldt needed only one win on the second day to claim the title, but host Portland State came back to score 7-1 and 7-0 victories over the Lumberjacks and advance to the na-tional tournament.

1990The Lumberjacks, making their first regional appearance in program history, were the No. 5 seed of five teams selected. In the regional held at Bakersfield, the Jacks opened with a 4-2 loss to the host Roadrunners, the region’s No. 1 seed. They defeated Portland State 4-0 to stay alive, but were eliminated by Cal Poly SLO, 2-1 in the next game.
