Editorial

You may notice changes throughout the magazine this month. Firstly, until now the magazine was paid for by a mixture of advertising and subscriptions. Although two thirds of the village took the magazine, to be really useful it needed to be delivered to all 300 houses. Therefore, I have abandoned subscriptions and the whole magazine is to be financed by advertising and delivered free to every home. Ian Whiting places the magazine on the Cople village website www.cople.org.uk. Apart from going ―global‖ you will be able to see pictures in colour that sometimes lose their impact in black and white.

Our regular advertisers have generously accepted higher rates in return for a wider circulation. Their continued support is greatly appreciated. If I sell 20 pages of advertising I can cover the costs of publication. Those who take the trouble to count the pages should not include notices of events or charitable ventures which do not pay. One of the main reasons for having a village magazine is to tell you about them.

I would like to welcome our new advertisers. The Five Bells, Richard Ielden at the garage, Dave Crawford the handyman, SJ tax and Accounting, JB Plumbing and Heating and Robert Brooks of Solid Fuel Boilers. In addition Barry Wells and The Summerhill Farm Shop have doubled the size of their adverts. If you use any of the services advertised please let them know that you saw the advert in the ―Cople News‖. It is reassuring for

them to know that advertising with us is worthwhile.

Another aim is to have all village activities represented. The regular inputs from the Church, the Mothers Union, Tuesday Club, Friends of Cople Church, the police and the Over 60‘s have been joined by new contributors. Helen Johnson, the Head Teacher, will keep us up to date with happenings at the Cople

Lower School. Stephen Halton will write a monthly wild life article and the Lawn Doctor will cover topical gardening points. The Sports and Social Club will also use the magazine to tell us

what is on offer and the Parish Council will let us know about issues of the moment. A ―Sales and Wants‖ page might have some appeal. The only way to find out is to offer it up. Details are on page 50.

This month Verity Yarrow has a newsy item from Willingtots and Julie Crawford has written an article about Pilates. Julie has been teaching Pilates for 12 years and is a long time supporter of village events. My wife Jane tells me that at least 10 people from Cople attend her classes. One-off contributions like these are most welcome. If you are involved in something please think about joining in. You may consider your subject mundane but is will be news to the rest of us.

Wendy Worgan introduces herself on page 30. She is the Cople village agent for ―Just Ask‖. The Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity (BRCC) employs part-time village agents in the Bedford Borough‘s area, funded by Bedford Borough Council, Bedford Health & Well-being Partnership and Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. ―Just Ask‖ village agents help bridge the gap between people and officialdom in its many guises. It is a

new venture and should be very useful.

Andrew Duthie has agreed to take over as treasurer of Cople News and Liz Buck and her team of distributors are working on a plan to get the magazine to every house in the village. If you are reading this the plan must have worked.

If it is happening in or around Cople let every body know about it. What are the footballers doing we wonder? Has anyone got a favourite recipe, especially ones using seasonal foods? The high and lows of keeping chickens may entertain. I for one would love to know what is happening in the farming community. The list is endless. A page of type like this one uses 260 to 300 words but contributions can be as short or as long as you wish. I look forward to your contributions.

On behalf of the Cople News team may I wish everyone a Happy New Year and we hope that you find the magazine both enjoyable and useful.

Letter from the Vicarage

This year New Year‘s Day falls on a Sunday. So it affords

an ideal opportunity to have a special service to give

thanks for the past year and pray for God‘s blessing during

the coming year. The service will be on Sunday 1st January at 11.15am (this should allow enough time to

sober up after a hangover) it will take the form of a ―Songs

of Praise‖ with appropriate hymns, bible readings and poems. In my last parish we had a similar kind of service

in 2000 when we welcomed in the new millennium. It was

a poignant occasion with a good congregation and a peel of bells ringing out across the village.

Of course I cannot promise either of those but I do hope

that you will be able to join us to pray for a happy and blessed new year. For some of you perhaps 2011 has

been a sad or difficult year and you are glad that it has

ended. For others it may have been a wonderful year if it was when you got married, started a family or celebrated a

special birthday.

As a nation we are looking forward to the Queen‘s

Diamond Jubilee in June and the Olympics later in the

summer. The village is already making plans to celebrate

the jubilee which is really exciting. I remember well the Golden Jubilee when I was Vicar of Weston . We had a

street party, games for the children and a competition to

decorate your wheelie bin. A friend of mine won. She painted the top gold and inside put in a royal look alike

complete with a two piece, pearls and a white gloved hand

waving. There was a recorded message in Royal Received

Pronunciation saying ―I‘ve bin Queen for 50 years‖. Sadly

(Continued on page 7)

Page 7: 2012 01

7

January 2012

the Queen did not learn about this or my friend would have

received an OBE for her effort. Neither did the Council

prosecute her for defacing their bin. It was all great fun.

