Steve HASKIN is an award-winning Turf writer renowned for his Kentucky Derby commentary. He has been a senior correspondent at The Blood-Horse since 1998. When he decided earlier in the year to list the top 60 or 70 3-year-olds in alphabetical order, as sort of a guide leading up to his “Derby Dozen” and “Derby Trail” columns featured in the magazine and on BloodHorse.com, he felt assigning a rating to each horse would be more interesting. He used a scale of 1-10, based on several factors, including performance, pedi-gree, and how impressive the horses’ races looked visually.

Introduction GlossarySelecting the Kentucky Derby winner from a field of 18 or 20 is
hard enough; figuring out which horses are likely to make it to the Triple Crown trail is even more daunting. Even Thoroughbred enthu-siasts who carefully follow juvenile racing will find that springtime introduces a slew of new potential runners. Blood-Horse Publications’ “Triple Crown Prospects” special report is an early-season guide to the most promising sophomores that are likely to have an impact in the Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes.
The backbone of this report is an introduction to 40 top 3-year-olds that appear to be pointed toward one of the American classic races. Steve Haskin of “Derby Dozen” and “Hangin’ with Haskin” fame re-views each contender’s chances and assigns his own 1 to 10 rating—where 10 is Steve’s prediction that the horse not only will run but also be in contention down the stretch.
Jason Shandler, author of “Triple Crown Talk”—also known for his no-nonsense persona on “That Handicapping Show”—serves as a counterpoint to Steve. Jason provides his own rating and commentary on each sophomore runner.
Profile pages include a wealth of data. Most of the statistics are familiar, but a short review might be helpful. The statistical box in-cludes graded earnings, which become important as many colts and fillies vie for limited spots in the Derby starting gates. The Experi-mental Free Handicap is explained in detail in the glossary in right column on this page. The pedigree box includes official bloodlines information and foal data provided by The Jockey Club Information Systems’ equineline.com reports service, while a BRISnet.com past-performances chart (“PPs”) summarizes the subject horse’s race ca-reer to date.
Other contenders for the Triple Crown are included in shorter sta-tistical overviews starting on page 46. Shown in this section are race records and best level won (GSW is a graded stakes win, GSP is graded stakes-placed, SW is a stakes win, and SP is stakes-placed), the aver-age winning distance (AWD) and the longest distance the horse has won, and the Dosage profile, which is also explained in the glossary. One-page reviews of past winners of the Derby, Preakness, and Bel-mont provide some perspective, and brief histories of the host tracks—Churchill Downs, Pimlico, and Belmont Park—round out the Triple Crown preview.
Dosage: A technique for classifying Thoroughbred pedigrees by type based on aptitudinal characteristics inherited from se-lected sires, called “chefs-de-race.” The degree of inheritance attributed to each of these “chefs” was essentially constant in all pedigrees, the absolute value (or Dosage figure) varying from sire to sire. “Chefs,” chosen on the basis of their observable pre-potence for type, are assigned to one or two of five aptitudinal groups (Brilliant, Intermediate, Classic, Solid, and Professional) covering the spectrum (from left to right as you read the dosage profile) of speed to endurance. The assignments are made to reflect the traits that these stallions predictably and consistently transmit to their offspring. Only one winner of the Kentucky Derby since 1940 (Strike the Gold), and only three winners of the Belmont Stakes over the same time frame (Damascus, Con-quistador Cielo, Creme Fraiche) have had a DI above 4.00. This is in direct contrast to stakes winners in general, of which about one-quarter to one-third have a DI greater than 4.00 and for which the average DI is slightly above 4.00.
Experimental Free Handicap: The Experimental Free Handi-cap, published annually by The Jockey Club since 1935, is a weight-based assessment of the previous year’s leading 2-year-olds, with the weights compiled for a hypothetical race at 11⁄16 miles on dirt. This year’s weighting committee of racing sec-retaries was composed of Ben Huffman of Churchill Downs, P.J. Campo of the New York Racing Association, and Thomas S. Robbins of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. The committee weighted a total of 99 males and 92 fillies. Eligible for weighting were all 2-year-olds of 2010 that finished among the top four in graded or listed stakes races run in the continental United States. Listed stakes in 2010 were those with a value of $75,000 or more available to all starters, and no restrictions other than age or sex. The 128 pounds assigned to Uncle Mo for the 2011 Experimental Free Handicap is two pounds above the standard impost for top Experimental colts, including last year’s co-high weights Lookin At Lucky and Vale of York. It is the highest assignment since Favorite Trick received 128 pounds in 1997.
Furlong: one-eighth of a mileTrueNicks: Compatibility of stallions from one male line
with mares from other sire lines has shaped the breed since the Eclipse/Herod cross of the late 18th century. Called nicks, these successful crosses have made a profound impact on the develop-ment of the Thoroughbred. TrueNicks is a nick rating that uti-lizes the database of The Jockey Club —the world’s most com-plete records of Thoroughbreds and their performance—to pro-duce a sophisticated rating based on all foals for a given cross. A TrueNicks rating is derived from two statistical elements: a Sire Improvement Index (SII) and a Broodmare Sire Improvement Index (BSII). Both of them compare the percentage of progeny stakes winners to starters. An SII of 2.0 indicates the sire/sire line has twice the percentage of stakes winners out of mares by the broodmare sire/sire line as he does when bred to all other mares. A BSII of 3.0 indicates the percentage of stakes winners out of a stallion’s daughters when bred to the chosen sire/sire line is 3.0 times as high as the percentage of stakes winners produced by the same mares when bred to all other studs. The TrueNicks rating is then calculated by multiplying the SII by the BSII, effec-tively recognizing the real opportunity and performance of the given cross. A test group of more than 100,000 horses of racing age revealed the following: While only 13% of the entire Thor-oughbred population earn “A” ratings (A to A++), 37% of the stakes winners rate as “A’s;” and horses rated “B” or better (B to A++) represent just 30% of the entire population, yet 3 out of 4 (77%) stakes winners rate “B” or better.

