Methods in use by theNYPD to monitor Muslimshave come under fire asspy tactics, according to areport released yesterdayby The Associated Press.
The NYPD — with sup-port from the CIA — hasquietly been dispatchingundercover officers tomonitor people shoppingin Islamic bookstores, at-tending sermons atmosques across the cityand even simply hangingout in hookah bars, the APreports.
These officers, nick-named “mosque crawlers,”infiltrate Muslim and Mid-dle Eastern neighbor-hoods, settling in to ob-serve regardless ofwhether they received tipsof terrorist plots there.
The CIA and FBI are pro-hibited from spying onAmerican citizens and somesay the NYPD is infringingon basic civil rights.
“If you’re sending an in-formant into a mosquewhen there is no evidenceof wrongdoing, that’s avery high-risk thing to do,”Valerie Caproni, the FBI’sgeneral counsel, told theAP. She said the FBI neversends agents into mosqueslooking for leads. “You’rerunning right up againstcore constitutional rights. You’re talking about free-dom of religion.”
In 2004, the City Councilpassed a law prohibitingthe NYPD from using reli-
gion or ethnicity “as the de-terminative factor for initi-ating law enforcement ac-tion,” the AP wrote.
Some, however, are call-ing this a case of good po-lice work. Councilman Pe-ter Vallone, head of theCouncil’s Public SafetyCommittee, says cops use a“well-trained officer’s expe-rience” in deciding where
to investigate. After all, headds, a police officer’s deci-sion to monitor a bookstoreor mosque is not illegal.
The Council on Ameri-can-Islamic Relations yes-terday asked the U.S. Jus-tice Department to investi-gate the NYPD’s actions.

We do notwant to spread fear.”
According to the NYPD, it has foiled 13 potentialterrorist plots since 9/11:

The results are in: The C isthe worst train in the sub-way system.
The C can’t seem toshake its bad rap: This is thethird year in a row the C hasbeen deemed the city’soverall worst line, accord-ing to the 14th annual Stateof the Subways report fromthe NYPIRG StraphangersCampaign, a subway riders’advocacy group.
The Straphangers Cam-paign ranks all the trains inthe system based on transitdata supplied by the MTA,such as lateness of trains, breakdowns, crowding andthe ease with which riderscan find a seat.
The C, which runs be-tween Euclid Avenue inBrooklyn and WashingtonHeights in Manhattan, hasthe least amount of day-time service, the reportfound. Riders wait twice aslong for the C as they do
for other trains in the sys-tem, nearly a 10-minutewait between trains com-pared to the system-wideaverage wait of just over 5minutes. Also, cars on theC break down far more of-ten than on other lines, breaking about every54,000 miles compared tothe system-wide average ofevery 170,000 miles, ac-cording to the report.
Which line gives youthe most bang for yourMetroCard? The J/Z is thebest in system due to itsregularity of service.

“I’ve been a diabetic for 48 years, myquality of life has been restored!”
What part of your diabetes would
you like to see ‘go away?’ Are you
plagued by weight gain and food
cravings, high and low blood sugar
levels, mood swings, low energy and
constant fatigue, poor circulation, vi-
sion problems, intermittent pain or
aggravating bouts of brain fog or
memory lapses?
There is good news and it comes
in the form of an effervescent drink
called OPC Factor, which quickly
revitalizes your entire body and
mind.
Better Blood Sugar!
“My doctor was amazed! I don’tknow what you’re doing, but keepdoing it!” Holistic health specialist,
Dr. Charles Berg, says, “Antioxidant
therapy may slow progress of im-
paired glucose tolerance.”
Diabetic Doyle Allen is living
proof. “After only two weeks, my
blood sugar went from 180 to 112
and stayed there!”
“After 2 weeks, my blood sugar went from 180 to 120 and stayed there!”
Breakthrough “Antioxidant”Diabetic Drink Hailed ‘A Miracle’
Naturally improves blood sugar, cholesterol, circulation, energy and more in as little as 2 weeks! The secret is a powerful blend o f

