Letter from the Minister

Dear Friends

Our belief in One God: Father, Son and HolySpirit, is given to us freely – a gift we can acceptor deny. We are shortly to celebrate Easter,a time of great joy and the highlight of our faith; a time when weremember the sacrifice made willingly for us so that we might knowthe presence of God for eternity. A sacrifice we can have faith in,believe in, and accept – or we can ignore it, deny it, and pretend itdidn’t happen. But if we accept it, then we must respond to it; notresponding to such a gift is surely to deny it.

What should our response be? How can we show our acceptance ofthe gift so freely given?

A phrase I have used before is one of ‘being Easter People’, beingpeople who live out faith in our Resurrected Lord all year round, notjust at Easter. And part of our response to Easter must be to tellothers of the wonderful gift God waits to bless them with – the giftof faith. A priceless gift that blesses all who receive it, for as thatwell known verse from John 3:16 tells us: “God so loved the worldthat he gave his only Son, that whosoever believes in Him will notperish but have eternal life.”

God so loves each one of us that He gave us His only Son, and wesurely cannot ignore that gift, any more than we can ignore His love.Sharing such a wonderful gift is not as hard as we make it out to be;our natural British reserve holds us back from being as open andhonest about our faith as we should be, prevents our sharing thegood news.

As Easter People, let us make the promise to tell one person thismonth about God’s love and God’s promise to each of us – for He willalways be with us, eternally.

Sue

PRESENTATION FOR MARCH 2012 CHURCH PARADE RE GOATSThe Scout Association has 3 Partnership Awards that Section memberscan achieve. The Awards encourage a Section to link up withanother Section within their own Group or another Group ororganization on a project to help other people. They could also linkup with a Partner outside of Scouting e.g. UNICEF.

The Cubs chose the International Friendship Award (IFA). During one ofour meetings last term we decided to raise money by having a homemade cake stall to buy a goat for a family possibly in Africa. Weasked the Beavers to join us; all Cubs and Beavers who took partwould earn their IFA. For our October Church Parade the Cubs &Beavers made cakes to sell after the Service. Those who were unableto make cakes, raised money by doing some small jobs for familymembers – one cleaned his brothers shoes for a week! I am pleasedto confirm that ALL Cubs & Beavers who were with me last term tookpart. £181.00 was raised selling cakes & a further £47.50 from Cubsand Beavers who did ‘odd jobs’, making a grand total of £228.50 !!

The initial idea was to involve OXFAM. However, they were unable totell me when they would be able to purchase any goats or whichcountry they would go to. By chance, another Scout Leader told methat her friend Karen was involved in helping to educate children viaGAMBLE - ‘Gambia Building Links in Education’ & their school hadbeen thinking of purchasing a goat but could not afford to do so. Icontacted Karen who explained that she and her husband oftentravelled out to the school in Gambia and would put my proposal tothe head teacher that our Cubs & Beavers wanted to purchase agoat for them, possibly two, a male and female – he was absolutelydelighted. This was before I realized how much we had raised; wecould buy a goat (slightly more expensive as she is pregnant), her twokids & some feed. We have some money left over to go towardsanother goat when the school is ready, or, in some other way tobenefit the schoolchildren. The school built a goat-shed and theschoolchildren are helping to look after them. By being at the schoolthe goats are protected & cared for properly - if the goats weregiven to the families they would probably be stolen. When I wastalking to Karen, it was decided that the Cubs could name a malegoat & the Beavers a female goat. Lots of names were suggested. They had to be names that the Gambian schoolchildren could relateto. Amy was decided for the female, & Ben & Bill for the two malekids. At the head teacher’s request a photo of all Cubs & Beaversinvolved will be given to him to show the schoolchildren who hadbought the goats for them.

The group, including friends from Hayes Free Church, EmmanuelWest Wickham, Elmers End Free Church and others who went onthe pilgrimage to the Holy Land in November 2011 met for areunion in February 2012 and we watched an excellent DVD of thetrip put together by Alan Deverson (a member at Emmanuel) withhis usual aplomb and humour.

We thought the members of the wider churches may wish to see theDVD and so it will be shown at Emmanuel, West Wickham on theWednesday of Holy Week (4th April) at 8pm. It will be free ofcharge but there will be a retiring collection for the Bethlehem ArabRehabilitation Centre which we visited during our time in Israel. TheCentre is to be Emmanuel’s Overseas Charity for 2012/13.