W ith the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) merely days away, it’s time to look at the field by their TrueNicks ratings. Of the top
20 contenders, 13 (65%) are rated A++; 15 (75%) were A or above; 18 (90%) were B or higher. Of the remaining two, one has a C rating and one has no rating, which means not enough crosses have been tried to generate a rating. Also included below are the Dosage Indexes for all the contenders.

This speedy son of Unbridled’s Song looked the part breaking his maiden by 11⁄2 lengths in 1:203⁄5 in his second career start. Runner-up Chico d’Oro, another promising colt, finished 81⁄2 lengths ahead of the third horse. He obviously has catching up to do, but the raw talent certainly is there.

Was not a well-kept secret when he broke his maiden on Feb. 12, as he went off at 1-2 and pro-ceeded to wire the field in near track-record time for seven furlongs. Raw speed is there, which is half the battle, but time is not on his side. Would have to be a freak to be ready for Derby. I could see Preakness more.

This well-bred son of Distorted Humor stamped himself as a good horse with a powerful maiden victory at Remington Park, winning by seven. The big question was how he would do at a larger venue and he answered that question with a head score over the highly promising Elite Alex in an Oaklawn allowance test. He has the pedigree and the running style and could be a major factor.

His jockey Joel Rosario’s eyes must have lit up in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes when he saw 1-5 favorite Tapizar coming apart at the seams in front of him. With blinkers added, the son of Indian Charlie was in perfect position to pounce on Tapizar, then have enough left to hold off the consistent Riveting Reason to win by a nose. He seems to be improving with every start for Eoin Harty. Only negative was :132⁄5 final eighth and :382⁄5 final three-eighths on lightning-fast track.

He’s a big, handsome, long-striding colt who had a few issues resolved over the winter. Trainer Steve Asmussen won’t rush him and likely will wait until the San Felipe Stakes for his 3-year-old debut. He has plenty of 2-year-old foundation and stakes experience and loves Churchill Downs. Distance will not be a problem. He just needs to come back with better speed figures. But those resolved issues should allow him to boost those figures considerably.

This could be trainer Bob Baffert’s sleeper if he can keep him together; he’s not a big, robust horse. He showed he likes to battle when he out-gamed the hard-knocking Riveting Reason in a one-mile allowance race. Riveting Reason came back to be beaten a nose in the Robert. B. Lewis. Baffert has liked him from the start and thinks he can be a two-turn horse. Was expecting to see him in Robert B. Lewis but wasn’t quite ready. Could be a late-bloomer; if not the Derby, maybe the Preakness. Never discount a horse Baffert likes.

