ChaIrMan’S MeSSage

Farhang’s Fourth yeardear Friends,

By now you know how passionate we are at Farhang Foundation about our mission and how seriously we take our role as a leading organization dedicated to promoting and celebrating the very best of Iranian art and culture for the benefit of the community at large. our sense of duty and pride was eloquently captured by dr. abbas Milani, this year’s Farhang heritage award recipient. In his acceptance speech, dr. Milani stated, “With sober, critical, yet proud realism and learning, we are not just ambassadors but custodians of one of the richest cultural heritages of the world.”

We could not agree with dr. Milani more. the clarity of our vision, quality of our programming, and caliber of our partnerships is a direct result of our passion for and dedication to preserving and sharing our heritage with our communities. as we finish yet another remarkable year at Farhang Foundation, we reflect on the past months and take stock of the events we have produced, programs we have sponsored, and partnerships we have forged, in this Annual Report. this year, in addition to our usual full slate of top notch programming, we expanded our presence in Southern California by sponsoring three Iranian new year celebrations in Pasadena, orange County, and of course, at the los angeles County Museum of art. We continued to collaborate closely with our friends at laCMa, uC Irvine, uCla, and uSC, while establishing new friendships with the renowned Pacific Symphony and Cal Poly Pomona. attendance at our events was at an all-time high. In fact, our 4th Annual Nowruz Celebration at LACMA hosted more than 3,000 guests, making it our most popular nowruz at laCMa event to-date. We sponsored well-established programs such as the UCLA Celebration of Iranian Cinema, while supporting contemporary art exhibitions by new artists such as Siamak Filizadeh and roya Falahi. lastly, but perhaps most notably, our Iranian Studies Initiative at USC made tremendous strides this year. thanks to the generosity of our friends and supporters, uSC now offers Persian language classes for the first time in its history... and this is only the beginning! our continued progress is a reflection of the on-going leadership of our Board of trustees, Councils, and Committees; the dedication of our management and volunteer teams; and of course, the unwavering support and generosity of all our patrons who understand that we all must play a part in preserving our farhang. With the hope that each passing year is a step forward…

Sincerely,

Chairman & Board of trustees

2012 nowruz Contestsnowruz Banners

For the second year in a row, Farhang Foundation called on the public to submit original design concepts that would capture the spirit of Iranian new year – or nowruz – for the promotional street banners of our 4th Annual Nowruz Celebration at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

open to the public, Farhang’s 2012 Nowruz Banner Contest received numerous submissions, but in the end, we could only select one finalist: Navid Ghaem Maghami, a graphic designer based in San Francisco, California.

navid’s elegant and simple design featured two iconic Iranian symbols, the bird and flower (or gol-o-morgh), and went on display during March 2012 on street banners in prominent locations throughout the Westwood areas, Wilshire Corridor, and in the San Fernando Valley.

“In creating the Nowruz banner, my goal was to design an image that draws both traditional and contemporary. Gol-o-morgh (bird and flower) is a cultural symbol

that is deeply rooted in Persian literature. Through a contemporary rendition of this iconic image, I have

created a design that evokes a sense of nostalgia and longing for the past, with hope and joy for a new beginning.” ~ Navid Ghaem Maghami

Call For Community Submissions:Farhang Foundation’s 2012 Nowruz Celebration at LACMA

as part of Farhang Foundation’s continued efforts to engage the community at large in Iranian culture, this year we called on artists to submit proposals for original Performing arts pieces that explored the origins, history, and/or themes of nowruz, to be considered for production as the central programming of our 4th Annual Nowruz Celebration at LACMA. We were overwhelmed by the positive response and selected a multimedia project by Hamid Saeidi called Celebration, a musical and visual exploration of the unifying message of nowruz and the conflicts between tradition and modernity within Iranian culture. Mr. Saeidi, an award-winning composer and internationally acclaimed performer, has composed music for numerous films, television programs, as well as dance and theatrical presentations, including Imaginary Knots, which premiered at laCMa in november 2009. after many months of hard work and collaboration by a number of people, Celebration premiered to rave reviews at laCMa’s leo S. Bing theater during Farhang’s 4th Annual Nowruz Celebration.

