Never Give Up! by John Koonsman

i must be honest. How many times can a guy drive 2.5 hours to the north in hopes of finding tro-phy steelhead trout without catching anything? 2010 was the year

i was asking myself this question almost every weekend. That year, i spent a lot of

time on the St. Joe river in Mishawaka with-out having much luck. in fact, it has been described as the worst year ever for trout due to a variety of reasons. But keep the faith! 2011 has been reported

as one of the best years in northern indiana trout fishing ever? What's the difference?Well the drive home is a lot shorter when

you had a good day of fishing! Was it the weather? Was it the water?Captain russ Clark of Sea Hawk Charters

out of St. Joe, Mi had one day on the river that yielded 17 fish! The steelhead clubs had banner events with

big weigh-ins.Dick parker of Central Bait and Tackle in

Mishawaka simply described it as "On Fire".We asked the indiana Dnr this questions:

Last year Steel head fishing in the St. Joe River has been the best it has ever been. Although the previous year, it was reportedly the worst it had ever been. Can you explain this and what were the stocking numbers history for years prior and going forward?

How deep are your lures run-ning?

Knowing exactly how deep your lures or baits are when trolling has always been a challenge for both novice and experienced fishermen (and women). Different techniques have been used to try to determine how deep a lure will run under spe-cific conditions.

Fishermen have trolled on a sloping sandy bottom until their lure drags bottom to make a log of what depth that occurs for each lure in their box. Others have tried to make calculations based on line angle, and some have even used divers to deter-mine lure depth and made charts and published books with the charts for others to use.

The problem is slight changes in conditions can affect a lure’s depth by several feet. Trolling slightly faster or slower, the wind pushing the boat sideways, waves rocking the boat (tugging back and forth on the lures), underwater currents, water temperature, line diameter, varia-tions in the lures (even though they look identical) and other factors all combine in very complex ways to af-fect a lure’s trolling depth making it impossible to know just exactly how deep your lures are…until now.

Technology has arrived that will give every fishing person, weather a novice, week-end fisher or experi-enced charter captain, the ability to know exactly how deep their lure, live bait or cut bait runs. The new system is called the “Smart Troll” system and it works by attaching a small Smart Troll Sensor between your main line and your leader line. The Smart Troll Sensor is less than ½ inch in diameter about three inches long and weighs less than 1 oz in the water. The sensor hangs from a short 175 lb test stainless steel leader with a loop for attaching it to the main line and a snap swivel for attach-ing it to the leader line. it is small and light enough so that it has little effect on lure action. it has no wires attached to it but its internal electron-ics are able to sense its depth and the temperature of the water at that

depth. Every few seconds it sends a signal, through the water to a receiver on the boat. The signal is encoded with depth and temperature information and the display on the receiver shows the depth of the sensor and the tempera-ture of the water at that depth. Your leader line can be as long or as short as you want it to be…but because the lure is just a few feet behind the sensor you know the exact depth that the lure is being trolled.

With Smart Troll when a change of conditions changes the lure’s

depth you know within a few seconds because the Smart Troll receiver will tell you the depth of the Smart Troll Sensor with live readings. imagine the possibilities…

Scenario 1:i am trolling through water that i

know is rich with fish and I see on the depth finder that I am marking fish 20 feet deep. But i pick up a weed which both contaminates the lure and chang-es the lure’s depth.

Without Smart Troll i am unaware of the weed so i troll on through and wonder why i did not get a bite. But with the Smart Troll, i set the lure’s depth to 20 feet (where the fish are) but without any change in conditions i look at the Smart Troll display and see the lure raised to 10 feet….a sure sign that i picked up a weed or something. i reel in remove the weed set the lure back to 20 feet and in a few minutes i am shouting “Fish On”.

Scenario 2:i know it is the time of year that

the fish are hanging out near the ther-mocline. i have heard that it is some-where near 50 feet deep but exactly how do I find it? With Smart Troll, all you have to do is let line out in 10 foot increments, waiting a few seconds for the sensor to adjust to the surrounding temperature each time you stop. Once you see the temperature suddenly drop

a few degrees, you know you crossed the thermocline.

