Dennis DavidsonDirector of Athletics

Dennis Davidson has been director of athletics since May of 1996. He came to Catawba Col-lege in July 1984 as director of public information and moved totally into sports information one yearlater.In 1991, Davidson was promoted to assistant to the athletic director, and in 1993, he was promoted toassistant athletic director for game operations, in addition to the sports information duties.

Davidson oversees the entire athletic program at Catawba. He has also been responsible forsecuring athletic advertising and sponsorships and has had significant roles in Catawba’s Sports Hallof Fame inductions, the South Atlantic Conference Spring Sports Festival and the year-end athletic cer-emony. He is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) andwas a member of the regional advisory committee for NCAA Division II football (2002- 04). Davidson iscurrently the South Atlantic Conference AD liaison for baseball and women’s basketball and chairmanof the SAC Athletic Directors Council.

Davidson was also highly involved in the planning of the Hayes Field House and Shuford Stadium reconstruction. He also has directedthe highly popular Sam Moir Christmas Basketball Classic since 1996.A former member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Davidson was chairman of the NAIA District 26 SIDs andthe Carolinas Conference Awards Committee for three years (1986-89). He was voted by his peers as District 26 SID of the Year for 1987-88and 1992-93.

Born in Statesville, but reared in Salisbury, Davidson graduated in 1977 from West Rowan High School, where he was a four-year let-terman in baseball, earning All-North Piedmont Conference honors as a senior.

Davidson earned a bachelor’s degree in English at Catawba in 1981, working as a part-time writer at The Salisbury Post during hiscollege years. He actually began at The Post as a 16-year-old sportswriter in 1975.

A member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church, Davidson is president of the Westside Pool Association. He is also a member ofthe PTA at Southeast Middle School.

Davidson resides in Salisbury with his wife, Toni, a registered nurse at Lexington Memorial Hospital. They have three daughters,Bethany (22), a Catawba graduate, Katie (19), a sophomore at Catawba, and Carrie (14).

Dr. Joseph B. Oxendine, chancellor emeritus of UNC Pembroke, is currently serving

as the interim president of Catawba College. Oxendine took over in March of 2011. Ox-

endine is a 1952 alumnus of Catawba and a member of the Board of Trustees.

A native of Pembroke, NC, Oxendine served as chancellor of UNC Pembroke from

1989-1999. During his tenure there, the institution changed its name from Pembroke

State University, its Carnegie Foundation classification to Comprehensive I, and its ath-

letic conference from NAIA to NCAA II. New degree programs were also added under Ox-

endine’s leadership, including a RN-BSN nursing program (offered jointly with Fayetteville

State University), an MBA program, MA degrees in Agency Counseling and School Coun-

seling, and bachelors degrees in Criminal Justice, Community Health Education, Ameri-

can Studies, Mass Communications, and Birth-Kindergarten. The landscape of the UNC

Pembroke also changed during this period, with new, expanded, and renovated buildings, and an increase in student diversity.

Oxendine graduated from Catawba College in 1952, and earned his master’s of education degree from Boston Univer-

sity in 1953 and his doctorate of education from Boston University in 1959. He worked in automobile factories in Detroit, Michi-

gan, played professional baseball in the Pittsburgh Pirates Minor League System for three years, and served in the U.S. Army

from 1953-1955 in Korea and Hawaii. He was a teacher and athletic coach in the Lynchburg Public Schools in Virginia be-

tween 1955 and 1957, before becoming a Teaching Fellow at Boston University between 1957 and 1959. For 30 years, be-

tween 1959 and 1989, he served as dean and professor at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Oxendine has authored two books: “American Indian Sports Heritage,” two editions (1988/1995), University of Ne-

braska Press; and “Psychology of Motor Learning,” two editions (1968/1984), Prentice-Hall, Incorporated. He also has au-

thored three dozen professional and research articles, and five chapters in books on motor learning.

His honors and accolades are numerous. Catawba honored him in 2007 with its O.B. Michael Award, inducted him

into its Sports Hall of Fame in 1978, and awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Science degree in 1979. Boston University hon-

ored him with its Alumni Award for Distinguished Public Service in 1978, while Temple University awarded him its Stauffer

Award for Outstanding Faculty Service in 1989. He received the R. Tait McKenzie Award from the American Alliance for

Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in 1993 and the Charles D. Henry Award for the enhancement of ethnic mi-

nority members in 1989.

Oxendine serves or has served on the board of directors for the Lost Colony; the Southern Association of Colleges and

Schools’ Commission on Colleges; the National Institute of Health’s Office of Minority Programs; the Fact-Finding Team of the

American Association of State Colleges and Universities; and the Advisory Council for the N.C. Center for Nursing.

Oxendine has been married for 50 years to the former Adrienne McNaughton of Philadelphia and the two are parents

of two adult children, James Thomas and Jean Marie.

Robert J. Casmus arrived at Catawba College in 1990 as head athletic trainer and in-

structor. He oversees the athletic health care and the athletic drug testing and educa-

tion program of the Catawba athletes. A native of Sinking Spring, Pa., Casmus

earned a master's degree in exercise and sports science from the University of Ari-

zona in 1985. During that time, he worked as head athletic trainer at Palo Verde High

School.

He earned a bachelor's degree in health education from Temple University in 1983

and during his time in the Pennsylvania area, he worked as an athletic trainer for St.

John Neumann High School, and as a summer intern for the Philadelphia Eagles. In

addition, Casmus completed the Advanced Athletic Training Program at West

Chester University in 1983 and is a certified EMT in the state of North Carolina.

