Season openersaCharlotte began its 38th season of women’s basketball action when it played host to North Carolina Central Nov. 10.aThe 49ers are now 22-16 in their history in sea-son openers, including a 17-1 mark when the year starts at home following the 80-31 triumph.aSaturday’s game marked the third-straight sea-son in which Charlotte began the campaign in-side Halton Arena. The Niners have won all three, including last year’s meeting with Presbyterian to tip-off the Cara Consuegra era.aOverall, the 49ers have captured their last 14 season openers that have also been home open-ers, with the last loss coming Nov. 27, 1982, to Wingate by a 68-64 margin.aCharlotte has opened up at home five times in its seven Atlantic 10 seasons through Saturday, posting a triumph in each contest.
Member of elite national companyaCharlotte women’s basketball has competed in 10-straight postseasons, including eight WNIT berths and two NCAA bids.aThe 49ers’ run is the longest in school history, as they made the postseason only once previous-ly (1990) prior to the current streak starting in 2003.aWith the 10 straight appear-ances, Charlotte is a member of some exclusive compa-ny nationally. The 49ers are one of only 14 schools across the country, out of 345 NCAA Division I programs, to reach the postsea-son in each of the last 10 years.aCharlotte is the only non-BCS school on the list, which includes last year’s national champion Bay-lor and mainstays Connecticut and Tennessee.
Earning preseason accoladesaSenior Jennifer Hailey has begun her final campaign with a variety of preseason honors, both on the national and the conference level.aShe was recognized by the website College Sports Madness as one of its All-High Major Sec-ond Team All-Americans.

a W i t h exactly a 20-point ef-fort against FGCU Nov. 17, Hailey joined the e x c l u s i v e club of 49ers.aShe hit a pair of free throws with 1:40 left, giving Charlotte a 78-58 lead, to reach the mark and before exit-ing the con-test 26 sec-onds later.aShe added a game-high
11 rebounds against the Eagles for her third-straight double-double to start the season.aHailey began the season ranked 23rd in pro-gram history with her 956 career points.
Long-range threataSophomore Hillary Sigmon made an immedi-ate impact on the program during her first colle-giate campaign last season on her way to garner-ing All-Atlantic 10 Rookie Team accolades.aNot only did she set a single-season school freshman record with her 48.1 3-point field goal percentage, but it also broke the overall standard in 49ers history.aShe converted 37 of her 77 attempts from long range for a better percentage than her overall mark of 68-of-154 (44.2 percent) on field goals.
New coaching staff additionaJoining the Charlotte coaching staff this season is Joanne Aluka-White, who spent the previous six seasons at FIU in the Sun Belt.aAluka-White competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics with Nigeria, leading the squad to the first victory by an African nation in the Games.aShe is a 2001 graduate of Middle Tennessee, where she earned Ohio Valley Freshman of the Year honors (prior to the school joining the Sun Belt) and finished with over 1,000 career points.aShe also played professionally, both domesti-cally and overseas. In the US, she saw time with the Dallas Fury of the now defunct National Women’s Basketball League. The coach of the Fury for the 2004 campaign was Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman.
Exclusive coaching milestone reachedaWith Charlotte winning its game against North Carolina Central Nov. 10, it marked the sec-ond-straight season-opening victory under head coach Cara Con-suegra.aConsuegra be-came just the third head coach, out of eight total, in the program’s 38-year history to win back-to-back season openers to open his or her career with the Niners.
Protecting the home courtaCharlotte has had a long history of great suc-cess at home, especially over the course of the last 10 seasons since it began its postseason run
in 2002-03.aBeginning in 2002-03 and ev-ery year since, the 49ers have earned double-digit home victories, includ-ing a perfect 12-0 mark to start the streak, which was just the third un-beaten home mark in school history (joining the 12-0 ledger in 1978-79
and 11-0 mark in 1989-90).
Clamping down on defenseaCharlotte put on a defensive clinic in its sea-son-opening 80-31 victory over North Carolina Central Nov. 10.aThe 49ers held the Eagles to just 25.8 percent from the floor (8-of-31), including only eight points during the first half.aCharlotte limited NCCU to 22 boards, winning the battle on the glass by 16, and forced 28 TOs. aThe Niners converted those miscues into 32 points, finished with an 18-0 margin on fast-break points and a 50-14 edge on points in the paint, while the bench outscored the full NCCU roster, 32-to-31.

The ball stops hereaCharlotte nearly set a school record by allowing only 31 points to North Carolina Central in the season opener Nov. 10.aThe 31 points al-lowed are the fewest in head coach Cara Consuegra ’s short reign, while rankings as the sec-o n d - l o w e s t opponent to-tal in program history.aThe previous low for opponent points under Consuegra’s watch was 35 by Rhode Island Feb. 4, 2012, which remains the fewest given up in an Atlantic 10 contest during her tenure.
Not keeping it closeaThe 49ers also set another Consuegra-era re-cord with the season-opening 80-31 triumph over North Carolina Central Nov. 10.aCharlotte established a new mark for largest margin of victory under the second-year head coach with the 49-point difference, surpassing the 37-point win against Rhode Island in a 72-35 triumph Feb. 4, 2012, which also remains the larg-est gap in an Atlantic 10 tilt during her tenure.aWhile the 49-point margin does not fall into the program’s all-time Top 10, it holds a spot in the Top 15 chart.
You don’t look familiaraCharlotte is slated to face five, possibly six, op-ponents for the first time this year despite playing in its 38th season.aOf the new teams on the schedule, just one will be a conference member, as the Niners and Butler square off Feb. 13 in Charlotte. aThe 49ers were previous conference foes with the other new Atlantic 10 league member, VCU, dating back to the Sun Belt and Metro days.aCharlotte has faced 31 opponents since the start of the Cara Consuegra era in 2011-12, im-proving to 19-12 in those inaugural matchups.

A rare successful startaThe 49ers began the 2012-13 campaign with back-to-back wins, marking the second-straight season in which the feat has been accomplished under head coach Cara Consuegra.aCharlotte led off a season with consecutive vic-tories in its first two games for the first time since 1993-94 and 1994-95. aThose two seasons marked the end of a three-year stretch where the Niners started 2-0 each time, also including the 1992-93 and 1993-94 campaigns.aAt no other time in its 38-year history, other than the three-year streak under Ed Baldwin and the current run, had Charlotte recorded a 2-0 mark to begin consecutive seaons.
Our own 4-H clubaThis year’s Charlotte roster features four players with their last name beginning with a H: Jennifer Hailey, Ny Hammonds, Shequana Harris and Ayanna Holmes.aEach one of the players rep-resents a different class in school, as well: Hailey (Sr.), Hammonds (Jr.), Holmes (So.) and Harris (Fr.)

Century club membersaSeniors Jai Forney and Jennifer Hailey played in their 100th career game when the 49ers faced TCU Nov. 14.aThe pair is the active leader for Charlotte with classmate Amanda Dowe next on the list at 91 starts.aThrough their 100th career game, Hailey had earned 68 starts and Forney garnered 49, again being the two active leaders for the Niners.
2012-13 SigneesCharlotte women’s basketball announced five signees to National Letters of Intent in the early signing period Nov. 14, the second recruiting class under head coach Cara Consuegra.
“Overall, we’re really excited about the class that we have been able to sign and bring into Charlotte,” Consuegra said. “Each one of these players bring a specific skill set that we need and fit in perfectly with our system. “They are all highly-recruited players that could have gone to a lot of different places but they wanted to come to Charlotte to help us com-pete and continue to compete at the high level at which we have the last several years. I couldn’t be more excited about this group.”
