After Convocation each year a series of regional reports are produced which are customized to regions across northern BC. These reports celebrate local grads, award winners, research activities, and other stories relevant to the area. Reports designed for communities with or close to UNBC's regional campuses also feature listings of upcoming local courses.

Imagining the FutureIt’s hard to imagine anything more vital to the sustainability of northern communities than the environment. It’s the source of considerable wealth, as well as the foundation of our cultures and identity. UNBC professor Phil Owens has been involved with research locally that is examining the complex relationships that will lead to sustainability. He has presented three workshops – in Quesnel, Williams Lake, and Likely – that is gathering information about how researchers in the biological, environmental, and social sciences can be more connected to local stakeholders. The result, suggests Dr. Owen, could be better policy and better decisions regarding climate change, water, and salmon.

Medical Grads A pair of students from Williams Lake are the first local graduates from the Northern Medical Program. Jessica Wilford and Sarah Dressler (nee Pascas) have graduated as MDs and are on to residency placements: Jessica is pursuing dermatology in Vancouver while Sarah is off to Halifax for family practice. Both 100 Mile House and Williams Lake have recently joined the Northern Medical Programs Trust, a partnership involving UNBC and northern communities to support future health care practitioners. This year, more than $150,000 is being provided to students in the Northern Medical Program and UNBC’s Nurse Practitioner degree.

Movie Star!Morgan Melnyk of 100 Mile House, who graduated from UNBC this year with a degree in International Business, is one of the students profiled in a series of new videos that depict aspects of the UNBC experience. Morgan was active in Residence and the Student Society and described his life as a student in the short video about him. The complete series is prominent on UNBC’s Facebook page and YouTube channel and the movies are central to UNBC’s student recruitment efforts. Check them out: www.youtube.com/unbcnews.