Scenario 3:I fish in a lake where the bottom

has sudden changes in depth. i know certain times of the year the big lunk-ers hang out right where the bottom slopes. But when i am trolling in 30 feet of water and my depth finder tells me that the water depth suddenly changed to 20 feet i have a dilemma because i am not sure just exactly how deep my lure is running. The question is…do i leave the lure where it is and risk getting hung on bottom or do i reel it in and end up way over the top of the fish hanging out on the slope? With Smart Troll there is no question. if i am trolling in 30 feet of water and

I want to fish near the bottom I let my lure back until the Smart Troll Sen-sor tells me it is 25 to28 feet deep. if I look at my depth finder and see that the water’s depth suddenly changes to

Smart trollers Know Exactly How deep Their Lures Run by Darrell Huff, Founder, Smart Troll

20 feet then i know without a doubt my lure is going to get caught on bot-tom once it catches up to where the boat was when the depth changed. So, i grab the reel and start reeling…once the Smart troll Sensor tells me the lure is 15 to 18 feet i know to stop reel-ing so i can just barely skim over the slope…so close to the big lunkers that they cannot help but strike because of instinct.

The Smart Troll System will defi-nitely change the way you fish with a whole new tackle box full of tech-niques because…Smart Trollers Know Exactly how Deep Their Lures run.

Trophy Technologies, LLC was founded in 2003 by rick Quade and Kris reibel. From the very start, rick and Kris set out to make fishing tackle that was truly unique. Being avid anglers, they sought to produce brands that would cater to professional Fishermen, while at the same time providing superior products at a price within reach of the average angler.

nothing makes the guys at Trophy Tech happier than seeing Trophy Fish being caught by our customers all over the world. Our baits can be found in Tackle Stores in 43 countries. From the USA to Canada, russia to the Ukraine, to South Africa, Australia, poland, Turkey, Thailand, Japan, germany, italy, Spain, England, France, Holland, ireland, and virtually every other Western European country, our brands are the "go-to" prod-ucts of experienced anglers.

The company started, like many successful companies, by accident. Back in 2003, rick and Kris met at a neighbor-hood party on geist Lake. They spent the night talking fishing, and Rick showed Kris a fluorocarbon leader he had been using for musky fishing. Back in 2003, the concept of using fluorocarbon for musky was something almost nobody

Trophy Technologies, LLC by rick Quade

was using, and the product was quickly licensed to Musky innovations through a previous relationship rick had with the owner of the company.

That day, the company was born and rick and Kris founded Trophy Tech. Within months, Trophy Tech was off and running with several customers. But it was not until 2005 that reaction Strike was born. From day one, reaction Strike was a brand that created the absolute highest end products that were sold for reasonable prices. naturally, the brand succeeded quickly and today the reaction Strike brand (www.reactionstrike.com) can be found in 40 countries and over 1,500 stores in the USA.

As the US economy started to tank at the start of the Obama administration, Fishing Tackle companies were especially hard hit. Many quality brands began to struggle, and Trophy Tech purchased Hoerne Toad Tackle (http://www.reaction-strike.com/hoern-toad-hooks.html) and Castaic Swimbaits (www.castaicswim-bait.com), the originators of the 100% rainbow trout replica big bass lures for California bass anglers. The patented Squirt Bait was purchased next.

As recently as a few weeks ago, Tro-phy Tech purchased Backstabber Lures (www.backstabberlures.com), the most talked about crankbait lineup in recent

years. Backstabbers feature a patented top back hook on a 360 degree swivel. The result is 90% of bass are hooked in the top of the mouth where they just cannot shake free.

Trophy Tech specializes in freshwa-ter bass lures, musky lures, and musky rods. in the bass line, incredibly details swimbaits, topwater frogs, and a full lineup of hard baits from topwater to 20’ plus diving plugs make up the line. The company also makes some of the nicest and most detailed soft plastics that can be found anywhere. The company also manufactures saltwater products from gaffs to hooks to saltwater soft plastics of all shapes and sizes.

The guys at Trophy Tech try to stay one step ahead of the rest of the fishing world. recently, Alabama rigs have become the craze in bass fishing. 30 or more companies have jumped on the A-rig bandwagon, each with a near identical copy of the original. instead of just creating another me-too product, rick teamed up with legendary pro Bass fisherman Charlie Ingram to create a weedless Alabama rig. The results – instant huge demand and within 3 weeks customer orders ranging from Tackle Warehouse to Cabelas and 150 other customers in between.

If you are a serious fisherman,

chances are you have Trophy Tech prod-ucts in your boat. Trophy Tech manufac-tures products for 30 other brands on an OEM basis. Trophy Tech also manufac-tures for gander Mountain, Wholesale Sports in the Pacific Northwest, and many other customers.

Another interesting aspect of Trophy Tech is it’s focus on not only domestic fishing products, but also international products. The Castaic and reaction Strike brands are amazingly popular in countries like germany, France, Spain, Holland, Australia, and even Japan. Some examples include the fact that an estimated 15 of the top 20 pike of all time in germany have been caught on Castaic lures and recently the second largest Bar-ramundi in angling history was captured in Australia on a reaction Strike bait. go on most Sea Bass Charters in France and you will be fishing with Castaic Jerky J SWiMS.

