RSU student athletes have the opportunity to live in on-campusapartments that opened this fall. Each apartment comes withcable TV, internet access, a kitchen, bathroom, private bedroom, and access to study lounges and recreational facilities.

Of course, campus improvements also include ongoing projectsto update academic buildings and improve classroomresources. Just last year, we celebrated the opening of new BairdHall which boasts classrooms equipped with Smart Boards, aperformance studio, an art gallery, and a number of other excit-ing features.

I am not only proud of everything RSU offers our student ath-letes, I am beyond proud of the contribution our student ath-letes make to RSU.

Thank you for joining us to see it happen for a fifth season.

Dr. Larry Rice

President, Rogers State University

I am pleased to welcome you to the2011 season of Hillcats soccer.

This is truly an exciting time at RogersState University, as our institution con-tinues to expand in ways that benefitall of our students, faculty and staff.

Student athletes at RSU are seizingthe opportunity to be a part of some-

thing truly unique. They are choosing to embrace the academicand athletic rigors of collegiate athletics, while contending forconference championships and competing in national tourna-ments. Last year, 31 student athletes representing each of ourathletic programs received an RSU bachelor’s degree and thatnumber continues to rise.

RSU Student athletes have the opportunity to benefit from amonumental period of university growth. During the 2011-2012academic year, RSU will undertake major renovations at its soc-cer and baseball/softball complexes. This follows investmentsmade in training and basketball facilities, and the inception of across country program.

Rogers State University: A Great Oklahoma Higher Education Success StoryRogers State University holds a historic position in the annals of Oklahoma higher education.

Since RSU was accredited as a four-year university in 2000, enrollment has increased by more than 75 percent, earningRSU the title of one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities.

RSU is a dynamic, progressive university with more than 4,600 students, widely recognized for its high-quality academicprograms, distance learning options, and high-technology learning environment. RSU is the only public four-year, residen-tial university in the Tulsa metropolitan area.

RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor's and associate degrees. Innovative new bachelor's degrees include applied technol-ogy, environmental conservation, military history, sport management, and game development.

Many students from northeast Oklahoma who plan to attend medical school complete their undergraduate studiesthrough RSU's program in medical/molecular biology. And RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for academic excellence inits nursing program.

Distinguished Academic Achievements RSU received continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Collegesand Schools without further required evaluation for 10 years - a rarity in higher education in Oklahoma and a majoraccomplishment achieved by few universities. This is truly a testament to the high academic quality of RSU.

RSU participates in The Washington Center Internship Program, a nationally recognized program placing students with pri-vate, public, and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. Students participating in the semester-long internship earncollege credit while they gain "real world" experience within their field of interest and interact with influential leaders andpolicymakers. RSU is one of only three universities in Oklahoma to participate in this prestigious program.

Most RSU faculty members hold doctoral degrees or thehighest degrees available in their fields from esteemed insti-tutions across the nation, including Princeton University,Duke University and the University of Oklahoma.

The university also boasts an Honors Program, whichprovides an atmosphere where scholars can challengethemselves academically to maximize their college expe-rience through specialized courses, student/faculty jointresearch projects, and a strong emphasis on servicelearning in the community.

In addition, the President's Leadership Class (PLC), afour-year scholarship program that fosters personal andprofessional development, was designed for RSU stu-dents who have demonstrated leadership abilities.

RSU also offers study abroad programs in Italy, SouthKorea, and Wales through the University's Studies-at-Large Program. The international study programs providestudents with opportunities to see the world, learn aboutother cultures, and enrich their educational experience.

Growth in Learning Facilities The Centennial Center, which opened in 2009, hasbecome the centerpiece of the main campus inClaremore. This two-level, 50,000-square-foot facilitycombines student development programs under oneroof, serves as a central location for students to study andsocialize and provides a focal point for the RSU campusin Claremore. The facility also offers ballrooms, confer-ence centers, and meeting rooms for the community.

A major expansion and renovation of Baird Hall on theClaremore campus was completed in 2010. The newBaird Hall has doubled in size and contains many of theleading-edge features associated with higher learningtoday, including classrooms equipped with SmartBoards, a performance studio, an art gallery, and an out-door classroom for learning outdoors on sunny days.

