people, schools, organizations and businesses here, details the pride, integrity and passionate

spirit of our engaging, diverse community and its charming natural ambiance.

I am very excited this issue as we begin a new program called “Getting to Know

You!” It means a lot to me to know the people I work with; to really know who they are and not just their business product or service. We include four bios this issue for you to enjoy and learn about our impressive and approachable local business owners. Each issue, I will include more bios. I can’t say I invented the idea, as the song has been around since 1951 thanks to Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s musical The King and I. A local icon, Williams Elementary’ principal, Karen Heverling, also played that

song often during morning gatherings when she first came on board at Williams, and it inspired an affectionate and warm memory for me, and most likely hundreds of students. I hope that feeling transcends to our community. Along those lines, the idea was suggested I include information about myself, for those that do not know me other than as a face in a magazine. So, here goes part one… I was one of four children born in Toledo, Ohio to James & Elizabeth (Betty) Haden, who, although they attended different universities (Toledo University and Bowling Green, respectively), met during college. My older sister Dawne, who occasionally volunteers to proof this magazine, works as a biologist for California

Department of Fish & Game. She is an amazing environmentalist. My brother Jim is the COO of NLight. He is a brilliant engineer who worked for SDLI for over a decade after getting his masters from USC, until shortly after SDLI was purchased by JDS Uniphase. My younger sister Patricia still works at JDSU in planning, although she was formerly an accountant. From SJSU, I received my BS in Business Admin. with a Marketing Concentration and a Science Minor. Perhaps it’s in my genes that I enjoy business and love science: my father was a business auditor and Federal Tax Agent, and my mother was a chemist who worked her way up to become the first female on the board of directors at the Santa Clara County Water District. I worked through college, and after graduating became the 75th employee at a startup network analysis corporation, Network General Corporation (NGC), in Menlo Park, where I stayed for four and a half years. By 1994 NGC had grown to 5,000 employees, but after getting married, I quit that job to start a graphic design business with my husband who was and is an amazing designer. NGC still exists today, though after many mergers and acquisitions is now part of Intel. Our downtown business flourished, and we began our family here in Almaden with the birth of Nina in 1996 and then Nicolas in 1998. Later, our design business, MoonCheese Studios Inc., was acquired in 1999, by Creatus, Inc. Next issue, I will include part two which is about more recent local endeavors as Wil and I raised our children in Almaden. I hope you enjoy the fabulous stories in this issue, and learning more about those around you.

The 5th annual American Cancer Society (ACS) “Relay For Life” of Almaden will be held June 25-26, 2011 at Leland High School. The Relay is a fun 24-hour event, designed to increase awareness in the

Almaden community while raising much-needed funds for the ACS’s programs and services. Relay For Life of Almaden has raised a total of $563,264 for cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services. Patti Gahagan and Karen Zimmerman, both Almaden residents and cancer survivors, participated in Relay For Life in other communities before bringing the event to the Almaden community in 2007. This year’s event chair, Meryl McVicker, also a survivor, is excited to continue the Almaden tradition of raising much needed funds for the ACS and raising awareness about the progress against cancer. “Relay For Life is a unique opportunity for our community to come together to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember those we’ve lost, and fight the disease,” said Zimmerman. Gahagan added, “Many of the participants are cancer survivors, which serves as a reminder that our community is not immune to this disease, and we can actually help our friends, families and neighbors that have been touched by cancer. Relay For Life was such a healing experience for me, and I want to share that feeling with others in our community.” “My family and I have participated in Relay For Life of Almaden since its inception,” states Dina Garcia, a member of Team Boozom Buddies. “The first Relay For Life my husband, son and daughter walked with me. Now my mother, aunts, uncles and cousins have joined us. I feel honored to be a part of this uplifting event,” said Garcia. “I have made a personal commitment both to create awareness about the progress against cancer and help raise the funds necessary to continue the fight against the disease.”