oligomeric proanthocyanadins, or
OPCs including powerhouses like
grape seed, green tea, pine bark, and
red wine extracts, along with lemon
bioflavonoids, resveratrol, and 23
naturally occurring vitamins and en-
zymes.
No more horse pills!
Cell Essential’s OPC Factor™ is
the first 100% organic formula fu-
eled by a revolutionary, high-speed
Isotonic ‘liquid’ delivery system that
mimics the body’s natural pH. This
provides an amazing 97% absorption
rate.
Fast Results
Actual blood scans taken twenty min-
utes apart show how OPC Factor vir-
tually flushes away free radicals,
excess cholesterol crystals and sugar
molecules in the bloodstream.
Excess sugar in your blood causes
oxidation which leads to “slow
sticky blood,” a problem linked to
neuropathy and edema in extremities
as well as kidney damage and even
blindness. OPC Factor greatly im-
proves circulation promoting faster
blood flow; crucial for diabetics.
"OPC Factor has helped lower my
glucose levels. I sleep better and
have more energy and better circula-
tion,” says Charles Leavitt.
NIH Study Proves It!
“I can feel it when I drink it,” says
Ken Murdock. “It gives a lot of en-
ergy.”
A National Institute of Health
funded “double blind” clinical study
published in July, 2008, supports
customer claims about energy. For
diabetics, energy equals better sleep,
moods, and overall balance.
“Studies have found that free rad-
icals produce oxidation that disrupts
insulin. OPC Factor works 20-50
times better than traditional antioxi-
dants against oxidation,” says Dr.
Charles Berg.

That isa lot of tattoos for ol’ TraceCyrus, right? But honestly,I’d probably act out thatbadly if Billy Ray Cyrus weremy dad, too.
Oh, and one more thing:Cyrus apparently has a HotTopic-inspired clothing linecalled “Southern Made,Hollywood Paid.” We dothis to ourselves, America.
Another actorin the familySarah Jessica Parker admitsthat James Wilkie, her 8-year-old son with husbandMatthew Broderick, is itch-ing to get into the familybusiness and become an ac-tor. “I don’t want him to doit until after he goes to col-lege,” she tells Parade mag-azine. “But part of me
thinks maybe it’s better ifhe knows the truth nowabout how hard it is to be aworking actor. I don’tknow if he grasps what ittook to get us here.”
Carey to be on ‘X-Factor’It looks like Mariah Careywill be a part of the U.S.edition of “The X-Factor”
after all, but she won’t besitting behind the judges’table, according to Peoplemagazine. “Mariah is defi-nitely confirmed to be apart of ‘X Factor,’” a sourcesays, explaining that Careywill be a guest of a judge in-stead of a judge herself.“She is confirmed to tapesomething with Simon Cow-ell at the judge’s homes.”
Fox: Marilyn no moreMegan Fox says she’s
removing the massive por-trait of Marilyn Monroe tat-tooed on her forearmbecause it caused “negativeenergy,” according toHollyscoop. “It’s a negativecharacter, as she sufferedfrom personality disordersand was bipolar,” Foxexplains. “I do not want toattract this kind ofnegative energy in my life.I’m removing it.” So doesthis mean her many othertattoos aren’t safe either?“Who knows, maybe I’ll re-move the others too,” shesays. “But the laser hurts.”

