2012-13 AUSTIN PEAY GOVS AND LADY GOVS TENNIS

Austin Peay State University is a comprehensive, state-assisted university with a distinguished tradition in liberal and professional education. The institution is named in

honor of Austin Peay, Tennessee’s governor from 1924 until 1927, the year APSU was founded.

The university is located in Clarksville, Tenn., just 45 min-utes northwest of Tennessee’s capital, Nashville, on Interstate 24. One of the South’s most historic cities, Clarksville also is Tennessee’s third-fastest growing city behind only Memphis and Nashville.

Situated on gently rolling terrain near picturesque down-town Clarksville, Austin Peay’s main campus consists of 68

buildings on 169 acres. The classical Georgian architec-ture of the Austin Peay campus is combined with newer buildings. This blend provides a link with the past while refl ecting the academic excellence and dignity of an institution of higher learning.

The newest building additions to the main campus are the Foy Fitness and Recreation Center, Sundquist Science Complex and the new Morgan University Center, each opening for use since 2001. The $11-million Foy Center, features a rock-climbing wall and 10,000 square feet of fi tness space and other amenities for the student body. The Sundquist Complex is one of the South’s premier science education facilities and represents the largest capital appropriation ever in Tennessee for a single classroom building. The Morgan University Center is located in the heart of the campus and features a cybercafe, meeting rooms, a food court, coffee shop, ballroom and lounges for Austin Peay students.

Recently, Austin Peay has expanded its on-campus housing. A new high rise on Castle Heights houses more than 400 students, while three new dormitories are being developed and are tentatively scheduled to be completed for Fall 2013.

Austin Peay’s campus has been the site of seven educational institutions since 1806. The cam-pus was occupied by Southwestern for 50 years until 1925 when the school moved to Memphis. Austin Peay was founded two years later as a two-year normal school to

train teachers for the region. Austin Peay has grown over the years to take its place among the fi nest mid-sized four-year universities in the nation.

Austin Peay Normal School became a four-year college in 1941-42, and university status was conferred Sept. 1, 1967.

Austin Peay State University currently enrolls more than 10,000 students from every region of Tennessee, most of the 50 states and several foreign countries.

Austin Peay offers more than 50 majors in associate, bachelor’s, master’s and education specialist’s degrees with additional areas of concentration. Courses are offered in arts and sciences, business, education, engineering technology, nursing and human services. Graduate studies also are offered in several areas. In addition, numerous online courses are offered each semester.

A state leader in public service, Austin Peay State University has more than 750 employees. Engaged in the most modern teaching techniques and research are nearly 280 full-time faculty members, 90 percent of whom hold the earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degrees in their disciplines.

The Governors Tennis Center has been a part of Austin Peay athletics and the Clarksville community for nearly two de-cades. When the idea was broached to build an indoor tennis center on the APSU campus, the advantages were obvious for APSU students, the Governors and Lady Govs tennis programs and the local tennis community.

The indoor facility literally became a tennis “center” in northwest Ten-nessee. The site of Clarksville’s fi rst indoor tennis center is located across the street from Governors Stadium and next to the stadium park-ing lot. It consists of four lighted courts. Dressing facilities for both men and women are provided.

The University actively seeks memberships from families, individuals and corporations. Students do not have to pay a membership fee but are charged a reduced court-time fee.

Combined with the recently renovated Governors Tennis Courts, Austin Peay possesses debatably the Ohio Valley Conference’s fi nest tennis facilities.

The Governors Tennis Center not only provides protection from the elements, but also allows for continous teaching and instruction by the Austin Peay coaching staff.

The recently resurfaced Austin Peay tennis courts remains the fi nest out-door tennis courts in the area. Con-sisting of eight lighted courts, the fa-cility sits adjacent to the Foy Fitness and Recreation Center. The courts have new windscreens and bleacher seating, along with a practice wall.

Ross Brown, who has 18 years of college head-coaching expe-rience, is in his fi rst season at the helm of the Austin Peay men and women’s tennis programs.

Brown served as men’s head coach at Evansville from 1991-2001 before moving to become Southern Indiana men’s coach from 2001-08. He left the coaching profession after the 2008 season to serve as Fujairah Tennis and Country Club general manager in United Arab Emirates for two and a half years.

As a college head coach, Brown led Southern Indiana to the 2005 Great Lakes Valley Conference tennis championship with a 23-6 record, which earned him conference Coach of the Year accolades. He also coached Joe Epkey to the Division II Na-tional Championship match.

During his Evansville career, Brown’s teams recorded more than 100 victories. He was named the 1994 Midwest College Coach of the Year.

In his time at Fujairah Tennis and Country Club he helped ex-pand membership from 105 to 805. He also served as Director of the Maktoum Championships, the second largest sporting event during Ramadan in the U.A. E.

He also has served as co-owner and head professional at Ad-vantage Court and Fitness in Evansville from 1997-2005. Prior to that, he served as Competitive Edge and Junior Camp Direc-tor at the John Newcomb Tennis Ranch in Australia back in the mid-1980s.

