JAMES REID A national champion and national coach of the year, James Reid enters his 13th season as the head men’s and women’s track coach at Angelo State University where he oversees the shot put, discus, hammer throw, pole vault, long hurdles, as well as the 4x400 relays and assists in the mutli-events. He was selected as head coach in 1999 after six seasons as an assistant coach. The native of Sweeny, Texas, also assisted long-time ASU track coach David Noble as a graduate assistant for two years and a volunteer assistant for four years prior to being named a full-time assistant. The2011seasonbroughtanotherfirstforReidandtheAngeloStatetrack&fieldprogram.AndriaNusseyprovidedthefirstNCAADivisionIIIndoorChampionshipinthe800MandtheRambelle’swonitsthird-straightLSCOutdoorChampionship.ItisthefirsttimetheRambelleshavewonthree-straightconferencetitles.TheRamswereimpressivefinishinginsecondattheLSCOutdoorChampionshipsanditmarksthe34thtimeASU has been in one of the top two spots. ReidwasnamedLSCWomen’sCoachoftheYearfortheeighth time in his career. The Rams and Belles combined for eightAll-AmericanhonorsandnineLSCChampionshipsduringthe indoor and outdoor seasons. Two seasons ago, Reid led the Angelo State women’s outdoortrackandfieldteamtoitsfirst-everNationalChampionshipandguidedthe Rams to their 26th top-10 National Teamfinish.ReidwasnamedNationalandRegionalWomen’sTrackandFieldCoachoftheYearafterleadingthe Belles to their spectacular run and championshipfinish. OntopofleadinghisBellessquadtoaNationalChampionship,Reidalsocoached the 2011 National and Regional FieldAthleteoftheYear,AishaAdams,aswellasCelethiaByrdwhowasnamedtheRegionalTrackAthleteoftheYear. Reid was also instrumental in coaching two individual National ChampionsinAishaAdamsintheheptathlonandCelethiaByrdinthe400,aswellas4x400NationalChampionrelayteamwhichconsistedofChrystalRuiz,AndriaNussey,KrisCrockettandCelethiaByrd.HecoachedtheBellesto12individualAll-Americancertificatesas well as a pair of All-American relays and led the Rams to four individual All-AmericancertificatesandtwoAll-American relay teams. Reid’s Belles repeated as Lone StarConferenceChampions,whilethe Rams were the runner-up team in theLSC.HecoachedtheBellesto10individualLSCChampionshipsandonerelay victory, while guiding the Rams to a pairofindividualLSCtitlesandtworelaywins. In2010,Reid’scoachedAdamstoLSCWomen’sAll-SportAthleteoftheYearhonors.Reidalsohadthehonor of coaching four of his Belles in Adams, Ruiz, Nussey and Byrd, as well as James Howell, to the USA National Championships.HecoachedAdamsallthe way to Germany where she helped Team USA place second in the Thorpe Cup. Inhisfirst12seasonsasheadcoach, Reid has led the Rams track teamtofivetop10overallfinishesattheNCAADivisionIIOutdoor

OneofthehighlightsofReid’scoachingcareercamein2004,whenheledtheRambellestotheirfirst-everLoneStarConferencechampionship,snappingtheNCAA-recordstreakof19consecutivetitlesbyrivalAbileneChristian.Forhisefforts,ReidwashonoredbyhiscoachingpeersastheLSCandNCAAD-IISouthCentralRegionWomen’sTrackCoachoftheYear. AnotherhighpointforReidcamein2003,whenhecoachedAmberMillerandLaTashaMosleytoappearancesattheUSANationalTrackandFieldChampionships.TheywerejustthesecondandthirdwomeninschoolhistorytoeverqualifyfortheUSAmeet,withMillerfinishinginthetop-10inthejavelinandMosleyfinishinginthetop-20inthetriplejump.ThedynamicduocappedofftheirstorybookASUcareerswithahostofawards,includingNCAAD-IISouthCentralRegionFemaleAthleteoftheYearhonorsforMillerandLSCFemaleTrackAthleteandFemaleAthleteoftheYearhonorsforMosley. In2005,ReidagaingarneredLSCWomen’sTrackCoachoftheYearhonorsastheRambellesdefendedtheirLSCtitleinSanAngelo.AlissaMillersweptfiveindividualeventstowintheLSC’sDavidNobleFieldAthleteoftheYearAward.Shealsobecameonlythesecond‘BelletobenamedtheNCAAD-IISouthCentralRegionFemaleAthleteoftheYear.That year also brought another proud moment for Reid when former ASU national champion AmyBippert-BohenskywasinductedintotheNCAAD-IITrackandFieldHallofFame.In2008,ReidcoachedanotherNCAAD-IISouthCentralRegionFemaleAthleteoftheYearinAdreeLakey.LakeyclaimedLSCtitlesinthreeeventsandwentontocollectthreemoreAll-Americacertificatesaswellasanationalchampionshipinthediscusthrow.Thatmarked the second straight season that she earned a throwing national title after winning the 2007NCAAD-IIchampionshipinthehammerthrow.Followingthe2008season,ReidwasonceagainnamedtheLSCWomen’sTrackCoachoftheYear.