Jordon Barnes and his family participated in the 1st Relay For Life of Almaden honoring his mother as she battled ovarian cancer. His mother lost her long battle in 2008. “What Relay means to me is HOPE—walking hand-in-hand with strangers for your loved ones’ memories and continuing the fight for a cure. We are giving hope to all that a new day is coming, a day where we find the cure. Letting people know they are not alone,” states Barnes. The planning committee and event organizers of Relay For Life are Almaden residents. Almaden friends, families, coworkers and neighbors have come together to form relay teams. This year many new teams have formed, including Shephard of the Valley Church and Preschool, the Student Nursing Association at San Jose State, and the Key Clubs from Leland and Pioneer high schools. Local businesses like Almaden Curves, Best Buy and Los Gatos Travel will also participate. “We are proud to sponsor Relay For Life. It is important to us to support the community and in particular ACS as cancer has touched so many around us, including co-workers, friends, family and clients,” says Maureen Conlin, Almaden resident and owner of Los Gatos Travel, a corporate sponsor for the past three years. On relay day, team members take turns walking around the track during the 24 hours of relay, making sure that someone is on the track at all times. Why 24 hours? The community is asked to give a day out of their lives for those who may not have another. Relay For Life is a metaphor for a cancer patient’s experience: It may get really hot during the day; you may feel like quitting, but you keep on walking. It may get unbearably cold at night – it might even rain. But you press on through the darkest hours knowing the sun will come out eventually and it will be a new day.

We Celebrate. We Remember. We Fight Back.The Relay For Life starts with the Survivors’ Lap, during which cancer survivors from the community walk the first lap around the track to celebrate their victories and thank their caregivers while others cheer them on. This year the survivors lap will be held at 10:00AM on Saturday, June 25th. The luminaria Ceremony provides a time for reflection, grieving and hope. At dusk, Luminaria bags are lit, and remain lit throughout the night, creating a path of hope. The bags are decorated to remember those lost to cancer and to honor caretakers and survivors. In the Fight Back Ceremony, attendees literally and figuratively take up a flag against cancer and pledge to fight back against the disease. “It’s powerful to watch hundreds of participants make the promise to save a life from cancer in the coming year,” said McVicker. “Making the pledge is a reminder we can all make a difference and fight back against a disease that takes too much.” In addition to saving lives, the Society improves quality of life for thousands of California cancer patients, and provides support to families and caregivers.

At the California Division, ACS saves lives through its many support programs and services. In fiscal year 2009:

My name is Linda Salah, and for the past 29 years I have lived in Almaden Valley with my husband John. I have found

Almaden to have a special charm similar to that of the town where I grew up in Michigan. Raising our two daughters Jenna and Andrea in Almaden Valley, and experiencing their academic, personal, and social achievements, as well as watching them develop into successful adults has been absolutely the most exciting adventure I could have ever imagined. My eldest daughter graduates in June from Cal Poly with a degree in International Business Management, concentrating in Accounting and has a job waiting for her at Chevron as a financial analyst. My youngest, Andrea, is finishing up her second year at UC Davis studying Managerial Economics and is just loving it. Transitioning from working in law for 14 years, then raising a family, and then being lucky enough to find a career in real estate has been an exciting adventure. Real Estate has captured my heart and working with people and helping them meet their goals and needs has been rewarding in so many ways. While raising my daughters I was fortunate to work at Williams as an Art Docent and Girl Scout Leader for 6 years, along with running the Time-In Mentoring Program at Bret Harte for 8 years. volunteering at their schools. Carol and Ted love the outdoor country feel that Almaden has to offer, and often partake in hiking, riding bikes and playing tennis. Their youngest daughter Isabella loves riding horses and playing soccer, whereas Julia spends a lot of her time as one of Leland’s school newspaper editors and volunteering in organizations. Carol’s husband is a survivor of a blood cancer called AML Leukemia and has been in remission since 2006. They both have been supporters and participants in Relay for Life, Team in Training and many other cancer fundraisers. You can most likely run into Carol at an Almaden open house, Whole Foods, AVAC Zumba classes, or Quicksilver while running or hiking after her little white Bichon named Zito. the Time-In Coordinator with principals, Elaine Farace, Bonnie-Kay Calder, James Lovelace, Karen Heverling and Don McCloskey, has given me an insight into what makes our schools in Almaden successful. Hello, my name is Claudia Durand, and I’m the owner of Claudia’s Sweeties. Born and raised in Argentina, I grew up around bakers, from my parents to my great-grandfather, and I always loved it. When I quit