So what are your hopes and fears for the coming year? Or

maybe you have an open mind and will simply take one day at a time.

I suspect most of us simply want to be happy and to use our lives well . To make a difference to this world and to

do whatever good we can to whomever we can.

I have many favourite prayers but I find this one helpful as I begin a new year.

Maybe you too would like to make it your own.

―Lord you are tender towards your children

and your mercy is over all your works. Heal the memories of hurt and failure

Give us the wisdom and grace to use aright

the time that is left to us here on earth,

to turn to Christ and follow in his steps in the way that leads to everlasting life

AMEN.

With my love and prayers for the

coming year.

Curate’s Corner

May I begin by wishing you all a very happy

and peaceful New Year.

The beginning of a new year is the ideal time resolve

to take up new challenges and our sister church at

Moggerhanger is doing just that. St John‘s Church Moggerhanger is trying out a new style of service for the

New Year and would like to invite you to join them.

The services, which will not include the Eucharist or Communion, will be held on the third Sunday of the

month. The first one will be on Sunday 15th January at

6pm and is billed as a ―Songs of Praise!‖

We will be singing popular, well known hymns and songs

and hearing a little about the history behind the words and music.

If you would like to come then just turn up on the evening

and you will be made most welcome, there‘s even the promise of a cup of coffee at the end.

We look forward to welcoming you,

Jackie Buck

Mission Possible

―Last night was cold and wet and tonight looks even

worse; I‘ve not had a good meal for a couple of days; new to town I was beaten up the last time I slept in the

park.‖

―We resorted to borrowing a tin of soup from next door to

feed our 18month old daughter. The problems came when

my partner got ill and received no sick pay. It was snowing and we were struggling to afford food and

heating. In the end the cupboards were bare. I don‘t

know what we would have done without the food bank.‖

This year we are supporting 2 charities for those who are

struggling. The King‘s Arms Project and the Bedford Food

Bank. [email protected] and www.trusselltrust.org. We hope to have a speaker at our Family service on

Sunday 4th March from the King‘s Arms Project

explaining about work with the homeless. Our Lent giving will be for this charity, as will a poverty lunch at the

Benefice Service at Moggerhanger on April 29th.

To support the Bedford Food bank there will be a box at the back of the Church for non perishable goods so you

can donate throughout the year as you are able. The food

is collected and sorted in a local warehouse and given to families who are in need of emergency supplies who have

vouchers from front line professionals.

In November, members met at the Church to pack a

shoebox and fill 5 cheer-up bags. We also collected a large number of blankets, teddies, jumpers and mittens to

be distributed both here and overseas.

In December, members and friends enjoyed an afternoon

of seasonal readings and carols at Glebe House. This was followed by tea and mince pies and a chance to thank

personally those who have been sewing and knitting away

towards our projects. We hope they will all continue to do

so for the next year. Judith was warmly thanked for her hospitality.

We do not meet in January, so our next meeting will be

held on Monday 6th February at 2:30 pm at 32 Rye

Crescent.

We wish everyone a happy and peaceful new year.

Wild About Cople Hello everyone! I moved to Cople 3 years ago with my partner Eve and now a new addition, our young rescue dog, Shirley who enjoys walks in the surrounding countryside.

I work for Central Bedfordshire Council as a Community Ecologist working with people and communities to help them look after and enjoy their local countryside, green spaces and wildlife. I help with funding, lead guided walks and talks, carry out wildlife surveys, work with farmers on conservation projects and advise people generally on conservation. I also work with protected species ie; bats and dormice and advise planners and developers on these animals.

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to work with wildlife and feel very privileged to work in wildlife conservation as my career. I have worked for the RSPB, National Trust, Welsh Wildlife Trust (as Warden on a Pembrokeshire island) and as a consultant ecologist, amongst others! I also did a Fine Art degree in Wildlife Illustration as I enjoy drawing and painting wildlife too.

So, here I am in a busy, varied job which I feel very passionate about and, with a new editor for Cople News, I thought it might be interesting to do a regular 'wildlife page' about what can be seen and heard in and around the village.

Well, that's enough about me so let's start with something seasonal. Over the last couple of months two species of birds have been winging their way over the North Sea, from Scandinavia, to spend the winter with us feeding on fruit and berries. All the summer visitors have gone but these two enliven the winter landscape. They are the Redwing and the Fieldfare and are both members of the Thrush family.

Stand outside on a damp, misty night and you might hear a thin, high-pitched 'seep' call from high overhead. This is the contact call of the Redwing as they migrate in flocks; the call keeps

(Continued on page 17)

Page 17: 2012 01

17

January 2012

them in touch in the dark and the fog. Their name comes from a reddish-orange patch in their 'armpit' and they have a very conspicuous creamy eye stripe.

