Head Coach: Bob Lynch (La Salle ‘79) - 24th season

2012-13 ROSTER

Guiding 17 Hawks to All-Conference honors, Bob Lynch begins his 24th season as the head coach of theSaint Joseph’s golf program. The architect of one of the region’s most demandingschedules, Lynch took the Saint Joseph’s program to thecusp of its first-ever NCAA Championship berth in 2003 asthe Hawks placed second at the Atlantic 10 Championship. The Crimson and Gray’s previous best effort at A-10s wasthird place, a feat the squad accomplished three straight

seasons from 1993-95. He also guided the team to a berth in the Eastern Intercollegiate GolfAssociation Championships each of those seasons.

In his career as head coach, Lynch has compiled an overall record of 20 wins and 22 losses. Thelast dual meet competition for SJU was a 426-465 win over Lafayette at Llanerch Country Clubduring the 1992-93 season. Additionally, several former Hawks have gone on to have stellar careers thanks to his coaching. Mike McDermott ‘97 won the 2008 GolfAssociation of Philadelphia Amateur Championship and competed in the U.S. Amateur Championship. Phil Arouca ‘07 claimed the 2011 IllinoisOpen, while Steve Hudacek ‘09 advanced to finals of the 2011 Golf Association of Philadelphia Amateur Championship.

2011-12 YEAR IN REVIEW

2012-13 SAINT JOSEPH’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE9

Playing with a roster of mostly newcomers, the Saint Joseph’s golfteam struggled to find consistency in 2011-12. With a combined six fresh-men and sophomores on this year’s squad, the Hawks relied on returningscoring leader Jimmy Bea to lead the way.

Opening the season at the Navy Fall Invitational, Bea and freshmanConnor Garrity carried SJU to a 10th-place finish. Bea posted one of hisseven top-20 finishes at the season-opening tournament, tying for 13th,while Garrity finished six strokes back to tie for 29th in his first collegiatematch.

The duo of Bea and Garrity would finish one-two for Saint Joseph’s atthe next two events as well, but the Hawks, as a team, couldn’t find con-sistent scoring throughout the lineup.

Facing talented opponents at the Adams Cup, Saint Joseph’s finishedin 17th place, and followed with a 12th-place finish at the Cobra-PUMAInvitational, despite Bea’s tie for 19th.

The Hawks would get three strong performances from Bea to cap theFall portion of their schedule. After finishing tied for 25th at the Big 5Classic, Bea came on strong tying for seventh at the Georgetown HoyaIntercollegiate and tying for 15th at the Old Dominion/OuterbanksCollegiate.

Despite three solid outings by the Hawks’ senior, Saint Joseph’s con-tinued to struggle with steady scoring from its youthful roster as it fin-ished toward the bottom of the field.

After a tough outing at the C & F Bank Invitational to start the spring,Bea posted three stellar showings, finishing 15th at the Villanova WildcatInvitational, 10th at the Princeton Invitational and tying for fifth at theNavy Spring Invitational.

Saint Joseph’s steadily improved over the course of the Spring, withthe Hawks posting their best performance at the Navy Spring Invitationalwith a tie for eighth place.

The Hawks finished the season with their most balanced effort.Competing for the Atlantic 10 crown at the Heron Bay Golf Club, SaintJoseph’s opened the tournament in the middle of the pack, just eightshots back of fourth place.

With torrential rain during the second round, the Hawks slipped backto ninth place, but all five SJU golfers remained competitive, ranging justseven strokes between them.

Unfortunately for Saint Joseph’s, the third and final round was calledoff due to the rain, leaving the Hawks in ninth place, while Bea capped hiscollegiate career tying for 31st and fellow senior Andrew Jaskel tied for40th two shots behind.

HISTORY

2012-13 SAINT JOSEPH’S GOLF MEDIA GUIDE11

The 1962-63 SJU golf team went 11-1 duringtheseason, won the Middle Atlantic ConferenceTitle and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

Golf has a long and storied tradition of success at Saint Joseph’s University. One of the oldest athletic pro-grams on campus, golf debuted as a varsity sport in 1931 as it replaced baseball on Hawk Hill.

The first Saint Joseph’s team - consisting of Gene Barnes, John McCormick, Frank Daly, James McCormick,Francis Gallagher, Michael Cullather, George Hartigan, Leo Murphy, John Lehman, Allen Seltzer, Joseph Stanton, and Joseph Schaeffer - played its first match in the Spring of 1931 against the University of Delaware at theNewark Country Club.

After posting an 0-6 mark in their inaugural season, the Hawks claimed the program’s first victory in the fallof 1931 as they topped Philadelphia College of Osteopathy, 9-0. Saint Joseph’s also shifted its home that seasonfrom Cobbs Creek to the Cedarbrook Country Club.

The golf program was disbanded from 1942-47 due to World War II, but returned to Hawk Hill in the springof 1948. Playing out of the Bala Country Club, Saint Joseph’s return to the course was spearheaded by seniorsTom Shannon and Jack McGinty, with future SJU Hall of Famer Paul McDermitt playing out of the top flight forthe Hawks.

