Willamette University is proud to provide opportunities for student-athletes to attain great accomplishments in athletics and in the classroom.

Bearcat athletes excel on their respective teams throughout the year. Several teams have attained postseason success during recent seasons, continuing a history of excellence in Willamette Athletics. These teams and athletes also shine in the classroom. From Academic All-District and Academic All-America selections to several Fulbright, Kemper and NCAA Postgraduate scholarship winners, WU athletes have been honored for theiracademic achievements. It is this combination, along with a strong commitment to community service and Willamette’s motto, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born,” that makes BearcatAthletics great.

Leslie Shevlin is in her fourth season as the head coach of the Willamette men’s and women’s swimming teams.

Shevlin guided several Bearcats to success at the 2012 NWC Championships. Sean Piper placed sixth in the men’s 200-yard backstroke. Piper also placed 10th in the 200-yard individual medley, recording the fourth fastest time in Willamette history.

Erin Parkinson took sixth place in the women’s 1,650-yard freestyle, and Zander Le Bel was ninth in the men’s 1,650-yard freestyle.

Prior to joining the Willamette coaching staff, Shevlin was the assistant women’s swimming coach at the University of New Mexico for a total of four seasons. She previously served as a graduate assistant at Duquesne University.

In 2003, Shevlin earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, where she majored

in Communication Studies. She received a Master of Arts degree in Liberal Studies from Duquesne in 2005.

At UNC-Wilmington, Shevlin competed on the swimming team all four years. She also was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at UNCW.

She was a graduate assistant swimming coach at Duquesne for two years. She had a variety of duties at Duquesne, including coordinating road trips, team building and serving as the primary recruiter.

After completing her master’s degree, Shevlin was hired as an assistant coach at New Mexico. Her primary duties were in recruiting and the coaching of the distance freestyle group.

While working at UNM, she was a youth team assistant coach with the Lobo Aquatic Club. She also coached at the U.S. Air Force Academy Summer Camps in 2007 and 2008.

PAGE 92011-12 REVIEW AND 2012-13 PREVIEW

2012-13 SEASoN oUTLooK2011-12 SEASoN REVIEWWith a recruiting class consisting of 12 newcomers, the 2013 edition of Willamette swimming will be Head Coach Leslie Shevlin’s deepest team yet. Still, the Bearcats will feature two relatively young teams, with just two seniors on the roster.

Senior Kayla Kosaki will lead the women’s team as a captain and a swimmer in the butterfly and backstroke, and will be aided by juniors Susie Barnes, Hope Nelson, and Erin Parkinson. Last year, Parkinson finished in the top eight in two events at the NWC championships: the 1,650 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. Barnes will swim the sprint freestyle and breaststroke, while Nelson will lead the way in the distance freestyle.

Returning sophomores Kersey Bars and Summer Elias will be joined by newcomers Jessica Beach and Annette Marinello. Freshmen on the women’s team are Leah Freeborn, Cara Jack, Christa Rohrbach, Malia Santos and Michaela Zuber. Each of Willamette’s freshmen are capable of making an immediate impact in multiple events.

Senior Austin Williams and junior Chris Whitehead will lead this year’s men’s squad. Fellow junior Nick Barton, in his first season of collegiate swimming, will bring depth in the sprint freestyle races and the middle distance freestyle events.

Four sophomores also return: Aran Johnson, Alex Burkhart, Zander Le Bel, and Sean Piper. Piper will attempt to build on his excellent times from last year’s NWC meet, including a sixth place finish in the breaststroke, the fourth-best 200 I.M. time in Bearcat swimming history.

A strong freshmen class will give Willamette additional depth. Josh Thornton and Kulananalu Tarnas will help out in the breaststroke, and Colin Sievers will contribute in the freestyle and butterfly. Andrew Lum could be the Bearcats’ top butterfly competitor, while bringing speed to the medley relays. Alex Guffey will contribute in the middle distance freestyle races.

WU will take a winter training trip to San Diego, Calif this year. The Bearcats will also travel to the Oregon Senior Open in November, before hosting the NWC Championships in Federal Way, Wash., in February.

Willamette University has a rich swimming tradition. Since 1976, the Bearcats have competed at national meets in a variety of individual and relay events. Bearcat swimmers have recorded multiple national championships.