What’s next for Trophy Tech? Well several more acquisitions are in the final stages of completion. TV shows are being filmed and you can catch us on Fishing University on the Outdoor Chan-nel on 24 episodes in 2012. Also check us out on Fox Sports Midwest on Keyes Outdoors, a primarily musky oriented show.

We’re still catching fish up here . . .by Captain Craig Koepke, Host of Into the Outdoors AM 1420 WIMS - Thursdays 7 til 9 pm/Saturdays 3 til 5 am www.intothegreatlakes.com

Hello again, from the far north of Indiana. Just a little bit about myself, I have been a charter

Captain for 4 years here on Lake Michigan, before that I was a creek guide and I am the host of an outdoor talk show. I run a charter boat called the “Knot Rite” out of Washington Park marina in Michigan City, IN. My boat the “Knot Rite” is a true fish-ing boat; it is a 25 foot Hydra-Sport center console with twin 225 HP motors. The name of my charter business is Into the Outdoors Charters www.itocharters.com 219-561-3405, the type of charters that I offer are Trolling for Trout and Salmon,

summer Yellow Perch, casting trips for trout and salmon and com-ing in 2013 casting trips for Lake Michi-gan Smallmouth Bass. If you have never been fishing on Lake Michigan here is what you are missing: there are 5 different species of Trout and Salmon in Lake Michigan, Steelhead trout, King

salmon, Brown trout, Coho salmon and Lake trout. The typical way of fishing for these trout and salmon is trolling, which is using down riggers, planner boards and weight lines. I start trolling for spring Coho and Kings in April after the marinas open. This is usually done in shallow water close to shore. Most of the time the action is very fast and furious, having multiple Coho’s on at a time which creates a Lake Michigan fire drill and is just a blast! If one of the spring Kings decides to latch on to a line, now you are just talking about a crazy time! When the water warms up the fish will begin to move off shore and out into deeper water, then if the weather patterns and the wind perform like they have for the last 2 summers (July and August) cold water will get trapped just off the beaches in from of Michigan City. When this happens there will be Steelhead, Kings, Lake trout and Coho stacked up in the bottom of the water column where the cold water lies. This will be just off the beaches in 50 feet of water; the water temp may be 80 on top but 45 on the bottom this makes for some great fishing. This is the time of year that I start offering night charters which is a lot of fun catching these big fish in the dark. Yellow perch are one of the best tasting

fish in Lake Michigan, starting in June and running till the end of August is when the perch fishing is the best out of Michigan City. Some anglers call them yellow bandits but I call them a great time. When I first start fishing for them I will look in deeper water out to 60 feet some days, then the water will start to warm and the Perch will begin to move closer to shore. Right around the 4th of July they will be just off of the beach, sometimes in water as shallow as 6 feet. The week before and the week after the 4th, I take off from my full time job in order to run two charters per day, as well as to fish for yellow perch to fill my own freezer. I think

that this is the best time of the year to catch a big mess of perch and there will be some very nice sized ones. Dur-ing this time of the summer the weather is usually very nice and you don’t have to worry about the wind coming out of the north and blowing you off of

the Lake. When the perch are this sallow, I have taken them with small top water baits, but I normally stick to my usual techniques. When the Perch are deeper, I often will not throw out an anchor but let the wind push the boat along, while dragging small spin-ners tipped with minnows or crayfish. When the fish move to shallower water (less than 30 feet) is when I will start using jigs tipped with minnows or gulp. I like fishing for the big fish but really love the perch, they taste awesome and are fun to catch on light and micro-light rods. If you want to book a trip just go to my web site or feel free to give me a call. The 2 weeks around the 4th of July will be the first

charters that will fill up early for the perch trips so make sure you call early to get one of these great charters. Have a plentiful fishing season and I will see you on the water.

We have been stocking roughly 160, 000 7-inch fish each spring for over a decade with very little variation over the years. in 2007 as a result of a major construction project at the Mixswabah hatchery the fish that were stocked into the St. Joe were roughly a ½ inch smaller since Bodine was rearing all the steelhead for the entire state, which may have lead to the declines in returns in 2009 and 2010 in addition to Lake Michigan forage issues.

Additionally, we produce approximately 80,000 6-inch fish which are released each fall. All of these are Skamania steelhead reared at the Bodine facility in Mishawka. Also, we re-ceive 40,000 winter strain steelhead each April as part of an agreement with Michigan Dnr. it is key to recognize the importance of working together with all 4 state agencies that manage Lake Michigan since the fish travel the entire water body during their life span.