The University dedicated in September a new studentapartment community that doubles the number of stu-dents living on the main campus in Claremore. The $11.5million project will accommodate up to 255 students in athree-level facility, located across the street from the pres-ent university apartments. The new 87,118-square-footcomplex is located just west of Soldier Field, with a mainentrance on Colonel Horne Drive.

A Brief History of RSURSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters andsons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first buildingon the school's campus.

However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy(OMA), which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971.

Known as the “West Point of the Southwest,” OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, bothin military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during WorldWar II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country.

In 1971, OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior col-lege grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted avariety of associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station, and intercollegiateathletics.

In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seeking accredita-tion as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaurete level was granted in 2000.

Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs tomore than 4,600 students on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville, and Pryor.

Academic DevelopmentThe Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development (SAAD) program is designed to support Hillcat athletes asthey strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program provides academic support suchas advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete.

Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program, and student-athletes are given the opportunity to work withtutors trained in their particular area of academic study. The goal of the SAAD program is to help all athletes grow into responsi-ble adults as they become upperclassmen and take initiative to be personally responsible for their education and their future.

The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Dr. Brian Andrew, is there every step of the way for all athletes, toensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.

Hillcat LIFE ProgramsThe Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes’ success off the field or court. Each year, RSU introduces a vari-ety of programs to enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfalls and giving them infor-mation useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFE programs:

Etiquette training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining habits, dating manners, and courtesies. Each athlete is givena demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals.

Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are given exam-ples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse.

“It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to enlighten student-athletes about the exist-ing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will lead to more carefuldecisionmaking.

Nutrition Counseling: A nutritionist meets with student-athletes to discuss healthy meal choices and life styles. Athletes are givenan overview of different types of foods and how they affect the human body.

Hillcat LIFE Programs

u The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, and sportsmanship are addressed in the Champions of Character program.

Dangers of Gambling: Student-athletes are warned aboutthe dangers of gambling addictions and also are warnedagainst gambling on collegiate athletics, which is a violationof NAIA and NCAA rules.

RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order toprovide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.

Champions of Character

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)Champions of Character program is designed to instill anunderstanding of character values in sport, and provide prac-tical tools for student-athletes, coaches and parents to use inmodeling exemplary character traits.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Characterprogram addresses character issues more comprehensivelythan any other national program for youth. The program cur-rently reaches hundreds of thousands of students on nearly300 college and university campuses in North America andextends into their surrounding communities.

The NAIA has been informally teaching character develop-ment through athletics for decades. The core values ofrespect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership, andsportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in theChampions of Character program.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is an education-al outreach initiative that emphasizes the tenets of characterand integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but foryounger students, coaches, and parents in our communities.

Coaches, parents, administrators, and community partnersall have a role in developing students of character. The NAIAChampions of Character program brings them training, guidelines, and behavior models to create positive environ-ments that promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

OUTLOOKThe 2011 season brings a mixture of veteran returnersand talented newcomers together with one commongoal: winning a championship. The Hillcats graduated 10seniors in 2010, however Head Coach Derek Larkin islooking to his returners to step up and fill the void.

“It’s unfortunate we lost that much leadership on theteam,” Larkin said. “But I think it will also allow a lot ofyoung players to step up and take a vital leadership role onthe team. The guys that graduated from the programlast season left a great mark but they’ve beenhere for four years and it’s a new start for themen’s program. The great thing is almost ourentire starting lineup is coming back. We have 16returning players; nine of which were starters. The experience is there, we just need them to stepup as leaders.”

RETURNERSThe Hillcats return 50 percent of theiroffensive production from last year’ssquad, including senior T.J. Martin who willlead the offense. The Oronogo, Mo. nativestarted in all 18 games last season and ledthe Hillcats in scoring and assists as he pro-duced eight goals and dished out six assists.

“T.J. Martin is coming back from a very goodyear,” Larkin noted. “I think he has an opportu-nity as a senior to be a leader and score somegoals.”

Henrique Sousa returns for his senior campaignwith a new role. As one of the most versatileplayers on the squad, he will transition fromdefense into a more offensive role.