Giving him one more chance after he broke slowly in the Sam Davis and dropped back to last, then had to close into a pokey 1:13 for the six furlongs. Very professional two-turn maiden win on Feb. 11; had every reason to quit after being caught be-tween horses and stuck on the inside. Outstand-ing classic pedigree. Time is the problem here; everything has to go right to make the Derby. One to watch for Preakness and/or Belmont.

Undefeated half brother to last year’s Derby winner Super Saver, he totally dominated the Sam F. Davis Stakes, tracking a 53-1 longshot and then breaking the race wide open to win by four. As good as he looked, the runner-up was coming out of starter allowance races and ran for a $16,000 claiming tag last year. One big plus was that he was much more professional than last time out.

Normally after beating a soft field like he did in Sam F. Davis I wouldn’t be overly impressed. But you get the feeling he would have beaten just about any other 3-year-old that day. Low Beyer means nothing to me; he’s a top colt and a major Derby contender if he stays sound.

He beat a less-than-average group in the Smarty Jones Stakes, but won by 23⁄ lengths fol-lowing a terrible effort in a listed stakes at Rem-ington Park. Bill O’Reilly’s favorite horse stunned every-one with his spectacular maiden victory at Santa Anita, in which he won by 81⁄ lengths in an un-heard of 1:06 ⁄5 for six furlongs. Blazing track or not, that is incredible time for a maiden 2-year-old. The seven-furlong San Vicente will tell us where he goes from there. Right now the Derby looks like a stretch unless he can harness some of that speed.

Baffert is as good as any trainer out there, but if this horse wins the Derby, he is a true racing god. Lightning fast colt, but how do your harness that speed?

This son of Bellamy Road could be a real sleeper for Graham Motion, winning his last three starts, including a last-to-first victory in the Whirlaway Stakes, in which he still showed some signs of greenness. He has the pedigree and the running style and should be tough in the big Aqueduct stakes.

Interesting colt by Bellamy Road. Can he fin-ish what his daddy couldn’t six years ago? Has a nice turn of foot, seems like he is game, and wants more distance. No major faults that I can see. Will be watching to see where he winds up. Might wind up being Uncle Mo’s toughest test in Wood Memorial.

Everything is there—pedigree (by Bernardini, out of a strong Darby Dan female family), talent (won his last three starts, including the Remsen and Nashua Stakes), looks, and he’s trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, who finally got off the classic schneid last year with Drosselmeyer. He’s been working steadily at Payson Park for the Fountain of Youth and should be plenty fit.

Mott says this is his best Derby prospect ever. Pedigree and 2-year-old season say he might be right. Will be tested against many of the best in Fountain of Youth and Florida Derby, so we’ll have a good idea how talented he is by May 7. Remem-ber, Mott has more wins at Churchill than anyone in history. Have the Derby gods finally called?

He has the potential to be one of the ones, and although his BC Juvenile romp was an amazing performance, displaying push-button accelera-

Only special horses can do that. Throw in his ca-1⁄ -length procession in 1:091⁄5 at

Ran three of the most impressive juvenile races in history, both visually and on speed numbers. Has a great mind to go with it, and his pedigree is good enough. Will he get better? He doesn’t have to. Just needs to run back to those races and he is the most likely Derby winner. He’s the fastest horse in this crop…by a large margin.

He took advantage of a perfect trip by com-ing through on the inside to nail the pace-setting Pants On Fire in the Lecomte Stakes right on the wire. The son of Lemon Drop Kid has finished in the money in all four of his starts and could give trainer Neil Howard a solid one-two punch along with Machen. Howard also has Prime Cut on the Derby trail.

Was a fan of his even before he broke his maiden; sharp worker and good turn of foot. He proved the latter with that rallying, rail-skimming win in Lecomte. Looking forward to seeing him in Louisiana Derby. Might be a notch below Florida’s best.

Son of Harlan’s Holiday, out of a Gone West mare, ran huge thirds in the Breeders’ Futurity and BC Juvenile Turf after breaking his maiden at Arlington Park. Only question now is how he’ll take to the dirt. He’s never even worked on it and hasn’t been on any work tab since the Breeders’ /Cup. Two three-furlong breezes at Fair Grounds.