In Touch is inbig troubleNow that the new issueof In Touch — the tabloidthat started the Will Smithand Jada Pinkett Smithsplit rumors — is actuallyout, let’s see what it hadto say, shall we?
Honestly, it’s notmuch — just that Willwalked in on Jada withher “HawthoRNe” co-starMarc Anthony. ... Wait! What?!
Yes! They claim Willleft crying after catchingMarc and Jada together intheir family home.Gettin’ jiggy with it,indeed.
For what it’s worth, everyone involved istotally denyingeverything, with the
Smiths even getting theirlegal team to possiblytake action against themagazine.
Smith was probablyjust sobbing from theshock of seeing Anthonynaked. Kidding! Kind of!This is all so crazy, itmust be dreamed up bythe “HawthoRNe” PRteam just to remind all ofus it’s still on the air.
Catfights or noat memorialservice? Taylor Armstrong apparent-ly invited her “Real House-wives of Beverly Hills”co-stars to the private me-morial for her estrangedhusband, Russell, yesterday
in Hollywood,RadarOnline.com reports.“A lot of thought and con-
sideration went intoTaylor’s decision to invitethe entire cast. In the end,Taylor didn’t want toexclude anyone, and eventhough she doesn’t getalong with all of them,Taylor wanted them there. The girls have been verysupportive to her through-out this entire tragedy.
Taylor needs her friendsaround her more thanever,” a source close to thesituation said.
I hope the ladies cankeep it together enoughnot to have a fight at thememorial service. But youknow, that might just beasking a little too muchfrom them.

Jessica Alba:Double-O mom
The actress plays a spy juggling her little ones in‘Spy Kids 4’ Says the real-life mom, ‘There’s a lotof natural comedy in being a first-time parent’
Robert Rodriguez isknown for bouncingbetween pulpygrown-up flicks like
“Sin City” and kid-friendlyfare like the “Spy Kids” se-ries, but actress Jessica Alba, who stars in “Spy Kids 4,”had never seen him take onthe latter before. “Robertdoesn’t change, and hisprocess doesn’t change,”she insists. “But there’s alightheartedness on a setwhere when there’s kidsaround —you’renotblowingthings up.There’sno curs-ing. It’skids’ stuffand toys.”
Whilethis is thethird time Alba has teamedwith Rodriguez, it’s the firsttime they’ve done some-thing family-friendly to-gether. “I talked to Robertabout wanting to do amovie that my daughtercould see,” she says.“There’s a lot of naturalcomedy in being a first-timeparent and just being inday-to-day situations.” Ofcourse, in “Spy Kids 4,” aday-to-day situation couldmean fighting off evilhenchmen and car chaseswhile extremely pregnant,
which Alba does in the film. “It was really a great
comedic set piece,” she says.“Like, what if a woman’s go-ing through contractionswhile trying to save theworld? And, of course, awoman’s going to try to do
it all.”Alba later
found out thatit was her con-
versations withRodriguez that led to muchof her character — a profes-sional spy who puts workon hold for her family. “He
said that my character wasinspired by seeing me try-ing to balance it all — andprobably not doing thegreatest job at it, but tryingat least,” she says, laughing.
One of the ways she andhusband Cash Warren try isby making family the toppriority on the weekends.“That’s when my husbandand I make a concerted ef-fort to not e-mail or textand ... just be completely,
100 percent focused[on our daughters],”she says.
Child stars?
As much as she enjoysbeing an actress, Alba’spretty firm about notwanting her girls to getinto the business too soon.
“I was a child actor, and itworked for me given thecircumstances I was in, butI’m lucky enough to givemy daughter — and mysecond baby — a com-
pletely different life andeducational opportunitythan I ever had,” she says.“When they’re done withcollege, if they want to getinto the arts that’s fine. ButI wouldn’t encourage themto work in this type of en-vironment. I reallywouldn’t.”

Sip in style at new JbirdThe Theater District doesn’t boast as many cocktaillounges as, say, downtown. (Really, where on earthdoes?) But the opening of Jbird, inside of XVI (251 W.48th St.), will help that balance. What if you want to impressher? I would start with crudowith nice sea salt. Or ce-viche with a little bit ofspice. It is a very simple, light dish, but to executeit well takes a lot ofknowledge.

