ADMISSIONS

Inquiries regarding admissio n to Catawba College are al-

ways warmly welcomed. If you are interested in joining the

Catawba community you should apply for admission anytime

after your sixth semester of high school.

Catawba follows the usual guidelines for “rolling admis-

sions” and, therefore, has no closing date for accepting ap-

plications. Applying early will ensure you an early response

from the college.

In your application, you are asked to provide a wide va-

riety of information relating to your academic and co-curric-

ular background. This information is used to help determine

your potential to profit from, as well as contribute to, the

Catawba community.

You must complete a minimum of 16 units of high school

course work, 12 of which should be in academic subjects.

The following college preparatory course work is strongly rec-

ommended: four units of English; three units of mathematics

(Algebra I or above); three units of Laboratory Science; three

units of Social Science; and two units of foreign language.

Your admission to Catawba also will be evaluated by class

rank, grade point average, SAT or ACT examination scores,

and academic course selection.

Dennis DavidsonDirector of Athletics

Dennis Davidson has been director of athletics since May of 1996. He came to Catawba College inJuly 1984 as director of public information and moved totally into sports information one year later.In 1991, Davidson was promoted to assistant to the athletic director, and in 1993, he was promoted to assistantathletic director for game operations, in addition to the sports information duties.

Davidson oversees the entire athletic program at Catawba. He has also been responsible for securingathletic advertising and sponsorships and has had significant roles in Catawba’s Sports Hall of Fame inductions,the South Atlantic Conference Spring Sports Festival and the year-end athletic ceremony. He is a member ofthe National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and was a member of the regional advisorycommittee for NCAA Division II football (2002- 04). Davidson is currently the South Atlantic Conference AD liai-son for baseball and women’s basketball and chairman of the SAC Athletic Directors Council.

Davidson was also highly involved in the planning of the Hayes Field House and Shuford Stadium re-construction. He also has directed the highly popular Sam Moir Christmas Basketball Classic since 1996.A former member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Davidson was chairman of the NAIA District 26 SIDs and the Car-olinas Conference Awards Committee for three years (1986-89). He was voted by his peers as District 26 SID of the Year for 1987-88 and 1992-93.

Born in Statesville, but reared in Salisbury, Davidson graduated in 1977 from West Rowan High School, where he was a four-year lettermanin baseball, earning All-North Piedmont Conference honors as a senior.

Davidson earned a bachelor’s degree in English at Catawba in 1981, working as a part-time writer at The Salisbury Post during his collegeyears. He actually began at The Post as a 16-year-old sportswriter in 1975.

A member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church, Davidson is president of the Westside Pool Association. He is also a member of the PTAat Southeast Middle School.

Davidson resides in Salisbury with his wife, Toni, a registered nurse at Lexington Memorial Hospital. They have three daughters, Bethany(22), a Catawba graduate, Katie (19), a sophomore at Catawba, and Carrie (14).

Dr. Joseph B. Oxendine, chancellor emeritus of UNC Pembroke, is currently serving as the

interim president of Catawba College. Oxendine took over in March of 2011. Oxendine is a 1952

alumnus of Catawba and a member of the Board of Trustees.

A native of Pembroke, NC, Oxendine served as chancellor of UNC Pembroke from 1989-

1999. During his tenure there, the institution changed its name from Pembroke State University,

its Carnegie Foundation classification to Comprehensive I, and its athletic conference from NAIA

to NCAA II. New degree programs were also added under Oxendine’s leadership, including a

RN-BSN nursing program (offered jointly with Fayetteville State University), an MBA program, MA

degrees in Agency Counseling and School Counseling, and bachelors degrees in Criminal Jus-

tice, Community Health Education, American Studies, Mass Communications, and Birth-Kinder-

garten. The landscape of the UNC Pembroke also changed during this period, with new,

expanded, and renovated buildings, and an increase in student diversity.

Oxendine graduated from Catawba College in 1952, and earned his master’s of education degree from Boston University in

1953 and his doctorate of education from Boston University in 1959. He worked in automobile factories in Detroit, Michigan, played

professional baseball in the Pittsburgh Pirates Minor League System for three years, and served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 in

Korea and Hawaii. He was a teacher and athletic coach in the Lynchburg Public Schools in Virginia between 1955 and 1957, before

becoming a Teaching Fellow at Boston University between 1957 and 1959. For 30 years, between 1959 and 1989, he served as dean

and professor at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Oxendine has authored two books: “American Indian Sports Heritage,” two editions (1988/1995), University of Nebraska

Press; and “Psychology of Motor Learning,” two editions (1968/1984), Prentice-Hall, Incorporated. He also has authored three dozen

professional and research articles, and five chapters in books on motor learning.

His honors and accolades are numerous. Catawba honored him in 2007 with its O.B. Michael Award, inducted him into its

Sports Hall of Fame in 1978, and awarded him an Honorary Doctor of Science degree in 1979. Boston University honored him with its

Alumni Award for Distinguished Public Service in 1978, while Temple University awarded him its Stauffer Award for Outstanding Fac-

ulty Service in 1989. He received the R. Tait McKenzie Award from the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation

and Dance in 1993 and the Charles D. Henry Award for the enhancement of ethnic minority members in 1989.

Oxendine serves or has served on the board of directors for the Lost Colony; the Southern Association of Colleges and

Schools’ Commission on Colleges; the National Institute of Health’s Office of Minority Programs; the Fact-Finding Team of the Ameri-

can Association of State Colleges and Universities; and the Advisory Council for the N.C. Center for Nursing.