my office job to be able to spend more time with my baby girl, I started baking out of the house, and I had to alternate from cakes and chocolates to “taking care of my darling baby Denise.” When I was expecting my second child, my husband came home with the news that we’d be moving to the USA. We moved to Florida in 1997. Inspired by my two beautiful “sweeties”, Claudia’s Sweeties was born. I started again, building my business slowly but surely, until July 2000, another move. This time to San Jose, where I’ve been ever since, growing my business, making amazing friends and experiencing new challenges and wonderful opportunities. I remember the first year of my Easter Egg Sales. Not a lot of people knew me yet, so at the end of my Open House, I still had a lot of leftovers. My daughter Denise, then 7 years old, grabbed her brother Eric’s wagon and her babysitter and went around the neighborhood selling my chocolates. She sold them all! The neighbors thought that was the cutest. This kept me going all these years. Almaden Business Association’s (ABA) monthly networking mixer May 12th, included a special guest speaker, San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed.

The intimate and open forum event, which was open to ABA members and guests, was held at the beautiful Pavilion Event Center at the Golf Club at Boulder Ridge. “We were honored to have the Mayor speak at our ABA mixer,” said ABA Board Member, Carole Edman. “We appreciate his commitment to addressing the issues near and dear to our very active business community in Almaden Valley.” The Mayor covered a number of concerns important to the San Jose business community and the Almaden Valley area, such as; creating a more business-friendly environment for companies large and small; job growth and the role of local government; along with pending changes to the Redevelopment Agency; and the impact of potential city service cutbacks. Prizes donated by local businesses were raffled to benefit the work of Almaden Valley Counseling Service. A portion of the event proceeds were also donated. Sadly, numerous times I have had to watch the tragic consequences resulting from misinformed decisions made by families in the attempt to take care of the senior members of their family. Misinformation

gathered from sources expected to be legitimate that later proved false. People have made choices based on recommendations from neighbors, friends, and even their local barbershop – whether deciding on a lawn service, estate planning, and yes, even to end-of-life care. If the advice is poor, the consequences (emotionally and financially) for a bad lawn are significantly easier to deal with versus dealing with a poorly designed estate plan. This lack of due diligence from not obtaining expert input, not allowing the knowledge to make for a well-informed decision can have an impact on a family that lasts for years. I have had conversations with physicians, financial planners, community leaders, business people, religious leaders, social associations, individuals, all of which centered on how perilous and overwhelming it can be when attempting to navigate the maze of resources available to families. For many, every turn in this maze leads to one more dead end of frustration. In order to stop the frustration, it is often easier to just make a quick decision and hope it is the right one, the best one. On July 16th from noon to 4:00pm at the Almaden Community Center, there will be an informational forum open to the public where you and your family will have access to over 25 experts in the areas of Home, Health, Legal, Financial and Community Services. They will gather to answer your questions for current or future situations. Be prepared. I am certain you or your family will face these difficult questions at some point and wouldn’t it be nice to already have a plan?

So many choices for aesthetic treatments can be very confusing, I have written a brief summary to help clarify the differences between neuro toxins and dermal fillers. To keep things simple, I prefer to think of

neuro toxins as used cosmetically for upper face expression lines, while dermal fillers are used to fill areas of volume loss in the lower face.

NeuroToxins Botox (Allergan) and Dysport (Medicis)These products work as a muscle relaxant that temporarily stops muscle action that causes frowning, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. Both are FDA approved for frown lines. These muscle relaxants are great for wrinkles that are caused by movement. Lines that exist at rest are not affected much but may relax after consistent longterm treatment. These preventative measures keep the lines from deepening with age and usage.

Juvederm ultra, ultra plus (thicker) and XC (with numbing) by Allergan; Restylane, Perlane (thicker) By MedicisThese are Hyaluronic acid fillers (H.A’s) that can last from 3-9 months. Areas with a lot of movement will breakdown faster. (i.e.; lips.) H.A’s are frequently the filler of choice for the lips. It is a soft gel that provides a natural plumpness. The thicker products are for areas that require more structural needs such as the nasal labial folds (NLF) and the marionettes (puppet lines/jowls).