Inthespringof2009,AngeloStatehostedtheNCAAD-IINationalOutdoorChampionshipsforthefifthtime,andtheRamsandRambellesposted22All-Americaperformances and two more national championships. Reid mentored Adams to the second heptathlon national championship in program history while coaching thrower Adree Lakey to a third-career national title, this time in the shot put. He was recognized by his peers as the NCAAD-IINationalWomen’sTrack&FieldCoachoftheYearfor2009. There would also be a host of honors for two of Reid’s prize pupils. Adams was namedtheNCAAD-IINationalFemaleFieldAthleteoftheYearandqualifiedfortheUSANationalTrackandFieldChampionships.Withhereighth-placefinishattheUSAmeet,AdamswaschosentorepresenttheU.S.A.attheThorpeCupinMarburg,Germany.LakeyfinishedhercareerasthemostdecoratedRambelleinprogramhistorywiththreenationaltitlesand11All-Americacertificates.Shewasalsoafinalistfortheprestigious2009HondaAward,giventothetopfemalestudent-athleteinNCAAD-II. AdamswasinvitedtocompeteinThorpeCupcompetitionagaininthesummerof2010 after capturing her second heptathlon national title that spring. Ironically,despitecomingfromanimpressivetrackfamily,Reiddidnotstartouttobecomeatrackcoachorevenatrackathlete.HebeganhistenureatAngeloStatein1986as a member of the Rams football team, but his career was cut short by an illness in his freshman season. Noble invited him to help with the track team and he has been on the track ever since. Reid’s father, Doug, was the head track coach at Sweeny High School, where he ledtheBulldogstoastatechampionshipin1992andrunner-upfinishesin1993and2001,beforeretiringfromcoaching.Hisolderbrother,Will,coachesinHarperaftercoachingatKerrville’sTivyHighSchoolandWaterValleyHighSchool. Reid received his undergraduate degree from ASU in 1991 and his master’s degree ineducationin1993.Inadditiontohisdutiesasheadtrackcoach,ReidisASU’sassistantathletic director. He and his wife, Nina, have three children, Jacob, Kyla and J.D.

TOM DIBBERN A former student-athlete and long-time assistant track and fieldcoachatAngeloState,TomDibbernhasalsobeentheheadcross country coach since 2011. He is the primary coach for the RamsandRambelleslongjumpers,triplejumpersandhighjumpers,andalsocoachesthejavelinthrowers,shortsprinters,shorthurdlers,sprint relay teams and multi-event athletes. DuringhiscareeratASU,DibbernhascoachedtwoNCAADivisionIInationalchampions,31individualsandthreerelayteamswho achieved All-America status, and 29 athletes and one relay teamwhowonLoneStarConferencetitles.Hewasnamedthe2011NCAAD-IIMen’sRegionalAssistantCoachoftheYearafterwinningtheWomen’sNationalAssistantCoachoftheYearhonorsin2009and 2010. UnderDibbern’sguidancein2011,ASU’sChrystalRuizplacedsixthandsetaMexiconationalrecordintheheptathlonatthePan American Games. She also achieved All-America status in 2011 witharunner-upfinishinthepentathlonattheNCAAD-IIIndoorNationalChampionships,andagainin2012withathird-placefinishat the indoor national meet. In2010,DibbernplayedapivotalroleintheRambelleswinningtheNCAAD-IIOutdoorNationalChampionship,thefirstinschoolhistory.Inadditiontohisregionalhonors,hewasnamedNationalAssistantCoachoftheYear,andlaterwasnamedheadcoachoftheASUcrosscountryteam.Inthe‘Belles’runtothenational title, Dibbern coached Aisha Adams to the Regional