In addition to these two programs, we are involved with supporting the high school “No Room for Hate” program by partially funding their yearly assembly. The foundation has also funded a variety of individual high school students’ requests for fi nancial assistance with special courses and/or needs.

Donations are gratefully accepted at the Temple address. We are a 501C3 non-profi t education foundation. Contributions are tax deductible. Together we can make a difference in our children and our community. It does take a whole village to raise our children.
The success of our Wake-Up Program is due to our wonderful volunteers – most of whom are retired teachers. In fact, of the Foundation’s Executive Board of 10, six are retired teachers and one is a retired superintendent. All of these volunteers were involved in the formation and start of our foundation. We are also fortunate to have a lawyer as our vice president, a banker, and a CPA. Most of the retired teachers were formerly employed in the Muhlenberg School District plus a few from other districts as well. Since 2004 we have given hundreds of hours to helping students, their teachers, and their parents achieve educational success.
On Sunday, October 21, 2012 we will be hosting a fund raising dinner and silent auction at the Heidelberg Country Club. This is our main fund raising event. The event starts at 4:00 for cocktails at which time we will be accepting bids on the auction items. A buffet will be served at 5:00 with the auction taking place at 6:00. Music for listening and dancing will follow. Come out and enjoy an evening for a great cause. Tickets are $50 of which $25 is tax deductible since we are a 501C3 non-profi t organization. Hola. Bonjour. Ciao. Hello. Are you heading to another country for your vacation? Are you a non-English speaker looking for a new way to learn English? Get a head start in learning a new language by trying out the Muhlenberg Community Library’s online language learning program, “Byki”.
Byki has a total of 80 different languages you can learn including German, Italian, Spanish, English and Mandarin. You defi ne your own learning by working through activities geared toward improving your writing, grammar, and pronunciation. Byki is set up for beginners, but helps all learners review the most important phrases and vocabulary in a new language. As you work through the activities available, you can keep track of your progress to successfully retain the language.
All you need to try this new program is a library card and a computer. You can even use the language learning stations in the library or access the program from your computer at home. Your friendly library staff is ready to answer any questions, so try it out today! If you have any questions, email Deanne at [email protected].
The Muhlenberg Community Library’s Board of Trustees have enacted a new policy in order to keep your children safe: “The library may contact the authorities when children under age 11 are unattended by an adult.” If you have any questions, please contact Marcina Wagner, Director, 610-929-0589.
Children can read to therapy dogs at the Muhlenberg Community Library on the second Saturday of every month from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Dogs are great listeners and don’t care how fast or slow you read! Registration is preferred, but walk-ins are also welcome if there are openings. Stop by the library or call 610-929-0589 to register your child for a time slot.

Muhlenberg HS Hall of Fame On Friday, November 25, 2011, the Muhlenberg School District Hall of Fame will induct its thirteenth full class into membership at The Riveredge Restaurant. Listed below are the 2011 inductees:
The Muhlenberg Hall of Fame is divided into three categories: athletic, scholastic and career. The athletic is open to athletes, coaches, administrators and others. The scholastic is open to those who have excelled in academics, in the arts or in the vocational area. The career is open to those who have excelled in the area of service or those who have achieved noteworthy accomplishments or prominence. The inductees will be honored on Friday, November 25, social at 5:30PM and dinner at 6:30PM at the Riveredge Restaurant. Tickets are $27 for adults and $15 for small children. On Saturday, Feburary 26th, 2012 the “Blue Groove” MS Jazz Band took part in a Jazz Band Festival that was held at the Oley Valley MS. The “Blue Groove” group as a whole won the “Outstanding” rating which is the second highest rating possible. At the same event, Nolan O’Keefe won an individual award for the “Best soloist” in woodwind/saxophone.