Radiesse by Merz AestheticsA Calcium Hydroxylapatite product. It is different from the H.A products. Radiesse is calcium based and is of a thicker consistency. It stimulates natural collagen. Because of this, it seems to last longer than the HA’s in areas that need more structural base. I find it to be the most effective product to use in the area of the cheek, NLF, and marionettes. Problem areas are generally caused by gravity and age. This product is used to bring back structure higher up on the face and produces a more natural correction than just filling in the folds which can add the appearance of heaviness to the lower face. This product is a good option for a full correction, “full liquid facelift.”

Artefill by Suneva medicalA Poly Methyl Methacrylate (PMMA) and Bovine collagen. PMMA (synthetic silicon microspheres) can last for more than 5 years. What makes this product great is that the tiny microspheres help produce your natural collagen. Although it is said to be a permanent filler, it is your own collagen that keeps the lasting structure and shape of the improvement. This product provides the scaffolding for your own collagen to grow upon, giving a very natural look for a longer amount of time. This is a great option for those that have used fillers but want a longer lasting outcome. Because it is mixed with a bovine Collagen, a skin allergy test is necessary.

All fillers discussed here are FDA approved for nasal labial folds. All treatments must be administered by a Medical Doctor, or an RN who works under a qualified MD.

It is with great respect that we thank you for leading the Leland High School cheer team to finals. The high standards you set for our team as well as the goals set for each individual, allowed us to shine throughout the year, winning

first place at every Regional Competition we entered. It was amazing - a great feeling for the athletes and the parents! Every team member pushed harder to acquire new skills and their perseverance glowed!

As we easily qualified for Nationals, we realized that about 40 other high schools also qualified, and only six teams would make finals. We also knew Leland had not made finals for nearly ten years, but the team knew they would make it this year! They were ready to win and became one of the six teams chosen for finals. Graystone Elementary School Spring Celebration is a fundraiser held annually on the first Friday of May. On May 6th the community was treated to a walk-a-thon, silent and live auctions, and raffle,

lead by Holly Case and Katrina Healy. Students walked for an hour during the day, building excitement for that evening when the walk continued. In the evening there was an affordable meal from Buca di Beppo with catering provided at cost. A DJ played lively music in the blacktop area, allowing the parents to shop to a tune of raising about $60,000 while the kids walked. The silent auction was a hit throughout the night and included donations received from the community, teachers, and classes. Teachers donated their time by devising fun activities, such as taking the highest bidder to the movies after school or hosting a classroom party where students pay a flat fee to attend. Each class donated a themed basket that was comprised of donations received from student families. Classes enjoyed either collecting money to purchase the items, or announcing the theme and asking families to bring items based on it. Current Chair Holly Case shares her involvement history, “I started helping with Spring Celebration four years ago when my middle son was in Kindergarten. At the time I was just chairing ‘teacher time,’ and I did that for two years. Last year when the event co-chairs stepped down, I decided to chair the entire event. Katrina Healy was kind enough to join me in the endeavor even though it

was her first year at the school, and she was new to Spring Celebration. To add to the confusion, I did some research with other area schools to find out if they were using any type of auction software. My kids had attended two other schools that had done similar events, so I knew software was out there. We decided to use ReadySetAuction, and it really helped to reduce the needed volunteer hours as far as keeping track of donations. I also decided to split the silent auction community donated items section up so that more volunteers were following up and picking up these donations. It was a large job for only two people and now six volunteers are doing this task. This year we started to recognize a trend in donation amounts being received from the students for walk-a-thon, so we added some really kid-influenced prize options at many dollar amount intervals to get the students more excited about getting sponsorship from neighbors and out-of-state relatives.” Spring Celebration has been an evolution of parents, bringing new ideas and building on a great foundation that was already in place. “I believe it has grown successfully and even with the economy downturn we have managed to raise a little more money every year. This year we lost some donations, such as our one of kind live auction items. I have also noticed that the downturn in economy has led many Moms back to work, which has greatly impacted our volunteer pool. This year it was more challenging to get volunteers.” Comments Case.