Oxendine has been married for 50 years to the former Adrienne McNaughton of Philadelphia and the two are parents of two

adult children, James Thomas and Jean Marie.

Stacy is in her first year as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Catawba

College. In addition to her medical coverage for the softball team, she

also assists with the football team which includes both home and away

practice and game coverage.

Rider earned a Bachelor of Science degree in athletic training from

Messiah College in Harrisburg, PA in May of 2011. She worked with nu-

merous sports at Messiah, including field hockey, baseball and wrestling. She also helped the staff at

Gettsburg College in football her Junior year. .

Rider plans to attend James Madison University for her masters in athletic training next year.

Room

The Lamar Dorton athletic training room is located in the Miriam and Robert Hayes Field House, which

was completed in 2002. Football, M/W soccer, M/W lacrosse and softball use this facility to provide the

medical care for these six Catawba sports. Also located in the Hayes Field House includes coaches of-

fices, meeting and classrooms, locker rooms and a weight room.

Athletes receive injury prevention, assessment, management and rehabilitation here. There are

eight treatment tables and 5 taping tables available. The facility provides state-of-the art modality treat-

ment, which includes ultrasound, electrical stimulation, diathermy, cold laser and a hydrotherapy room

for hot or cold whirlpools. In addition, a portion of the facility is equipped with rehabilitation equipment

such as a stationary bike, stair stepper, physioballs and free weights. A separate room is designated for

the Biodex machine, which performs isokinetic muscle testing. Also included is the head athletic

trainer’s office and a private physician’s exam room.

Nan Whitley

Head Coach

Nan Whitley enters her 29th season as coach of the women's softball pro-

gram at Catawba. During seven seasons of slow pitch softball (1983-89),

her teams won 69 percent of their games (178-79). Whitley, with the assis-

tance of her husband, Cecil, won five slow-pitch conference or district

championships in the 1980s. In 1990, Catawba and the entire South At-

lantic Conference moved to fast-pitch competition.

In 20 years of fast-pitch competition, the

Lady Indians have posted a 434-511-3, including a

school-record 41 wins in 2007. Catawba had recorded a then school-

record 28 wins in both 2004 and 2006. Overall, Coach Whitley's record

stands at 615-589-3.

Over the years, the Whitleys and their players have developed family-

like relationships. The 1987 team stands out more than any other, due to

its 39-7 record. The 39 victories are the most in a single season for any

sport in the history of Catawba College athletics, although the volleyball

team equaled the mark in 1992.

record and a Deep

South Association

championship in 1988.

Due to her outstanding accomplishments as a two-sport athlete and coach at Catawba, Whit-

ley became the first woman inducted into the school's Sports Hall of Fame on April 3, 1993.

Nan and Cecil reside in Salisbury. They have a daughter Adrian, an assistant with the softball pro-

gram, and a son, Alex.

SHANE PRESCOTT

Assistant Coach

Shane Prescott begins his sixth season as an assistant coach with the Catawba

College softball team in 2010. Prescott came to Catawba from Pfeiffer Univer-

sity where he was with the Falcon program for six seasons and was head coach

the last four years.

A 1995 graduate of Randolph Community College, Prescott earned an associate

degree in applied science. He graduated in 1999 from Blue Ridge Healing Arts

Academy with a license to practice massage and bodywork therapy.

Prescott resides in Concord with his wife, Jennifer. They have two daughters, Adda (7) and Emme (2).

ADRIAN GANTT

Pitching Coach

Adrian Gantt is in her 12th season as an assistant with the Catawba College

softball program. She serves as the pitching coach. For four seasons, Gantt

was the head coach of the Catawba field hockey team.

A 1998 graduate of Catawba, Gantt earned a bachelor of arts degree in biology.

Gantt received a master of science degree in exercise science at Appalachian

State in 2000.

Gantt was a two-sport athlete at Catawba, playing four years of field hockey and softball. She was

a two-time All-American in field hockey and twice earned All-South Atlantic Conference honors

in softball. Gantt received the Lomax Award for Catawba’s top senior female athlete in 1998.

At East Rowan High School, Gantt earned nine letters. She earned all-county and all-conference

honors in cross country and helped the softball team to a pair of state tournament appearances.

Gantt and her husband, Jim, reside in Salisbury with their infant daughter Blakely born Dec. 7,

2011.. Jim is the Catawba head baseball coach.

ference at first base ... started all 51 games, posting

a .995 fielding percentage with just two errors

after moving to the new position ... tied school

record with 17 doubles which ranked second in

the SAC and 40th in NCAA II ... was second on team

with 36 RBI and third with seven home runs ... had

three hits in both games of doubleheader vs. Ander-

son with eight RBI, including a career-high five in

game two, earning her SAC Player of the Week hon-

ors on M/28 ... connected on grand slam in against

Georgia College to complete opening day sweep ...

hit .362 with runners in scoring position ... also led

team with 19 walks ...

2010: Played in 47 games ... 29 of her 41 starts came at

third base ... delivered four hits, including a home

run, with a pair of RBI in win over East Stroudsburg

... also homered in win over Limestone ... collected

three hits against Glenville State in opener of dou-

bleheader ... drew 15 walks and had nearly a .360 on-

base percentage ... committed just six errors on the

year ...

2009: Had starts in 12 of 22 games ... nine starts came

at third base ... hit .282 with three doubles and a

home run ... home run came in win over Tusculum

where she had two hits and four RBI ... also had

two hits and scored twice in win over Coker ... had

.391 on-base percentage and batted .381 with run-

ners on base ...
