One Team, One Mission In the long, remarkable,

history of the YMCA in the Twin Cities—a history older than

Minnesota itself—there’s never been a year like 2012.

It was the inaugural year of the YMCA of the Greater Twin

Cities. The beginning of our adventure as one united team

focused on one compelling mission.

Change brings challenge and transition. It also makes us ask big

questions as an organization. Who are we? What are we here

for? What difference do we want to make?

We’re asking those questions about the YMCA of the Greater

Twin Cities. We’re invigorated by the answers! We’re a nonprofit

team that exists to help people of all ages thrive at every

stage of life. The Y has done that for generations. Now, with

an excellent start in 2012, we seek to bring that purpose and

vision to the people of the Twin Cities metro area in ways

that will impact their lives as never before. That’s the journey we’ve begun. Join us!

Glen GundersonPresident/CEO, YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities

The YMCA of the Greater Twin

Cities (YGTC) nurtures the potential

of children and teens, contributes to

better health for people of all ages,

and strengthens our community,

by serving nearly 250,000

members and participants across

the Twin Cities metro and western

Wisconsin. In 2012, we welcomed

17.5% more new members.

YGTC became one of 17 Y

Associations selected to deliver

the YMCA Diabetes Prevention

Program funded by a three-year,

$12 million dollar national

grant.

Page 3: 2012 annual report

Our Y core teen development

programs—Youth in Government,

Leaders Club, Y Start, and

Multicultural Achievers—made

young people better leaders,

provided practical support (and

hope) for academic success to first-

generation college students, and

provided safe, positive fun to more

than 3,500 young people.

A Shared Journey People connect with the Y in all

kinds of ways and places. In a canoe. At a child care center.

On a treadmill. In a swimming pool. At an afterschool center.

The connections are many, the vision is one: to help people

be vibrant, healthy, active, whole—at every stage of life.

That is made possible by our many friends who contribute

generously to our annual campaign and other fundraising

efforts. Thank you!

Celebrate the good things we all do and the many lives we

touch. This is the journey we share!

Oszaldo (Ozzie), 19, loves YMCA wilderness camping. Ozzie

has gone on several canoe trips at YMCA Camp Menogyn

over the last three years. Last year he participated in two

Menogyn wilderness canoe sessions. On the first trip,

Ozzie was a leader-in-training, teaching camping and group

management skills to four Latino youth. “My goal is to be

a Menogyn summer staff member so I can pass along what

I’ve learned to others.”

In 2012, the Y Beacons/School

Success initiative engaged more

young people from low-income

communities than ever before,

providing academic support, places

to create, safe and welcoming

environments, and a variety of

enrichment opportunities. That

was true for more than

2,500 kids.

A child whose family can’t afford to

send them to Y camp misses out on

so much: enjoying nature, making

friends, personal growth.

For 1,500 kids last summer, that

was NOT a missed opportunity—

Y donors made it possible for all

of them to go to camp through

financial assistance. Thank you!

YMCA Youth Intervention

homeless prevention efforts took

responsibility for a site-based

transitional living program that

offers housing options in Anoka

County for 18-24 year-old single

mothers.

Page 6: 2012 annual report

We cared for, played with,

nurtured, and developed the

potential of nearly 5,000 kids

through YMCA School-Aged Care

programs.

Our “Kids to Camp” campaign

raised more than $50,000 and

sent 237 kids from our Beacons

Centers to Y Day Camps.

Nearly 2,300 young people,

the majority from urban and low-

income backgrounds, are safer

around water after receiving YMCA

water safety lessons in 2012.

“I love coming to the Y!” says Marie. “My

kids have a wonderful time in childcare. The staff members

are great. They make my kids feel so welcome. The programs

are fun, they do Spanish, crafts, gym time and stories. I love

my fitness classes, too. It is fun to see people of all ages,

from all walks of life, coming to the Y. At the Y you come as

you are, meet great friends, have a healthy workout, and

leave feeling great. I love coming to the Y!”

“I love to swim,” says Dean. “I keep track, and I’ve

logged 350 miles since 2004. I’m in the pool five days a week

now. Over the years I’ve had two heart attacks, prostate

cancer, and an aneurysm repaired—so now I figure I’m good

for another 100,000 miles! My goal is to live to be 100 with

a good quality of life, and the Y is now helping me on the

way. In my volunteer work as a senior companion, twice a

week I bring a woman who is 91 years young to the Y where

she does 45 minutes of exercise. Yes, we all love the Y!”

Page 7: 2012 annual report

Over 80 homeless youth in

Ramsey County were connected to

crucial resources, including stable

housing, food support and basic

needs, through an expansion of

YMCA street-based outreach into

that county.

We serve over 500 youth in our

homeless youth programs each

year throughout Anoka, Hennepin

and Ramsey counties