The nights you give upand grab Chipotle in apostwork fog are, likely, the nights you could really
use a glass of wine. But what can you
pair with fastfood? Well,surprisingly,
quite a bit, according toGregory Dal Piaz, editor inchief of wine websiteSnooth.com.
“Every so often you eatat McDonald’s — the kidswant it or something andit’s the easiest thing to do— and there’s no reasonyou can’t have a decentglass of wine with it,” hesays. “And because fastfood is not that intenselyflavored, it seems to gowell with wines that canstand up to the acidity inthe food.”
Fried chicken“With fried chicken, chicken nuggets orfried chickensandwiches, toovercome the greasi-ness, you’re definitelylooking for somethingcrispy and fruity andlightweight, maybe aPinot Grigio or un-oaked Chardonnay,”says Dal Piaz. But therules change once ba-con is involved, suchas with McDonald’sChicken BLT: “All theoaky, smoky stuff goesgreat with the bacon.”
BurgersFor plainer, meatyburgers, Dal Piaz rec-ommends simple redswith big flavors, suchas a Grenache blendor a Cotes du Rhone. But, he points out, popular burgers suchas the Whopper andBig Mac are reallymore like sandwiches, with just as many toppings and saucesto consider as themeat. “A Chardonnayactually works wellwith these burgers,”he says. “They have a grilled smoky flavor, and Chardonnayshave a creamy, oakytaste that mirrors it,and there are no tan-nins to fight the burg-er.”
MexicanWhen it comes toChipotle, winepairings aren’t asmuch of a stretch —Dal Piaz actuallyenjoyed finding match-es for the chain’s veg-gie burrito. “The foodjust has a lot more go-ing on. There are a lotof things you can playoff of. When you take asecond bite, it’s not al-ways identical.”
For Chipotle andother spicy fast fare, herecommends a winethat’s low in tanninswith some sweetnessand enough acidity tofight off the oils, suchas Riesling or Lambrus-co. “Bubbles and spiceare always a lot of fun,”he adds.
Would youlike winewith that?
Plenty of fast foods work just fine with a glass of vino Expert pairing picks, from nuggets to burritos
If you like it, drink it. “Ultimately, it’s all about what you like,”advises Dal Piaz. “You can’t blindly followsome dude on the Internet.”

After one day and onenight, Juliana Hat-field is done withvacation. Apparent-
ly, the one day off is Hat-field’s idea of a summerholiday.
“I went to Martha’s Vine-yard recently. I was sort ofplanning on being there forthree days,” says the Boston-based alt-pop singer-song-writer. “But I had to comehome after 24 hours, be-cause I couldn’t handle anymore than 24 hours of re-laxation. But I really, reallyenjoyed the 24 hours of re-laxation. I just didn’t wantany more.”
Hatfield, whose candidmemoir “When I Grow Up”was published in 2008, ad-mits that instead of allow-ing stress to control her as itdid when she was younger, she now uses it as fuel. Shecelebrates the release of hernew album, “There’s Al-
ways Another Girl” nextweek.
“I put a lot of pressure onmyself, and I definitely haveanxiety about getting stuffdone, about getting songswritten,” she says. “I guess Ikind of thrive on anxiety, Ineed it. If I’m not constantlyproducing work then I’llseize up and become a logon my couch, doing noth-ing. Inertia is a powerfulforce, and I can get suckedinto black holes of doingnothing for a long time. Itry not to let that happen.”
‘Another Girl,’ andanother workday
Juliana Hatfield on why she doesn’t take too muchtime off Yes, she considers one day off too much time
Plenty ofalbums (and rest)Even Hatfield admitsthat doing nothing cansometimes be quite anattractive way to spendyour time, especiallyfor someone who hasbeen hard at it as a pro-fessional musician for, astoundingly, 25 years.“I do allow myself plen-ty of rest. I always saythat I work hard and Irest hard. I can be real-ly lazy and I look backon all the albums I’vemade and say, ‘Well, Ideserve a day of doingnothing. I’m going todo nothing today andenjoy it.’”
Financial collapse, and now an earth-quake? Is this reallyhappening? Not sur-
prisingly, a growing sectorof the population feels that, yes, the apocalypse is wellon the way — and they’retaking every precaution tobe ready for it.
Take, for example, sur-vivalist Dr. Stirling Silver-man (this is his pen name— he will not give us hisreal name for security rea-sons), who is featured inthe TLC special, “Livin’ forthe Apocalypse.” Since the1980s, Silverman has beenstockpiling food, water, weaponry, silver — youname it — in an undis-closed location in Missouriin preparation for govern-ment or environmentalfailure.
“In the late ’80s … I be-came aware that the gov-ernment was just not goingto be prepared for social se-curity because they werespending the money thatwe were paying in,” he says.“Anybody who can do themath understands that the
baby boomers are a largegroup of people. … You’regoing to have less peoplepaying into the system andthen you’re going to haveall these baby boomers thatare expecting to get their re-tirement money from socialsecurity. I think it’s crimi-nally negligent that ourpoliticians did not foreseethis thing coming.”
Expecting the possibili-ties of “social unrest, eco-nomic collapse and hyper-inflation,” Silverman begancollecting silver, which maybe handy to have if the dol-lar collapses completely.
Think that sounds ex-treme? Consider the rea-sons why you’re readingthis article right now, orwhy a show called “Livin’for the Apocalypse” wasmade in the first place.
“I think just about every-body out there senses thatwe’re on the verge of some-thing really bad and a lot ofpeople don’t understandwhat it is,” says Silverman.“This [TLC] show is one re-flection of that. That’s notsomething that would hap-pen 10 years ago. It was avery obscure topic in the’80s when I started, but it’sbecoming mainstream.”