Last season, 2011, we had a better than average return of all trout and salmon from the June to December period. Our long term goal is to see returns of all trout and salmon of roughly 10,000 annually to the St. Joe as counted mov-ing through the ladder at South Bend. in 2011,

we had nearly 12,000 trout and salmon move above the ladder during the 12 month period. Steelhead in the spring and summer/fall season comprised approximately 9600 which is similar to what we saw in 2008. A lot of the returns are influenced by the forage that is present on Lake Michigan. As long as there is ample supply of the right size of forage(bait) available, the fish will grow well, survive and make spawning runs during their 3rd, 4th or 5th year of life. Forage was in pretty decent shape in 2010 which helped push the trout and salmon fisheries in a positive direction. Mother nature has a lot to do with how well our fish survive and things have been real positive in the fall of 2011. We did see an increase in coho return to South Bend which were strays from MDnr stockings in the lower river.

This spring we are hopeful to see a con-tinuation of the same year classes from the fall move into indiana waters of the St. Joe as the winter strain steelhead move into indiana. The fisherman have had a very good fall season which will add to the St. Joe program excitement. We were not the only state that saw decline in 2010. it was pretty much across the board for returns which gives us an indication it is not our stocking program but a lake influence. The other thing to remember is that when steelhead fishing is excellent on the Lake proper, those fish will be removed from the fishery and not have a chance to return. We did see an excellent lake fishery in 2010, which was the best over the last decade. interestingly, indiana did have a pretty decent nearshore trout and salmon fishery during the

2011 season but not at the same level that oc-curred in 2010.

We are on track in 2012 for our second major stocking of coho salmon into the river this fall. Even though the fish will not return for 3 to 4 years, we feel this additional species will benefit Hoosier anglers in the future. This will help with the ups and downs that have re-cently occurred within the steelhead migration.

So as you can see, the explanation is not a simple one related to stocking numbers. The Lake Michigan ecosystem is constantly chang-ing and no two years are ever exactly alike. Forage base ups and downs and temperatures play a big part in overall fishery success. There are many more factors that influence success compared to an inland water body.

Answer by:Brian Breidert Lake Michigan Fisheries Biologist219-874-6824, [email protected]://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/3625.htm

Monroe Wiper Stocking Updatein 2011, Monroe reservoir was stocked with 161,250, 1 to 2 inch hybrid striped bass finger-lings. The target number is 53,750 fingerlings. in 2010 and 2011 East Fork State Fish Hatchery has produced a surplus of hybrid striped bass. in 2010, Monroe res. received 107,500 spring fingerlings. In the 2011 fall hybrid striped bass evaluation, 74% of the adults collected were age 1 fish from the 2010 stocking. This is a good in-dication of a successful year class and continued good hybrid fishing.

Like many of you I have had a love hate rela-tionship with trolling motors. I remember my first relationship. It was with a Mini Minn Kota. My buddy and I would load a johnboat with a cooler of beer, 12V battery, and flashlights. Then we would make this 22lb thrust trolling motor push us around ponds in search of bullfrogs. Fully loaded we just crept along. Some nights we could mosey around the ponds with no problems. Other times if the wind kicked up we could smell trouble and weren’t sure the Mini Minn Kota could get us back in. I have fond memories of that first rela-tionship but knew I needed more.

After that first relationship ended I got involved with several others. Most ended badly. I kept looking for something more. I felt I deserved better than what the others had to offer. Reading the local paper one day an interesting story caught my eye. It featured a story about a company that had designed an excit-ing new trolling motor. This article said it could do so much more than any motor I’ve owned. More than I could even hope for.

The article was about Rhodan Marine Systems, makers of the HD GPS Anchor+ Trolling Motor. I am not a gadget guy and while reading the ar-

ticle I thought it might just be too complicated for me. But the article interested me so much I knew I would have to see this motor in person. The following day I called Rhodan to make an appointment to see how this thing worked. I was able to meet one of their engineers and he gladly gave me a demonstration. It was amaz-ing, and was quite relieved to see how user friendly it actually was. So after several rocky trolling motor relationships I have my soul mate.

The more you use this trolling motor the more you will appreciate and understand all the benefits it offers. One benefit I recently realized was when I went to an artificial reef in the Gulf searching for Cobia. In the past I would locate this reef with my bottom finder then back off to set anchor. Next I would chum, hoping Cobia

would surface. With Rhodans GPS Anchor I no longer had to throw an anchor line. Simply deploy the trolling motor, push a button and the precision GPS Anchor + keeps me parked right on top of the reef! Regardless of the wind, waves, or current. No heavy anchor to retrieve when you need to move either.