Iranian Studies Initiative at uSCIn november 2010, Farhang Foundation and the University of Southern California Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences officially announced the launch of an Iranian Studies Initiative at the university. the first phase of this initiative sought to add Persian language classes to the uSC curriculum for the first time in school history. through the generous support of a passionate community of donors, Farhang Foundation was able to ensure that Persian language classes

would be offered at uSC by the Fall 2011 semester and that Dr. Peyman Nojoumian would be hired as the assistant professor of the teaching of Persian.

according to uSC, the curriculum developed by dr. nojoumian is based on current research on the communicative approach to language teaching for which he designed his own textbooks. additionally, his courses are accompanied by a suite of engaging audio and visual materials that can be deployed through a language lab or online. With Persian language classes now available at uSC and the hiring of an innovative professor such as dr. nojoumian, we have now set our sights on the next phase of this initiative: establishing a Minor degree with a focus on Iranian Studies, while ensuring Persian classes continue to be offered at uSC.

the Iranian Studies Initiative at USC has been our largest fundraising and friend-raising endeavor to-date. and, we are deeply grateful to our community of friends and supporters who continue to believe in our vision at uSC. But these efforts are only the beginning. In the coming years, we hope to initiate similar programs at other top-tier academic institutions; because we believe that academic programs such as the Iranian Studies Initiative will serve to educate, enlighten, and preserve the language, culture, and history of Iran for Iranian-americans and non-Iranians alike for generations to come.

an afternoon with noureddin ZarrinKelk Farhang Foundation and the USC School of Cinematic Arts hosted a very special afternoon with Noureddin ZarrinKelk, widely regarded as the father of Iranian animation, whose illustrious career has spanned half a century. ZarrinKelk began his career at the age of 16, drawing caricatures for Iranian magazines. after earning a Ph.d. in pharmacology, he worked as an illustrator trying to change the long-held tradition of imageless textbooks in Iran. While working at Iran’s Institute for the Intellectual development of Children and young adults, ZarrinKelk saw how animated film can engage young audiences and was soon making films for children. he has since advanced Iranian animation by founding the country’s first animation school, an Ma animation course, and Iran’s branch of the International animated Film Society.

An Afternoon with Noureddin ZarrinKelk featured the north american premiere of ZarrinKelk’s most recent film, Bani Adam, at the eileen norris Cinema theatre at the uSC School of Cinematic arts. the audience was also treated to a retrospective look at ZarrinKelk’s esteemed career, with several guest speakers on hand to offer their perspectives on the famed animator’s legacy. thank you to Zahra Dowlatabadi, Reza Goharzad, Roxanne Varzi and Christine Panushka for takingpart in this program. and, a sincere thanks to Kurosh ValaNejad for organizing this program and bringingit to fruition.

Meet Farhang: Celebrating Mehregan When we hosted our very first Meet Farhang: A Night of Poetry and Nostalgia back in 2010, our goal was to create a program dedicated to honoring the literary legends of Iran in an intimate setting for those who, like us, were passionate about Persian poetry and literature. today, these events are among our most popular and have featured the literary works of dehkhoda, Farrokhzad, Behbahani, Moshiri, naderpour, Sepehri, Saadi, rudaki, araghi, Shahriar, and of course, Ferdowsi. each year, we have been grateful to notable artists who have participated in these programs and helped bring to life the words of these master poets. this past year, we honored Mehregan a time-honored tradition that celebrates Mehr (friendship, affection, and love). the evening featured the magical voice of Fereidoun Farahandouz, who recited poetry about Mehregan and its significance. the talented Gordafarid, credited as the first and only female naqqal, performed pieces from the Shahnameh, recounting tales about Mehregan. guests were also treated to traditional Persian music performed by AVA Music Ensemble, a group of young and passionate Iranian-americans, devoted to staying connected to their cultural roots through music.

explore Farhang:An Afternoon With Sohrab Sepehri due to the appeal of our Meet Farhang series, we launched a new type of programming called Explore Farhang, the first of which took place on november 6, 2011 at the radisson hotel newport Beach. It was an afternoon dedicated to Sohrab Sepehri, his words, paintings, and vision. Joining us that day were Mehdi Sarreshtehdari and Nasrin Beyraghdar, who led an in depth discussion and exploration of Sepehri; and Navid Kandelousi, who shared his musical talents with us during the course of the program. We thank our participants and, of course, our guests in attendance who shared their passion for Sepehri with us over afternoon tea.

a Picture is Worth a thousand WordsWhile we dedicate much of our efforts to honor and celebrate the works of Iranian artists from the past, we also know that it is crucial to nurture and promote the works of contemporary artists. this Fall, Farhang Foundation sponsored a public reception in support of two contemporary photographic exhibitions at the W. Keith and Janet KelloggUniversity Art Gallery at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.

Headbang was the first solo-show of los angeles based artist, Roya Falahi. and, Persian Visions: Contemporary Photography from Iran, featured 58 works by 20 of Iran’s most celebrated photographers and was developed by Hamid Severi.

In attendance, were good friends and new ones, including J. Michael ortiz, President of California State Polytechnic university, Pomona, as well as Michael Woo, dean of College of environmental design, whose department sponsored this program and brought it to fruition.

darius III, the last of the achaemenidsone of our most fruitful relationships since the inception of Farhang Foundation has been with our partners at the Art of the Middle East department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. earlier this year, we sponsored one of our most important academic programs together. Darius III, the Last of the Achaemenids, a lecture by Professor Pierre Briant, offered an enlightening glimpse at the achaemenid king, his possible burial site, and the Macedonian invasion.