“We’re looking at moving Henrique Sousa fromthe back to the front,” Larkin said. “He playedPDL (Premier Development League) all sum-mer in St. Louis as an attacking player, comingback very fit and ready to go. I think he couldbe a huge asset to us on the attack.”

Junior Justin Friesen started in all 18 games as a sopho-more, scoring one goal and adding one assist. He alsostarted in every contest as a freshman; with his experi-ence Coach Larkin will be looking to him to commandthe center midfield.

Men’s Soccer Outlook“Justin Friesen brings experience and leadership to thefield,” Larkin said. “He is our captain who will anchor themidfield and run the show in there.”

RSU returns several talented players on defense, includ-ing all four starters. Ryan Coffman and Bryan Jones willanchor the defense. Jones started in 17 games and wasan all-conference performer in 2010 while adding twogoals and two assists. Mychal Adamson returns to theback line after starting 16 games as a sophomore andMarco Bukva rounds out the starting four.

“We have all four of our starting defensive players com-ing back and I feel confident about our back line,”Larkin said. “Ryan Coffman and Bryan Jones will beour two centerbacks along with Marko Buvka and

Mychal Adamson who will play on the flanks. Allfour returners have played together for a cou-ple of years now and work really welltogether. “

NEWCOMERSSeveral talented freshmen will battlefor playing time up front. Nathan

Garcia and Devon Williamswill look to make animmediate impact onoffense. Garcia comes toRSU from Waxahachie,Texas where he scored eight

goals and dished out 13assists during his senior year.

Williams is from Lewisville, Texas where henetted three goals and tallied two assists lastyear.

“Freshmen Nathan Garcia and Devon Williamscould be an added bonus for us if they can step

up and perform this year,” Larkin said.

NCAA Division I transfer, Gary Arauz played in 22 match-es at Oral Roberts over two seasons. Coach Larkin hopesto see Arauz use his talent and experience to make animmediate impact on the pitch.

“Oral Roberts transfer, Gary Arauz will be a real addedtalent to our lineup,” Larkin said. “Between Arauz andFriesen along with a couple of other talented players weshould have a great midfield.”

The biggest question mark for the Hillcats comesbetween the posts where Coach Larkin will have to fillthe shoes of four-year starting goalkeeper, Sean Surridge.Surridge served as the primary goalkeeper for the pro-gram since the inaugural season and was named SACGoalkeeper of the Year as a senior in 2010.

“There’s no doubt that Sean was great from a talentstand point but even more from a confidence stand-point,” Larkin said. “Having someone in goal for fouryears that the team could depend on and count on wasa huge advantage. He left some big shoes to fill. Ourkeepers are going to have to find a way to fill those shoesand gain the confidence of the players around them. ButI do believe in the three goalkeepers we have. I thinkbetween the three of them it’s going to be a real battleto earn the starting position.”

Jeremy Swift redshirted last season at RSU and is lookingto earn the starting goalkeeper position. NewcomersMitchell Penton and Nathan Inger are also eyeing thestarting spot.

SCHEDULEThe Hillcats have added fire power to their non-confer-ence schedule in order to be better prepared for the rig-ors of Sooner Athletic Conference play. RSU will open the18-game slate at home against regional rival OklahomaWesleyan on Aug. 30.

The Cats will travel to Coach Larkin’s alma mater,Missouri Valley College, on September 1. The Vikingsenter the 2011 season ranked No. 14 in the NAIA Men’sSoccer Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll and ranked No. 1in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

“There’s no doubt this is the toughest schedule we’vehad,” Larkin stated. “Even though we aren’t playing anyDivision I teams we will play several Top 20 NAIA andNCAA Division II teams. We are extremely confident fromthe opening game against Oklahoma Wesleyan all theway to Lindenwood University, who won the NationalChampionship in 2004, that all the non-conferencegames we’re playing will really prepare us for conferenceplay. The conference schedule is always grueling and wewant to be prepared”

The Hillcats were tabbed to finish fourth in the 2011 SACPreseason Coaches’ Poll. Oklahoma Baptist and USAOboth reached the NAIA National Tournament last seasonand tied for the top spot in the poll. OBU enters the sea-son ranked No. 8 in the NAIA Preseason Poll and USAOis ranked 15th. Oklahoma City University was rankedthird in the SAC poll and received votes in the NAIA poll.