Another benefit I soon discovered while do-ing a charter. Before I met my soul mate I needed to stand on the bow to operate the trolling motor. My clients would then be fishing off the back. With Rhodans wireless trolling motor I can now be in the back or on top the poling platform. This clears the front and better fishing position for my clients. Person-ally I do not enjoy using a push pole. But I sure like the view of the water when on that platform. Now I am free to get up there and with a birds eye view, troll silently along looking for fish. Big Advantage!

I have a question for you. Lets say you are done fishing a certain area. Isn’t there always one more spot just a little further up that you want to try? Not far enough away to start the big motor, it’s within trolling distance. If you had the Rhodan GPS guided trolling motor you

could just point the bow of your boat in the direction you want to travel. Push a button and it would take you in a straight line to that spot like a guided missile. I have learned to take advantage of that scenario and hit the cooler, grab a bite, or change lures while my boat glides along, hand free.

Talk about hands free, you can create or record up to eight routes. Recall any route you create and the GPS guided trolling motor will steer while you fish your favorite spot. The Rhodan trolling motor can also record and store four dedicated anchor spots. This came in handy one day for my wife and me. We stopped for lunch at a restaurant on the water but no dock space was available. I found an empty area

away from the dock pushed a button on the troll-ing motor remote. It created an anchor spot. Next I trolled back to the dock, pushed the button again to set a different anchor spot. We stepped out onto the dock. I then pushed the anchor button once more. With nobody in the boat, it trolled itself back to the open area anchor spot I had created and the boat stayed there like a well-trained dog. After finishing lunch I pushed the button on the remote again. To the amazement of several onlookers the boat slid up to the dock and picked us up. That’s the way a relation-ship is meant to be.

Hybrid striped bass generally refers to a cross between striped bass and white bass (wipers). This cross is produced by using eggs from striped bass and sperm from white bass. The hybrid striped bass in Lake Monroe have gained wide-spread acceptance as a sport fish by many fisherman. Lake Monroe continues to produce more and more fishing boats set up to challenge the hybrid striped bass year after year. Many of which, have been aboard Reel-Me-In Fishing Charters. Reel-Me-In Fishing Charters provides on-hand fishing education for you and your boat.

Because of the ability of gizzard shad and threadfin shad to reproduce in large numbers the hybrids are stocked to help control the over population of shad. Hybrid striped bass populations are maintained by stocking programs in many reservoirs throughout Indiana where hybrid striped bass do not reproduce. Hybrids survive and do well in a wide range of environmental conditions. The usual life span of hybrid striped bass is 5 to 6 years - more similar to white bass than to striped bass (30 to 40 years). The growth rate of hybrids in Lake Monroe is determined by several factors: water temperature, quality & quantity of food, frequency of feeding and water quality. Hybrid striped bass are generally harvested at a weight of 1.5 to 2.5 pounds when they are 18 to 24 months old. The much smaller Hybrid Striped Bass are regularly caught in the shallower creeks feeding the reservoir. The hybrid striped bass

is considered an excellent food and game fish averaging around 8-12 lbs. in Lake Monroe once the mature fish reach the open water.

The hybrid striped bass become active enough the chase live bait and artificial lures that are presented prop-erly once the water temperature reaches 45 degrees and above. Beginning in late winter (March) hybrids tend to concentrate in deep areas near inflowing streams and in the spring may undergo spawning migration at-tempts into upstream areas. Try the upper end of the lake after ice out through mid-April. The hybrids are generally most active during periods of low light such as dawn and dusk. Hybrid striped bass are seldom found in extremely shal-low areas or areas that contain dense growth of aquatic weeds.

A good sonar with side scan capabilities with greatly reduce your time searching for the hybrid striped bass. Johnson Outdoors has pro-vided us with a Humminbird 1198 SI sonar unit. If you have a little bit of an imagination; you can really see the schools of fish images moving around along creek channels, flats, rock ledges, and away from your boat. LOL. Once you locate the fish and study their patterns for a few, you can tell which way the fish are laying. Then you can proceed with the best approach angle to get in on the feeding action. Varying your lure depth will help you key in on where the produc¬tive feeding depths are located. The Hybrids can be caught through-out the day if you can keep up with the constantly moving bait fish. Rhodan Marine Systems has provided us with Rhodan HD GPS Anchor+ precision guided trolling motor that

takes you fishing! When I need to set up on bait fish; the Anchor mode works wonders. Just hit it and forget it, the Rhodan Anchor+ trolling motor puts the boat back right on top of the bait fish for the optimum presentation. Once the trolling motor learns your fishing habits, all it needs is a few buttons pushed to wake it up. If the bait fish shift just

push the arrow button in the direction the bait fish moved and it will shift you over 5 feet at a time. When trolling live baits, just hit a preprogrammed route and off you go through your most productive areas with more time to concentrate on the rods being pursued by the targeted fish. WOW! It even does this on windy days!!!!!!