and NationalFieldAthleteoftheYearhonors.AdamswonanindividualnationalchampionshipintheheptathlonandsettheD-IInationalrecord in the event. She was among seven individuals and a sprint relayteamthatDibbernguidedtoLSCtitlesand/orAll-Americastatus in their particular events. Adding to an already impressive year, Dibbern then coached Adams,RuizandAndriaNusseytotheU.S.A.Championships,andAdamstohersecondThorpeCupappearance.FortheASUmenin 2010, Dibbern coached two individuals and a sprint relay team to All-America honors as well as guiding several Rams and the relay teamtoLSCtitles. 2010wasalsoDibbern’sfirstyearheadinguptheASUcrosscountryteams.Hisfirst‘Bellesteamwasrunner-upattheLSCChampionshipsandfinishedeighthattheregionalmeet.Withstrongshowingsallyear,EmelineCrutcherwasnamedAll-LSC. In2009,DibbernwashonoredbythecoachingfraternityastheNCAAD-IINationalWomen’sTrackandFieldAssistantCoachoftheYear.HelpinghimearnthatawardwerefourRambelleswhoachieved All-America status – Adams in the heptathlon, Nussey in thelongjump,andCulleyJoDawsonandAdreeLakeyinthejavelin.AdamsalsomadeherfirsttriptocompeteintheThorpeCup,whereshe posted the U.S.A.’s second-highest score. Three Rams athletes also gained All-America honors under Dibbernin2009–hurdleranddecathleteRyanMcWilliams,javelinthrowerTylerOrlandoanddecathleteChaseMoore.Itmarkedthesecond time in four years that the Rams have had multiple All-Americans in the decathlon. Before arriving at ASU, Dibbern spent one season as the assistantmen’sandwomen’strackcoachatOklahomaBaptistUniversity,wherehecoachedthemulti-eventandfieldeventathletes.Hehelpedleadthemen’sandwomen’ssquadstothird-placefinishesattheNAIAIndoorNationalChampionships,andthewomen’steamtoafifth-placeeffortattheNAIAoutdoornationalmeet.Underhisguidance,fourOBUathletesgarneredAll-Americahonors,includingoneNAIAnationalrunner-up,15qualifiedforNAIAnationalmeets,andfivenewschoolrecordswereset.PriortohistimeatOBU,DibbernspenttwoseasonsasagraduateassistantcoachatHastings(Neb.)College,workingwiththemulti-eventathletes,jumpersandjavelinthrowers.AtHastings,hecoachedthreeNAIAnationalchampions,threenationalrunners-
upand13All-Americans.HealsohelpedHCqualifymorethan25athletestoNAIAnationalmeetsandsetfournewschoolrecords.Inaddition,hehelpedcoachthewomen’steamtoafifth-placefinishattheNAIAOutdoorNationalChampionshipsin2002.DibbernalsospentoneseasonasanassistantatChristovalHighSchool,wherehecoachedthelong,tripleandhighjumpers. As a student-athlete, Dibbern competed for the Rams track andfieldteamfrom1997-99andin2001.HeplacedashighasthirdattheLSCChampionshipsinthetriplejump,andtwicequalifiedprovisionallyfortheNCAAD-IINationalOutdoorChampionships.Aftertakingtimeoffduetoaninjury,hereturnedin2001tocompeteinthedecathlon.Alsoaprepstar,hewasatwo-timestatequalifierinthehighjumpforAlbanyHighSchoolandplacedsecondatthestatemeet his senior year.DibbernholdsanInstructorTrainingCertificateandaLevelIICoachingCertificatefromU.S.A.TrackandFieldinthejumps,throws, multi-events, sprints and hurdles. He received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Angelo State in 2001 and his master’s degreeinphysicaleducationfromHastingsCollegein2003.Inaddition to his track and cross country duties, he also serves as an instructor in the ASU Kinesiology Department.

