Lent is a season of turning to God in simplicity and sincerity as we prepare to celebrate the joy of Easter. Our hearts feel heavy as we remember our sins, but we are also confident in God’s mercy and forgiveness.

The three great Lenten practices are prayer, fasting and almsgiving (almsgiving means giving money or other help to the needy). Doing these three things will help us to keep Lent as a holy sea-son. Let’s be open to God’s kindness as we promise to pray with more love, avoid treats and collect our coins to give to those less fortunate than ourselves.

LENTEN PROJECT

In order to instill in our students the spirit of giving and reaching out to people in need, each year during Lent, our school chooses a charity to which students can make contributions. This year, we have chosen The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s School & Youth Program.

More children die from leukemia than any other cancer. The students in our school can help change that. By participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s School & Youth Program, Pennies for Patients, students will have the opportunity to make a difference and work towards a goal that helps others.

On Monday, March 19th, a representative from the same organization will make a presentation about this project to the students at 10:15a.m. This project will commence on the same day and end on Friday March 30.

Pennies for Patients is a great way to involve students in a program that builds good values, and helps them understand that they can make a real difference in the lives of others.

Staring this month, the 8th grade and 1st grade classes have began a Buddy System Reading Pro-gram. Every Monday morning a volunteer 8th grader will join the first grade class, and read to the students. The 8th grade student reads the weekly reading story for the class, and asks the students questions about the story. We hope to con- tinue this program until the end of the year. It will be beneficial for our 8th graders as well as our 1st graders!

1st and 8th grade Teachers

Armenian Sisters’ Academy has started a fun and educational program which is principally focused on writing, called the English Writing Elective. Every Thursday, last period, all of the students from 6th to 8th grades dis-perse into separate classrooms, 8th, 7th, 6th, and the school library. Mr. B., Mrs. Papirian, Mr. Bassett, and Mr. H. teach different classes. Mr. B., volunteering his time, focuses on character development; that is, bringing a character to life, from nothing to something. Mrs. Papirian, a parent and an attorney, is generously donating her time to teach 7th and 6th graders legal writing. She is preparing them for next year’s Mock Trial team. Mr. Bassett, is teaching creative writing to 8th, 6th, and 7th graders. The class works on writing short stories and po-ems. One of the class’s goals is to publish a literary journal at the end of the year, displaying the student’s work including their best short stories and poems. Mr. H is teaching the journalism class the skills of researching and reporting. Students often go to the computer lab us to make us of modern technology in their writing. Overall, this seems like a fun activity, while giving us some freedom for the classroom and the chance to mingle with other classes and to get to know other students better. All the while, we are also strengthening English writing skills.

On Saturday, January 14, 2012, 100 ASA students, parents, administration, coach, and friends of ASA boarded the bus and headed towards the STAPLES Center for our annual Clippers/Lakers game.

The group was evenly split in half. Proud Lakers fans were wearing yellow jerseys (you know who you are) and confident that the game was theirs, and, on the other hand, Clippers fans knew for sure that they were the des-tined winners. After a lengthy discussion in the bus, in which, both parties presented their cases as to which team had the better chance and the better players, the bus arrived, and we all went in to witness this historical game.

It was a close game, and after much cheering from both teams, the Clippers won the game.

But the highlight of the evening was when after the game our students had the chance to play on Clippers’ court. And what talented students we have. They may not be (for now anyway) as tall as Kobe Bryant or a fast mover as Chris Paul, but they have the right moves on the court. We would like to share with you pictures of the Paparazzi (their parents). Thank you Coach Janet for organizing the games and also thanks to Mrs. Kathy, Mrs. Lara and Mrs. Ani for helping out.

As with any field trip preparation and planning, this one, especially, was challenging since after I made neces-sary arrangements in August, the NBA players went on strike. But, overall, it was a wonderful night for Clip-pers’ fans (sorry Lakers fans), and we look forward to next year’s game.

Thank you Advisory board members Mr. Hovig Yeghiayan and Mr. Noubar Derbedrosian for always being pre-

sent and lending a hand. Mrs. Armine Sherikian

5th Grade Trip to Griffith

Observatory

It was February 10th, a Friday, and we were ready to go to our first field trip alone. We got on the bus after prayer with one parent and our homeroom teacher Mrs. Kossayan. It was about a 10-25 minute trip be-fore we stopped at Griffith Ob-servatory. We were a little early, so we went around the

exterior of the observatory until it was time for our tour. When it came, we first went up to the telescope. It was special because we were the first 5th grade to go up the telescope. Over there we saw that the telescope was huge. Then we went outside where two smaller telescopes were set, looking at the sun. Since the sun has harmful rays, they filtered it and it looked like a giant red dot. Later, we went downstairs to the exhibits. We got to see planet models and how much you would weigh on each. After that, we saw more exhibits which tell you about as-tronomers and what each of them discovered, nebulae, and much more. We also saw the Periodic Table of Elements. Later we went to a show and learned how to make a comet. We also learned the three items you need for life which were: CHNOPs, water, and energy. The C in CHNOPs represents carbon, the H is hydrogen, the N is nitrogen, the O is for oxygen, and the P is phosphorus. After that, we went to the planetarium and learned about water and how to find constellations (star forms). We also learned what the zodiac is. We then went to Griffith Park to eat our lunch and play games with friends. It was an amazing field trip and I hope we can have more!

In keeping with tradition, our First, Second and Third grade classrooms decorated Valentine Day cards for the children of St. Jude's Hospital. Each student wrote his or her own message for the patients, along with a lovely picture. We also had parents donate items for the chil-dren requested by St. Jude's. Thank you to all parents for the donations. We are very grateful. We hope that this gesture of kindness will teach our students generosity, and love. Thank you to all our students who participated! 1A-1B 2A-2B Third Grade

Report cards

February 2012

On Tuesday January 24, 2012, I attended a seminar in Pasadena deal-ing with powerful early intervention strategies to help students improve their reading and writing skills. Joan Aldrich Knight, the speaker, was very informative and helpful. We engaged in group dis-cussions about ways to help our students improve their English lan-guage skills. Later, I brought back notes on the new strategies and shared them with my colleges that we will work on incorporating into our lesson plans.