Winners for the Reading Berks Science Fair
Many of the seniors in Mrs. Smeltzer Schwab’s AP Physics B class aspire to become engineers. In order to help students achieve this goal, Mrs. Smeltzer Schwab entered teams of students in the 2012 Toshiba/NSTA (National Science Teacher’s Association) Exploravision competition. The Toshiba/NSTA Exploravision competition requires students to do research, development, and higher-order thinking by asking the students to develop a technology that does not exist today but could exist in 20 years. Students must explain how it would work and the possible benefits of this new technology, similar to what many engineers do in their field.
There were 1,313 entries nationwide, representing approximately 10, 000 students in the grades 10-12 category. This year, two of Mrs. Smeltzer Schwab’s teams were recognized as 2012 National Honorable Mention Award winners by Toshiba/ NSTA. There were only 14 teams in Pennsylvania that were recognized with this honor; no others in Berks County.
The team of Erica Ligenza and Jeanlouise Hornberger received this distinction because of their creation called “One Light”. One Light was envisioned because of the energy that is released by light bulb that is lost to the environment. The team of Tyler Chlebowski, Alex Gibson, Kyle Leibensperger, and Gerardo Ponce also designed a project focused on the concept of energy. Their creation, called “GP2: Glucose Powered Products”. It focused on possible future ways to create energy from plants.
Congratulations to Erica, Jeanlouise, Tyler, Alex, Kyle, and Gerardo on their accomplishments and we wish them well in their future endeavors.
Looking for Volunteers If you have an hour or two a week available to donate during the school day, we are looking for you! Please join our math volunteer program to help our Kindergarten – 6th grade students improve their math skills. Muhlenberg Graduates continue as Scholar Athletes!

On March 8, 2012 six of our outstanding juniors were selected to attend the 9th Annual High School Leadership & Ethics Conference. The students heard a great keynote speech from Dr. Len Marrella entitled “The Power of Character” and then they were placed into groups with West Point Cadets. While the students were in these groups they discussed ethical dilemmas and how they would react to hard choices they might have to make. The students learned about the “Six Pillars of Character”: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.

High school students who took business classes this year were offered the opportunity to tour the Harley Davidson Factory in York, PA. The students were exposed to the history of Harley Davidson, toured the facility where the motorcycles are constructed, and enjoyed sitting on various motorcycles. This was a fantastic learning experience to learn about a great American company.

The Counseling Department was able to secure a grant through PHEAA for the 2011/2012 school year. The grant offered students a variety of opportunities which included an SAT test prep course held at the high school, a FAFSA completion night, and the opportunity to visit three colleges. We had fourteen students enroll in the SAT prep course and were able to assist several families in completing their FAFSA forms. Approximately sixty students took advantage of the college visits and they were able to choose one of the following three colleges: Pennsylvania College of Technology, Lebanon Valley College, or Millersville University. Fifteen students attended a college summer camp program with Albright College.

Students and teachers at Muhlenberg Elementary Center chose “You’re Finally Here” by Melanie Watt as the winner of the 2012 Muhl Medal. Congratulations to Mr. Charles Payne’s 4th grade class for the winning campaign. This funny story about a rabbit who scolds the reader for taking so long to join him in his book won a narrow victory over nine other nominated titles. The winning book as well as the other nominations are sure to be in great demand at the MEC library this fall! Thanks to all the fourth grade students and teachers who worked so hard to enthusiastically promote their books.

Muhlenberg HS Hall of Fame On Friday, November 25, 2011, the Muhlenberg School District Hall of Fame will induct its thirteenth full class into membership at The Riveredge Restaurant. Listed below are the 2011 inductees:
The Muhlenberg Hall of Fame is divided into three categories: athletic, scholastic and career. The athletic is open to athletes, coaches, administrators and others. The scholastic is open to those who have excelled in academics, in the arts or in the vocational area. The career is open to those who have excelled in the area of service or those who have achieved noteworthy accomplishments or prominence. The inductees will be honored on Friday, November 25, social at 5:30PM and dinner at 6:30PM at the Riveredge Restaurant. Tickets are $27 for adults and $15 for small children.