The Fieldfare is a larger, more boisterous bird, attractively marked in grey, cream and buff with a brown back and speckled breast. They are fairly common in the hedges around Cople at the moment, often in small groups; listen out for their harsh 'chack-chack' call as they fly overhead. The name Fieldfare comes from the Old English Fealu For e which means ‗Fallow Farer‘.

In spring both will return back to Scandinavia to breed although a few Redwings do remain to breed in Scotland.

Lastly, if you are interested in Bedfordshire botany a new book 'The Flora of Bedfordshire' has just been published. I was at the launch last weekend and it is a mammoth tome covering all the wild plants of the county. To find out more go to: www.bnhs.co.uk/flora/html/index.htm.

More next month. . . Feel free to contact me if you have a question or have any observations.

Cople Sports and Social Club

Cople Sports and Social Club was officially opened in August 1984 by the Mayor of Bedford. The Club was built to replace the green wooden sports pavilion that was still standing and

provided changing facilities for the football and cricket players. The work that took place into building and refurbishing the club was carried out by local volunteers giving their time and expertise. Cople Sports and Social Club is a non profit entity and any surplus funds are put back into the club. The Club is self sufficient and belongs to the Cople Village Trust.

Cople Sports and Social Club at present accommodates and

provides facilities to sporting activities including football and cricket. It also provides social activities for the local community. There is a licensed bar and facilitates to hold private functions. The Club and bar are open every weekend and some week nights. We often hold themed evenings which have included Caribbean night and Latino night we are a family friendly and welcoming. We also have supper nights which we provide meals

at a small cost.

We have sky television installed and open the bar for sporting events including; football, cricket, golf, rugby etc.

To be able to use the club on a regular basis we ask people to take up a yearly membership. Once you are a member you can invite non member guests to join you on occasions. A family membership is £8.00 and a single membership is £5.00.

We are holding a supper night on Saturday 4th February 2012 ‗Curry night‘

Update from PC Paul Jones NEW POLICE NON EMERGENCY NUMBER Bedfordshire Police and other forces nationwide are now using ‗101‘ as the non emergency number replacing the existing 01234 841212. You can use this number anywhere in the country and it will take you through the nearest town police station.

CURRENT ISSUES Burglaries We are currently experiencing an increase on burglary dwellings. Bromham, Harrold, Felmersham, Cople, Willington, Great Barford have all experienced at least one burglary during the dates of 7th and 9th of December. Offenders are searching for jewellery and cash. Please ensure all jewellery is kept in an unexpected place in the house, do not leave it on a dressing table in the bedroom. If you witness any suspicious behaviour please call Bedfordshire Police on 101. If you witness any anti social behaviour please contact us on

101.

REDUCING VEHICLE CRIME Lock up, don‘t make it too easy for thieves. Thieves can spot an opportunity. It can take minutes for a thief to steal your car if left unlocked or even less time to take property from inside. Even if you are popping out just for a short while, lock your car. This includes in areas you wouldn‘t expect a

thief such as rural roads. Also make sure all the windows and the sun roof are also closed.

FREE SECURITY SURVEYS We are raising the awareness of FREE security surveys available from your Safer Neighbourhood Team. If you would like us to conduct a survey on your home please contact us. Here are

some quick pointers for general security:

When leaving your house don‘t forget to double lock your

doors and ensure that you haven‘t left any windows open.

Consider leaving a radio on to make it look like someone is

at home.

Attention All Dog Owners!!!!

We are continually receiving complaints from residents regarding the amount of dog mess which certain owners seem loathe to pick up. Please consider children and other people and be a responsible dog owner.

The Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996, empowers local authorities to

designate land upon which it is an offence not to clean up after your dog.

Failure to do so can lead to a £50 fixed penalty ticket being issued, or if a

decision is made to take the offender to court, the fine can be as much as

£1000.

If residents witness any dog fouling could they please contact Bedford Borough Council Enforcement Team on 01234 267422 with details of the dog owner.

Thank you for your help.

This Month’s Gardening Tasks

Around this time of the year, people talk of ‗putting the garden to bed‘ but what does that entail? And why bother,

it doesn‘t happen in nature? The thing is, our gardens are

full of migrants who do so much to brighten our lives but require our help to keep them healthy. A fair quid pro

quo? I think so!

One of the greatest threats to a plant is the frost which

can be fatal. To prevent this, two tasks should be

undertaken: mulching and wrapping. The former simply means laying a material such as general compost, home

made or bought, around the base of the plant. A cover of

around 3 inches (7 ½ centimetres) is perfect. Remember though, acid loving plants such as Azaleas, Camellias,

Pieris and Rhododendrons, should all be mulched with

ericaceous compost. Plants prefer soil that is either alkaline or acid and for any plant to live well and prosper,

the replication of their natural environment is essential.