Whatever your method of fishing for the Hybrid Striped Bass; you should be prepared for a fight. Hybrids are incredibly strong and hard-hitting fish. If there is a

weak link in your tackle, a hybrid striped bass will surely point it out to you. A long rod with some flex to it helps absorb the shock of the initial strike and keeps the hook from pulling out. Sharpening the hooks on your lures is the best way to keep fish from getting off. An-glers will need to keep on hand a variety of artificial baits to be used

on down riggers and or planner boards, and a number of crank baits and assorted selection of buck tails that simulate the bait fish of choice “SHAD” are a sure bet as well.

The Hybrids can be found all over the lake throughout the summer months through October. Watch and listen¬ing for splashing bait fish on the surface of the water. Just about any shad-colored bait will get hit when thrown into a school of feeding hybrid striped bass. Casting a buck tail with a soft

plastic trailer can be used to catch hybrids prowling windswept shore-lines where baitfish are stacked up near the bank. The hybrid striped bass generally prefer open water; however they pretty much follow the baitfish. The majority of the time we are on the water fishing for the hybrids we are able to consistently find them in the open water.

The best way to learn how to fish for the Hybrid Striped Bass is to hire a professional! Call Captain Dave (317) 590-1061 with Reel-Me-In Fishing Charters on Lake Monroe or Raccoon Lake for some Striped Bass Fishing Education.

Rhodan Marine Systems! Reel-Me-In Fishing Charters has been fortunate toprovide hundreds of fishing customers the consistency of the HD GPS Anchor+ trolling motor in a variety of fishing condi-tions for over 2 years now and the unit is here to stay. The HD GPS Anchor+ trolling motor is bullet proof in my opinion. The electronic components are performing flawlessly and the onboard Interstate 29C - 24 volt battery systems life has been extended approx. 20%, compared to previously owned trolling motor brands. Rhodan Marine Systems has provided our fishing char-ters with something unavailable on the planet “TIME”; everyone is in search of this. When we are live bait fishing on a Reel-Me-In Fishing Charter, boat control is every-thing to consistently catching fish. The wind is a fisherman’s worst enemy! Not with the Rhodan HD GPS Anchor+ onboard. Using your preplanned fishing route, you will save hours of your day by not moni-toring boat control. The HD GPS Anchor+ precision guided trolling has sev-eral modes of operation to choose from. In Anchor Mode, the system will keep your boat parked where you want it, in any depth of water, automati-cally compensating for wind, waves and current. High defi-nition precision differential GPS receiver provides remark-able positioning accuracy. No need to mess with a muddy and noisy anchor. Anchor Sites can be jogged in precise

five-foot increments in four directions relative to the boat’s heading using the wireless fob. Four dedicated Anchor memory loca-tions, plus eight more multi-purpose memo-ries, allow you to store up to twelve of your favorite fishing spots. In Route Mode, allows you to take advantage of the eight multipurpose memory locations to record in-tricate paths and routes up to 1000 miles long! Routes can be recorded while running at troll-ing speed and even at cruising speed with the system stowed. Play your recorded routes back in either direction at your chosen speed while the GPS Anchor steers your system for you. The system will automati-cally anchor when it completes a memorized route. The HD GPS Anchor+ precision guided trolling mo-tor takes our charter boats around idol buoys, docks, anchored boats, etc. and back again all day long with-out touching the hand held remote control. Therefore it has put hours each day back into fishing, not boat control. Our fishing clients are amazed when the boat heads toward a stationary item such as a dock or even the shoreline and then it makes an immediate turn (without assistance) avoiding the obstruction that the fish are holding on or near.Another key to the success of our fishing charters is utilizing the Track Mode on windy days! In Track Mode, the system will automatically pull

the boat along a chosen course, continually compensating for wind and current disturbances. We use this mode on those