In pre-automobile 1875 the entire United States was “horse country.” But the roll-
ing hills and ample bluegrass of Kentucky certainly presented an ideal venue to raise and race horses, as evidenced by the nascent breeding industry in the Commonwealth’s countryside and four racetracks operating in the city of Louisville before the turn of the century.
Little did Col. M. Lewis Clark, grandson of William Clark of Lewis & Clark fame, know that his new racetrack in the city’s South End with its inaugural Kentucky Derby would become a national landmark with a world-renowned sporting event that would one day eclipse the fame of the Epsom Derby after which it was fashioned.
But with Aristides’ victory over 14 other 3-year-olds in May 1875, born was a legend-ary racetrack and America’s longest contin-uously running sporting event. It just took a while for anyone outside of Louisville to take note. It was eight years before the track was officially named “Churchill Downs,” another 20 years before Twin Spires topped a new grand-stand, 28 years before the racetrack became profitable, and 50 years be-fore the Derby earned its “Run for the Roses” moniker.
Churchill Downs racetrack was organized as a Kentucky corpora-tion in 1928 and officially became known as Churchill Downs Inc. in 1942.
Col. Matt Winn — “Mr. Derby”
Enter Matt Winn, who led a syn-dicate that took the reins of the struggling facility in 1902 and even-tually brought the racetrack and its signature race to a level of interna-tional acclaim virtually unmatched by any other U.S. sporting event. Winn was an innovator, promoter, and champion of the sport who is credited with making the Kentucky Derby what it is today.
During Winn’s tenure Churchill Downs racetrack hosted state fairs at the facility, locomotive colli-sions in the infield, and auto races on the racetrack. Even the first re-corded flight in Kentucky is tied to Churchill Downs, when pilot Glenn Curtiss, founder of Curtiss-Wright Aviation, shipped a plane in by train, assembled it at the track and took off from the infield. Winn is also credited with bringing pari-mutuel machines to the racetrack in 1908, Derby radio broadcasts in 1925, and the military—Sherman tanks and all— to the infield’s “Camp Winn” in 1942. His efforts
helped draw tens of thousands, including many celebrities, to Churchill Downs each first Saturday in May. Fittingly, Winn’s final Derby in 1949 was the first Kentucky Derby to be televised, extending the opportunity to witness the “Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” to every family with a television set.
In retrospect, his efforts to imprint Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby on the na-tional consciousness gave the company some-thing no other racetrack could have: an iden-tity and event as big as the sport itself. In the four decades that followed, the Company con-tinued to expand and modernize its facility to accommodate the throngs attending the Ken-tucky Derby and its sister race, the Kentucky Oaks. In doing so, the company built upon its unique brand, which it would later leverage to become a leading provider of Thoroughbred racing across the nation.

