Shivaratri is the night when Lord Shiva is said to have performed the Tandava Nritya or the dance of primordial creation, preservation and destruction. According to the Puranas, during the Samudra Manthan, a pot of poison emerged from the ocean. The gods and the demons were terrified as it could destroy the entire world. When they ran to Shiva for help, he in order to protect the world, drank the deadly poison but held it in his throat instead of swallowing it. Shivaratri celebrates this event by which Shiva saved the world.

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesh. Parvati created Ganesh out of sandalwood paste and breathed life into the figure. She then set him to stand guard at her door while she bathed. However, while she bathed, Lord Shiva returned and as Ganesh didn't know him, he didn't allow him to enter. Lord Shiva became enraged and severed the head of the child and entered his house. After realizing that he had beheaded his own son, Lord Shiva fixed the head of an elephant in place of Ganesh's head.