Prior to his current position, Casmus was the head athletic trainer at Chowan College (1985-1990). He also volunteered at

the 1987 Pan American Games and was an intern at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in 1988. He served on the athletic

training staff for the 1990 Olympic Sports Festival in Minneapolis, MN. Casmus was the head athletic trainer for the United

Football League exhibition game in Taipei, Taiwan in July of 1994. He served as a test site administrator for the BOC and

is currently on the Board of Certification's examination development committee. Bob served two terms as the District III

Representative to the NATA Public Relations Committee from 1998-2005. In June of 2005, Bob was named as the District

III representative to the NATA Research and Education Foundation Board of Directors. He is currently the District III repre-

sentative to the NATA College & University Athletic Trainers Committee. At the NATA National Convention in June 2005,

Casmus received the Athletic Training Service Award from the NATA and the Dan Libera Service Award from the Board of

Certification. Bob was named the North Carolina College & University Athletic Trainer of the Year in 2003 and in 2008. In

2007, he was named the NCAA Division 2 College and University Athletic Trainer of the Year by the NATA. Bob was ap-

pointed to the North Carolina Board of Athletic Trainer Examiners which oversees the licensure and practice act for certi-

fied athletic trainers in North Carolina. Bob also serves as a member of the Catawba College Community Emergency

Response Team (CERT).

Casmus and his wife Teresa reside in Salisbury. Teresa is a pharmacist with the Medicine Shoppe in Salisbury. They have

a son, Will, who was born in March of 1999.

ATHLETIC TRAINING

Lamar DortonAthletic Training Room

The Lamar Dorton athletic training room is located in the Miriam and Robert Hayes Field House, which was com-

pleted in 2002. Football, M/W soccer, M/W lacrosse and softball use this facility to provide the medical care for these six

Catawba sports. Also located in the Hayes Field House includes coaches offices, meeting and classrooms, locker rooms

and a weight room.

Athletes receive injury prevention, assessment, management and rehabilitation here. There are eight treatment ta-

bles and 5 taping tables available. The facility provides state-of-the art modality treatment, which includes ultrasound, elec-

trical stimulation, diathermy, cold laser and a hydrotherapy room for hot or cold whirlpools. In addition, a portion of the facility

is equipped with rehabilitation equipment such as a stationary bike, stair stepper, physioballs and free weights. A separate

room is designated for the Biodex machine, which performs isokinetic muscle testing. Also included is the head athletic

trainer’s office and a private physician’s exam room. 5

Ashley GilroyHEAD COACH

Ashley Gilroy is in her first year as the Lady Indians’ head coach which is theinaugural season for women’s lacrosse at Catawba. The program was firstbrought into fruition in September of 2010 as Gilroy came aboard the nextmonth and began building her team.

Gilroy has previously served as an assistant coach at Randolph-Macon Col-lege as well as with the Shoreham-Wading River CSD Varsity Indoor team.She has also spent time in sales with several sporting goods companies since

her graduation in 2005 from Long Island University-C.W. Post where she earned a degree in criminal justice andbusiness.

While at C.W. Post, Gilroy was a two-time All-America selection and was named to the NCAA All-Tourna-ment team three times as she helped the Eagles to the NCAA II semifinals. Gilroy served as captain her seniorseason.

Gilroy resides in Kannapolis.

ESHUFORD STADIUM

Shuford Stadium has been home to the Catawba men’s lacrosse team since its inception in 1994. The teamused Frock Field for two seasons while the stadium was being reconstructed in 2001 and 2002. The stadium seatsapproximately 2,500 for lacrosse. The Indians grabbed their first-ever lacrosse win at home against Merrimack onMarch 25, 1995.

Among the amenities in the stadium are the Hurley Press Box and the Belk Track. The Hurley Press Box isa four-level facility with the fourth floor serving as the operations level. Nearly 300,000 bricks were used in thenew construction of the press box and the outside wall.

Catawba and Shuford Stadium has played host to four Deep South Conference Tournaments. The Indianshave advanced to the final in three of those; 2004, 2007 and 2010. Since returning to Shuford Stadium for the2003 campaign, Catawba has a home record of 28-35.

PROSPECTIVE STUDENT-ATHLETE ACADEMICSYou are a “prospective student‐ath‐lete” when you start ninth‐gradeclasses.

You become a “recruited student‐ath‐lete” at a particular college if anycoach or representative of the col‐lege’s athletics interest (booster orrepresentative) approaches you (orany member of your family) about en‐rolling and participating in athletics atthat college. Activities by coaches orboosters that cause you to become arecruited prospective student‐athleteare:‐providing you with an official visit;‐visiting you or any other member ofyour family anywhere other than thecollege campus;‐placing more than one telephone callto you or any other member of yourfamily; or‐Signing a National Letter of Intent.

ADMISSIONS

Inquiries regarding admissio n to Catawba College are al-

ways warmly welcomed. If you are interested in joining the

Catawba community you should apply for admission anytime

after your sixth semester of high school.

Catawba follows the usual guidelines for “rolling admis-

sions” and, therefore, has no closing date for accepting ap-

plications. Applying early will ensure you an early response

from the college.

In your application, you are asked to provide a wide va-

riety of information relating to your academic and co-curric-

ular background. This information is used to help determine

your potential to profit from, as well as contribute to, the

Catawba community.

You must complete a minimum of 16 units of high school

course work, 12 of which should be in academic subjects.

The following college preparatory course work is strongly rec-

ommended: four units of English; three units of mathematics

(Algebra I or above); three units of Laboratory Science; three

units of Social Science; and two units of foreign language.

Your admission to Catawba also will be evaluated by class

rank, grade point average, SAT or ACT examination scores,

and academic course selection.