GARY GABRIEL OneofthemostfamiliarfacesintheAngeloStateAthletics Department, Gary Gabriel has been associated with the ASU track and cross country teams for more than 20 years. He became a full-time assistant coach in 2006 after spending the previous 16 years as a volunteer coach. A former distance runner for the Rams, Gabriel has been instrumental in the success of both the Rams and Rambelles cross country programs and track distance corps. The RambelleshavewonthreeLoneStarConferencecrosscountrychampionshipswhiletheRamshavefinishedsecondtwiceattheLSCmeetandpostedeighttop-fivefinishes.GabrielwashonoredaspartoftheLSCWomen’sCoachingStaffoftheYearin2006and2009,andwasnamedLSCWomen’sCrossCountryCoachoftheYearin1998. Under Gabriel’s watchful eye, ASU regularly boasts All-LSCselectionsforboththeRamsandRambellescrosscountryteams.TopperformancesincludeLSCchampionshipsforDoraDavilain1998andDamarisVaughanin1999,andLSCFreshmanoftheYearhonorsforLaneRutlandin1998.DavilaearnedAll-Americahonorsin1997,whensheledtheʼBellestoa14th-placefinish,andDiegoCordobarepresentedtheRamsattheNCAAnationalmeetin1994. However, the laundry list of athletes who have thrived under Gabriel’s coaching goes all the way back toHelenO’Sullivan,whogarneredcross country All-America honors in 1991-92, and Bobby Lumpkins, who wonASU’sfirst-everLSCtitleinthe10,000-meters in 1993. Gabriel’s track All-Americans include Rutland (3,000-metersteeplechase),Vaughn(1,500-and3,000-meters),CindyFarris(10,000-meters), Karsten Duncan (3,000-meter steeplechase), Trista McIntyre(1,500-meters)andO’Sullivan(10,000-meters). In2004,GabrielhelpedguideseveralRamsandʼBellestocrosscountrysuccess,includingAll-LSChonors for Trent Joseph and Dustin Hafernick, and all-region honors for Joseph.JosephalsobecamethefirstRamtoqualifyfortheNCAACrossCountryChampionships,andwasnamedtheLSCMaleAcademicRunneroftheYearforcrosscountry.Onthewomen’sside,RebeccaGraupmanwonthefirstofherback-to-backLSCtitlesinthe10,000-meters and was named Academic All-LSC. Another highlight of Gabriel’s coaching tenure came in 2010 as the ʼBellescrosscountryteamfinishedastheLSCrunner-upandplacedeighthat regionals. He was essential in the development of sophomore Emeline Crutcher,whoearnedAll-LSChonors.
WithASUhostingthe2011LSCCrossCountryChampionships,GabrielguidedtheRambellestoarunner-upfinish.CrutcherearnedAll-LSCandAll-SouthCentralRegionhonors,andwasnamedtheLSCAcademicRunneroftheYear.TheRams’BryanBarkeralsopickedupAll-LSCandall-regionhonors. A native of Rockwall, Gabriel ran for the Rams from 1981-84.Highlightsofhiscareerincludeathird-placefinishinthe1,500-metersin1982,afifth-placefinishattheLSCCrossCountryChampionshipsin1981andqualifyingforNAIAnationals. Gabriel received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from ASU in 1990. He has two sons, Patrick and Zachary.

