About:

Corey studied architecture at the University of Colorado, Boulder. During his last year of undergraduate studies he joined a Denver-based architectural firm and quickly moved into a position as senior associate designer and managed the firm’s satellite office in Big Sky Montana. Co-rey has enjoyed success as a professional athlete, which has afforded him international travel through competition. He returned to the profession as an associate AIA, designer for open studio | architecture in Denver CO. Corey is currently pursuing his Master of Architecture degree from the University of Washington, Seattle.

Wassily Kandinsky (16 December 1866 - 13 December 1944) was a Russian painter, printmaker and art theorist. One of the most famous 20th-century artists, he is credited with painting the first modern abstract works. Geometric abstract art is a form of abstract art based on the use of geometric forms sometimes, though not always, placed in non-illusionistic space.

Ex_1

A sculpture is produced by extruding lines from Wassily Kandinsky 1923 geometric abstract art piece Black and Violet. Free of pro-gram, this form is not confined to XYZ. Rather, it fosters a limit-less interpretation of the spatial composition between geometric forms placed in non-illusionistic space.

The proposal is firmly grounded in a solitary notion that draws succinct parallels between psyche and the built environment. The concept is born through a dialect which considers the opposing behavior inherent in a particular state of being, in this case static and dynamic.

Page 11: 2011 Undergraduate Architecture Portfolio

Our site lives off the infrastructural grid plan; it breaks the formality of the city and thus, is experienced as a unique and informal space. Allowing a working model to define space, yet remain abstract to the confines of conditioned and unconditioned atmosphere, which synchronizes the built environment seam-lessly with nature.

The ontology of this design can be broadly understood to contain characteristics of two principal states of be-ing; two states that are joined tectonically and essentially evolve from one another. They are states of serenity and expression. At this moment we can draw obvious paral-lels with both anatomy and sport. Sport is typically a monitored physical exertion of energy built to a climax. It is expressed as the fundamental assembly of the design, through curvilinear volumes and contradictory materials. And it is in the unity, rigor, and linear formality, exhibited in the orthogonal forms, that we experience serenity.

Beyond the studio, this proj-ect was proposed for public consideration by the Boulder, Colorado City Council, for what would have been the first Olympic-caliber cycling velodrome to incorporate cancer rehabilitation facilities. Programmatically, The Perfor-mance Center/Velodrome was designed connecting world-class athletes and re-covering patients in an inspi-rational environment for heal-ing and transcending physical limits.

Ex_1 Global Connection:Various models made from salvaged studio scrapes create a dialogue of concep-tual methods for generating, collecting, and storing energy. The concept emerged as self-contained, self-generating machines at various scales, which generate elec-tricity solely utilizing the infrastructure and occupants of the public building.

[study model; sketch to form]

Embracing innovation we now begin to harmonize our design with nature. Botany, or plant science, is a subsid-iary of biology that involves the sci-entific study of plant life, which lends us the inspiration necessary to con-ceive form. With our eyes closed and pencils in hand, this notion was in-troduced and we began sketching blindly the form which we envisioned, relating building to memories of site.

Page 17: 2011 Undergraduate Architecture Portfolio

Architecture derived from botany produced a self-contained dwelling, encouraged to harmo-nize seamlessly within the cycle of nature. Ex-tracting elements from the earth, elevating them towards the sun, and converting energy for future use, are design strategies facilitating a connection to nature. Materials thin as the structure emerges from the earth creating a sense of space as well as rejuvenating a once dilapidated area.

A graphic study and the resultant model of a project that ab-stractly interprets the transformation of a suppressed form from vertical to horizontal. Through the process of unfolding an exist-ing condition to create new opportunity, we explore two scales; a macro scale (landscape) which conceptually expressed the notion of change from built to unbuilt environment and a micro scale (tec-tonic) which discusses the fundamentals of physical change through materiality and operable mechanics facilitating movement.

The catalyst for movement is a stiff and rig-id wire that guides a plane from one space to another. As the elements unfold, the wire denotes the line of travel as if leaving a trace.

Utilizing wood as a material is a suggestion of nature and its manipulation over time, whereas the metal mechanics of the hinge suggest alteration by society.

Page 21: 2011 Undergraduate Architecture Portfolio

Layers of intrinsic infrastructure suggest a nodal point within the cities lattice that has been created over time. It can be understood that this node has several means of transportation that are not being utilized effectively by the people in the area. Thus, the proposal of a rail platform to service the existing mass transit light rail system. The initial proposal responded primarily to pedestrian migration, circulation, and congregation by overlaying images of information gathered from the site.

Spatial composition is explored by giving form to information gathered on site. Defining how ambulation will transition people amongst each mode. More specifically, connecting vehicle transportation to the overhead light rail system, this in turn reveals the relationship between each mode of transportation.

Passing through the site systematically as if daunting all other modes of transportation, a railroad track lends evidence to the history and func-tion of the site. A highway grid running parallel moves people to and from the city which ebbs and flows like a rivers volume as the day pro-gresses. The overhead light rail system suggests the need for additional infrastructure by overlapping the various movements below.

Railroad, Vehicle, and Light Rail are understood through the dialect of the following analogue sketch. Lines were extrapolated from the spatial composition, defining function by indentifying their connection to the city, and interaction amongst other modes. In plan view, we experience vehicle and the movement out of the city, traversing into a perspective view where we are met by the intersection of railroad and light rail at a central node.