As a team, the Hawks’ greatest success came in the early 1960s and late 1970s. Saint Joseph’s won its firstMiddle Atlantic Conference championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 1963; however the teamdecided not to go so that they could make extra money working summer jobs.

The Hawks would again claim the MAC title in 1964 and turned in similar feats from 1875-78 as they wereled by All-America Honorable Mention John Truax.

In 1982, Saint Joseph’s became a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, with the Hawks tying for fourth intheir first conference championship. Saint Joseph’s has since turned in its highest league finish in 2003, placingsecond overall. It previously placed third in 1993, 1994 and 1995.

Left: Paul McDermitt (‘50) served as captain of thegolf team and also lettered in baseball, basketball, and track and field. He graduated with more let-ters than anyone in Saint Joseph’s history, and wasenshrined in the SJU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.

Center: Mike (‘97) and Kevin (‘99) McDermottearned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors a com-bined five times during their years on Hawk Hill.

Right: Jason Buccino (‘95) was named Atlantic 10All-Conference in 1993 and 1995. Buccino, theMcDermott brothers, Mark Parisi (‘96) and BillyStewart (‘06) are the only Hawks to receive thishonor multiple times.

The Hawks claimed their second-straight MACtitle in 1964 as Bob Toner (fourth from the left)claimed medalist honors.

ATLANTIC 10

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is nowthe Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eight-school, men’s basket-ball-only affiliation has grown into a 16-univer-sity, 21-sport league that is universally hailed asone of the best conferences in the country.

That growth and prominence is a directresult of the ideals and commitments of themember institutions of the Atlantic 10 – ButlerUniversity, the University of Dayton, DuquesneUniversity, Fordham University, The GeorgeWashington University, La Salle University,University of Massachusetts, University ofNorth Carolina at Charlotte, University ofRhode Island, University of Richmond, St.Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph'sUniversity, Saint Louis University, TempleUniversity, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Xavier University.

In 2011-12, the Atlantic 10 was proactive innavigating the sweeping conference realign-ment issues, adding Butler University andVirginia Commonwealth University, both ofwhich began full membership on July 1, 2012.The league was declared the “winner” of con-ference realignment by several media outlets, arguably strengthening the league to its best-ever lineup with a record 16 members institu-tions. The additions were part of a five-yearStrategic Initiative Plan that was adopted dur-ing the 2010-11 academic year.

The 16 member institutions of the A-10 areunited and strengthened by their diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educational mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a private universityor a land grant institution. The varied pursuitsof each member prove that there are manythreads that weave the fabric for a great con-ference.

The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a totalpopulation of over 82 million people within itsgeographic footprint of nine states and theDistrict of Columbia, will crown champions in21 sports this year: baseball, men's andwomen's basketball, men's and women's crosscountry, field hockey, men's golf, women’slacrosse, men's and women's indoor and out-door track & field, women's rowing, men's andwomen's soccer, softball, men's and women'sswimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's volleyball.

The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic10 institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, havemade a strong commitment to making the aca-demic and athletics equation a successful one.Over the years, the league membership hasstrived to better recognize the academicaccomplishments of its student-athletes. The

Commissioner's Honor Roll, which cites everyAtlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 gradepoint average or better, recognized a record1,359 student-athletes in the Fall 2011,

The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports and hon-ors two student-athletes as the A-10 Student-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10provides four postgraduate scholarship grantsto qualified student-athletes. In 2011-12, near-ly 200 student-athletes earned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Dayton’s YvonneMarten, Jennifer Nalepa from Saint Louis,Marissa Norman of Rhode Island andCharlotte’s Macey Ruble received postgraduatescholarship grants.

The Atlantic 10 has 56 of the more than950 Division I sports teams being honored withpublic recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. TheAtlantic 10 Conference ranks fourth in numberof teams publically recognized by the NCAA andfifth in overall APR average among all 32Division I Conferences with a 981 average. Theleague boasted 40 squads with perfect scoresand 104 teams with a score of 990 or better. Intotal, 188 A-10 teams were at or above thenational average, representing 70 percent of allA-10 teams. Of the 21 championship sponsoredsports in the Atlantic 10, 19 had a sport averagehigher than the national average. There are sixsports (field hockey, women's cross country, lacrosse, women's swimming & diving, women's indoor track & field and women's out-door track & field) in which every A-10 team inthat sport is above the national average.

The Atlantic 10 boasted a third-place rank-ing in the single-year Graduation Success Rate(GSR) among all Division I leagues. Measured ina six-year window, 89 percent of freshmanenrolling in an A-10 institution in 2004 graduat-ed. Twelve of the league's 14 institutions areabove the national four-year GSR average of 8opercent and five of those programs, Dayton,George Washington, Richmond, Saint Joseph'sand Xavier are all over 90 percent. The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant

motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto,“The Hawk Will Never Die”.

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At thattime, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol. More than 100submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name wasappropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive ofthe aerial attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJUfollowing the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 56-year history. It has been selected as thenation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’sBasketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee for the 2008 Mascot Hall ofFame.