Men’s Soccer OutlookEXPECTATIONSWith a good mix of returners and newcomers the Hillcatsare eager to make their mark on the program.

“With all those returning players, the influx of some keytransfers and some great freshman talent, I think the skyis the limit,” Larkin said. “I think they can go as far as theywant to and it depends on how hard they want to workand hopefully things fall into place. We were very closelast year and with all these guys coming back I think wehave great opportunity to do well this season.”

NEWCOMERSCoach Larkin added to the Hillcats arsenal on the frontline with a pair of newcomers. Division I transfer

Veronica Subu and freshman JordanBeasley look to make and imme-diate impact on the Hillcatoffense.

“New Mexico State transferVeronica Subu and freshmanJordan Beasley are both verytalented and will bring speed

to the lineup,” Larkin said. Withthe mix of newcomers and return-ers we have on offense, I am con-fident in the amount of talent andoverall speed we will have on thefront line. “

The Hillcats added ClaremoreHigh School product, Tara Garrettto the midfield. She was namedto the Oklahoma All-State squadas a senior in 2009. In highschool, she helped lead theClaremore Zebras to a StateQuarterfinal finish in both her jun-ior and senior seasons.

“Tara Garrett is a Claremore girl, I thinkshe’s going to help us a lot in the midfield,”Larkin said. “We may be shuffling playersaround, we may use Shereen Clarke andVeronica Subu in the middle along with acouple of other younger players. I think we’llhave a great combination that will allow usto defend and attack.”

For the first time in the program’s short history, the Hillcats have added depth between theposts. Danielle Burgess is a freshman fromCatoosa High School where she led the Indiansto a 13-3 State runner-up finish during her sen-ior campaign. She tallied 98 saves and sixshutouts earning MVP honors and Athlete of theYear recognition. Jordan Harris is a transfer fromthe University of Missouri-Kansas City where she

redshirted as a freshman. In her senior season of highschool at Claremore, Harris was named to the all-state,all-district and all-metro teams. She led Class 5A in savesas a senior and was named team MVP.

OUTLOOKThe Rogers State women’s soccer team enjoyed itsfourth-straight winning season in 2010. The Hillcats lookto continue their success in 2011 as they return a largegroup of veterans while adding an impressive nucleus ofnewcomers.

“We’re really excited about our nice mixture of a return-ing core of players,” Head Coach Derek Larkin said. “Wehave some great players coming back with a lot ofleadership along with a very talented fresh-man class. I think the combination of thetwo along with a couple key transferswill make for a very nice blend of tal-ented players.”

RETURNERSTwelve players, including seven starters, return from the 2010 squad. RSU returns atrio of goal-scorers to the lineup. Leadingthe way is Shereen Clarke, who paced theCats with nine goals last season. Senior ChelseaMyers and junior Lauren Hager each netted threegoals and dished out one assist during the 2010campaign.

“Last year we had a lot of team speed withChelsea Myers, Lauren Hager and ShereenClarke up top,” Larkin said. “They are three ofour most versatile players and we are expectingbig things from them this season.”

Sophomore goalkeeper Chelsea McMullinreturns after an exceptional rookie year. TheHillcats return every starter on the back line, including Abby Rickner, Jessica Turner, CierraLohaus and Devon Bullard.

“It’s always great to have your starting goalkeeperback,” Larkin said. “Chelsea McMullin had a fantas-tic season as a freshman and with a year of experi-ence under her belt we are expecting even biggerthings from her this season. In front of her we haveplayers along the backline like Abby Rickner who hasa lot of experience and talent. Jessica Turner is com-ing back along with Lauren LeForce, Cierra Lohausand Devon Bullard. So basically our entire backlineis back along with a returning goalkeeper.”

EXPECTATIONSWith several returners and a talented group of newcom-ers the Hillcats are ready prove they belong among thebest in the league.

“We have a plethora of talent at the goalkeeper position,”Larkin said. “For the first time in a long time we’re deepat that position. Freshman Danielle Burgess fromCatoosa and Division I transfer Jordan Harris are bothoutstanding goalkeepers.”