Pierre Briant, a Professor of history and Civilization of the achaemenid World at the Collège de France, is considered the foremost historian of ancient Iran in the modern period. during his visit to Southern California, he also participated in a talk at university of California, Irvine. We thank Professor Briant for taking part in these efforts, and laCMa for its continued commitment to promoting Iranian art and culture.

Celebrating nowruz 2012:Iranian New Year at LACMA on Sunday, March 18, 2012, Farhang Foundation hosted its signature event, the 4th Annual Nowruz Celebration at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Featuring Persian musicians and dancers in traditional attire performing across the laCMa campus, story readings and calligraphy for younger guests, and a Haft-Sîn (a traditional centerpiece of nowruz), this year’s event was our biggest nowruz at laCMa to-date, with over three thousand guests in attendance!

as in previous years, the winners of Farhang Foundation’s 4th annual Short Film Festival were announced; with the top prize of $10,000 awarded to My City Pizza by ala Mohseni (uSa). after the ceremony, the winning film submissions played on loop all day for the viewing pleasure of museum visitors.

the official nowruz program included a special awards presentation honoring the recipients of the 2012 Farhang Lifetime Achievement and Heritage Awards. this year, the Farhang Lifetime Achievement Award was posthumously presented to two individuals: Iraj Afshar and Dr. Hossein Ziai. the2012 Farhang Heritage Award was presented to Dr. Abbas Milani, who accepted the award in person. Following the award ceremony, we debuted the eagerly anticipated performance of Hamid Saeidi’s Celebration, a multi-media project with music, dance, and film seeking to bring people and cultures together through the message of nowruz.

the day concluded with a live performance at the museum’s BP grand entrance by Persian r&B recording artist, KamyR, followed by DJ Kabo, who performed for crowds until evening.

Founded in 2009, the Farhang Foundation Short Film Festival has quickly become one of the leading festivals dedicated to celebrating Iranian heritage through the cinematic arts. open to participants from all ethnic and professional backgrounds, our festival has one goal in mind: to offer talented artists and filmmakers a forum in which they can present a short film, video or animated work that will spark and inspire the audience’s interest in learning more about Iranian culture.

Between november 2011 and February 2012, Farhang Foundation’s 4th Annual Short Film Festival received a total of 56 submissions from all over the globe, including the united States, Iran, Canada, and China. and, on Sunday, March 18, 2012, during Farhang’s 4th Annual Nowruz Celebration at LACMA, the winning submissions were announced before a live audience at the museum’s Brown auditorium. First place winner was My City Pizza (uSa) by ala Mohseni, earning the top prize of $10,000. The Voided Loom: Kelardasht’s Carpet (uSa) by Pouya afshar and Sarah Moridpour came in second place and won $5,000. third place winner and the recipient of $3,000 was Change Khongan (Iran) by hossein J. gowhari. rounding out the top six submissions of this year’s festival were Oil Factor (uSa) by Bijan Mottahedeh, The Art of Spirituality (Canada) by Shahram Pirouz, and Kermando (Iran) by hamed akrami, listed in no particular order.

all submitted films were judged by the Jury committee based on the film’s artistic merits only and for originality, creativity, storytelling, production value, and visualization of Iranian heritage.

In 2011, Farhang Foundation celebrated nowruz in orange County for the first time. the program was so well-received by the community that we decided to celebrate nowruz once again in orange County. this time, we collaborated with the magnificent Pacific Symphony and its American Composers Festival for a multi-day musical celebration at the Segerstrom Center for the arts.

Nowruz - Celebrating Spring and A New Day - Celebrating Nowruz took place from March 22-27, 2012 and featured conductors, Carl St. Clair and Farhad Mechkat, soprano Hila Plitmann, the Shams Ensemble, the Pacific Chorale, and the world premiere of Toward a Season of Peace by composer-in-residence, Richard Danielpour.

While music was at the heart of this extravaganza, one of the highlights of the event was the spectacular Haft-Sîn arrangement on display within the main hall of Segerstrom for all to see and enjoy. though Haft-Sîn is considered a traditional centerpiece of nowruz, this particular Haft-Sîn, coordinated and managed by a dedicated team of volunteers, was anything but traditional.

Farhang Foundation is committed to forging lasting relationships with museums, universities, and organizations such as Pacific Symphony, to ensure that our mission to promote and celebrate Iranian art and culture reaches as many communities and as broad an audience as possible.

