Progress presentation of my graduation.

Graduation theme is “Electrical and thermal energy balance analysis for an off-grid campground site”. The graduation research is performed at the Eindhoven University of Technology in the research group of prof.dr.ir Jan Hensen. Each month all the graduate students have to present their progress of the last month.

Background

• Research is a part of Annex 54 from the IEA− Integration of Micro-Generation and Related Energy Technologies in Buildings”

• The Netherlands, Eindhoven participates in 54 subtask B− Use simulations to develop an extensive library of performance studies and

synthesis techniques to identify generic performance trends and “rules of thumb” regarding the appropriate deployment of micro-generation technologies.

Research question

• “How to develop a design concept which ensures the comfort of the occupants, and has an optimized (system) performance of an energy system with 100% renewable micro-generation technologies which has to satisfy the electrical and thermal energy demand, for an off-grid campground at Texel, in the Netherlands?”

Priority steps

• Reducing the CO2 emissions

• Direct use of the generated renewable energy• Use the renewable energy source which has the

most energy contribution throughout the year regarding the demand profile

Expected results

• Predefined outcomes from the IEA Annex 54− Compilation of case studies of the introduction of micro generation technologies− Country-specific studies on the performance of a range of micro-generation systems.− Studies of the viability of micro-generation systems in different operational contexts and of the

impacts of micro-generation on the wider community and the potential benefits, in particular for the electricity network.

− Performance assessment methodologies.− Component models and their implementation in building simulation tools.− An update on occupant related DHW and electric load profiles.

Expected results

• Extra expected outcomes− An DHW and electrical energy demand profile− Building / facility specific occupancy and demand Profile− Energy generation per micro-generation technology profile− A way to integrate the systems and the corresponding set points− A study to the best applicable micro-generation technology regarding the demand profile of the

campground− A study to the best applicable micro-generation technology mix regarding the demand profile of

the campground.− Concept study with a demonstration model in TRNSYS

Sub question

• How to ensure the comfort, in terms of the availability of domestic hot water, electricity and a desirable indoor temperature for an off grid campground?

• Sources used;• Central Bureau of Statistics of the Netherlands (CBS)• Knowledge Institute for the installation technology sector (ISSO)• Agency of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation (Agentschap NL)• Association of water companies in the Netherlands (VEWIN)

• Where information was missing experience and common sense is used.