Holly is also the current (and outgoing) Home & School Club Co-President. She and her husband Jerry are raising three children. The oldest, Joshua, is a 7th grader at Bret Harte and attended Graystone for two years. The middle son, Zachary, is a 3rd grader at Graystone and the youngest, her daughter Chloe, is a 2nd grader at Graystone. “We moved to Almaden in 2003 to be closer to my oldest son’s private school and sent my middle son to Graystone for Kindergarten. We loved Graystone so much. The sense of community and the parent involved was unbelievable, so we moved our oldest too the next year. I never regret my decision of moving my kids to public school and it is one of the reasons I have gotten so involved. I believe the public schools in Almaden have just as much to offer as the private schools and by being involved and supporting the school financially, the Almaden public schools can really soar. I just wish parent involvement was growing instead of shrinking.” Having had my children attend both private and public schools, I believe we’ve arrived to a time when public schools are no longer free. Private schools are no longer the only K-12 education that costs money. We only have one opportunity to educate our children, and in public schools the parents are able to decide how their fundraised money is utilized. At Graystone we use it for technology, our library, music, art and other worthwhile programs that we would not have without the financial support of the school families. As the district cuts more and more funding, the requested donation goals will only get larger if we are to keep our existing programs. My hope as an outgoing H&SC President and Co-Chair of the Spring Celebration event is that parents will acknowledge this by giving as much as they can, both time and money. Katrina Healy, another Graystone parent ‘go-getter’ with an impressive volunteer resume, tells us about her involvement. “Along with co-chairing this event with Holly, I was also co-chair of our fall event, Pumpkin Bust, and will do it again next year! I have two sons. My oldest, Brian, is a sixth grader at Bret Harte and attended Graystone last year. My youngest, Christopher, is a third grader at Graystone. Both boys were in private school until fall 2009. We had moved to Almaden in 2008 for the schools, among other things. We love Graystone and the entire community. I lived in Evergreen for seven years before the move and felt like a stranger; another reason we moved. Within six months of living in Almaden, I felt like I had always been here, thanks to the wonderful sense of community and small neighborhood feel. I have been very pleased with Bret Harte and Graystone and echo Holly’s sentiments about what the future holds for public schooling.”

People often comment to us that we must be better parents because we are pediatricians and “know everything.” News flash... we are not. Every day, just like you, we are faced

with the dilemmas of how to get our kids to eat right, sleep enough, respect boundaries, do their homework and so on. And, certainly, our kids don’t care that we are pediatricians. Yet, we both believe that our experience in raising our own family over the last 12+ years has provided us with important insight that we are able to use when counseling parents on everything from breastfeeding to acne. And this has made us better pediatricians. But, not only have we learned a lot from our own experiences, we have learned a lot from the experiences that our patients have shared with us. So, what have we learned during our more than 25 years (combined) of parenting and practicing pediatrics? Well, here you have it:

Babies cry, that’s what they do.

Although it would be nice to feed the kids fruit and veggies daily, yes, kids really can survive on Mac-n-Cheese and chicken nuggets (our kids have).

When it comes to changing your child’s behavior, you can’t do it in a day, a week, or sometimes even a month. It takes consistency over time, sometime many months to get the pay off.

Everyone learns how to walk, talk and use the toilet... eventually. If intelligence was a determining factor in potty training, I am sure we all know people who still would not be potty trained.

Children do not need our attention all the time. It is amazing how well kids do with a little “benign neglect.”

There is no easy solution to sleep problems. While there are many books out there that promote solutions to sleep problems, they can all be summarized with one simple statement, “Your baby has to cry, these are all the things that you can do to make yourself feel better while your baby is crying.”

You can’t give as much attention to the second child as you did the first or the third as much as the second. And that’s ok. (See #6).

Siblings fight. That’s what they do. In fact, studies have shown that children learn a lot about dispute resolution through the daily bickering with siblings.

Babies are easy, toddlers are hard. Babies don’t argue about what you feed them or how you dress them. And you don’t have to chase them around the house.