His college coaching background has been on the men’s side, but Brown has coached several junior women tennis players at both Fujairah and Advantage, in particular Stephanie Hazlett, who won fi ve national junior United States Tennis Association Titles and later played at Florida. He also coached Indiana and Kentucky High School champions. Brown is a member of the Paris Junior College Hall of Fame and received the prestigious McLemore Cup (given to the most valuable player of all sports at PCJ) in 1979.

In addition his two daughters, Bayley (Lewis College) and Brit-tany (Kansas/Evansville) went on to play college tennis.

Upon retire-ment from the Army Reserves, Faires worked more than 35 years as a civilian for the Army Continuing Education Sys-tem. In fact, he later retired as the director of Fort Campbell’s Army Education Center.

2011-12 APSU TENNIS HEADLINESBAILEY NAMED OVC PLAYER OF THE YEAR; FOUR GOVS NAMED ALL-OVCCLARKSVILLE - An undefeated season in Ohio Valley Conference play at No. 1 singles led to junior Sean Bailey, of the Austin Peay State Univer-sity men’s tennis team, being named fi rst-team All-OVC and the earning the OVC Men’s Player of the Year honor.

Sophomore Jasmin Ademovic also picked up his second-straight fi rst-team All-OVC selection. Freshmen Dimitar Ristovski and Aleksas Tveri-jonas were each second-team All-OVC picks as voted by the league’s coaches, the conference offi ce announced, Thursday.

Bailey moved to No. 1 singles after opening the season with four straight wins at No. 2. For the junior Canadian, the promotion was overdue. He dropped his fi rst match against No. 71 Georgia State and fi nished the season unbeaten in his last 14 matches, including an 11-match win streak entering the conference tournament.

He was perfect in league play, going 7-0 as part of 15-2 dual-match re-cord. He fi nished 9-2 at No. 1 singles and 6-0 at No. 2 singles. In doubles, Bailey teamed with and mentored Ristovski, compiling a 9-9 mark at No. 1 doubles, winning fi ve of eight during OVC play. It is the third All-OVC honor for Bailey, being named second-team All-OVC as a freshman and fi rst-team All-OVC as a sophomore.

This marks the seventh time an APSU player was named OVC Men’s Player of the Year. Noel Phillips (1973, 1974) and Gary Boss (1976, 1977) each earned the award twice. Hal Jolley (1981) and Carlos Claverie (1983) were the last two Govs awarded.

Ademovic, the 2011 OVC Freshman of the Year, battled injury early in the season, but made it through league play unscathed with a 7-0 OVC mark. He started the season at No. 1 singles, winning his fi rst four matches be-fore moving to No. 2. The young Bosnian would lose three of four matches at No. 2 before opening OVC play with a win against Murray State.

From there, Ademovic fi nished the season winning eight of his fi nal nine matches. Among that fi nal stretch was a pair of three-set wins, the fi rst coming in the home fi nale against Jacksonville State. At Eastern Ken-tucky in the match which locked up the Govs’ No. 2 OVC tournament seed, Ademovic battled back from an opening-set defi cit to win in three sets against Niklas Schroeder.

Ristovski joined the Govs in January and made an immediate impact playing No. 3 singles. He fi nished with a 13-7 overall mark, including a 7-1 OVC record. Ristovski also found himself battling at No. 1 doubles alongside Bailey, going 5-3 in OVC play. He actually started the season at No.2, but quickly found a home in the No. 3 position. After opening with a 4-5 record, Ristovski got it going for league play. He would go on to win nine of his fi nal 11 matches, including eight straight-set wins.

Tverijonas fi nished with a perfect 7-0 OVC mark, joining Bailey and Ade-movic in making through league play without a loss. He started at No. 5

singles, but proved early that he was capable at No. 4. In fact, he won 10 of 13 matches at the position, including all seven OVC matches. Perhaps Tverijonas’ biggest win came when he outlasted EKU’s Parul Verma to clinch the deciding match against the Colonels.

EKU UPSETS TENNIS GOVS AT OVC TOURNAMENTNASHVILLE - Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team was up-set by Eastern Kentucky, 4-2, in second-round action at the Ohio Valley Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament, Saturday, at Nashville’s Centen-nial Park.

A slow start in doubles dictated the match for Austin Peay. Weather led to a delayed start and doubles was ultimately pushed inside. The Govs lost the top two doubles matches, while the third match was stopped un-fi nished.

Losing the doubles point meant the Govs would need four singles match-es to advance. Junior Sean Bailey was shaky at the start, dropping the fi rst set at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Jasmin Ademovic started slow at No. 2, but got on track to win in straight sets and give the Govs their fi rst point.