ChrystalRuizisawomanwithmanydescriptivetitlesincludingAll-American,NationalChampion,LoneStarConferenceChampionandmulti-eventstar.TheBandera,Texas native has established herself as a talented graduate assistant for Angelo State after a highly decorated collegiate career. Ruiz wrapped up her career with her seventh All-American honor after placing third in the pentathlon with a personalbestscoreof4,008points.Thepreviousseason,theRambellesfirstindoorseason,Ruizwastherunner-upattheNCAADivisionIIIndoorChampionshipsinthepentathlon. Bycapturing50pointsintheirfinalsixevents,theRambelles ran away with the title, beating second place finisheranddefendingchampionLincolnUniversityby14points,87-73.And,itwasatotalteameffort.SeniorAisha“Ice”Adamsscoredpointsinallsixeventssheentered, including an individual national championship intheheptathlon.SeniorChrystalRuizscoredpointsinmultiple events, senior Andria Nussey rebounded from a poorshowinginthelongjumptosetanewschoolrecordandplacesecondinthe800-meters,andseniorCelethiaByrd won an individual national championship in the 400-meterdashandfinishedthirdinthe200-meterdash,a result that clinched the title for ASU. “Ijustsaid,‘ThankyouLord,’”Byrdsaid.“Thatisallthatwasrunningthroughmymind.Iwasveryhappy,and to hear my time was a new personal record, it made mefeelgood.Mostofall,Imaynothavetorunthemilerelay.That’sawesome!” Byrd’s points from the 200-meters put the Rambelles ahead by 12 points with only the 4x400-meter (mile) relay left to run. three points. Howell also set a new school record with a 45.95inthe400-metersthatwasgoodenoughforthirdplace and six valuable points. The Rams also capped off their national meet in stylewithasecond-placefinishinthe4x400-meterrelayin 3:06.44, the second-fastest time in school history. ThatracefinallyletjuniorTerenceHollandshowcasehistalents as, due to weather delays, he was forced to wait untilthefinaleventofthemeettogetonthetrack. “Withallthatwaiting,somethinggoodwasboundtohappen,”Hollandsaid.“Iwasreadytogolastnightin the rain, but had to keep the animal in the cage. This wasmyoneshotandIwantedtomakeitmybestone.Second-fastest time in school history, you can’t get mad aboutthat.” ThefinalracealsoprovidedanothershotatsuccessforfreshmanIsidroGarcia,whomissedqualifyingfortheindividual400-metersbymerehundredths of a second. ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN OF THE YEAR AND NCAA SCHOLARSHIP WINNER Heptathlete Amy Bippert capped off her impressive ASU track career with her selection as the GTE/CoSIDASpringAt-LargeTeamAcademicAll-AmericanoftheYearin1997.Bippert,the1997NCAADivisionIIheptathlonchampion,waspickedforthetopscholastichonoravailabletoacollegeathletefrommorethan200femaleathletesattheNCAADivisionII,IIIandNAIAlevelsfromacrossthecountryinsixdifferent sports. BippertalsowasnamedanNCAAPostgraduateScholarshipwinnerthatsamespring.ShewasselectedfromapplicantsfromtheNCAADivisionIIandIIIlevelsinsevendifferentsports.Thescholarshipfor$5,000canbeappliedtograduatestudiesatanyaccreditedinstitutionofBippert’sselection.SheisthefirstpersoninASUhistorytoearneitherhonor. FoundedonApril25,1931,theLSChasgrownfromafive-teamconferenceofTexas-basedschoolstoa16-memberleaguethatspansthreestates(Texas,OklahomaandNewMexico).Theleaguecontinuestoassistitsmemberinstitutions in the maintenance of intercollegiate athletic programs that are compatible with the highest standards of education and competitive sports.
Throughout the league’s history, various institutions havecompetedundertheLSCbanner.Today,onlyTexasA&MUniversity-Commerce(thenEastTexasState)remainsfrom the original group that was formed in 1931 when North Texas State, Southwest Texas State, Sam Houston State and StephenF.AustinwithdrewfromtheoldTexasIntercollegiateAthletic Association. The membership alignment has changed over the years, with current members having been added in each of thepastfivedecades.TexasA&M-Kingsville(formerlyTexasA&I)joinedin1954,followedbyAngeloStatein1968andAbileneChristianin1973. ConferencemembershipremainedwithintheTexasbordersuntil1984whenEasternNewMexicowasadmitted.Sincethen,theLSChasgrowntoincludemembersfromArkansasandOklahoma.. TheLSCconductsconferencechampionshipsin16sports(eightmenandeightwomen).Men’schampionshipsinclude football, soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, trackandfield,tennisandgolf.Women’stitlesaredeterminedin volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, softball, track andfield,tennisandgolf.
2011 LSC CHAMPIONSHIP The Angelo State women claimed its thirdstraightandfifthconferencetitleineightyears,whileAbileneChristiancapturedits18thconsecutivemen’schampionshipatthe2011LoneStarConferenceTrack&FieldChampionships,heldatOscarFrazierTrackatMemorialStadiuminStephenville,Texas. The Rambelles ended the meet with 197points,whileACUfinishedinsecondwith168.50points,WestTexasA&Mwasthirdat96andIncarnateWordfourth94.50. TarletonStateendedinfifthplacewith75points,CentralOklahomasixth56,TexasA&M-Commerceseventh54,TexasA&M-Kingsvilleeighth47andEasternNewMexicowas ninth with 26.