apocalypse?Just in time for this week’s earthquake, the TLC special ‘Livin’ for theApocalypse’ captures the lives of survivalists preparing for disaster
Dr. StirlingSilverman’s tipsfor apocalypsepreparedness:What to stockpilefirst and why
1. Water “Have some bottled water orlarger containers of water instorage. Also: water filters.Say you have to get water outof a lake — you don’t want touse that for drinking. Youmight also want to makepreparations forcollecting rainwater.”
2. Food storage “You should have atleast enough athome to last — de-pending on whatyour philosophy is— a few weeks. Some people, like
me, have at least a year’ssupply of food.”
3. Utilities “Think about the thingsthat you get from thelocal government thatyou need — like utili-ties, electricity. The firstthings you want to takecare of are the thingsyou need the most.”
COURTESY OF TLC
Does Silverman thinkthere’s any hope forurbanites to survive?“No, I really don’t. Just beingfrank with you. Even if youare a survivalist and you put alot of stuff away, do you reallywant to be in a densely popu-lated area with thousands ofpeople who haven’t
prepared? They’re going tobe hungry and they’re not go-ing to hesitate to try to takeyour stuff. I think that’s anoth-er reason why you need to bearmed. But even in the city, Idon’t think you could bearmed enough to fight off thepotential hoards. So no, Idon’t really hold out muchhope for people in the city.”

The citation of Goebbelsin support of the Tea Par-ty is most appropriateand ironic. Do you knowwhat the Nazis did? Samsung has revealed aslew of new Android Gin-gerbread smartphones, allnamed under the new nam-ing scheme which shouldmake it easier to discernwhich phone does what bylooking at the name alone.
Now, when you hearabout a Samsung Galaxyphone, this is what the let-ters following “Galaxy” inthe name mean: S means“Super Smart” and denotesa flagship device, while Rstands for “Royal” or “Re-fined” and denotes a premi-um model, just below the Sclass. W stands for “Won-der,” which translates to ahigh-quality, midlevel de-vice; M means “Magical”and denotes a mid- to low-level smartphone, while Ystands for “Young,” mean-ing an entry-level device.
Additionally, Pro indi-cates the device includes aphysical QWERTY key-board, Plus means the de-vice is an upgrade from anexisting model, while LTEmeans that the device sup-
ports Long-Term Evolutionstandard, which enablesvery fast data transfer.
This makes our job easi-er. If we tell you that Sam-sung has released four newAndroid smartphones —Galaxy W, Galaxy M Pro,Galaxy Y and Galaxy Y Pro— you already know whatthat means, right?
We’ll add some details, though: The Galaxy Wsports a respectable 1.4 GHzprocessor, HSDPA connec-tivity and a 3.7 touchscreen. Samsung hasn’t re-vealed the precise specs ofthe other three devices, ex-cept a couple of tidbits hereand there.