For roses, I prefer to use a manure based material. In

addition to keeping roots warm, mulching also provides a nutritious pick-me-up.

For some plants, and in recent years Cordylines have

been especially targeted, this will not be enough

protection. All exotics and anything you are worried about should be completely and securely covered from root to

top with a couple of layers of bubble wrap or horticultural

fleece.

Complete these tasks now and your plants will wake in

spring raring to grow!

All the materials alluded to above are available from Lawn Doctor Garden Services, use contact details on page 33.

News from Cople Lower School

The end of the Christmas term was as busy as ever. The

children did themselves proud in their production ‗A Tale of

Two Birthdays‘ in the Village Hall; singing, dancing and acting with great enthusiasm. We enjoyed a visit to the

church for a special Christmas assembly and were joined

by friends and families to sing carols on the playground.

The term finished with a fun filled party day and a special

visit from Santa.

Amongst all the fun and celebration, lots of great learning went on with topics during the term in different classes

covering Light and Space, Chocolate, Disney, Ourselves

and Tudors.

We are looking forward to more exciting activities in the

Spring term including an Indian dance workshop for the Oaks class and a visit to the Shoe Museum in Northampton

for the Acorns and Catkins.

Term starts on Wednesday 4th January

Happy New Year to you all!

Awards for Willingtot’s Staff

As Chair of the Management committee of Willingtots Pre-school, I tend to find myself engrossed in the day to day business such as rewriting policies, processing timesheets and sorting out the expenses so I don’t often have news to share with the village. However on this occasion I would like to take the opportunity to shout about how I spent my evening on Tuesday 29th November.

I had been invited to attend an awards ceremony held by Bedfordshire Training and Assessment Centre (BTAC) at the Corn Exchange in Bedford. I headed into town with my Pre-school Manager, Karen Abrahams and Pre-school Deputy Lisa Tembey. The purpose of the evening was for candidates who had passed their NVQ qualifications to receive their badge and certificate.

We were so proud when Lisa took to the stage to collect her level 2. Shortly afterwards, Karen collected her level 3 and, as she has worked so incredibly hard this year, her level 4 as well. At the end of the evening, there were some special awards for outstanding achievement and the final award was for “Learner of the Year”.

Please read the following and share the pride we have in our Manager.

“This candidate has been known to BTAC since 2007 when she began her journey within childcare doing her level 2. She then progressed to do her level 3. She then found herself in a role of manager and very quickly had to manage an Ofsted Inspection. She began her level 4 qualification in June 2010 and I would say as a new manager has had every situation possible thrown at her, including the bereavement of a child who became ill. This practitioner dealt with each challenge in a professional way, and has made many improvements along the way and with this has evolved into an amazing manager. There was one person that said she would not achieve her level 4 but right from the start I knew she would. She has the commitment, passion and dedication that show what a remarkable practitioner she is. She

can hold her head up high and be really proud and I hope she continues further in her development. This award goes to Karen Abrahams”

Awarded by Helen Field – Lead Internal Assessor, BTAC.

What is Pilates?

Have you heard people mentioning the benefits of Pilates,

and wondered what they are talking about? Have you

heard the talk about Kate Middleton’s bum and Pilates?

Kate has said of Pilates: ―Over the past few months I have noticed a huge difference in my core strength and

posture. From breathing techniques, muscle toning to

overall flexibility and relaxation, my Pilates sessions have become something of a weekly necessity that keeps me

fit, happy and energised.‖

Pilates won‘t turn you into Kate Middleton. However, as

an instructor of the method for over 12 years I will explain

the basics. I would encourage you to find out more if it is something that interests you.

Pilates is a form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates.

Once mastered participants acquire a natural rhythm and

coordination more commonly associated with all

subconscious activities. This true rhythm and control is observed both in domestic pets and wild animals – without

exception.

Pilates matwork, is the most common form taught as it

is easily accessible to all, as no special equipment is needed. Pilates is more complex than other forms of

exercise. It promotes a fusion of western and eastern

philosophies, teaches about breathing with movement,

body mechanics, balance, co-ordination, posture and positioning of the body as well as strength and flexibility.

To gain the full benefit of the method, participants learn to

flow from one movement to the next, building stamina and cardiovascular fitness, whilst following the basic principles

of Pilates.

Pilates uses a low-impact technique which is a

recommended form of exercise and particularly

appropriate for those rehabilitating from injury or illness. Pilates will help improve posture and strengthen and

lengthen muscles without adding bulk. An emphasis on

breathing leaves the client revitalized not exhausted.

The Principles of Pilates

Centring Alignment. Breathing Control. Precision Flowing

Movement. Relaxation.

Pilates is a discipline to be learnt and used as a life skill.