Collaborations with uC Irvine Pathology of Iranian traditional Music

Since the inception of Farhang Foundation, one of our organization’s main goals has been to promote the study of Iranian culture in a manner that is both engaging and educational. For this reason, we teamed up with The Samuel Jordan Center for Persian Studies and Culture to sponsor a series of lectures at uC Irvine that would be open and free to the public.

our latest installment of lectures at uC Irvine, took place in the Spring of 2012, when Mohsen Namjoo – a critically acclaimed artist, singer, songwriter, and music scholar – joined us at uC Irvine for Pathology of Iranian Traditional Music in Three Acts, a day-long lecture series discussing the “relation of classical Iranian repertoire to political despotism”, “the nouvelle connection between literary fusion and Iranian music”, and “an overview of independent music in Iran”. It was an insightful exploration of Iranian music, led by one of its brightest stars.

ancient through Modern India and Iran in the longue durée

Farhang Foundation was also a proud co-sponsor of Ancient through Modern India and Iran in the Longue Durée (april 20-22, 2012). Free and open to the public, this conference was organized by UC Irvine and moderated by Professor Alka Patel and Professor Touraj Daryaee. Featuring a diverse and uniquely qualified array of participants, this conference explored the long-standing relationship between India and Iran and the resulting cultural effects in various time periods.

About the Conference:the Indic and Iranian worlds have been in unbroken contact for at least four millennia. the second millennium BCe witnessed the Indo-european speaking peoples’ migrations eastward, forming the initial cultural and linguistic links that would continue into the Common era. these connections were sustained through Kushana and Sasanian imperial expansions (sequentially, first-seventh centuries Ce), while the establishment of Islam in Iran in the seventh century Ce was an impetus behind Zoroastrian migrations to western India well into the medieval period. India and Iran continued in intimate contact through the diplomatic and military engagements between the great early modern empires of the Safavids (1501-1732) and the Mughals (1525-1857), a contact that has reached well into the twentieth century with the Parsis (Zoroastrians) as an integral community of present-day India. the regions encompassed by the modern nation-states of afghanistan and Pakistan have been the bridges facilitating these long-standing connections, constituting the liminal spaces where the boundaries between the Indic and Iranian cultural spheres are far from clear. the interdisciplinary group coming together for this conference is uniquely qualified to bring not only various specialties but also various time periods into conversation, ultimately resulting in a comprehensive examination of Indo-Iranian cultural productions.

now in its 22nd year, the 2012 UCLA Celebration of Iranian Cinema (april 13-29, 2012) at the Billy Wilder theater marked the second year in a row that Farhang Foundation has co-sponsored and helped bring to fruition this prestigious cinema series and the street banners that promote the program throughout Westwood and neighboring areas, while hosting the opening night reception at napa Valley grille.

this year’s program featured a variety of contemporary Iranian films, including Mourning (Iran, 2011), The Mission (uSa/West germany, 1984), Here Without Me (Iran, 2011), Dead End (Iran, 1977), Samad Becomes an Artist (Iran, 1974), Checkpoint (uSa, 1987), Good Bye (Iran, 2011), and This is Not a Film (Iran, 2010). historically, the uCla Celebration of Iranian Cinema has taken place in February, however, due to the scope of the planning that was involved, this year’s program commenced in april, which also helped avoid any possible conflicts with the various nowruz festivities that commonly take place during Spring in los angeles.

Morteza Farshbaf – whose film Mourning was showcased during opening night – joined us in-person from Iran to discuss his work. legendary filmmaker, Parviz Sayyad, also joined us in person and participated in post-screening panel discussions throughout the course of the program.

Consisting of 16 mixed-media prints juxtaposing photography, illustration, and graphic design, the Rostam 2 - The Return series offered visitors Filizadeh’s perspective on consumerism and pop culture in contemporary tehran through his satirical and whimsical reimagining of rostam, the mythical hero of the Shahnameh, the Iranian national epic completed in the year 1010 by poet Ferdowsi. the exhibition will remain on display through december 2, 2012.

generations Council Mixersat Farhang Foundation, we have always valued the role that younger generations of Iranian-americans play in the preservation of our language, arts, and the timeless traditions of our culture. as such, in early 2012 we created Farhang Generations Council, dedicated to creating programming geared towards the young and professional Iranian-american community. our inaugural event, under the direction of the newly established Generations Council, was an exclusive two-night networking engagement designed with young and professional Iranian-americans in mind. Featuring the incomparable Rana Mansour, whose soulful voice and stirring music has made her a favorite among younger generations of Iranian-americans, the first night of this two-part affair took place at Port restaurant in orange County, with the second night taking place at Sadaf restaurant in the San Fernando Valley. guests mingled, networked, and enjoyed tasty Persian appetizers and refreshments, while being introduced to Farhang Foundation, and hopefully inspired to find out how they can preserve their culture and contribute to their community.

Farhang’s Generations Council will continue to create more programs and events with an emphasis on engaging younger generations in our efforts, because we know that it is through the support of Iranian-americans of all ages that our culture and community will truly thrive.

For more information about Farhang Generations Council and to get involved, email us at [email protected].