Historic Pimlico Race Course, home of the Preakness Stakes, first opened its doors
on Oct. 25, 1870, making it the second-old-est racetrack in the nation behind Saratoga, which debuted in 1864 in upstate New York. Engineered by Gen. John Ellicott, Pimlico has played host to racing icons for over a century, where Baltimoreans have seen the likes of legendary horses such as Man o’ War, Sir Barton, Seabiscuit, War Admi-ral, Citation, Secretariat, and Cigar thunder down the stretch in thrilling and memorable competition.
Constructed on 70 acres west of the Jones Falls, after Maryland’s Governor at the time, Oden Bowie, suggested during a 1868 din-ner party in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., that he and his prominent racing friends have a race in two years for their horses that were year-lings at the time. The winner would have to host the losers for dinner. Both Saratoga and the American Jockey Club made bids for the event, but Gov. Bowie pledged to build a model racetrack in his home state if the race were to be run in Baltimore. Thus, Pim-lico was built. The Maryland Jockey Club purchased the land for $23,500 and built the racetrack for $25,000.
“Pimlico” was the name given the area by English settlers in Colonial times. The colo-nists hailed from an area near London, and harbored memories of a famous landmark “Olde Ben Pimlico’s Tavern.”
The racetrack soon became affectionately known as “Old Hilltop,” after a small rise in the infield that became a favorite gather-ing place for trainers and race enthusiasts to view the contestants close-up and cheer on their favorites. The infield was always a fashionable rendezvous, where in days gone by the four-in-hands, “spikes,” tandems, pairs, and singles were parked and lively guests congregated between the races for a champagne lunch. Over 60,000 revelers crowd additional areas of the infield to cel-ebrate Preakness Day.
Regrettably, though the famous moniker remains today, the notable infield “hill” was removed in April 1938 because it obscured a view of the backstretch for movie and televi-sion cameras.
Despite a brief hiatus from flat racing between 1889 and 1904—when the Preak-ness and Dixie were run at other tracks, and “outlaw” race meets sprung up around Maryland—Pimlico has conducted racing each year since its revival in 1904. During this interim period, steeplechase enthusiasts kept racing alive.
Racing at Pimlico even survived a 1910 anti-gambling movement that swept the
country, prohibiting the sport everywhere, except in Mary-land and Kentucky. Col. Matt Winn of Churchill Downs is alleged to have credited Pim-lico’s Billy Riggs as the savior of Eastern racing at this time. It was Riggs’ use of the less-sinful “French Pools,” or pari-mutuel machines, in 1913 as opposed to the controversial bookmak-ers and their blackboards, that preserved racing at Pimlico during this turbulent time in racing. Later Pimlico became the first racetrack in the coun-try to utilize an electric starting gate.
During its rich history, the racetrack has enjoyed being the only track in the United States to be honored by the adjourn-ment of the U.S. House of Rep-resentatives for the first and only time in history in 1877 to watch a race featuring Parole, Ten Broeck and Tom Ochiltree. The race became known as “The Great Race,” and a repro-duction of its finish is immor-talized as a Pimlico trademark, adorning the clubhouse as a signal to all entering that Pim-lico is a place where legends will endure forever.

Belmont Track Information
In 1902 a syndicate headed by August Bel-mont II and former Secretary of the Navy
William C. Whitney sought land on Long Island to build the most elaborate track in America, one modeled after the great race courses of Europe. They found what they were looking for on the border of Queens County and Nassau County. Originally known as Foster’s Meadow, the 650 acres of land included a turreted Tudor-Gothic man-sion owned by William de Forest Manice, which was to serve as the Turf and Field Club until 1956.
The grand opening of Belmont Park on May 4, 1905, prompted the first of countless traffic jams in Long Island history as more than 40,000 fans, in all manner of convey-ance, tried to arrive by the first race post time of 3 p.m. Not all of them made it in time to see August Belmont II’s Blandy, at 7-1, hold off 100-1 shot Oliver Cromwell in the $1,500 Belmont Inaugural. Later, James R. Keen’s Sysonby, who would be ranked No. 30 on The Blood-Horse magazine’s top 100 horses of the 20th century, made his 3-year-old debut against the super filly Beldame, another of Belmont’s charges. In the stretch Sysonby got unexpected competition from 20-1 Race King, and the two hit the wire in a dead heat.
The most celebrated race at Belmont Park is the Belmont Stakes, the final jewel of rac-
ing’s Triple Crown. Since 1919, when Sir Barton was the first to sweep the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont, the “Test of the Champion” has crowned but 11 winners of racing’s most prestigious, and elusive, prize.
Belmont Park holds a place in history in other areas as well. In 1910 Wilbur and Orville Wright staged an international aer-ial competition at Belmont Park that drew 150,000 spectators. In 1918 the track served as the New York City terminal for the first airmail service between New York and Washington, D.C. Belmont Park was the site of “War Relief Day” in 1940 to benefit the American Red Cross and in 1943 hosted “Back the Attack” Day, wherein fans had to buy war bonds to gain admission to the track. Total receipts that day were between $25 and $30 million.
Closed in 1963, the rebuilt Belmont Park grandstand reopened on May 20, 1968. Over the next decade it rocked to the cheers of thousands as Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977) and Affirmed (1978) joined Sir Barton (1919), Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937), Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), and Citation (1948) as Triple Crown winners. History was made in 2007 when Rags to Riches defeated Curlin to become the first filly in 102 years and one of only three to win the race, and history was de-nied in 2008 when Da’ Tara ended Big Brown’s bid to sweep the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont.