When all else fails... there is bribery- ‘nuff’ said.

As you are aware, we are living in interesting times relative to health care. Benjamin Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

We all know that by eating right and exercising we are able to strengthen our bodies physically, but is there more to consider? What about strengthening our minds and emotional spirit? Have you asked, “Is there anything I can do that is simple and can be done anywhere and at any time?” The answer is “yes;” for adults and seniors there is another “type” of exercise. The exercise is called “Qi Gong”. Qi Gong can be done anywhere at any given time. Qi Gong (pronounced Chi Kung) literally translated means some-thing like “breath exercise” or “energy work” and refers to methods and practices directed toward the development and enhancement of a person’s internal bio-energy (Qi, Chi, or Ki) for purposes of self-healing, transformation, and enhancement of “special abilities.” Qi Gong allows the body to return to a state of free flowing and abundant energy. When the body is either injured or in disease (dis ease), Qi Gong can assist the body, back into the state of ease, by relaxing the mind and softening the spirit. In Qi Gong, we work with the bodies 9 gates (upper, mid level and lower joints). Like a garden hose that is kinked and does not allow water to flow evenly through it, Qi Gong works on reinvigorating the pathways allowing for greater ease of movement. As the energy flows through the body, the practitioner enjoys more vitality, better balance and a greater sense of being. Qi Gong is especially good for seniors to reestablish the sense of balance or for adults that would like to be proactive in maintaining a fit lifestyle through the years. At America’s Best Karate, we currently teach Qi Gong on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 11 a.m. Regardless of your age or physical condi-tioning, Qi Gong may be wonderful for you. During litigation, and sometimes before, opposing sides may enter into mediation. A mediator’s sole function is to negotiate a compro-mise. Mediation is non-binding... if no compromise is agreed upon,

everyone walks away and it’s like the day never happened (except for the fact you may have just paid your attorney to spend the day there... that memory may linger!) However, when a compromise is struck, a general settlement agreement is prepared and executed on the spot, which includes the material terms of the settlement, but often also contemplates that more detailed settlement docu-ments will follow. So, how binding is that initial settlement agreement, given that it may not address all the issues of a deal in detail? As a closely watched case shows, it may be very enforceable. In a case made more popular by the movie The Social Network, Facebook was sued by the Winklevoss brothers under a claim Mark Zuckerburg stole the idea of Facebook from them. After days of negotiation in mediation, a one-and-a-third page “Term Sheet and Settlement Agreement” was signed by the parties. After negotiations fell apart over some details of the final settlement documents, Facebook filed a motion seeking to enforce the initial settlement agreement, and the Winklevosses (and their company ConnectU) argued the settlement agreement should be nullified as it lacked material terms and had been procured by fraud (as Facebook was claimed to be worth four times as much as they were told during mediation). The U.S. Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit, upheld the lower court decision and found the Term Sheet and Settlement Agreement was binding. The Court explained that there are two kinds of “material” terms: (1) terms which are necessary, without which there could be no contract, and (2) terms which are important and affect the value of the bargain made. Omissions of the first kind render a contract a nullity; omissions of the second kind can be added later by the parties (acting in good faith) or can otherwise be filled in by the court based on the rest of the contract, extrinsic evidence and industry practice. So, put another way, if Facebook had included terms in the final documents that were unfair or oppressive, or that deprived the Winklevosses of the benefits they had bargained for, the court would reject those terms as a breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing (a condition imposed in every contract)... but the agreement does not get tossed out just because each and every term is not laid out in the preliminary agreement. As for the fraud claim, the Court found that the Winklevosses and ConnectU were sophisticated, they had engaged in discovery where they had received Facebook financial information, they were represented by counsel (including a half dozen lawyers at the mediation alone), and that the Winklevosses father (a former accounting professor at Wharton School of Business and an expert in valuation) had participated at mediation as well. In short, the Court was confident the Winklevosses knew what they were doing and had ample opportunity and expertise to evaluate the value of Facebook before the settlement agreement was reached. The bottom line? Regardless of the type of contract, if the material terms are agreed upon, then “a deal is a deal” even though some additional details and terms may need to be added later.