The Govs took a 2-1 lead after freshman Dimitar Ristovksi won in straight-sets at No. 3. Meanwhile, freshman Aleksas Tverijonas lost his fi rst set at No. 4, but came back to win the second. Eastern Kentucky won at No. 6 and pushed freshman Michal Hriciste to a third set at No. 5.

Despite taking the Govs taking both matches to three sets, Eastern Ken-tucky would end up winning at Nos. 1 and 4, with Parul Verma’s win at No. 4 deciding the match. Oddly enough in the regular season, it was Tverijonas who defeated Verma in the Govs win at EKU.

BAILEY NAMED CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT AT-LARGECLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -Austin Peay State University rising senior tennis standout Sean Bailey has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 Men’s At-Large team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) has announced.

On the court, the Manitoba, Canada native led Austin Peay to second-place in the OVC standings. He owned an overall 19-5 singles mark, in-cluding a 7-0 at No. 1 singles during OVC play. Bailey also was 5-3 in No. 1 doubles.

A three-time All-OVC selection, Bailey was chosen as Austin Peay’s 2011-12 Most Outstanding Male Athlete.

2011-12 APSU TENNIS HEADLINESTOMIC, LADY GOVS ELIMINATED AT OVC TENNIS TOURNAMENTNASHVILLE - Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team was eliminated from the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament with a 4-3 loss to Eastern Kentucky, Saturday, at Centennial Sportsplex.

In both singles and doubles, the match came down to the fi nal point. The Lady Govs won two of three doubles matches, but the Colonels won four singles matches to advance.

It came down to No. 1 doubles after the two teams split Nos. 2 and 3. Or-nella Di Salvo and Andra Cornea won 8-5 at No. 2, but Vanessa Tavarez and Jovana Karak dropped an 8-4 match at No. 3. The Lady Govs would take the point after Vanja Tomic and Alison Carre fashioned a come-from-behind win at the top spot.

In singles play, Carre won in straight sets at No. 3 and Cornea won in straight sets at No. 4. The Colonels took the bottom two matches and Di Salvo fell at No. 2. That left only Tomic’s match still on the court.

Tomic and Faouzi had a history entering the match, with Faouzi handing Tomic her season’s only loss in their earlier meeting. The two battled with Faouzi taking the fi rst set, only to see Tomic win the second. In the third set, it came down to unforced errors by Tomic as Faouzi won a close 6-4 third set to settle the match.

TOMIC AND CARRE NAMED ALL-OVCCLARKSVILLE - Senior Vanja Tomic and freshman Alison Carre, of the Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team, were named fi rst-team All-Ohio Valley Conference as voted on by the league’s coaches, the conference offi ce announced, Thursday.

Tomic, who set the standard high in earning OVC Player of the Year honors as sophomore, fi nished the season with an 8-1 OVC record, her only loss coming during the fi nal weekend of league play. A three-time fi rst-team All-OVC pick, Tomic has lost only two OVC matches during her career.

In fact, during this season Tomic posted a remarkable 17-match win streak, comparable only to her own streak set during her sophomore sea-son. Along the way, she defeated two ranked opponents and had only one match go into the third set, accounting for 17 straight-set wins during the season.

Doubles proved to be Tomic’s only weakness, as she teamed with Carre beginning in January. The duo posted a 10-11 overall mark at No. 1, in-cluding a 5-4 OVC record.

Carre joined the Lady Govs in January and opened the season at No. 2 singles. Originally, she struggled with the transition to college tennis, but after moving to No. 3 singles, Feb. 24 against Belmont, she seemed to fi nd her way. On back-to-back days, Carre won a straight-set match against Belmont and a super-tiebreak against Lipscomb.

After falling in three-sets at Troy, Carre won 10 of her next 12 matches. She fi nished the season with a 10-4 record at No. 3 singles and 7-1 OVC mark.

TOMIC WINS 17TH STRAIGHT, LADY GOVS DOWN JSUCLARKSVILLE - Strong doubles play helped Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team to a 4-3 Ohio Valley Conference win against Jack-sonville State, Saturday.

The Lady Govs improved to 8-12 overall with a 5-2 OVC mark. Jackson-ville State dropped to 6-16 overall with a 3-5 league record.

Austin Peay won doubles for the third consecutive match, showing marked improvement in area which struggled early in the season. However, when the Lady Govs win the doubles point, they’ve lost only twice this season.

It was Nos. 2 and 3 doubles pulling out the win against the Gamecocks. Sophomore Andra Cornea and freshman Ornella Di Salvo worked an 8-2 win at No. 2 while freshmen Vanessa Tavarez and Jovana Karak won 8-4 at No. 3.

Having the doubles point in hand meant APSU needed only three singes’ wins to take the match. Senior Vanja Tomic, who has become almost automatic, won her 17th-straight match at No. 1 singles. Tomic has now tied her personal win streak set during her 2010 season in which she was named OVC Player of the Year.

Austin Peay also got a win from Alison Carre at No. 3 singles, needing a second-set tiebreaker to close it. Cornea also won her second-straight match at No. 4 singles.