strong windy days where it is virtually impossi-ble to maintain a straight line while slow trolling. You can set a straight course across the lake or down the shore line and the HD GPS Anchor+ will pull you along the chosen course (regard-less of the wind speed). Dual Tilt-compensated compasses keep your boat on a stable, directed path as your boat makes a beeline track toward your chosen target. You can concentrate on your fishing techniques and not worry about the boat turning in a circle and creating havoc on your fishing lines. If you would like to shift the direc-tion of travel slightly to the right or the left, just tap the arrow button one time for every 5 degrees in the direc¬tion of travel that you choose. This really works great when your boat is confronted with a moving obstacle (like another fishing boat on the move). The HD GPS Anchor+ also has a Manual Mode! In Manual Mode, the system behaves just like a normal trolling motor, allowing you to steer and control the thrust (10 speeds, forward

or reverse) to suit your fishing style best for the type of fish being pursued. “Effortless boat control means successful fishing trips! Suc-cessful fishing trips keep us returning to the lake for more successful fishing trips!”

This is Bruce Tomlin, from Cum-berland indiana, and this is an article about how my sons, Adam (18) and Jordan (12) and I got into carp fi shing in the fi rst place, and how things have evolved for us since then.

I suppose I fi rst thought that Adam might like starting to catch some fi sh was way back when he was maybe 5 or 6 years old, and like most boys that age, he had developed a pretty keen interest in dinosaurs, insects and other animals. plus, i was pretty sure he'd be able to hold a pole and land a bluegill, or some other small species he'd be likely to catch.

Have to say that he really liked it a lot, right from the start, and i don't

think too much time went by ( maybe just a couple years ) until he was using the bluegills as bait in pursuit of larger fi sh to catch! He was able to land a few nice bass that way.

One time, while we were walking along the bank at a local park pond, i noticed a carp that looked to be at least several pounds dart-off from the margins. And, as i'd caught a few carp before on the ever popular Wheaties

ball in past years, i thought this could provide a good chance for Adam to break his all-species pB!

The little pond were we fi rst started carping never produced anything more than high-singles for us, but it was a start for something that has really grown into our favorite activity to this day.

Even at that young age, when he started getting into catching some fi sh, that while not huge, where certainly too big and powerful to just crank 'em in easily; he really did have very good instincts on playing fi sh properly, with steady pressure and patience to bring them to the net. i don't recall ever having to coach him too much as far as catching fi sh goes. Same thing with Jordan, when he got old enough to join us.

Wanting to expand our horizons as far as technique and venues, we got a lot of help and advice from gilbert Huxley, rick Slinker and Westside Bait and Tackle proprietor, Jim Donlan, plus other members of the Hoosier Carpers who were all very helpful.

While we started off just fi shing for carp with the rods and reels we already had, and putting kernels of canned sweetcorn directly on the hook, when Adam started wanting baitrunners and a

pod for Christmas and his birthday, there was no looking back, or going back, to that way of doing it!

The establishment of the White river State park and renovation of the river bank around downtown india-napolis certainly came at a great time for us as this area quickly became our "home court" as far as a great place to go and catch carp, and sev-eral other species of fish too. Can't even begin to guess how many hours the boys and i have spent there over the years!

in recent years, we've expanded our venues to the point were White river, and other "numbers" places have been largely replaced with trips to places where we hope to have a better chance at catching bigger fish, even if it probably means fewer will be caught in an average session, but i guess that's how it eventually goes for most of us doing this seriously for a period of years.

Catfishing. The mere word evokes memories of sitting on the bank of your local river at night with a blazing fire,

putting chicken livers or some other smelly concoction on your hook, and sitting all night catching little fiddlers. But catfishing has come a long way in just the last 10 years. profes-sional catfishing has arrived. its not just about sitting on the bank with your Zebco 33 rod and reel anymore. These days you will see serious catfisher-men (and women) investing thousands of dollars in their gear. names like Abu garcia, Shimano, Okuma and Shake-speare have become synony-mous with trophy catfishermen while companies like Catfish gear USA, Bottom Dwellers Tackle and Catfish Connec-tion deal almost exclusively to the catfish crowd. And boat companies are no exceptions either. Both Sea Ark boats and riverpro are now making boats tailored to catfishermen with large live wells for monster fish and round recirculating livewells for holding sensitive baitfish such as shad, mooneye and skipjack.

The web is alive with cat-fishing forums and thousands of catfish-related sites. The United States Catfish Asso-ciation (catfish1.com)now has well over 48,000 members and Facebook has hundreds of cat-fishing pages where members share their secrets, give reports on local waters, and post pic-tures of their trophy catches.

