CORE ARTISTIC VALUES
ARTISTRYThe Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra is committed to presenting performances of the highest standard in which we make every note matter. Our musicians, conductors and staff recognize their roles as stewards of musical art and fully commit their efforts in the service of music. We commit the necessary resources of time and money to provide our performers with the best possible conditions to succeed in their efforts.
INNOVATIONWe embrace innovation and creativity in our programs in a way that enhances the musical experience for the audience, making it stronger, deeper and more meaningful.
ENGAGEMENTWe foster a sense of two-way interaction with the Boulder community and our patrons. People are stimulated to listen actively and challenged to bring something of their own experience and understanding to the act of listening, and come away from our concerts feeling that they’ve heard music in a deep and personal way. We cultivate a sense of community among our audience members by facilitating opportunities for social interaction, and we interface with multiple constituencies in our community, including public schools, arts organizations, the University of Colorado, and both traditional and non-traditional audiences.
CONNECTIONThe Boulder Phil is in the connections business, and nothing is more important to us that the bond between our orchestra and our unique community. Our programming strives to connect people to orchestral music, to connect orchestral music to our shared human experience, and to connect people to one another through orchestral music.
GROWTHBuilding on the strong artistic foundations that he has fostered over six seasons with the orchestra, Michael Butterman sees a very exciting future for the Boulder Phil. Increasing the number of Masterworks concerts, incorporating rich multimedia presentations, building the orchestra’s technical and artistic capacity, engaging top soloists that will increase our audiences…these are just a few of the ways in which your partnership with the Boulder Phil will help us to succeed in realizing our vision for artistic and financial growth in the coming years.

CURRENT PROGRAMS
If you’ve attended a Boulder Phil concert recently, you know firsthand the quality performance experience we deliver. With some of the region’s best professional musicians on the roster, and world-class guest artists taking the stage, the Boulder Phil is truly a cultural asset to the community. Each season, we present a full Masterworks classical concert series, multiple performances of our Discovery Concert program, four performances of the Nutcracker in collaboration with the Boulder Ballet, and special pops productions such as a tribute to the Beatles and the aerial magic of Cirque de la Symphonie.
MASTERWORKS CONCERTS feature time-tested masterpieces as well as engaging new works, with a focus on reflecting Colorado’s own creative community through our selection of guest artists, invited composers and collaborating organizations. The Boulder Phil performs primarily at the historic Macky Auditorium on the CU-Boulder campus. We also repeat selected concerts in communities outside of Boulder County, including the Arvada Center for the Arts, the Lakewood Cultural Center, the Newman Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Denver, and the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek.
DISCOVERY CONCERTS bring the magic of the live orchestra to 4th and 5th grade students. Teachers prepare students with a specially designed Curriculum Guide, and conductor Michael Butterman conducts in-school clinics to introduce students to the sights and sounds they will experience at the final performance. With generous funding received from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, we have successfully expanded this program to serve thousands of students across three counties.
SPECIAL PRODUCTIONS include consistent sellout performances of the much-loved annual co-production of the Nutcracker with the Boulder Ballet and the Boulder Children’s Chorale. Our concert season also typically includes pops concerts that celebrate the musical greats of other genres, including Louis Armstrong, John Denver and the Beatles.
MICHAEL BUTTERMAN, MUSIC DIRECTOR-CONDUCTOR
Making his mark as a model for today’s conductors, Michael Butterman is recognized for his commitment to creative artistry, innovative programming, and audience and community engagement.
He is in his seventh season as Music Director for both the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra and the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, and is in his 13th season as Principal Conductor for Education and Outreach for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the first position of its kind in the United States. Beginning with the 2009-2010 season, he assumed the additional post of Resident Conductor for the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. This past season was highlighted by his debut with the renowned Cleveland Orchestra.
The Shreveport Times praised Michael Butterman’s “successful risk-taking,” noting a “season full of buzzing lobbies, standing ovations and full houses,” while the Daily Camera proclaimed, “Michael Butterman was clearly No. 1 on the classical-music scene in Boulder.”
