In its 35th year of NCAA competition, UAA Athletics posted its most impressive perfor-mance yet in 2011-12, finishing a program-best 16th nationally in the Learfield Sports Direc-tor’s Cup among NCAA II teams - among the top six percent in the country. Along the way UAA produced one individual national champi-on, three NCAA West Region titles, three Great Northwest Athletic Conference titles and two GNAC runner-up finishes. The Seawolves qualified teams or individuals from 10 of 11 sports for NCAA competition and got top-8 national team placings from women’s basket-ball both men’s and women’s cross country teams and skiing. In addition, the Seawolves combined for a stellar 3.18 overall grade-point average in 2011-12, marking the 15th time in the last 18 years that the 3.0 barrier has been broken. Women's Basketball The Seawolves continued their incredible six-year run with a 30-5 record, the GNAC regular-
season and tournament titles, and the program’s third NCAA Elite Eight appearance in five sea-sons. UAA finished No. 7 in the final NCAA Div. II Top 25 poll after knocking off 4th-ranked UC San Diego on the road to win the West Regional Championships. The only pro-gram to win 30 games in three of the past five years, UAA went unbeaten (15-0) at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex and led the nation in margin of victory (+21.9). Led by All-American Hanna Johansson, the Seawolves also became the first basketball program — women’s or men’s — to sweep the major GNAC honors, with Johansson (Player of the Year), Haley Holmstead (Newcomer of the Year), Gritt Ryder (Freshman of the Year) and Tim Moser (Coach of the Year). Men's Basketball UAA made it seven straight winning sea-sons and earned its fifth NCAA Tourna-ment berth in that span, posting a 23-7 record and finishing runner-up by just one game in the GNAC standings. The Sea-wolves earned the No. 2 seed at the West Region Cham-pionships and reached the second round for the second straight year, ending with a final national rank of No. 16. UAA’s winning per-centage of .767 was the second-best in program history while the 23 victories tied for the fourth-most in 35 years of NCAA competition. GNAC Player of the Year Taylor Rohde be-came the first consensus All-American in pro-gram history and was named the National Play-er of the Year by Division II Bulletin.

Men’s & Women’s Cross Country The men’s and women’s cross country running delivered a dominant campaign, completing the regular season with a perfect 12 team victories before finishing sixth on the women’s side and eighth on the men’s side at the 2011 NCAA Div. II Championships for the second straight season. Combined, UAA earned four All-America honors and landed 12 runners on the All-West Region team and eight on the All-GNAC team. Both squads swept the GNAC Championships and NCAA Div. II West Re-gion Championships for the second consecutive year. Individually, senior Ruth Keino — who completed the regular season undefeated — and junior Micah Chelimo were named the West Region and GNAC Female and Male Runners of the Year, respectively, while head coach Mi-chael Friess swept the men’s and women’s re-gion and league coach-of-the-year honors for the second straight season.
Gymnastics Overcoming injuries and early-season adversi-ty, the Seawolf gymnasts finished strong with highs in their final three regular-season meets. UAA posted 192.625 points in its final home meet against Michigan State for the sixth-best score in program history and the second-highest at the WFSC. Six Seawolves earned All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors and four made the league’s all-academic squad, while freshman Morgan Cook became just the 10th UAA gymnast to earn an all-around berth in the NCAA West Regional Championships.
Hockey The Seawolves concluded the 2011-12 cam-paign with a 9-25-2 overall record and a 5-22-1 slate in league play, falling to eventual Frozen Four qualifier Minnesota in the first round of the WCHA Playoffs. Highlighting the season was a 3-2 win over then No. 1-ranked Minneso-ta Duluth, along with upsets of No. 6 Colorado