.... Continued from page 11This is a short report from Karen’s Husband. We were asked by a cub pack to buy a pair of breeding goats for

poor people in Africa. After lots of discussion with our head teacher we realised that it wouldbe necessary to also supply food for the goats for them to eat untilthe first sale of a goat which would buy more food & give some fundsto help the poor children afford to attend school. Initially we werelooking for a male & female to breed & produce kids. We went tolook at available goats. Some did not look very healthy & otherslooked old. Then we were introduced to someone who was selling afemale goat. When we saw her we found that she was very healthy &obviously able to breed as we were told that she had recently had 2male kids. He wanted more money than we had, as we still had tobuy a male. We were then told that the kids were included in the sale& she was already expecting more. This sounded like a goodproposition as we would have 3 goats & hopefully when the kids areborn we would have another female. If not we could sell one of themales & buy a female with the proceeds. So we decided that this iswhat we would do & agreed a price with the owner.

The next day I went with Ebrima, who works in our school, to collect thegoat. We stopped to buy a short length of rope . It was quite hard tocatch her and eventually the owner enticed her to come and eatsome food. He grabbed her & slipped the rope around her neck.

We shook hands with the previous owner & left with the goat in tow.She seemed quite happy to come, but I asked Ebrima about her kids& he said not to worry about it. Sure enough, as soon as we went outof sight of the kids they came scampering after us & followed us allthe way back to the school. We put them in a nice large airy shed fortheir new home, gave them some food & water & they soon settled in.When I left to come back to the UK three days later they were veryhappy, had settled in & would come towards us for a stroke. Wewould now like some names for them please. We are returning toThe Gambia in March & will then let you know how they are. It wouldbe good if we could have a picture of your Cub Pack to take with usso that the Gambian children could see who provided the Goats.

The man in the picture feeding the goat is the previous owner, theman leading her away is Ebrima who works at the school & the thirdpicture is of Amy and her 2 kids Ben & Bill. (The pictures are on page 7)

OUR WELL-BEING---------------------------------

Some common winter ailmentsThe following are the last in the list. Hopefully, with spring in the air wewill not suffer from them.

Sore ThroatsAlmost always caused by a virus, sore throats can nevertheless beaggravated by going quickly from a warm indoor environment to theicy-cold outdoors.

Gargling with warm, salty water is a quick way of making a sore throatfeel better. It doesn't kill the infection but has anti-inflammatoryproperties that can soothe the pain. Dissolve a teaspoon of salt in aglass of cooling boiled water.

Heart AttacksObviously this is quite a rare one, but heart attacks do become morecommon in the colder months - when the heart is working harder tokeep your body warm and blood pressure can be higher.

If at risk, stay indoors on cold days and wrap up warm when you dogo out with a hat and scarf.

FluThis can range from being highly unpleasant to being a killer, withpregnant women and the elderly being particularly at-risk.

If you think you might be vulnerable to flu see your GP and ask aboutgetting the flu jab. It lasts a year and gives good protection againstflu. The vaccine is updated each year as flu bugs adapt and theprevious vaccine decreases in effectiveness.

Card fraud telephone scamImportant message from your local Safer Neighbourhoods team

-------------------------------------In the news (07/03/12) it was stated that card fraud has fallen to its lowest level in 11years. This is positive news. However, we want to highlight the need to be evervigilant to new and existing card fraud scams such as the one detailed below. How does this scam work? You receive a telephone call from someone claiming to be from your bank.He or she will say their systems have spotted a fraudulent payment on your card orthat your card is due to expire and needs replacing. You may be asked to ring back using the telephone number on the back of yourcard - which further convinces you that the call is genuine. However, the caller keepsthe line open at their end so, when you make the call, you are unknowinglyconnected straight back to the fraudster. Then, by seeming to offer assistance, the fraudster tries to gain your trust. In mostcases you are asked to ‘cancel’ your existing card or ‘activate’ or ‘authorise’ areplacement card by keying your PIN into the handset of your phone. The fraudster then poses as a bank representative who agrees to collect your cardfrom your home, sometimes offering you a replacement card, which is a fake.In some cases a genuine courier company is hired to pick up the card from yourhome address. The victim will have been asked to place the card into an envelopeready for collection. Once they have your card and PIN the fraudster uses them tospend your money.A variation of the scam involves the fraudster ringing a prospective victim andclaiming to be from the police – again with the aim of going to the victim’s home tocollect the card and PIN.What can I do to avoid being a victim of this scam?

· Neither your bank nor the police would ever ring you and state that they arecoming to your home to pick up your card, so never hand it over to anyone whocomes to collect it.

· Your bank will NEVER ask you to authorise anything by entering your PIN into thetelephone handset.

· NEVER share your PIN with anyone – the only times you should use your PIN is at acash machine or when you use a chip and PIN machine in a shop / restaurant.

I think I might have been a victim of this scam - what should I do?If the criminals are nearby ring the Police immediately on 999, otherwise report thecrime to your local Police via 101.If you think you have been the victim of a fraud or scam of this nature you shouldalso call your bank or card company immediately Amanda Evans - Operations ManagerTel: 020 8658 7168.
