    Presidents Report from Natalie Jupe

It is hard to believe that I have been President for 1 whole month. This year is going way too fast.

Last Saturday I went to the Social Media training that was put on by the District. It was very interesting to see so manyclubs in the District wanting to get on Facebook.

As you all know we have Facebook page, but thanks to Travis Holland from the Rotaract Club of Southern Highlands,we are now able to publish our newsletter online via a free site called SCRIBD. If anyone wants to learn more abouthow this works, please let me know, but I am sure you will all agree it is a much easier way to download your copy ofthe Keyway, instead of filling up your email inbox with a huge file.

A few quick things to mention

DG Phil is making his official visit to our club tonight, so I hope to see as many members at the meeting as

    possible.

Reminder to keep 22 & 23 September free as we will need volunteers for selling Gnomes at Floriade

Please consider going to the District Conference on 26, 27 and 28 October a good excuse to go to the coast

for a weekend, and you get to have breakfast at Mogo Zoo which sounds like fun!!! But if you are going to go,

you will need to register via the district website athttp://www.rotaryd9710.org.au/

It is not long now until our first Friendship Beyond Club Functions event movies at Manuka onTuesday 14 August.Final details will be announced closer to the date regarding session time and movie;however we can confirm that we will meet in the lobby before the movie and it is every man for themselfwhen it comes to buying tickets etc. And for those who feel inspired afterwards and want to go for a coffeeor ice cream, well you are more than welcome to do this as well - it really is up to you since this NOT A

    FORMAL EVENT

A FBCF event is something that was discussed at the President Elect training earlier this year. It is purelya chance for Rotarians, friends and family to have a social outing of some kind (other than socializing atclub functions).

Our second FBCF event will be a Coffee & Cake morning tea in October.

We will see how these first two go, and if successful we will try to have a FBCF event ever few months.

If you have any suggestions for what types of outings we should host, please let us know.

    Hi everyone!

I am training for the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival half marathon event on 16 September 2012 with Can

Too, a non-profit program that matches fitness incentives with a good cause.

Beginners and experienced athletes alike are given professional coaching as part of a team to run or swim in

endurance events - including 10km, half-marathon and marathon runs; as well as ocean swims.

In return, I will raise valuable funds that go directly towards funding cancer researchers through Cure Cancer

Australia. The money I raise will be used to fund scientists in their pursuit of a cure for this dreadful disease.

The ultimate vision of Cure Cancer is 'A world without cancer, nothing less'. A vision I wholeheartedly support

    and hope for.

Please support me in my efforts to raise funds for this amazing charity who are helping reduce the number of

patients and their families who are affected by this disease.

Thank you for your support, it will make the freezing evening runs at the track, the early morning starts on the

weekend and the sometimes very tired and very sore legs well worth it.

    Wish me luck!Simone Fisher.

A good news story from the ACT regionhttp://hometutoract.wordpress.com/

    and

    http://cit.edu.au/industry_business/industry_connection/2012_july/cit_home_tutor_scheme_helps_migrants_

    and_refugees_overcome_barriers

    ACT AMEP Home Tutor Scheme

The Home Tutor Scheme in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is part of theAdult Migrant English

    Program (AMEP).

It helps eligible adult migrants and refugees who cannot attend English classes. Volunteer tutors visit

students in their homes for one to two hours per week to provide English language tuition.

In the ACT, the AMEP Home Tutor Scheme is conducted by the CIT Vocational College, Canberra Institute of

    Technology.

    Who are the tutors?

Tutors are volunteers who are interested in helping others to learn English and to learn about life in

Australia. The ACT AMEP Home Tutor Scheme provides free training, ongoing support and resources for all

    volunteer tutors.

CIT Home Tutor Scheme helps migrants and refugees overcome barriers

Mohammed Salehi (Sonny) knows what it's like to be forced to flee one's home country for a land where

    nothing at all makes sense.

Arriving in 2001 as a refugee from Afghanistan, Sonny knew nothing about Australia, and didn't speak

English. He soon found out it was impossible to settle without overcoming these barriers."If you can't speak English you have no idea where to go or what to do (in Australia); you can't be

    someone," Sonny said.

The journey to being able to call a new country with a different language, culture and systems 'home' can

be long and arduous without the right support.

For Sonny, it wasn't until 2004 that everything began to fall into place for him - when he was linked into

    the CIT Home Tutor Scheme.

The CIT Home Tutor Scheme is part of the Adult Migrant English Program funded by the AustralianGovernment Department of Immigration and Citizenship. Volunteer tutors are matched with a student to

provide one-on-one English lessons in their own home. The program is provided for people who cannot

attend English classes, helping ensure people that need support don't fall through the cracks.

Tutors are not teachers, but volunteers from the community. Their role is not an easy one - while

navigating cultural and language barriers, tutors also must tailor lessons to suit their student's ability and

    needs.

Tina Williamson, coordinator of the Home Tutor Scheme, explains that while teaching English is an

important part of the tutors' role, lessons need not necessarily end there.

"Tutors sometimes take their student on the bus and show them how to buy a ticket and get around

Canberra. They show them how to order food and use an ATM, they take them to the library and teach

them how to borrow books and use the internet. In many cases, they teach their students how to learn and

to organise the things they have learnt. They help them to find work, join a playgroup, enter study, find a

house, get a learner's permit, return goods to a shop, visit the doctor and even to become Australian

    citizens," Tina said.

"Tutors really become mentors to their students. They make sure migrants and refugees have the

opportunity to be and feel part of the community."

Sonny agrees that the program was a turning point for him.

"Home tutors introduce you to Australia and introduce Australia to you. They help you learn everyday

things and help you connect to the people and the culture."

"The Home Tutor program was the key to life in Australia for me."

The CIT Home Tutor Program was recently awarded the 2012 ACT Volunteer Team of the Year. CIT is

always happy to welcome new volunteers into the program. Free, training and ongoing support is

    provided.