Men’s & Women’s Track and Field The 2012 track & field slate will go down in the record book as UAA's best to date, follow-ing the most successful performance at the NCAA Div. II Track & Field Championships, May 24-26. The men's program, led by NCAA 5,000 meters champion Micah Chelimo, posted
a program-best 28 points, giving the Seawolves their first ever top-10 team placing, finishing 9th. Meanwhile, the women's team registered a program-best 17 points, good for a tie for 11th. Combined, UAA furnished a program-best 10 All-America honors - six women's, four men's - with Chelimo and Susan Tanui each earning two. Chelimo, the West Region and GNAC Male Track & Field Athlete of the Year, also finished runner-up in the NCAA 3,000-meter steeplechase, while Tanui, the co-GNAC Fe-male Track & Field Athlete of the Year, fin-ished runner-up in the steeplechase and 8th in the 5,000 meters at Nationals. In 1993, the University of Alaska Anchorage hockey program became a full-fledged member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
Begun in 1952, the WCHA has established itself as the premier collegiate hockey conference in the country. With the addition of Nebraska-Omaha and Bemidji State in 2010-11, the league membership has risen to 12 teams.
The WCHA leads the nation in national cham-pions, NCAA Championship winning percentage and NCAA Frozen Four appearances (95).
The WCHA perennially leads the nation in college hockey attendance and has attracted more than one million fans each of the last ten years – becoming the first collegiate hockey conference to do so. This past season, WCHA teams attracted 2,292,594 fans.
On the ice, the WCHA has produced more National Hockey League players (more than 300) and Olympians than any other conference. That list includes the likes of Chris Chelios, Ed Belfour, Tony Esposito, Brett Hull, Mike Richter, Matt Carle, Curtis Joseph, Tomas Vanek, Glenn Ander-son, Jordan Leopold, Jonathan Toews, Zach Parise and UAA’s own Curtis Glencross.
League teams compete in some of the finest arenas in all of college hockey, including Minne-sota’s Mariucci Arena, North Dakota’s Englestad Arena, Wisconsin’s Kohl Center, Colorado Col-lege’s World Arena, Denver’s Magness Arena and UAA’s own Sullivan Arena.
The annual conference playoff championship, now known as the WCHA Final Five, continues to be one of the most successful postseason college tournaments of its kind.

Success In The Classroom At the University of Alaska Anchorage, we take great pride
in the academic achievements of our student-athletes. On the average UAA student-athletes have maintained a cumulative grade point average of better than 3.0 in 15 of the past 18 years — well ahead of the norm for all students. Seawolf Corporate Sponsors have had a direct bearing on our academic success, including the donation of laptop computers for student-athletes to use during road trips. Following is snapshot information on our student-athletes’ success in the classroom.

A DOPT A UNIVERSITY…The depart-ment sponsors an “Adopt a University”
program with Anchorage and Mat-Su Valley public high schools as well as some Anchor-age-area private schools for the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. The pro-gram allows extensive interaction between visiting Shootout teams and local high school students. Students can learn more about their adopted university while offering support through cheerleaders, band, trainers and sports information. The local schools may also get involved with providing supple-mental practice sites, as well as the Thanks-giving Dinner program.
S UPPORT FOR NON-PROFITS…Each year UAA Athletics adopts a non-
profit program – generally focusing on health and/or youth issues – to support on a depart-ment-wide basis. Our current non-profit part-ner is the Children’s Hospital at Providence Hospital. In the past, UAA Athletics has sup-ported programs such as Nothing But Nets, Shots for Tots, Alaska Special Olympics, Alaska SafeKids, The V Foundation, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Anchorage Center for Families, the Anchorage Immun-ization Partners Coalition, Children’s Miracle Network, Life Alaska and the Alaska Litera-cy Program.
A THLETIC SPEAKERS BUREAU…The department’s coaches and adminis-
trators are frequent speakers at youth team banquets and civic organization luncheons, promoting Seawolf athletics in addition to educating the public about key issues in col-lege athletics.
R EADING WITH THE SEA-WOLVES...For years UAA student-
athletes have been active in the community, especially through reading programs at An-chorage-area elementary schools. That activi-ty has been formalized in a program called Reading With The Seawolves, whereby a cross-section of student-athletes visit differ-ent elementary schools each year to share their favorite children’s books.
S CHOOL CLINICS…The department’s coaches are frequent speakers at clinics
throughout the state, sharing their expertise with elementary and secondary school coach-es seeking to enhance their skills.
W OMEN’S VOLLEYBALL, HOOPS CLINICS…The women’s volleyball
and basketball teams have been active with such activities as post-game clinics and Jun-ior High and Girl Scout Nights at home con-tests.
T ICKET DONATIONS…The department provides tickets and door prizes to ele-
mentary schools for programs that promote academic achievement.
S PORTS CAMPS...Each summer UAA coaches host a variety of youth skills
camps that are both fun and challenging. Among others, these include the popular Kendall Jump Shot basketball camp under the direction of men’s basketball head coach Rusty Osborne and the Seawolf Volleyball Camps under the direction of Chris Green.

A Any individual who is a member of the institu-tion’s athletics booster club, has made dona-
tions to the booster club or the athletics department, is involved in any manner in recruiting prospects or in providing benefits (e.g., summer jobs) to enrolled student-athletes, or is otherwise involved in promot-ing the institution’s athletics program.
Q Is the institution responsible for the acts of athletics representatives and booster sup-
port groups?