Starbuckstops Facebooklogins forrestaurants Starbucks is the eatery Facebook users check in tomost, according to a reportfrom the social-networkinggiant. With about 17,000 lo-cations, Starbucks’ ubiquityno doubt works in its favor;but the list also shows thatsmaller players can upsetindustry titans. Case inpoint: Buffalo Wild Wings, which has around 700 out-lets, was higher on the listthan McDonald’s and its32,000 or so globallocations. The list in full:
It seems that every trainingcamp there is one team thatexperiences great loss be-fore the regular season even
begins. Unfortunately
for the Giants, they seem tohave drawn
the short end of that stick. Following Monday
night’s win over the Bears— a game that was marredby three season-ending in-juries — the Giants spentmost of practice talkingabout how guys need tostep up. They will need toget out of the malaisequickly with the crosstownrival Jets on the horizonSaturday.
Defensive end JustinTuck said the bright side isthat unknown players havethe opportunity to becomehousehold names if they
successfully fill the voids. “It’s football. Obviously
it’s unfortunate to happenbut like I always say, guyshave to step up,” Tuck said.“New guys have opportuni-ties now and it gives guysmore of a chance to show-case their football talents.”
Tuck said he won’t allowfor his team to feel sorry foritself.
“We can’t sit here andpity ourselves because theteams we’re playing thisyear won’t,” Tuck said.“We’ve got to move for-ward. Does it hurt? Ab-solutely, but it’s football.Every team has injuries andevery team has people thatgo down. But it’s the teamsthat bounce back from itand you see in the playoffsthat still compete for cham-pionships every year.”
TONY WILLIAMS
For Plaxico Burress, Satur-day night’s preseason gameagainst his old teammates isjust another game. And ifyou believe that, Bernie
Madoff has some in-vestment advicefor you.
“There’s noth-ing extra, no added
incentive, juice or whateveryou call it,” Burress said.“I’m more concerned aboutme going out, playing bet-ter, getting better.”
Having made his Jets de-but this past weekend, Bur-ress is turning his attentiontowards the Giants. Burresswent from a promising re-ceiver to a bona fide starwith the Giants during fourseasons.
Then, he notoriouslywent from hero to zero inNovember 2008 when heaccidentally shot himself ina New York City nightclub.
Saturday night repre-sents his second game sincethe shooting, and as much
as he tries to paint this aspurely about football, it’sanything but just a game.
After getting a warm re-ception from the Jets’ homecrowd on Sunday, it’s any-one’s guess how Giants fans
will react.“I’m sure it will be excit-
ing for him to come backout there,” head coach RexRyan said. “It’ll be interest-ing to see the fans’ reactionto him, things like that.”
“It’s going to be fun,”Burress said. “It will defi-nitely be something spe-cial.”

Nova gettinginto agroove
Russell Martin knew thepotential Ivan Nova’s rightarm possessed. Now heknows more about themakeup of the pitcherwho is making astrong case to be theNo. 2 starter for theYankees.
“I knew that he hada good arm,” Martin toldMetro. “He had a lot of po-tential. I didn’t really knowmuch about him. I didn’t
know how he was as a per-son, but he’s classy guyonce you get to knowhim.”
The first time Martinsaw that potential wasduring spring train-ing. He caught six no-
hit innings on March17 against the Orioles and
discovered that Nova pos-sessed a slider that couldbe equally as effective asthe fastball and curveball
he had heard about uponjoining the Yankees.
“After that I knew,” Mar-tin said. “You can showglimpses of things, it’s justa matter of being moreconsistent and that’s whathappens when you’re
young. You’re searchingfor that consistency and itseems like he’s found it.”
He is 9-0 in his last 10starts with a 3.48 ERA andis the first Yankee rookiestarting pitcher to winnine straight decisionssince Whitey Ford 61 yearsago. His next win willmark the most by a Yankeerookie starting pitchersince Doc Medich was 14-9in 1973. LARRY FLEISHER