The tourism industry is

also starting to reap the ben-efits as catfish anglers now are traveling all over the country to find trophy fish. Places like

the James river in Virginia, Lake Texahoma in Texas, Santee Cooper Lakes in South Carolina and Wheeler lake in Alabama are becoming more and more crowded with anglers wanting to catch a fish in the 100lb range. And even places like Cumberland City Tennes-see see a migration of anglers in the winter and spring as cat-fishermen flock there to catch

their preferred bait (skipjack) by the thousands and freeze them for use later in the year.

Both Bass pro Shops and Cabelas sponsor catfish tourna-

ment trails that give away thou-sands of dollars in prizes as well as boats and other prizes.

Catfishing has Come a Long Way by Scott Wiseman

Many other smaller trails have popped up all over the country. From the Cape Fear Catfish club in north Carolina to the grizzly Catfish Trail in Alabama and the Southwest Ohio Catfish Club in Ohio, catfish tourneys are now starting to share ramps with the bass fishermen and showing up in good numbers.

Closer to home, both Du-racats and the Indiana Catfish Association call indiana home. While Duracats concentrates its efforts mainly on the Ohio river, the ICA fishes all over the state, splitting time between rivers and lakes. in 2012 they will host 8 points tournaments and 5 open tournaments (where no member-ship is required). Tournaments

will cover the state of indiana from Lake Freeman in the north to the Ohio river in the south. The Indiana Catfish Association boasts a membership of over 200 people and regularly have

around 20 - 25 boats at each tournament. Their annual Hoo-sier Energy Open at Turtle Creek reservoir will see no less than 120 boats each year. (This year

the tourney is on March 17th. guaranteed payout is $2750). The iCA was founded in 1999 by

Darrin platter, Mike Mitchell and Jon Land. The club has weighed in over 24,000 lbs of channel catfish, blue catfish, and flathead catfish since its inception All tournaments are a 6 fish limit with all fish being catch and release. Anyone fishing 6 of the 8 points tourna-ments are eligible to fish "The Classic" where bigger prizes are awarded. (in 2012, The Classic

will be held on the Ohio river at new Albany).

in 2011, iCA members weighed 385 catfish for 2390.3 pounds. That's an average of 6.21 lbs. per fish. In June of 2011, Walter gibson caught a 56lb blue cat while fishing the points tourney in Vevay indiana on the Ohio river. This was the ICA record fish for only 4 months as James Halcomb caught a 57.7lb blue cat on October 1st at the Madison indiana tournament. James and his tournament partner Chuck Breedlove went on to win the points championship, beating out the 2nd place team of Jason Meece and Brent McClel-lan by 7 points. past presi-dent and multiple Classic win-ner ron Streeter com-ments "The iCA is

really a fun, well-run tourna-ment series that promotes not only competition, but does it in a family friendly environment. Keeping the cost of a tourney at $60 per boat has really helped people the last few years with rising gas costs. And we allow 3 people per boat which isn't the case with many other clubs." iCA secretary Mike Mitchell agrees. "The iCA tourneys are like mini-rivalries with a lot of the members having fished against each other for years. But make no mistake about it, if someone needed bait or tackle or even a tow-in, another member would proudly step up to help them."

So as the weather starts to warm up in the coming days, remember that there are mon-sters lurking below in whatever water you fish. Always remem-ber to catch and release any fish over 10lbs to ensure big fish for our children and grandchildren. Tight lines and screamin' drags to ya!!

Consider a robotic trolling motor that will hold your boat with the precision of a pole anchor… in ANY depth of water, completely unattended.

Ever wished you could adjust your anchor location? Our Anchor Jog™ feature will allow you to fine tune your position, with precision 5 foot increments in four directions, by simply touching a button on the wireless remote. Once you nail that perfect spot you can store it to memory and come back as often as you like.

Want to free up your hands while moving to the next

spot? Give your boat the control of a guided missile with our Track mode. Just point your boat at the target, press ”T“ and set your speed. The

GPS Anchor™ system will steer you on a bee-line course to your destination, automatically

compensating for wind and current.

Have a more intricate path you would like to follow? The Route Memory function will allow you to record 8 routes up to 1000 miles each (pack a lunch!). These can be retraced in either direction and the system will automatically anchor when it reaches either end.

The stability, flexibility, and durability of the GPS Anchor is simply unmatched by the competition. The NEW Tarpon 1.0 Firmware takes Trolling Motors to a Whole New Level by offering over 100,000 Unique Configurations, Untouchable Boat Positioning, and Silky-Smooth Refinement. Our proven LiNE-X® Coating Technology provides the ultimate protection for everyday use. Contact us today and discover how Rhodan Marine can provide the Ultimate Fishing Tool that is customized just for YOU.
