    CRAFTS FROM KAMONYI

    In our partners Healing and ReconciliationMinistry projects a remarkable thing ishappening. Released genocide prisonerstogether with survivors from the veryfamilies they decimated are comingtogether to repent, forgive and bereconciled. As a practical way of developingunity and creating income they have set upincome generating projects, among which

    is the craft making group at Kamonyi.

    NDERA BASKET-MAKING GROUP

    Evaste Mukayubahiro is a member of the Solace Ministriesgroups at Ndera which makes baskets for this catalogue. Herhusband was killed in the genocide and she has the addedresponsibility of caring for two orphans she has adopted. Evastesays In my life I did not esteem myself because I was handicappedand suffering very much. I came to Solace and got hope. Theycomforted me and showed me love and now I comfort others.There are 35 women in the group, 15 make baskets and the other20 are handicapped or elderly. The money made from these craftsis shared throughout the group.

    Craft making at Gatenga

    Gatenga is one of the poorer areasof Rwandas capital, Kigali. Themajority of the crafts in thiscatalogue come from the Gatengacraft-making group of survivors, runby our partners Solace Ministries.

    The widows at the group use awide variety of raw materials,such as sisal plants, fabric from the

    local market, recycled calendars,sacking, marsh grass, banana leavesand beans.

    The key is their skill in taking thisdiverse range of materials andusing generations-old Rwandanskills to weave, cut, shape and putt o g e t h e r t h e s e p r o d u c t s .Combined with an eagerness toinnovate and please, the result is a

    selection of beautiful andinteresting crafts.

    A new income source for thesurvivors in the Gatenga craftgroup is to teach visiting groupsthe skills of Rwandan craft making.

    NATURAL BEAUTY

    The necklace below is made usinga combination of small beans andbeads. The beans are threaded

    onto the necklace when they arefresh, then allowed to dry, beforebeing painted and lacquered. The

    necklace (120cm long) is availablein several different colours.

    Other new items include severalnecklaces made of wooden beads,bangle-style wooden bracelets, inan exciting range of colours and

    designs, sisal earrings and a spiralbracelet made with paper beads.

    Uduseke

    The agaseke (plural = uduseke) is thequintessentially Rwandan craft. Afterthe genocide weaving groups fromboth ethnic groups worked togetherand the baskets became known asPeace baskets. Made by sewing sisalfibre around a papyrus frame theywere traditionally used to store

    jewellery and food. They were also

    given to the groom from the bridesfamily - the lid signifying the womenwas pure. Today they are recognizedacross the world as one of Rwandasfinest craft products. Use for storage ordecoration.