Steve Koga won five national titles at Willamette in the 100 freestyle (1980), 50 freestyle (1981-82) and 200 freestyle (1981-82). Dawn Liem achieved one national championship in the 200 butterfly (1980). The WU women’s 200-yard medley relay team won a national title in 1983.

Willamette swimming has produced 27 men’s All-Americans (56 selections), plus 39 women’s All-Americans (87 selections). WU has won seven NWC men’s team titles and four NWC women’s team titles.

Since 2009, Head Coach Leslie Shevlin and the Bearcats have worked hard tohonor that tradition by building a competitive team with a strong culture while maintaining academic excellence.

In 2011, Lauren Ballinger provided an All-NWC performance in the 200 freestyle, as she finishied seventh in 1:59.58. Erin Parkinson had a standout effort in the 1,650 freestyle, placing ninth with a time of 18:47.32. The Bearcats also performed well in the breaststroke, with Parkinson and Chris Whitehead swimming in the 100 and 200 finals. WU produced 95% personal best times.

Three Bearcat athletes were named Academic All-NWC in 2011. Kayla Kosaki, Austin Williams and Whitehead earned the honor with a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher.

Willamette continued to make strides last year, with several strong showings at the NWC championships. On the women’s side, Parkinson picked up where she left off the previous year, taking sixth place in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 18:25.89. She also earned eighth place in the 100 breaststroke, finishing in 1:11.49.

For the men, freshman Sean Piper had breakout performances in the 200 backstroke and the 200 individual medley, setting personal bests in both races. His backstroke time of 1:57.93 notched sixth place, while his 200 I.M. time of 1:59.33 – the fourth-best in WU history – earned 10th place. A number of other Bearcats achieved personal bests at last year’s NWC championships as well.

THE fIRST UNIVERSITY IN THE WESTWillamette’s curriculum and collaborative learning environment allow you to explore a wide variety of subjects that are critical to helping you navigate the world around you.

Whether working one-on-one with a professor, studying abroad, pursuing innovative research, interning with a business or nonprofit, or leading a campus organization, you can hone your creativity, global perspective and critical thinking for a lifetime of success.

Willamette professors contribute a wide range of expertise to create a dynamic and collaborative learning environment for their students. They engage in scholarly research and publication, but they are also committed to teaching and serving as mentors and advisors.

Since 1990, ten Willamette faculty members have been named Oregon Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation. They have been honored among the most outstanding undergraduate instructors in the country for excelling in teaching and positively influencing the lives and careers of their students.

With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions.

The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100

student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too.

Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette.

Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes.

Our alumni say their time at Willamette was life-changing, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.

Located in the heart of the Willamette Valley, the university is situated ideally to access all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest. Gorgeous forests, rivers, mountains and ocean beaches nearby. A relaxed and creative culture. Vibrant arts and music scenes. And, coffee shops on almost every block.

Willamette University is in the heart of downtown Salem, Oregon’s capital, a community that is large enough to provide plenty of entertainment, yet personal enough that you’ll usually run into someone you know.

When you want to enjoy some of Oregon’s attractions located outside Salem, it’s easy to find a university organized trip or an informal group of friends to join you — whether you plan to snowboard on Mount Hood, catch a concert in Portland or build a bonfire at the coast.

PAGE 24 SPoRTS MEDICINE

SPoRTS MEDICINEThe Willamette University’s sports medicine program provides medical support to our varsity athletes The department consists of two components: service and education.

The service component includes up-to-date evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation and/or referral procedures in the event of an athlete becoming injured or ill.

The education component is designed for any student interested in athletic training or other medical fields to gain valuable experience working in a clinical situation.

Willamette has treatment centers at Sparks Center and McCulloch Stadium. These facilities are staffed by three full-time athletic trainers and several work study students. Students involved in the athletic training program gain valuable work experience by covering practices and games, as well as working in the treatment centers during the academic year.

Our team physicians call Silverton Hospital their home and our physical therapy contractor is PT Northwest. From our three full-time athletic trainers to our doctors and physical therapists, Willamette athletes receive top notch medical care.

PAGE 25NoRTHWEST CoNfERENCE & THE NCAA

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports.

Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth.

NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves.

For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.

Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978.

Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009.

The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998.

Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.
